By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A missed stop sign resulted in the death of a 74-year-old Niagaraon-the-Lake man Monday night. Niagara Regional Police’s collision reconstruction team was called in to determine exactly what happened when a 2001 Pontiac Montana van collided with a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta at about 5:30 p.m. at Ontario Street and Niagara bound QEW ramp.
Investigators have determined the van was travelling east along the QEW access road on the south side of the QEW. It was occupied by a 74-yearold male driver and his 70-year-old passenger, both from Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Pontiac continued east and approached the intersection at Ontario Street. FATAL From Page 1 the through lane on Ontario Street. At the same time, a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a lone 35-year-old woman from Grimsby was travelling south on Ontario Street. The Volkswagen struck the Pontiac on the driver’s door, causing the Pontiac to roll onto its passenger side in the middle of the intersection and come to final rest. The two occupants in the van were trapped following the collision and required extrication by Grimsby Fire Department. All involved parties were transported to the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. An air ambulance was dispatched to transport the van’s driver to a trauma centre, but despite the efforts by medical personnel, the man succumbed to his injuries. The passenger in the van and the driver of the Volkswagen received minor injuries
and were treated in hospital and released. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time. This was the second serious accident on Ontario Street in Grimsby in recents weeks and many other similar accidents have occurred at these QEW ramps over the years. NRP St. Sgt. Michael Woods, 8 District Commander, said drivers need to pay particular attention in the QEW ramp areas. “We would encourage all drivers to come to a complete stop at all controlled intersections, and to take an extra moment to ensure that the way is clear before proceeding. NRP officers will continue intersection-related enforcement efforts as a reminder to motorists to drive safely and cautiously,” said Woods. “The recent collision at the intersection of Ontario Street and the QEW eastbound ramp is a tragic occurrence for the family of the deceased, as well as the other involved
driver and first responders, and serves as a reminder of the importance of cautious, defensive driving on a daily basis”. He noted that, because of the unique structure of the roads in this area, several things need to be drivers’ minds. “The QEW eastbound and westbound ramp crossings at Maple Avenue, Ontario and Christie streets are all busy intersections that require a high degree of driver attention,” Woods said. “Not only do drivers have to contend with approaching cross traffic, but some of the intersections have reduced sightlines due to bridge abutments and railings, or other visual distractions.” The intersection was closed for several hours Monday night as the NRP reconstruction unit conducted its investigation into the accident. Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact detectives at (905) 688-4111, extension 5500.

Five contest race for vacated Lincoln mayor’s chair Lincoln residents can look forward to the most hotly contested mayoral race in decades with five solid candidates in the race for the mayor’s chair. Two candidates, Bill Hodgson and Peter Randall will contest the regional councillor’s position. ROB CONDOTTA Rob Condotta has been a resident of Lincoln for 26 years. He and his wife, Barbara Honsberger Condotta, have daughters, Britney and Chloe. They are grandparents to Chloe’s and her husband, Justin’s newborn, Beau Robert. With more than three decades of municipal infrastructure experience and eight years as Lincoln councillor, Rob says he has gained a wealth of experience. Grimsby’s Terry Fox Run brings in $25,000 Sunday’s weather was perfect to walk or run or cycle around Grimsby and hundreds of people did just that. As they enjoyed the morning, Grimsby residents could also take pride in having raised another $25,000 for cancer research in memory of a Canadian icon. Although 34 years
have passed since Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope to raise money to fund cancer research, his memory is alive and well in Grimsby. Mayor Bob Bentley addressed the participants and thanked them for coming out to support the run. About 250 people participated.

Kids can be firefighter for a day Fire Department Open House this Sunday, Sept. 21 Your chances of being in a house fire are higher than your chances of winning the lottery. So knowing what to do in the event of a fire may be the difference between living or dying. This Sunday, Sept. 21, the Grimsby Fire Department is holding its annual open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Theme is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives. Test Yours Every Month”. Members of the fire service

QE thruways need some kind of attention Traffic is always a big concern and that concern is magnified when a tragedy strikes. Both Mountain Road in Grimsby and Beamsville have seen their share of truck accident-related tragedy over the years, just as the QEW thruway intersections at Christie, Ontario and Maple have seen more than their share of T-bone accidents. Ontario Street Grimsby has seen two serious accidents in recent weeks with another fatal taking the life of a Niagara-on-the-Lake man on Monday evening. While the truck taffic through town centres has its own distinct issues – lots of pedestrian traffic, parked cars, tight quarters – the QE thruways have their own issues, too. At some of those intersections, sightlines are not great. Not horrible, and each is very different, but in some cases they could be contributing factors. In speaking with one of Niagara’s finest a couple of weeks ago regarding the mishap at Ontario and the Toronto-bound thruway, he said the bottom line is drivers need to pay attention to the rules of the road, noting there are oversized stop signs in place as it is. Agreed. There is no accounting for driver error. You can have all the signs you want, but when someone is not paying attention or simply makes a mistake, sadly, tragedy can result. But my point is different mitigating measures come to mind when I think of oth-
MIKE WILLISCRAFT er intersections with unique features come to mind. I always hated them, but those roads with serrations notched into them in stretches approaching intersections would be welcome. So, too, would be those flashing amber lights which I have seen fixed atop stop signs...more typically one sees those in rural areas, but whatever works, right? While locals have been involved in many of the mishaps on these thruways over the years, the plethora of tourists passing through the area, who are not familiar with our roads and three consecutive stop signs, I would think, heighten the possibility of driver error. Case in point – and with a transport driver I certainly expect more as these folks are supposed to be professionals and one would think they commonly haul their rigs on unfamiliar road all the time – I was within 10 feet of getting smunched last Thursday at the exact same intersection as Monday night’s accident. I was returning from Beamsville after completing my newspaper deliveries about 3 p.m. I turned left on
Ontario and was proceeding south to the parking lot behind Teddy’s as per usual. I always drive on high alert through there as I have covered too many accidents and seen countless drivers who slow slightly thinking they can still stop if they see a vehicle coming or skate right through if the coast is clear. If those guys do stop it is 12-15 feet into the middle of street. Anyways, I see the nose of a transport coming from my right on the thruway and I knew immediately that size rig could never stop as he was doing about 70 right at the corner. I slammed on the brakes immediately and came to a full stop about six feet from the truck leaning on the horn the whole time. The truck was old and scruffy, no visible markings but I could clearly see an older-looking driver, grey beard wearing an orange turban looking straight ahead, not acknowledging my presence in the slightest as he sped right on through. After he passed, I noticed someone running out of Rikochez Pub right at the tracks to see what the commotion was. Luckily it was nothing but I was a fraction of a second away from being a statistic. I get that the intersections fit regulations, but something needs to be done to reduce the risk. As I say, driver error cannot be overcome, but figuratively beating someone over the head with obvious stop signs is much better than picking them up off the road.

Local farmers’ markets prepare for season wrap up There really is nothing like the taste of a peach rippened in the sun. Those who shop at local farmers’ markets are well aware of that. Everyone else is really missing out. “We are going to be working on developing new ideas to remind people to make a stop to do their weekly shopping at the market,” said J.D. Pachereva, executive director of the Twenty Valley Tourism Association. The Jordan Farmers’ Market operates on Wednesdays from noon to 5:30 p.m. and will wrap up fOct. 8 but will be at the Ball’s Falls Thankgiving Festival Oct. 10-13.
The Grimsby’s Farmers’ Market runs Thursday afternoons downtown. “This was our fourth summer downtown and everything went really well. People just seem to find it a very nice meeting place. It is very social,” said Joanne Johnston, DIA and community representative on Farmers Market Steering Committee. “This year we had the Grimsby Garden Club come out and do seed planting. The zombie day was popular again. The booth we have set up right in front of Farewell House (Royal LePage) for community groups to promote themselves has proven very popular as well.”
The Beamsville Farmers Market last day is this Saturday Sept 20. It operates at Great Lakes Christian High School on King Street. “We had a successful 2014 season with 19 vendors providing seasonal best produce, baked goods, spices, oils, scented waxes, juices, jams and jellies, honey, bakeware, home-made soaps, flowers and nursery plants,” said Jim Burnison, market manager. “This weekend the high school is also hosting the Dad to Dad Sale as well.Joe from Tina’s Collection will back with his fine bed and bath linens. Come grab those end of season stock ups. Thank all our loyal customers.”
