Key issues persists for biodigester By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Last week a Thirty Road resident said air quality conditions are quickly becoming untenable. Tuesday, responding to a letter of concern submitted before the matter arose by resident Michael Rozender, the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change will seek answers to the odour issue as part of its review of a proposed biodigster operating amendment applied for by Grimsby Energy. In his Aug. 8 letter to the MOECC, Rozender stated concerns with the construction of the effluent pond on the site, as well as how the levels for acceptable odours were arrived at in an “odour consultant’s” report. “...(It) showed a

high potential for foul odours (primarily hydrogen sulphide) in the July-October months. It was revised to show an acceptable average level over the course of 12 months, as odours produced in the winter months are minimal.” Rozender noted Tuesday the concentration would be much higher in the summer months, resulting in the issues faced by Thirty Road resident Tony Ferrara in recent weeks. “At this time, the ministry is in the early stages of reviewing the proposed amendment request and your comments will be considered as part of that review, which will include a request that the proponent respond to the items you have raised,” wrote Zeljko Romic, MOECC environmental program coordinator.

cided to amp things up a little this year in recognition of Canada’s 150th birthday. “I used to own a bakery, so baking is a passion of mine, but so is

the Terry Fox Run. I thought I would put the two together this year,” said Post. Taking orders up to Wednesday, Sept. 13, Post is baking her sig-

nature butter tarts and selling them for $10/ half-dozen with all proceeds going to the Smithville Run. “It will be a lot of work, but I figure if

When people say they are too busy to come out I just say there is always time.” This year’s Smithville run will have a different route and different starting point as work is underway on the township’s MURS project on the arena grounds. “We will be starting

in the parking lot behind the township offices,” said Post. “It would be easiest for participants to park and enter off Colver Street using South Lincoln High’s parking lot. We have to keep the firehall and township hall parking clear in case there is a fire call.” A new 10-km route has been laid out through town for Terry Fox Run participants. “We have also planned a new twokm route to try to make it as inclusive as possible,” said Post.

“And it is important to note, you don’t have to run. You can walk, wheel jog, whatever you like. The important thing is to get out and participate.” Registration opens for the run at 10:30 a.m. on Sun., Sept. 17. “The run will start, officially, at 11 a.m. but we keep the course open until 2 p.m. so there is a lot of flexibility,” noted Post. People can register online at: www.terryfox.org

In Smithville, registration forms are also available at Avondale, Rx Guardian Drug Mart and Smithvile Pizzeria. There is no fee and it is a non-competitive event. “Really, the important thing is just to come out and take part,” said Post. “We’ve had little kids show up and give $1. That’s cool. Abandoned car blocks Main Street Downtown Grimsby was wall-towall vehicles Saturday afternoon after a car was abandoned in the middle of the street still in gear. The car, which was involved in a hit-and-run in Winona earlier in the day was driven to Grimsby on three tires. When it did not negotiate a right turn off Elm on Main, the driver fled on foot after threatening John Dunstall, owner of The Old Firehall

buidling, who came out to see what had caused all the noise. Two men who saw what was happening approached and the man fled down Ontario Street. The two men pursued, tackled the man, and held him until police arrived, said Dunstall. An Oakville man has been arrested and faces charges of fail to remain at the scene of an accident and dangerous driving.

Since then, the Mountain View Cadet Flying Training Centre has established a successful glider and power pilot scholarship where hundreds of cadets have successfully earned their licences allowing them to fly in the cadet and civilian world. The air cadet program is open to all youth between the ages of 12-18 years old with a focus on leadership, citizenship and healthy living. Becoming a pilot is more than just learning how to fly. It also takes hard work in learning and understanding how the aircraft works and is put together. Warrant Officer Second Class Glenn Butler from 62 Phantom Squadron in Grimsby pursued this unique knowledge this summer attending the Glider Pilot Scholarship Course at Mountain View Cadet Flying Training Centre from July 9th to Aug. 18. The Glider Pilot Scholarship is a six-week training program that results in successful candidates graduating with their Transport Canada Glider Pilot Licence. Cadet Butler’s favourite part about the training so far has been, “Learning how to fly and gradually being given more and more control of the aircraft without my instructor’s guidance is amazing!” There are approximately 70 air cadets who complete the Glider Pilot Scholarship Course at Mountain View just like Cadet Butler. When asked what he enjoys the most about training at Mountain View, he said, “I am impressed with the professional atmosphere at Mountain View Cadet Flying Training Centre. Staff and cadets work very well together because everyone has the same goal and are passionate about why they

The Caistor Centre resident has been an active paarticipant in the friendly competition since she moved to the area from Brampton nine years ago. “I look at the whole book and see what I want to try this year,” said Klassen of how she decides what to enter. “Every year I look

Only problem with that is I forget what I saw by the time the next fair rolls around.” Her involvement in fair competitions goes far beyond her neardecade locally. It’s my chance to see them and catch up.” As well as being and entrant, Klassen also volunteers her time as judge for the West Niagara Fair, of course, only judging categories in which she has not entered. “Competing has become quite a

family tradition. I got my kids to enter things when they were young and now my grandkids are entering things, too,” she smiled. The categories which interest her run the full range from flowers to baking and vegetables to crafts. “My husband keeps the vegetable garden, so I go out and see what looks good,” said Klassen, who got involved with the West Niagara Agriculture Society’s

That is how Commanding Officer Dave Leonard of Royal Canadian Air Cadets 62 Grimsby Phantom Squadron, summarized his group’s 10-day trip to historic Canadian battlefield sites in Europe. “We covered the countries of Netherlands, Belgium, and

France visiting such sites as Juno/Omaha Beaches, Aramashee, Vimy, Beaumont-Hamel, and various other battle sites remembering the sacrifices our soldier made for our freedoms,” said CO Leonard. “The visit to both the Canadian Juno Beach and American Omaha Beach really struck home with a lot of the cadets as to the intensity of the DDay landings and Operation Overlord.”

