All-candidates face off in Lincoln Listen to complete debate audio at newsnowniagara.ca Over 200 people crowded into the Lincoln Centre in Beamsville for the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce’s all-candidates meeting on Tuesday night. All five candidates vying to be Niagara West Riding’s Member of Parliament were on hand. Green Party candidate Sid Frere got the ball rolling telling those on hand

his party would, among other things, reduce student debt, put small business first with tax breaks, develop a seniors strategy and repeal Bill C-51. Phil Rose, Liberal Party candidate, compared the campaign to the Toronto Blue Jays playoff run. Saying the Blue Jays, like the federal government, had become “stagnant and disinterested”,

he said the owners invested and it is now “paying off”. He said voters can do the same. “The Liberal Party wants to invest in our teams, by which I mean our municipalities.” The New Democratic Party’s Nameer Rahman told the crowd, “This is not your grandfather’s NDP. Jobs, at the end

of the day, create stable families. Stable families build dynamic communities and dynamic communities are the bedrock of a great nation.” Conservative Party incumbent Dean Allison said the track record of his government, as well as his own locally, have set a course for a solid future. Elaine Douglas of Grimsby got a “saucy” surprise while she attended her knitting group event on Monday night. “I started getting all these notices from people congratulating me,” said Douglas. They were congratulating her on winning $10,000 in sauces from Marinelli’s, a Hamiltonbased sauce company. The company ran an online promotion seeking writers to submit compositions supporting local food banks. Online readers voted, and Grimsby Benevolent Fund was the ultimate winner of $10,000 in sauces.

“Surprise” power line location has detrimental effect: consultant By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The consultant for a residential developer has been left scratching his head after finding out a power transmission line will be extended over his proposed West Lincoln development. Steve Megannety said he was shocked to find out last week the chosen route for the power transmission line for the wind turbine project will go over a 300home development he has been working on for seven years, and a school yard for a proposed new Catholic elementary school. “Essentially I have two weeks to rally

for change,” said Megannety, who said he found out when developer Boralex reached out to bring him up to date on the power line’s construction. “I don’t know how this could happen with nobody knowing. I called the Region and Township. The mayor (Doug Joyner) told me, ‘this is not where it is going’.” The township and Niagara Region’s commission of public works, Ron Tripp, also – as of late last week – believed the power line had been rerouted to one of the other two altermative routes suggested in an initial study. Quoting a study

conducted by Lansink Appraisals and Consulting 2010, Magennety said, if the line remains where it is now purported to go, it could mean as much as a 58 per cent reduction in ultimate real estate sales values. “It’s devastating,” said Megannety. In an email, West Lincoln Mayor Doug Joyner said the issue has been “a bit of a moving target very, very, high level Provincial conversations,” adding Megannety is a “government lobbyist” who “knows what the Township knows and he continues to have open dialogue with the IWT owners.”

The overarching principles of all GFD programming focuses on the preservation of the volunteer fire service delivery model. Volunteer service delivery saves the municipally millions of dollars annually as compared to a similar compliment of career firefighters. But how does fire prevention programming serve as support to the volunteer model? The success of a volunteer model relies on volunteer firefighters leaving their places of work, their families and other events to attend an emergency call. High call volumes compromise

the ability of a volunteer to commit to attend. In fact, call volumes are traditionally the most prevalent cause for the collapse of a volunteer system. Increased density, changing building stock and the over 65 years of age growing demographic will continue to be an increasing challenge for fire safety in the community. To address this, for the past several years GFD has been committed to shifting the paradigm by reversing traditional priorities of fire protection, placing greater emphasis on fire prevention programming that is balanced between public fire safety education and inspection programs. With modern building materials and open concept homes, today’s fires grow more quickly based

on the synthetic materials in furniture and the structure itself creating a toxic chemical by-product that is deadly. This smoke spreads unimpeded throughout to open concept homes, giving you only minutes to react. Having working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms on every floor level is your only chance. During Fire Prevention Week we ask that you make a conscious effort towards your own fire

safety, including checking smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms and identifying and removing fire safety hazards in your home. In the same amount of time it takes you to sort your garbage into various recycling programs, you can make your home more fire safe! This article would not be complete if it did not identify what GFD is doing to ensure that emergency response capacities are

maintained and enhanced during these changing times. Beyond increasing the compliment of fire fighters, one of the most significant accomplishments over the past couple years has been the implementation of standardized working agreements with Lincoln and West Lincoln Fire Departments. The overarching principle of the initiative is the preservation of volunteer fire service delivery in

By Ron Martin (First President of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce – 1985/86 In 1984, I was sitting in my office and reading the paper and read that Beamsville businessmen got some funds from the Town of Lincoln. I thought to myself, Vineland and Jordan never get anything. The clerk at the

