Grimsby opens doors this Saturday Noshing at downtown eateries, a shoreline boat cruise being a chicken wing contest judge: these are just a handful of the things participants in this Saturday’s Door Open Grimsby event can take participate. There are 14 total locations - ranging from the Grimsby Fire Hall to the museum to Forty Creek Distillery to Grimsby Conservation Club all open for tours free of charge. The event runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Special side events, such as the cruise, $25pp, Taste of the Town (which includes a walking history tour of the core and

‘taste’ stops at six downtown restaurants), $30pp, do have a charge. As well, two homes #7 and #22 Nelles Blvd will be open for tours. “The Heritage Advisory Committee is coordinating the tours to highlight the history of the Shafer Brothers, who built a number of quality Arts and Crafts and Colonial revival homes in the early 20th Century in Grimsby,” said Michael Seamen, Grimsby director of planning. As well, Main Street will be closed for a classic car show.

When all is said and done, the key aspect to making the whole area a success will be the creation of an integrated marketing approach to make the spot a “knowable place”. He used Prince Edward County, the Finger Lakes region and Newfoundland as examples of successful “knowable place” marketing plans. “Newfoundland/ Labrador has the best marketing campaign. They’re not lying. it is as beautiful as it appears,” said Greenberg. “The whole province got together and bought in.”

As an immediate, low-cost project, Greenberg said all the components for a highly accessible, 10-km bike trail is already laid out. He likened possible success with that project to Sault Ste. Marie’s Hub Trail, which connects the whole city to the waterfront. The 50-hectare Prudhomme’s site won’t be just condos, he noted. In answering a question from Lincoln CAO Mike Kirkopolous about maintaining a Niagara feel for any result, Greenberg said that is paramount to any future success. “I understand U.S. travel writers have talked about the area’s authenticity. It is important to draw that out and highlight what is here.”

But “credit”, as it relates to mortgage financing, is much more than this! “Credit” is actually the aggregate of five different components, and the analysis of such is commonly referred to as “the 5 C’s of Credit”. Mortgage lenders rely on this multicomponent analysis to evaluate the overall creditworthiness of a borrower. This method incorporates both qualitative and quantitative measures. By understanding these 5 components of credit, you’ll then have the ability to assess your likelihood of qualifying for a mortgage - which can be a real timesaver down the road. 1) Capacity: Can you handle the payment? Capacity is the estimated amount a debt a borrower can carry, and is determined by a mathematical calculation known as the Total Debt Service Ratio. 2) Capital: Do you have a downpayment saved, plus extra cash for emergency? Capital is the measure of a borrower’s net worth, and it demonstrates the ability to manage one’s finances and accumulate assets while repaying your debt obligations. It is calculated by subtracting your liabilities from your assets. 3) Collateral: What are you buying? Collateral is the pledge of property, used as security against borrowed funds. 4) Credit (history): Do you pay your debts? Your past credit repayment history is often a very good indicator of your future payment behaviour. 5) Character: Would you lend yourself money? Town of Lincoln expands communication In an effort to ensure all resident are up to speed on happenings at the municipal level, Town of Lincoln is launching a new information campaign Lincolnâ€™s NewsNow. â€œSince starting a little over six months ago, one thing I heard in all corners of Town is we need to tell people what we are doing. We need to do a better job of is communicating. We need to inform people about whatâ€™s happened in our community,

Hudak’s 21-year run ends tomorrow By Mike Williscraft NewsNow As surely as the sun has risen the last 21-plus years MPP Tim Hudak has gone about his work representing his constituents. Tomorrow, Sept. 16, the sun, as it has been known to do will set, and Hudak will take that opportunity to ride off into it. Hudak, who was first elected to Queen’s Park representing the Niagara South Riding in 1995 - taking on the leadership of the Ontario PC Party in 2009 - announced last month he would resign his seat to take a chief executive officer position with the Ontario Real Estate Board. He didn’t start out as a reluctant MPP, but he certainly was a surprised one, when he won his first election. “I thought I would take one for the team and hopefully get a job as a policy advisor,” said Hudak, as he relaxed over a coffee. “I never thought I would win. I was on the outside, kind of an anti-establishment candidate. Once I got in, my plan was to work my tail off and deliver on programs for my riding.” That effort had him positioned for a leadership run in 2002 when Mike Harris retired, but he opted to keep his powder dry. “I was better positioned for down the road so I took a senior position in Jim Flaherty’s team. I liked him. He had great principles and personality,” said Hudak of the late PC leader.

Grimsby Terry Fox Run Sunday at PK Centre The Grimsby Terry Fox Run is preparing for another successful event where participants can walk, run, ride, rollerblade, stroll or wheelchair the 5km or 10km route. Registration begins at 9 am at the Grimsby Peach King Centre and the “run” begins promptly at 10 am. It has become an annual tradition for cancer survivors to give the official start, celebrating survivorship and giving living proof that cancer research saves lives. “When you cross over the finish line you realize that you were part of something bigger,” said Margaret McIntosh, Publicity Coordinator for the Grimsby Terry Fox Run Committee. “It doesn’t matter how you crossed it, or how fast you crossed it, you just hear the crowd cheering for you and you can only imagine what Terry Fox might have felt as the crowds cheered for him during his run.” Family participation is strongly encouraged. “This is a noncompetitive event where individuals, families and groups join together to raise

money for cancer research,” said McIntosh. “So many of us have been affected by this disease one way or another, and our reasons for fundraising vary. Dear Editor, I agree with you that Bartlett Road should have been completed in the ‘70s. My parents owned the land just below the escarpment and three acres along the first ridge. Our land was expropriated which caused the land to be

divided in the middle to make way for the road. I remember the owner of a beautiful house at the bottom of the escarpment on Park Road who was a senior, who could have lived there until she died but was forced to sell and moved out.