Grimsby Museum hosts workshop A workshop planned at Grimsby Museum this month will give students an introduction to the dramatic arts! It runs for two days and students are expected to attend both days. There will be various activities including games and team building exercises. Two age groups will be participating, each have a specially curated list of games and activities that suit their age range. • Ages 7-9 years: This group will run from 9:30-11 a.m. both days. This group will focus mostly on team

Support those who support you Progress is tough. There are a lot of reasons to not like it, but those rarely results in any stemming of the tide. There have been many questions about the big box store opening up in Winona. They won’t get any free ink here. It could be considered as news, but a business opening should be marketed through ads unless there is an inherent benefit to the community. Big box stores offer little to no benefit and, in some cases, prove significantly detrimental, especially in this case since the new operation is not in the Town of Grimsby, so not even tax dollars come this way. Downtown Grimsby has been the subject of an ongoing NewsNow ‘Shop Local’ campaign to help businesses suffering from the impact of the July 6 fire. The same shop local principles apply to all our communities, however. It can’t be said there aren’t some someplace, but how many of you have seen big box store names on the backs of minor soccer or call jerseys, for example. It is the small businesses which make our communities run and thrive. They are worthy of support. M.W.

Thanks for the memories... Gotta say, this is one of the more sad column’s I’ve had to write but one which needs to be done, nonetheless. Just to the left of these words, you will see the name of one Tom Haire. This may be the last time you see the man’s name printed in a newspaper and that’s saying something since he has been involved in newspapering for well over 60 years. Since 1997, Tom has been Glen Sather to my Wayne Gretzky (in my dreams) or Belichick to my Brady (again, in my dreams). My point is, why I have been doing what I have been doing very much in the public eye since 1997, Tom has been in the background, a steady rock of advice every day since I started at The Grimsby Independent May 10, 1997. At some point down the road, when people look back on Niagara West newspaper lore, the seminal story of how Grimsby News was actually hatched has every bit to do with one Mr. Tom Haire. I had just gotten canned for disputing a publishers decision - big shock there - and two days later, at the very first Greater Grimsby Open Mini-Putt run by the Kinsmen Club, a couple of Kin strongly suggested I start a paper to compete with The Independent. Not sure if this was realistic or just fuelled by a few “pops” which had been enjoyed that day, I ventured off that night to St. Catharines to visit Tom and seek his considered opinion. Over many hours, a couple of bowls of chili and A LOT of coffee, we matched up what we knew. In the time I had been in town, I had developed many contacts. We were

MIKE WILLISCRAFT able to match the people I knew with the approximate budgets of their businesses which Tom knew as publisher for Niagara West publications back in the day. Working those numbers through, we estimated what we needed to launch and survive in the market. If we could get 40 per cent of the market off the hop, we would be in the game. We mapped out our first year budget on the back of a plain old table napkin, which I still have in a box some place. When all was said and done after Year 1, we were within $500 of that prospective budget mapped out at his kitchen table. Ridiculous when you think about it. In hindsight, we needed to be that exact as I can tell you - living by one of the many Tom-isms, “don’t write a cheque if you don’t have the money in the bank” - we needed to be that precise as there were many weeks when we balancing right on the edge of the $500 overdraft (all the bank would allow).. That is just one simple lesson I learned from a guy who has lived and breathed newspapers his entire working life. When people say, “he’s

forgotten more about newspapers than I know”, that’s Tom Haire. You know the guy can do something right when I have hired him three times. He was downsized and waiting for me in 1997. Then he retired a first time in 1998. Then he came back and I hired him again. Since I started up NewsNow, he came to work for me after taking a Torstar package to downsize their Niagara operation. Now, finally (maybe) he is moving on again. The Kawartha Lakes area is his old stomping grounds and that is where he plans to return. This is a tough business and just plain insane - at times - as an independent publisher, but one of the handful of people who not only understand what it takes to make things happen but also the mechanics of how it happens is Tom Haire. For 20-plus years he has been a sounding board, a confidante and an all around good egg. You just don’t replace people like that. If you’re really lucky you, good reader, will have one, maybe two, people come along in your life who may have a similar impact on you and what you are trying to accomplish and I hope you cling to them as long as I have to Tom. Helluva guy! Not so good at euchre (at least not as good as he thinks he is) and appreciates a stiff rye and ginger. There are a few people out there in newspaperland who would have worked with Tom at one time or another. All are welcome to stop by Teddy’s this Thursday, Sept. 7, after 4:30 p.m. for a little goodbye social.
