Mother Nature not kind to fair By Mike Williscraft NewsNow They came. They saw. They got wet. That was pretty much the order of the weekend for West Niagara Fair attendees. “We did the best we could,” said West Niagara Agricultural Society president Albert Witteveen. “People were very understanding. We got a lot of positive comments and we heard a lot of ‘We’re looking forward to coming back next year when everything is done’.” Witteveen was referring to the overall fairgrounds, which has been under construction most of this year at the new Mud Street location, just west of Mountain Road. “The construction crew has done a great job, as has our committee, just
to get where we are. We just got out occupancy permit last week, so we covered a lot of ground,” said Witteveen. As much as people wanted to see the farm animals and exhibits, take in a demo derby or live performance, virtually all just wanted to see how the new grounds would be set up. “The only real problem we had was with the agriculture education show. It kind of got washed out due wet ground,” said Witteveen. “The carnival guys really like the stonedust yard. They told us when they were in Renfrew they had to get tractors to pull the rides out because the ground turned to mud. Our grounds drained well.” The four-day event started promisingly with more than 2,000 fans at-
tending Thursday night’s demolition derby. Friday’s main focus was a cattle and mini-horse show. “Saturday sucked. That said we did have good crowds taking in some of the shows like Mad Science and Guitar Loft’s performance stage,” said Witteveen. The all-day rain also forced the cancellation of such attractions as the helicopter rides and Saturday night’s fireworks, which got pushed into Sunday. “Our spirits were really down after Saturday. We put in a lot of work to have that happen. It was unfortunate. But we bounced back Sunday with a very strong day. Despite threatening skies, the heavy See FAIR, Page 2

Auxiliary comes through for WLMH...again yet The volunteers behind West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary have done it again – this time generating $200,000 for two ultrasound units. WLMA president Marlene Morais said the funds were raised via events and the auxiliary’s ongoing efforts at the hospital’s coffee shop. “It is also important to mention the Rankin Run and its director Mary Ann Edwards. They have provided $50,000 a year to us for seven years,” said Morais. WLMH medical director, Dr. Gary Benson, thanked the group for its efforts. “The auxiliary continues to amaze. They are an outstanding
group of people,” said Dr. Benson. Former WLMH president John Riddell called the facility :the little hospital that could and noted auxiliary volunteers put in more than 28,000 hours per year.

Mont Blanc no match for tanker By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The small, woodenhulled, pulpwood carrier Mont Blanc was no match for the tanker Eastern Shell when the pair collided in the St. Lawrence fifty years ago this month. The accident was blamed on dense fog as the pair of Canadian ships came together east of Trois Rivieres, Quebec. The crew of the Eastern Shell launched their lifeboat and were able to rescue the sailors who had been on the Mont Blanc before the latter ship slipped to the bottom of the river. Officially, Mont Blanc was built at Ile-auxCoudres in 1944 but the vessel was actually constructed using the bottom of the A. Tremblay which dated from 1916. There was also some speculation that this vessel was also

Twenty Valley school plans to host Fun Fair Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton will officially welcome students to the new Twenty Val-
ley Public School in Vineland this morning, Thursday. There has been a whole series of events unfolding at the brand new school which opened to students for the first time last week. Tuesday night, Lincoln Fire Department was running practice drills to the school from the Vineland fire station to familiarize themselves with the grounds. Next week, the school will host a Fun Fair on Friday, Sept. 25 from 4-7 pm. The event is being put on by a group of parent volunteers to raise funds for the students. New seniors club name long time coming: facility director Dear Editor, It is now official. After some two years of confusion over our 50 year old name being misnomered in print and word, The Grimsby Seniors Citizens Club has officially modernized its name to read The Grimsby Seniors Club. This definitive action stems from the diligent persistence of one nonmember town official, thank you. You will find our new 2.0 name already emblazoned on the shiny blue sign at the entrance of 18 Livingston Avenue. It’s a thing of beauty. To set the chronology record straight for
those not in the know, The Grimsby Seniors Citizens Club was 50 years old this year (Apr. 27/65). The building, our home, is a mere 43 years old (Sept. 11/72); much younger than repeatedly advertised. The new entrance sign denotes fresh life for the Grimsby Senior Centre with the summer introduction of the complex’s new name, Livingston Activity Centre (LAC). This isn’t your grandma’s old folk’s home, as you’ve been led to believe all these years. This place is a bustling hub of social activity with nearly 600 members enjoying their benefits