The powers of the rich and connected fought to prevent Bartlett Road at that time from being connected to Park Road South. They sure did not think of the future and how much safer the road would have been for the Town of Grimsby. Ruth Emerson

Communication always good While other municipalities seem to be communication challenged for whatever reason, the Town of Lincoln is being proactive in breaking down any remaining communication barriers these days. Since hiring its new CAO Mike Kirkopoulos from the City of Hamilton, and his strong communications background, Lincoln has left its neighbouring municipalities in the dust where conveying its message - events which have happened, programs which have come on line and impacts of what is happening to taxpayers. Tim, er, time to lighten the mood Between the truck access and all things biodigester this space has been weighed down with heavy topics for weeks. Not that those two items aren’t gravely important for very different reasons, let’s lighten the mood with bit of a grab bag this week. First out of the box, I took my daughter off to university on Labour Day weekend. That was an adventure-and-a-half for many reasons. A bit of a glitch had us all waiting on pins and needles to see if she would get into residence, which she did about 10 days before leaving for Ottawa. Like her old man, she was cutting it close. But just like in horse racing, an inch is as good as mile. She got in and that was all that mattered. I have to give Carleton U full marks for running an excellent show. They were right on top of every aspect and made the process quite seamless. We weren’t even out of the car and Sarah was indoctrinated as a Raven, Carleton’s moniker. Fellow students chanting “Pop that trunk!” to parents pulling up, among a host of other things, enveloped her in excitement before the vehicle had stopped. It was a great experience and I could not be more proud of my Blessed Trinity grad and not because she is taking a double degree in journalism and humanities, but because she is a hard-working, conscientious young lady who has

Grimsby Historical Society kicks off its fall programming with a Del Lord presentation from Shawn Roy of the Grimsby Museum. Some may know a bit about Lord’s rubbing elbows with Hollywood elite in the golden era of the silver screen, but no doubt you could pick up a thing or two by attending next Wednesday’s 7 p.m. presentation at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Parish Hall. And next month, Nelles Manor will be the scene of two dates for ghost tours at the 200-year-old Main Street West showpiece. I’m assuming that the majority of loads are quarry products of various grades. The problem is that the quarry source is on top of the escarpment and the destinations are below the escarpment,

but there are other ways of ‘getting the stuff down the hill’ so to speak. Anything that will pour or flow (including dry stone up to two inch size) can be moved through chutes and conveyors. After I left the Navy my first job was Project Manager to build a fertilizer plant taking large boulders of slag (a byproduct of steelmaking) and reduce them to powder. Part of the construction was a transfer chute and conveyor system to carry baseball sized

‘rocks’ to a ball mill unit some hundreds of feet away and it worked extremely well! It would be far cheaper to construct a mechanical transportation system similar to this to take product from the quarries down to a transfer station adjacent to the QEW than build a suitable highway. The construction could be designed to blend into the terrain. The project should be funded by the Ministry of Transport and maintained by the quarry owners. This idea is feasible.

It takes trucks off the roads. It is environmentally good. It uses mature technology and makes travel safer. It would also be much quicker to build. Any consulting engineers out there willing to look at this concept? Brian C. Merritt, Grimsby

We are attempting to ensure we communicate with you often and regularly about what is going on in our community and at Town Hall. On a monthly basis you can look for a section in the paper that will have an update from either Members of Council and/or senior staff and myself on what’s new and what you need to know. You can also look for us to ensure our advertisements are all in one area so they are easy to recognize and find. Town of Lincoln Speed Reduction Campaign WHAT ARE WE DOING The Town of Lincoln is launching a Speed Reduction Campaign to help improve motorist, cyclist and pedestrian safety. The Speed Reduction Campaign consists of a 3 Phase Approach. 1. Increase Awareness The Town of Lincoln is increasing driver awareness of speeding through use of Portable Digital Feedback Speed Signs. 2. Reduce Regulated Speeds The Town of Lincoln is teaming us with the Niagara Regional Police Department to help with targeted enforcement in problem areas across Lincoln. With increased driver awareness, lower speed limits and active law enforcement presence, we can reduce speeds together to make our community a safer place for all road users. PUBLIC CONSULTATION The Town of Lincoln will be hosting two (2) Public Information Centres (PICs) to inform the public and generate input. The PICs will follow an “Open House” format with information pertaining to the Speed Campaign on display and staff members on hand to discuss any issues/concerns you may have. Following the PICs, the Town will consider the comments received and address any outstanding concerns. The PICs will be held on the following dates:
