Twelve of the candidates vying for a seat on Lincoln council all care a great deal about their town. They are also all committed to doing their best to serve the needs of the residents of Lincoln. So how to decide? Candidate Nicholas Kuhl, running in Ward 3, may have summed it up best at the end of the evening when he said the municipal level of government has the most direct impact on residents’ day-to-day lives – ask the tough

questions, elect the person who you believe will best represent you. Twelve of the 13 candidates seeking a seat around the council table answered questions posed to them by members of the audience when the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce hosted an all-candidates debate Tuesday night at the Lincoln Centre. Ward 3 candidate Paul MacPherson said Bartlett Road in Grimsby is the best solution for carrying trucks up and down the escarpment. “I don’t see Tufford as the answer.” Ward 3 candidate Kevin Strooband said we have to bring the trucks down safely. “We have to talk to the people affected and look at best practices in other communities to see how it was resolved. Ward 3 candidate Dan Warren said it was ridiculous to have the new road go through Beamsville. Ward 3 candidate Nicholas Kuhl said “Grimsby has more political clout in the region” and a new crossing going through Beamsville shouldn’t be “our cross to bear.” Ward 4 candidate and incumbent Wayne MacMillan said Bartlett Road in Grimsby made more sense as QEW access was already there. Ward 4 candidate Geoffrey Barlow said that as a firefighter he had been to some very bad accidents so this was an issue close to his heart. Ward 4 candidate David Furry Bartlett Road in Grimsby is where the crossing should go. Ward 4 candidate Lynn Timmers said the crossing should be at Bartlett Road. “I have been downtown many times when no one could move because a truck was stuck.”

Traffic calming measures such as crossbanding may also be implemented. “All these little measures will make the roads safer, that is what we are hoping to achieve,” said DiPaola. Having a new escarpment crossing doesn’t solve all the exisiting problems, he added. There are safety issues with all the current roads that cross over the escarpment and the Master Plan – which replaces the former Class Environmental Assessment done back in 1997 – offers

solutions to address problems with grading, lack of signage and curbing. The Master Plan also recommends other measures should these not be effective in reducing the number of accidents. Traffic patterns on seven existing escarpment roadways were examined as art of the process. During peak periods, Victoria Avenue sees 104 trucks every hour; Mountain Street, Grimsby sees 43, with Mountain Street, Beamsville next at 20 trucks per hour. The most truck accidents in recent years, took place on Mountain Street, Grimsby. The study also de-

termined that more than half of the trucks, 53 per cent, had a destination or originated in Grimsby, Lincoln or West Lincoln. A roundabout could be built at Ridge Road West in Grimsby and steep grades may have to be corrected but those changes are in the 5-15 year part of the master plan. Instead of outright banning trucks and building an escarpment crossing now, the improvements will be monitored for several years. If they are effective, then a new escarpment crossing won’t be needed. If not, the region will move ahead with property ac-

quisition for a new escarpment crossing in the Tufford Road/Sann Road areas, identified in the master plan as the preferred location. All improvements identified in the Master Plan are subject to approvals and funding. The cost of the master plan was about $440,000.

Thanksgiving Festival runs Oct. 10-13 The 40th Annual Ball’s Falls Thanksgiving Festival on Friday, Oct. 10 to Monday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., features more than 200 selected artisans displaying and selling their creative wares such as pottery, paintings, jewellery, lawn ornaments and clothing. Daily live entertainment, children’s activities, local craft brewers and wineries too and lots of great food choices. The festival has become a long-standing, favourite tradition for both families and visitors who come from far and wide to experience the Ball’s Falls annual festival and its natural setting. In addition to the arts, crafts and wares, you can enjoy the incredible beauty of this 19th Century hamlet, set amid the majestic Niagara Escarpment and Twenty Valley eco-sys-

tem. The event is a major fundraiser for the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), with revenues from admission directed to a number of NPCA’s conservation programs. There will be magic shows and numerous heritage displays to keep visitors engaged. Ball’s Falls Conservation Area is located south of Vineland on Reg. Rd. 24. Follow Directional signs to Ball’s Falls for festival parking. Shuttle buses will be running from the parking areas throughout the weekend. I am a newcomer to politics with lots of enthusiasm & energy. I fell in love with Caistor Centre and moved here in 2009. I live here now, retired on my horse farm. I am keen to approach all issues that matter to our community, with team work.

ISSUES:

WIND TURBINES: We need strong municipality involvement. We have the democratic right to make decisions on policies that have been put in place and the right to know how the Provincial government can change laws. There are many qestions... we need answered. BUILD NURSING HOME: We want to stay in our community. DITCHES: I will be a solid voice on having the ditches cleared for our farm fields to properly drain in order for farmer’s crops to grow. PAVING ROADS: I have a strong interest in having our gravel roads paved, making our roads safer for all especially school buses. LIGHTS: Safer intersections needed in our community. SNOW REMOVAL: Snow drifts to be removed as quickly and effectively as possible to prevent accidents MORE ROAD SIGNS: Improve road signage for school buses, children at play, children crossing signs, animal farm - slow down signs, advance stop signage, motocycle slow down signs. GROWTH: I will advocate an increase in new retail opportunities in our town. We need to keep our dollars in town. Let’s not lose the next generations to big cities because we can’t accommodate our growing population. RENOVATE HOCKEY ARENA: Not to build new. Our taxes would go up. Grimsby Peach Kings mural unveiled, celebrated The Grimsby Peach Kings Centre was packed with decades of hockey talent, all gathered together to celebrate the unveiling and installation of the Grimsby Peach Kings mural Sunday night. The collage provides a snapshot of Grimsby’s hockey history: hockey officially had its start in 1893; the Peach Kings were named by HH Wylie in 1910; Grimsby’s new arena opened in 1922, only the 4th indoor arena in Canada at the time. It makes for a good

read. The mural is the fruition of an idea of Marilyn Owen’s. She drew together a small team of people to make it happen, said Dave Kadwell, who was one of those people. “It was all done by teamwork,” he said. “It is important to remember where you are from,” said Pete Horachek, Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach and Peach Kings alumnus, who was at the unveiling. “It is all about respect for the game and the players.”

Artist Rick Manners, together with Marilyn and Al Owen, Don Kilgallen, Sarah Sweeney, Dave Kadwell, and Dan Nielson, took the mural from concept to reality. Three years and more than 2,000 pieces of memorabilia were narrowed down to those appearing on the mural now installed at the Peach Kings Centre.

Save the Wood Lot On September 6th over 325 people came out to visit the Irish Grove Woodlot and learn about its natural values to the people of Grimsby. The Region of Niagara is conducting an Environmental Assessment, EA, on the possible extension of Livingston Ave from Casablanca Blvd to Oaks Rd. which would take the road into lands defined as Protected Country Side in the Greenbelt Plan and it would extend westerly past the Town’s urban boundary which is presently Casablanca Blvd. The Irish Grove Woodlot is the largest wood lot on the Lake Ontario Plain in Grimsby and it is recognized as a Conservation Area Significant Woodlot in the Official Plan of the Region. The road extension would cut through the woodlot. The above facts were not relayed to the public in the Region’s Notice of Environmental Assessment. There was to be a public information session in September on the EA but it has now been delayed until after the municipal election by the Region. Tell your candidates for aldermen and the candidates for Mayor that building roads should not come before proper land use planning. Can we afford for the Region to build a road to nowhere? Do you want this significant wood lot in Grimsby threatened unnecessarily? The Woodlot is a living museum. It cannot be replaced. Citizens for Save the Woodlot

Auxiliary gets nice letter in the mail The Rankin Run has come through again. The major cancer research fundraiser chipped in another $50,000 last week, bringing its total contribution to West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary to $350,000. “It was nice to get that in a letter,” said Auxiliary publicity chair Carol Richmond. Auxiliary president John Riddell said the group completed its pledge of $170,000 for laparoscopic gynecological equipment and $180,000 for a new ultra sound unit. Oct. 24 the group hosts its fourth annual lasagna dinner at St. Andrews Hall at 5:30 p.m. tickets are $20 pp. Tickets can be purchased at the Auxiliary office inside WLMH’s front door.

the burning of the synthetic materials from which your furniture and numerous other household items are now made. Even the walls of your house itself are likely formed from particle board which gives off highly toxic formaldehyde fumes when it burns. It also burns hotter and faster than wood due to the glue that holds it together. A modern synthetic-filled room – think of the plastic, foam and rubber in everything from carpets, picture frames to toys – will “flash over” in about three minutes. In three minutes, the fire department may not even know you have a fire. In three minutes the room is fully engulfed in roaring flames, the toxic black smoke is thick and rolling, and the temperature is about 700 degrees Celsius.

A firefighter in full bunker gear could not survive. First responders will reach your home in 5 minutes, 20 seconds; a full response with all trucks on scene is 9 minutes 20 seconds. “Picture that fire moving through your house,” said Scott Campbell, fire prevention inspector. “We are still two minutes away. At flashpoint, we are looking at a recovery, not a rescue.” The message is clear: you are responsible for your own safety in a fire. “We have spent a century glorifying firefighters,” said Cain adding the image of the firefighter sliding down a pole jumping into a fire truck and racing to your home to carry you to safety isn’t realistic – and could cost you your life. And your dog isn’t going to wake you up, it will more than

likely be overcome by the toxic smoke, but there are three lines of defence: public education, the fire code, and emergency response. “For the longest time, emergency response received the most resources and the most attention,” said Cain. “The priority has reversed.” Your best defence is to prevent a fire. Unattended cooking remains at the top of the list locally for fire causes. Holiday centrepieces are filled with foliage, plastics and burning cancles. Dispose of cigarettes safely – they can smolder inside couches for hours. And having a working smoke alarm on each level is the minimum legal requirement; add more, including inside sleeping areas, and keep them in good working order by checking them every month.

Alarms have expiry dates Having working smoke alarms in your home is the cheapest and easiest way to save your life and the lives of your family members. And of course, it is the law to have at least one alarm on each level of your home. But alarms have a shelf life. “Check the manufacturers instructions,” said Grimsby firefighter Mike Osadciw, adding alarms should be replaced about every seven to 10 years. A recent check for working alarms in Grimsby homes turned up a few alarms that were well past their expiry date. “They basically become ineffective,” said Osadciw while looking over two alarms that dated back to about 1970. There are now several different options for home owners for example, there are alarms that have a combination of alarm and voice warning and some that communicate with each other.

from the ceiling downward. Heat and toxic smoke will continue to thicken until smoke spread evolves to flame spread. In the absence of detection (i.e. working smoke alarms), there is little warning and there will be no escape. This description is typical of a residential fire, said the chief.

The Grimsby Fire Department used the cells to demonstrate how quickly the fire will catch and spread during its recent Open House. A cell was filled with modern furnishings made of synthetic materials which burn rapidly creating toxic

smoke. The fire created an immense cloud of thick black smoke so quickly the decision was made to put it out to avoid contact with all the visitors to the open house. This damage was done in less than three minutes.

Busy year for West Lincoln Fire Service Check your smoke alarms, plan your escape So far in 2014, the West Lincoln Fire Service has responded to 275 calls. In addition to fire suppression, they respond to medical calls and motor vehicle accidents. And in spite of all the warnings and information out there, some still aren’t getting the message about smoke alarms. “Most people don’t think it will happen to them,” said Fire Chief Dennis Fisher. “People need to be diligent about preventing fires, having smoke alarms and about making an escape plan and practising it so every member of the family knows what to do in case of a fire.” “You won’t have time to think on your feet and try to figure out how to get grandma out

of the house in her wheelchair. Unless you walk through it, you aren’t going to know how long it will take.” Part of your plan needs to include two ways to get out of your home in the event fire or smoke is blocking the way. Inhaling toxic fumes even once is enough to render you unconscious so there is no time to think about how to get out once the need arises. Plan a meeting place outside and call 911 once you are out of the house. In rural areas where you may not have a neighbour close enough to call 911 for you, make sure you have a working, fully charged cell phone with you. “And don’t go back inside, no matter what,” said Fisher.

Training, education, key elements of fire service There are 47 firefighters covering the huge geographical area that is West Lincoln. Keeping up-to-date on training and providing public education are important elements to the service provided to the community, says Fire Chief Dennis Fisher. “Our fire prevention, fire safety officer, Eric Weaver, goes into the schools and talks to the kids about escape plans and fire safety,” said Fisher. “We also do tours of the fire

station for classrooms,” he added. Fire prevention is a big part of what the fire service does, said Fisher. “There are still preventable fire fatalities every year so the more prevention we can do the better the chance of saving lives,” he said. West Lincoln firefighters are currently undergoing confined space training. “It’s important to do training and keep up with standards.”

Message from the Ontario Fire Marshal Did you know that $14 can save your life? That’s right, $14. That’s what it takes to buy these: a smoke alarm and a battery. Together, they give you early warning if a fire starts in your home. But that won’t ensure you escape a fire safely. You also need something that’s completely free - a home fire escape plan. Sit down with everyone in your home and talk about how you will escape each room in your home if the smoke alarms sound. Then practice the escape plan. Because the fire department may not arrive fast enough to rescue you. • Fire spreads so fast you may have less than 60 seconds to safely escape a fire. • It’s the law to maintain working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. • For added protection, install smoke alarms in all bedrooms.

• Sit down with everyone in your home and talk about how to escape from each room in a fire. Identify two ways out of each room if possible. • Determine who’s going to help young children, older adults or anyone else who may need assistance. • And make sure you have a meeting place outside the home so that everyone can be accounted for once outside. • Call 9-1-1 from outside the home and NEVER re-enter a burning building. So there you have it. Protect your family from fire: install working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your household. Pioneer Day in Jordan, a perfect trip back in time So it rained a little. It didn’t stop the steady stream of visitors from enjoying Jordan Museum’s Pioneer Day last Saturday. With food, entertainment and plenty of activities for families, the day was a huge hit. Beth Labrie, as teacher Miss Welstead who taught

back in 1908, held classes in the school house explaining to visitors what school was like over a century ago. Over in the Fry house, spinning and weaving were being demonstrated. “We come every year,” said visitor Mollie Corbeau. “The kids really enjoy it.”

She was one of the prime initiators in developing the Grimsby Sk8 Park for the youth of the community, as well as a volunteer at McNally House and the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Joan embraced the community she lived in and was loved by everyone. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed dearly. The grant will assist the Town in building 2.8 kms of biking, walking and nature trails along and near the lakefront near the stretch of beach where Place Polonaise and Fifth Wheel Truck Stop are currently. â€œBy awarding $1 million from the Lakefront Enhancement Grant program, the Region was clearly impressed by the quality of Grimsbyâ€™s plans for its west end waterfront. The Grimsby West End Waterfront Plan is an excellent plan, developed by the community for the community, which will create a significant recreational destination for the res-

idents of the Town of Grimsby and Niagara,â€? said Reg. Coun. Debbie Zimmerman. The total cost of the project is projected to be more than $3.2 million taking five phases to complete. The walking trail will, one day, connect from the regional pumping station to Fifty Point Conservation Area. Adjacent to the walking route will be a residential component on the Place Polonaise property which will have a â€œmain streetâ€? feel to it, said Grimsby director of planning Michael Seamen, who added the Town would work closely with any developer to achieve this. The project, approved by council last spring, will be paid for by development charges, developer contributions from Place Polonaise, the Region grant and Town of Grimsby.

Now 80 is not a small number, but with 12 candidates on the stage, by the time you account for family support, you’re talking about 15 or 16 people for each of the three contested ward races. Yes, it was rainy and lousy, but don’t come crying to me when you are wondering how a $15 million arena could be built without a proper kitchen in the canteen or any of the other beefs I have heard in recent weeks. Tonight (Thursday) night will be the mayoral and regional councillor debate at the Lincoln Centre at 7 p.m. Five solid mayoral candidates are contesting the seat vacated by long-time Mayor Bill Hodgson who is running for the regional councillor spot versus W. Peter Randall. With a solution to the escarpment crossing issue,

sort of, in the offing having a major presence at the regional level will be key to steering the findings of a Master Plan being developed right now. ******* Saving the best for last, Mr. Lyle Killins. There was a GREAT, and it really was great, show of all things Grimsby Peach Kings on Sunday evening with the unveiling of the highly anticipated mural done by the phenomenal Rick Manners, another guy I just love to death. The Peach Kings are a remarkable story and the fact it is an ongoing story as opposed to a history piece is due to the efforts of one man, Lyle Killins. He will be the first to say, and that is why he is so respected, there were a ton of volunteers involved in bringing the organization back from bankruptcy and extinction to the pinnacle of amateur hockey and an organization respected around the province. He took an organization that could not even be considered a shell and made it a Cadillac, a winner. Thanks, Lyle! Lyle has handed the torch to long-time coach Dave Brownridge who continues to do great things as the next Peach Kings era continues to unfold. Seriously, in an age when statues of key people in sports history at their place of “work” are becoming common, Grimsby should erect a statue of the man in front of the Peach King Centre one day.

Ship burned in Indonesia By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The former Canadian Ambassador, a product of Port Weller Dry Docks, sailed the lakes and oceans for 30 years before being badly burned in a fire while unloading coal at Bantan, Indonesia, Sept. 12, 2013. The ship saw only limited Great Lakes service. It was initially part of the Upper Lakes Shipping fleet but operated on saltwater under their Marbulk Shipping. It was renamed Ambassador

Shipwreck in 1986 and, for much of 2000, sailed on charter to the Algoma Central Corp. as Algosea before reverting to Ambassador. Ambassador was sold to Indonesian interests and renamed Pramudita in 2012. It then sailed for the Far East and worked in the coal trade. The damage in the blaze was extensive but there has been no report as yet of the ship either being repaired or consigned for scrap.
