Residents want GBF, Town to hear staircase concerns By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A crowd of 65-70 people turned out on a sunny afternoon to voice their displeasure. The source of that displeasure has been the closing of a staircase that connects their neighbourhood to the parking lot near the door of the Grimsby Benevolent Fund’s. Addressing the crowd, resident Ken Austin said represen-
tatives have sought the support of Grimsby town council, and got it. “Town councillors wanted to open a dialogue with the GBF and keep it open, right Dave?” Austin asked Coun. Dave Kadwell who was in attendance. “Absolutely,” said Kadwell. Austin said everyone recognizes that there are a series of issues involved, but stressed everyone among his group wants
to work towards a solution and are more than willing to do their part. “We have the fellow who originally built the stairs decades ago willing to help. We have two other contractors in the neighbourhood willing to help,” said Austin. “If we need to fundraise, we are committed to that, too.” For the GBF’s board of directors, though, the matter is not
that cut and dry. In a Letter to the Editor last week, GBF board president Jamie Stevens said, “between the reconstruction of the stairs, the ongoing maintenance and the potential liabilities involved, we felt that the financial commitment simply went too far beyond our mission: “To help individuals and families maintain self sufficiency by providing assistance See STAIRS, Page 2
Huge team effort needed to pull off Lions food drive When one event generates 3-4 months of donations for a food bank, needless to say, it is crucial for those it serves in the community. Such is the case with the Beamsville Lions Club’s 26th annual fall food drive
which will be held Saturday, Sept. 19 throughout Lincoln. “We really appreciate the support of the Jordan Lions on this project,” said Beamsville Lions event chair Peter Willetts. “The Jordan Lions
support allows us to expand the reach of the food drive to the whole municipality, and that is important.” It is important because the 175 or so volunteers who will be collecting food from Lincoln front steps
and porches on Sept. 19 will be hoping to gather enough food to restock empty shelves and hold the West Niagara Community Care over until Christmas. “It is amazing what gets done in such a short time,” said
CCWN executive director Carole Fuhrer. “Every single donation has to be touched and verified. We have to make sure everything we take in is not beyond its expiration date.” “We try to make

Sheep show a woolly time! It will be a woolly time in the Richardson Grain building at the new fairgrounds when the first sheep show on the site gets underway at noon on Sunday, Sept. 13. Russ Lowden, organizer of the sheep show said all entrants are welcome in the five categories available: Dorset, Suffolk, Southdowns, any other long-wool breed, or any other short-wool breeds. Entrants should be on the grounds by 10 a.m. “For me this is like a family tradition. My Grandfather was involved with the fair. Now it is my dad, me, my sons and daughter on the fair board, three generations,” said Lowden. “I come from a farming background which of course had a flock of sheep which we also took to all the different fall fairs such as the CNE and Royal Winter Fair.” The sheep show is sponsored by Jim McMillian & Family and Jackie Comfort, who supply trophies and cash prizes.

By Steve Capell As we welcome back some of the crowd favorite horse shows to the new grounds this year, we will continue to offer the favorites from the past couple of years. Back this year is the English horse show on Saturday, Sept. 12. This show had been
a crowd favorite in Beamsville for a number of years and will run very similar to how it did in the past. The best of the best will be out to try out the new ring and shoot for the red ribbon. Friday night we will once again be having the open miniature horse show and based

Horse show exhibitors should be reminded that they will be entering the grounds off of Mud Street (paved entrance) and proceed down to the south end of the property where the one horse show ring is already completed. A nudge from her sister-in-law started Sandy Pennycuick on a whirlwind of baking competitions, with great success. “I won something when I first entered and I went hog wild after that,” recalled Sandy. “If they had a category, I entered. I just love the competition.” While her baking, crafts and preserves have earned her top honours for years, she has taken that involvement a step further. “I have gotten involved in the planning of the competitions, helping with displays, escorting the judges, taking photo of everything,” said Sandy. For Jackie Hayes, she has been mixing up her entries for 40 years. “Breads are my specialty,” said Jackie, noting that she even won the All-Ontario of bread making. An entry of hers went to a convention of fair organizers – which brought entries from only the winners of each fair’s competitions – and she took top honours. “It is all trial and error for me. The West Niagara Agriculture Society has made a one-time arrangement with World’s Finest Midway’s and 2015 fairgoers will be the beneficiary. “We’re very happy to be able to offer $15 all-day ride bracelets,” said WNAS president Albert Witteveen. “We wanted to do something special for the new place as a bit of a thank-you to those who have supported us so well over the years.” Doors open at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 12, while Sunday, Sept. 13th’s action gets going at 11 a.m. “There are a lot of little things we have tried to do. It has been crazy to get ready, but it will be a lot of fun,” said Witteveen.
The sun will eventually set on the first West Niagara Fair at the new fairgrounds, but not until cars have been smashed, candy floss has been gobbled, rides have been ridden and horses have cantered.

Staircase in place for decades, what changed? Dear Editor, What a wonderful gift the stairway at the end of Melrose has been for the last 35 Years to the Kingsway Community. John Pachereva who owned IGA saw the value to his business and kept the Good Will to our Community to restore the old easement and built the stairway for us to use. Then about four years ago the stairway was repaired by Price Choppers just prior to selling the property to GBF Generosity begets Goodwill intentions by supporting those who supports
Letter those who donate, volunteer and shop at GBF. I feel that when one gets too big they tend to forget the generosity of those who supported them through the years. It is unfortunately that GBF has forgotten that the need to keep Good Will towards their neighbours is not of any value to them. By refusing to even sit down and talk with us to come up with a solution to keep the stairway open is very disappointing and not what I expected from GBF! I as a resident on
Rosslyn Ave, I miss the stairs along with all the other community residents who used the stairway and those who do not belong to our community but visit in the area such as friends, relatives, walkers, and runners. I feel the Staircase is indeed valuable and worthy to fight for. GBF bought the property knowing full well that the stairway was there and that it has been and easement for the community. To close it staircase is not acceptable. The GBF board should accept their responsibility to the community and keep

Bill Fisher of Grimsby, Ontario passed away suddenly after a long and happy life. Bill was the husband of Grace (nee McIntyre) for 59 years and father of Paul (Jane) Fisher of Calgary, Peter (Carol) Fisher of Greely and Kathy Joy (Andrew Williams) of Calgary. He was heavily involved in the community as Chairman of the Recreation and Parks Department, a member of the Lion Club, coach of minor hockey (The Rockets) and sponsor of numerous sporting teams throughout the years. During his entire life, Bill was an active member of Trinity United Church. His sense of humour, sunny disposition, historical recollection of Grimsby and love for the town, will be missed by many. Neighbours say they are ready to help GBF: writer Dear Editor: (A reminder - This stairway is part of a route that has connected our neighbourhood with downtown Grimsby for nearly 60 years. It was closed without warning by the GBF in March.) Mr. Stevens, you say you are disappointed and have reached a difficult decision. You closed the stairway at the southeast corner of the GBF property. Well, if you examined fact and figure before reaching this difficult decision, then I am confused. Why? Well, you gave us the following reasons for closing it. You say the staircase poses a high risk, it has deteriorated seriously, and it costs too much to maintain. But you do not have an expert opinion of the risk posed by the staircase and you have no expert opinion of the physical condition of the stairs, even though you have declared they are deteriorated beyond repair. You are unable to provide any information about ongoing maintenance.

I won’t argue with most of your letter because most of it has nothing to do with the stairway. You confuse the operation of GBF as a charity with GBF as a neighbour and a business entity. Because you are a charity does not mean that you are excused from the moral and ethical responsibilities of being a good business and a good neighbour. Last week’s letter from the GBF was the first response in all these months to our concerns. And it was a letter to the editor, not to us. By now you have learned of the strength of our support at our gathering on Sunday for a photo in front of the fence at the top of the stairs. We are not going away. Grimsby loses a lion Bill Fisher was a lion of the community. Bill died Saturday while attending a wedding at Balls Falls. He was 88. He was the heart of downtown for decades and an integral part of the community has a whole with extensive involvement in Grimsby’s Recreation and Parks Department and the Grimsby Lions Club. He was always on the go, something happening, informed and friendly, indeed, a fixture on Main Street. He was a walking encyclopedia of all things Grimsby with his knowledge gleaned from decades of meetings and discussions with others. That type of knowledge and understanding will be sorely missed. Communication key to understanding This business with the Grimsby Benevolent Fund, the staircase that leads up into the Melrose/Rosslyn Avenue subdivision and the residents there needs some immediate attention before some irreparable harm comes of it. Before I get into some why and wherefores, the main point is, whoever has been advising the GBF on how to deal with the residents has been dead wrong. That is not to blame the GBF, and when I say GBF I mean the board of directors as that’s who would be appropriately dealing with the matter. We are not talking about volunteers in the foodbank or staff. Both may have opinions and may or may not speak to residents whom they know, pass by the store on a regular basis or even volunteer there. This is an important board matter which they have been dealing with on an ongoing basis and they are the ones ultimately responsible for the whole operation. They are good people, volunteer their time and are worthy of respect. Now, the matter at hand. In March, the GBF closed a staircase which connected the neighbourhood right to the parking lot 60 feet from the GBF’s door. It spans from the edge of the roadway, onto GBF’s private property and ends on their property. The information contained herein come from upwards of 20 conversations with various people involved in the matter in one form or another. Some of these chats took place Sunday when 65-70 people turned out for a show of solidarity among neighbourhood folk. Virtually all wanted to convey their two cents but, honestly, I could not write

I summarize their comments this way: • Residents believe they have not been listened to by either the Town or GBF’s board of directors; • They say their numerous letters of inquiry and offers to sit down and discuss the matter have been flatly and completely ignored to date. • They believe, by making comments like the stairway was not really used that much when a dozen residents said they use it daily, one lady who is a dedicated GBF volunteer, their character and intentions are being challenged. • They believe, by not meeting with residents to formally discuss possibilities, the GBF board has dismissed the matter. Now, a few things from the GBF point of view. A board of directors is not like a small business, use mine as an example, where someone has a beef with an ad, calls me, and we come to a resolution usually in that same call. I would not end such a call without an advertiser feeling good about the result, no matter whether it was my fault or not. To me, fault does not matter when a complaint arises. If a customer is upset, what can you do to
solve the heart of the issue? Nothing else matters. If not capped, the issue lingers, festers and, at some point, it will boil over. The GBF board has looked long and hard at the issue. They have approached the Town’s public works department and the matter was summarily dismissed. The Town does not have a dog in this fight and they don’t want one. Maybe if they bought the GBF building, tore it down and built another biodigester there they would care, but right now they don’t want any part of it. There was talk of GBF “giving” the land to the Town but because it connects to the GBF’s private property that is a non-starter. The board has long-term liability issues to deal with. It is not a fun thing to have constantly thrown in your face and, if GBF had a way around it, I think they would take it, but they do not. Insurance companies have great power. If they threaten to pull, it jeopardizes everything. They don’t want risk. They want to collect premiums and not pay a dime. It is true coverage is there and a staircase is not different than any other public area, but, remember, this spot is not public. It is on private land. I believe residents are ready to go to the mat on this one. There needs to a formal, friendly discussion among representatives from residents, GBF and Town so all cards are on the table. If there is no way to keep the stairs open, then that’s the way the cookie crumbles, but residents should be heard and opinions vetted just as the efforts and reasoning of the board should be communicated.