Solving Ontario’s money problems When one wonders why the provincial Liberals are cruising along at massive deficits these days, one really doesn’t have to look further than civil servants. The Liberals have done some bone-headed things, to be sure, but teachers are front and centre these days with ongoing contract negotiations for several school boards rolling out over the last year. While private sector working folk face tough work prospects on a day-to-day basis, teachers’ unions think it is ok to push for perks like wanting to accumulate sick days so they could be tacked onto the end of careers to create earlier paid - retirement dates etc, etc. Premier Wynne should bite the bullet and go old school Mike Harris, issue a five per cent (or whatever the province needs) wage rollback and be done with it.
Town can step up on stairs issue With most items I present in this space, every intention is given to provide information uniformly from both sides of an issue, an overall landscape of a topic or simply details of something which occurred. Simply, balance. It’s true. Once in a while when something strikes a cord I lose it a bit and rail on choosing one side of a subject or the other. Even then some defence of the “other side” is typically given. Quite often I note that my thoughts are purely that, mine. You can take them or leave them, look into these topics, and form your own opinions. If you choose, come back to me with questions and I will do my best to answer them, or send a letter. The best way to tell if I am doing a good job? When I cover something and I get calls and emails from both sides of an issue thanking me for presenting their views in an appropriate light. Case in point, my overview of the issue of the staircase adjacent to the Grimsby Benevolent Fund Building - a touchy subject. With reviewing all that, the bottom line for me is, GBF should look to do what Gabe DeSantis did in Beamsville with his property at Ontario and John Streets when he “donated” a stretch of land to the town. In that instance, it allowed him to change the property in question’s address and he is resubmitting a proposal for a new Tim’s store there. With the staircase, if GBF “donated” an appropriate setback from the east side of its property to include the bottom of the staircase, the Town of Grimsby could take it over, all would be redone to municipal code (residents have said they would raise money to cover construc-
MIKE WILLISCRAFT tion costs) and the ongoing issue of insurance would fall under the Town’s liability umbrella. Done. Move on. Now, I simplify, but you get the idea. It has been noted here may times, I’m not always right. Lord knows, I’ve made a mistake or two in my life. But when you do this writing thing for a long time, the body of work, if done properly tips the scale in favour of a job well done purely by public opinion. In the end, it is the opinion of you, good reader, not mine, which determines if any council story, feature, photo spread or opinion column is worthy reading. One thing I can guarantee, if people were not liking what they were seeing in NewsNow pages, we would have been done and gone three years ago. Of late, we have been getting a ton of positive comments. It’s almost unnerving. Whether it has been comments about the staircase coverage, the information about Grimsby’s biodigester project, the bizarre dealing of West Lincoln council or the ramblings in this space, a considerable amount of positivity has been coming at our staff from all corners of our coverage area. That is nice.
I’m not really good at accepting compliments. I don’t expect them. I certainly don’t work for them. But they are appreciated. All I every really say is, “We try.” And that is true of anything. We are a 4.5 staff independent paper competing against a corporate giant armed to the teeth and, you know what, we love every minute of if. Well, not every minute, but you know what I mean. This is really hard to explain, but if you came down to our office and just hung out on our comfy couch in the waiting area you would soon see what I mean with the following. It can remind me of the scene from Peanuts, when Lucy has her advice booth set up with the big nickel cost written on the front and her posse comes by and ask her advice. That can be the scene at out office. People come in and ask marketing advice. They ask about how to deal with council (any council) on a particular issue. They talk about state of the town. How do I run a fundraiser? You name it really. And I think people keep coming because I will always try to help. If I don’t know something, I will put them in touch with someone who can. That is just part of our job. If you’re going to be part of the community it means helping the community, standing up for what is right for the community and, in the end, if you are doing something right, the community responds. Thanks for responding. We have a lot of really neat things on the go and lots more we want to accomplish. All our staff LOVE what they do. We try.

Any business must deal with customer complaints and concerns. It is their responsibility to adhere to policies and procedures and follow up with their customers. Project Location: The proposed project is located within Haldimand County and Niagara Region (including the Townships of Wainfleet and West Lincoln and the Town of Lincoln). The electrical interconnection components are located within the Town of Lincoln and the Township of West Lincoln, in Niagara Region, and in Haldimand County in southern Ontario.
Community Liaison Committee (CLC) FWRN (formerly Niagara Region Wind Corporation) is inviting interested members of the public, municipalities, Aboriginal communities, stakeholders and neighbours to attend the first Community Liaison Committee (CLC) for the facility. The purpose of the CLC is to facilitate two-way communication between NRWC and members of the public with respect to issues relating to the construction, installation, use, operation, maintenance and retirement of the facility. Through this CLC process, NRWC will provide regular updates and discuss issues/concerns related to the facility.
The first meeting will be held: Date: September 21st, 2015 • Time: 5:30pm – 8:30pm • Place: Wellandport Community Centre (5042 Canborough Rd, Wellandport, ON L0R 2J0) At minimum, the CLC will meet 4 times over a 2 year period. The “Interconnector Study Area” was established to scope the location of the proposed 115kV transmission line, transformer substations and tap-in location.
