Twin 16-storey towers, continued waterfront plan in Casablanca quadrant’s future
The quickly evolving Casablanca quadrant area may soon bear twins – twin 16-storey condominiums that is. The proposed site for the latest project to target the northwest corner of Grimsby would include ground floor retail and services with a combined 179
units above. The building are proposed for 10 Windward Drive, the location of the Planet Nite Club, which never did open for business. As well, Grimsby’s director of planning, Michael Seaman, told council Sept. 19 that Ni-
agara Region has changed the guidelines of its Niagara Waterfront Enhancement Program, waiving a former threeyear moratorium on accessing more funds. Grimsby received a $1 million grant in 2014. Any addtional funds would go See WATERFRONT, Page 2

WATERFRONT From Page 1 a series of components already planned. They would provide new trail routes, and waterfront access and improve connectivity to existing trails to and along the waterfront in the vicinity of the Forty Mile Creek and the Marina. These include the trail sections,
bridge across the Forty Mile Creek, shoreline work and works to improve accessibility. “The grant would be applied to the costs of design and construction of these elements,” said Seaman. The grant application is for $888,000, basically 50 per cent of the projected costs.

The Greenbelt and Tender Fruit Lands west of Casablanca Blvd in Grimsby are protected under the Greenbelt Plan but we must work to make sure they remain that way. • The 10 year Greenbelt Provincial Review findings released in May 2016 upheld these protections. The review is now open for public comment again. • The new GO Train station being planned can successfully co-exist alongside the Greenbelt in Grimsby as part of our complete community. • We have until October 31st, 2016 to let the Province know one more time that we want the Tender Fruit Lands and the Irish Grove Wood Lot to remain protected in the Greenbelt. Is this September your last back-to-school season? If so, then you are probably already making post-graduation plans, which most likely include getting a job and moving out of your parents’ home or your student rental, as soon as you can afford to live on your own. Your home-ownership dream may be a longterm goal, but, if you start saving as soon as you begin your career, you will accumulate the funds you’re going to need for that eventual house purchase. You will also develop a very strong savings ethic that will see you through financiallyadverse times. When I meet with first-time home buying clients, I insist that they complete an “As if” exercise, as part of our mortgage pre-approval plan. To start living “as if” is a very effective exercise, and the best way to determine if you are financially ready to own your first home. What does it mean to “start living as if”? If you live at home, or already renting your first apartment, set aside a predetermined sum of money each month as if you already own the home where you are paying for a mortgage, property taxes, utilities, and other costs related to home-ownership. For example, let’s say that you currently rent, and your rent is $800 per month. If we determine that you are going to need $1800 per month to own and operate a home, then you need to start saving $1000 per month. Living “as if” is a great way to simulate the experience of home ownership - minus all the other responsibilities that come with that home-ownership commitment! The money you save by living as if you already own a home will go towards your downpayment when you are ready to purchase. This is also a great exercise for existing homeowners who are contemplating moving to a more expensive home.

A $40,000 provincial grant will be put to good use at the Lincoln Centre by the Town of Lincoln, says CAO Mike Kirkopoulos. The grant is part of an $11.5 million program to support Elderly Persons Centres. “The Lincoln Centre is the Lincoln Senior Club and they are an integral part of the Lincoln,” said Kirkopoulos. “A very dedicated group of
seniors facilitate, teach, organize and lead a large number of activities for the older adults in our Community. Station 1 packs ’em in for open house Grimsby Fire Department’s Station 1 was a place of wonder for hundreds and hundreds of young, and young at heart on Sunday. “This was maybe our best
attendance ever, but definitely most young children I’ve ever seen here for the open house, and that’s great. That’s what it’s all about,” said Chief Mike Cain.
Perfect weather greeted all for interactive displays, demonstrations, educational sessions. A colouring station, balloon creations and snacks were also highlights.

Rite of fall at Jordan Museum One of the most popular events of the fall season is set to go this Saturday, Oct. 1 at Jordan Museum – Pioneer Day. The lawsuit says the Province of Ontario failed to properly care for and protect people who attended or resided at the Schools. The lawsuit says that students were emotionally, physically, and psychologically traumatized by their experiences at the Schools. The Province of Ontario denies these claims. The Court has not decided whether the Plaintiff or the Province of Ontario is right. Are you included?

Koskie Minsky LLP are the lawyers for the plaintiff and the class. You don’t have to pay Koskie Minsky LLP for this case. Instead, the lawyers will be paid only if there is recovery of money or other benefits for the Class. If there is success, the lawyers would either receive a portion of recovery or be paid by the Province of Ontario. What are your options? Good news out of Grimsby council Grimsby council – and West Lincoln council, too, for that matter – have been pummelled on this page for some truly heinous decisions, and rightfully so. But that does not mean that, on occasion, some good things are not also being done. In this instance, the ongoing waterfront development project in Grimsby, one day soon, will be a shining star for the whole community. It was very good news which planning director Michael Seaman brought to council this month that Niagara Region has another round of available grant money for which the waterfront project is eligible. The Town received a tidy $1 million right before the last election (funny how that worked out) and now the program has been renewed. It still would have been nice if the Town had anted up and purchased the Place Polonaise property, but they really wanted more development. Gone now. Regardless, the project is a winner and by far the best thing this council, and recent versions, has done. M.W.
Experience creates life’s lessons It is one of life’s mysteries to me, but always one I appreciated. Since I was old enough to hang out with friends, I was always the responsible one: the one who parents trusted, not just my friends. As a kid, you just don’t notice dynamics such as those, and it’s a very good thing because everyone would try to get away with a whole lot more, then you do something stupid and everyone gets in trouble. The reason I never got was because I did all the same things my friends did. We played Nicky Nicky Nine Door (if you know what that is). We bumpered behind cars in the winter. Heck, I even stole once, in Windsor when I was six years old... the booty? Prized Partridge Family cards from a convenience store. I got busted when my running buddy and I went up to the cash with front pockets filled with a half-dozen packs each. Luckily, the end of my career as a criminal. Yet, friends of my parents would always say on a Friday night, “You be home by 10. Oh, you’re going to be out with Mike. Alright, midnight, but not a minute later.” Again, I’m not really sure why (I think it was the voice of my grandmother in my ear, ‘Michael, what would your father have done?’, which kept me on the straight and narrow. We never really took advantage of the extra rope we were given. But having it there taught me an ongoing life lesson, just because you can do a particular thing, doesn’t mean you go ahead and do it. For example, in my high school, I only went to Grade 13 so I could play another year of basketball. What I really wanted to do was quit high school and go train
MIKE WILLISCRAFT harness horses at the Ontario Jockey Club, which was Mohawk and Greenwood Raceways back in the day. That was just after the era of Garden City Raceway in St. Catharines, which was the third track in the OJC, which had closed. For a teenager that seemed like a great life. Harness racing folks are great people, working outdoors (winter never bothered me), and lots of fun. Where I was a bit of an oddity with my fellow teens was I didn’t mind getting to the barn at 6 a.m. every day. As low man on the totem pole I had to get there early to feed and get everything in order for when the other fellas arrived. Our plan was always to get all the horses jogged or worked out by 11 a.m. or noon at the latest. That was for two reasons. First, we would take lunch, then pack up and get ready to race that night. Or, if not heading to London, Windsor, Elmira or some place in between, we would head out to the farm for some real work. In the spring and early summer that meant hay and straw as my employer also contracted with neighbouring farms to clear their fields. We filled their barn and kept the rest. I’ll tell you right now, good reader, if you have teen who whines about putting dishes
in a dishwasher, or dropping garbage by the curb, seek and find a farmer who will take that youth for one day of farm work, just one, and any hint of discontent will be long gone, long gone. In an age when the only way to get a lot of teens to move is Pokemon Go, a day on a farm would give them a great deal of perspective, sense of work ethic and appreciation for where food comes from. The background of farm work and key phrase burned into my brain by my favourite journalism instructor Dick MacDonald, “If you’re going to go out with the boys, you have to get up with the men.” He told us this at an 8 a.m. class the night after we all attended our first college pub night. One buddy had his head down on a typewriter (yes, that’s right, a typewriter!!). Another, head in hands rubbing his temples. I was just trying to exist in the back of the room. He gave us a barely passing grade on our assignment for the day base solely on us promising to heed this lesson as he noted, someone will pay you do a job and you better show up and be prepared because there will be someone else waiting, competing, to take that seat. For that reason, I have never taken a day for granted. In 30 years of work I think I missed, maybe, three total weeks of time. Heck, the day my appendix burst I finished the paper’s deadline and drove my self to the doctor’s clinic and then to WLMH’s ER. Now, that’s not what I would even consider normal, but it’s me. I’m afraid I only learned how to work and that is with one speed, full. Go hard til you achieve your task and keep going til you arrive at your destination.

I think I have shown considerable restraint, as I can see you have, given some of the goings-on in this community. This is about you as opposed to issues. I was very appreciative to see you throw your hat in the ring for the PC race. It is rare to
see a high quality candidate come out of the private sector to run. Too often we get the same old, same old. Not this time, though, and I hope everyone recognizes you are anything but that.