Town told me that in order to qualify for funds we would have to first need to form an organization. I decided to see how other business people felt about the idea so I went door to door and talked to other business people in Vineland and Jordan and told them if they are interested to come to

the basement at the Jordan Hotel on a particular date and time. I thought probably only a few would show up but to my surprise, we had about 12 or 13 who were there and very interested in forming an association of some type. We decided to meet monthly and Colleen See 30th, Page 19

From Page 18 from the Jordan Hotel offered to donate the room free of charge. As a group we had to decide whether we wanted a business association or some other like group. I invited a man from Grimsby who was associated with the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce plus other organizations to come and speak to us and give us some ideas. The majority liked the idea of Chamber of Commerce and one reason was because of the Group Insurance Plan that was available. We formed an executive and then had to decide what to call ourselves. Do we go with Vineland and Jordan or do we take in all of Lincoln. We decided to go with Lincoln Chamber of Commerce with

the thought that this might help to bring east end business and west end business together. As the word got around, we gained new members. One of our members, Al Teather from the St. Catharines Standard and the Lincoln Post Express was instrumental in helping with our advertising. The Chamber would buy a full page and each member would buy his add on that page and we all split the costs. We ran a contest in the paper inviting people to make up a logo for us. I invited several speakers to meetings such as Niagara Regional Business Development Corp., a speaker from CrimeStoppers and from other Chambers. The President of the Chamber in Fort Erie was a lawyer and he offered to help with our Carter and get

us registered at little cost. One of our first projects was the Christmas Lights that go up on the street through the Town of Lincoln. At the end of the year we had 35 members. We also got involved in the Community Care Food & Toy Drive at Christmas time. The Chamber opened their first office in my store in 1988 and hired a part time secretary. There were a few other locations but we finally moved to the present location in 1989 or 90. At the end of our 10 years we had approximately 110 members. Thanks to you, the members, the LINCOLN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE is still strong and successful. (Editor’s Note: 30 years on, the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce now has has 220 members).

Shoreline about to change The shoreline of Lake Ontario is going to be taking on a decidedly different look in the immediate future. Several major tracts of land have been “parked” waiting for the market to be ripe and it appears as though that time has arrived. Several major deals have been rumoured just in the last week, this on the heels of the major deal for the land where Fifth Wheel Truck Stop was located. In the last week, 2-3 major deals have nudged into the final stages, if not completed, and when calls and/or emails get returned you will read that information in NewsNow. But suffice to say, the landscape is about to change dramatically, again. It is inevitable and market hot. This growth will also move along the Town of Grimsby’s shoreline project, which will be great for the town as well. M.W.

Will voters stick with “devil” they know I’ve held off wading into the federal election campaign until now as the date seemed far away until now. Oct. 19 will be here soon enough. It has been a fairly unremarkable campaign overall. There is an ebb and flow to polls as always. The NDP were riding high early on, which seems to be a pattern of message-sending on the part of the Canadian public...”You’d better shape up, or we’re going NDP”. That message has been served up to both the Conservatives and Liberals over the years, and one year the country is going to go Bob Rae on their behinds and shock everyone. I don’t think this is that election, however. One thing that stood out to me, annoyed me actually, was the Tories’ “he’s not ready” campaign against Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. The man is 43, raised in politics, obviously, has been around the block, as they say. The same rhetoric surfaced when Tory leader Stephen Harper came a calling the first time but it was “does he look prime ministerial?” as the spin. It is unfortunate, but true, that negative campaigning works. In the end following past “traditions” of campaign planning win the day. People aren’t really that hard to figure out when it comes to what motivates them to vote. Trudeau is ready. That is

MIKE WILLISCRAFT not even a remote consideration. The questions, as it should be, are directly tied to party philosophy and which direction the voter believes the country should venture next. All three leading parties have clearly laid out their platforms, it is a matter of choosing one. With party leaders, yes, their personality does carry weight with voters but matters little when it comes to the ultimate direction of their parties. Each party has its core philosophy and, along that line, there is a host of advisors, usually behind the scenes, who develop the ultimate direction of legislation and policy, as well as penning the public persona of the top dogs. You think Stephen Harper developed a personality at some point, if you think he did at all? No, he got better writers. Trudeau, love or hate his family lineage, speaks with the same passion his two-time prime minister father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau. If anyone is going to connect with the “young” voter it will be the Liberal

leader. Harper, for all his experience, is still as stiff as a piece of B.C. shoreline driftwood. NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has made a good showing and done well in debates. Trudeau did as well, or the “he’s not ready” sentiment would have picked up speed. That dog simply does not hunt. Looking locally, I had the opportunity as Lincoln Chamber of Commerce president, to moderate the Niagara West Riding candidate debate at the Lincoln Centre in Beamsville on Tuesday night. Well over 200 people packed the room to hear the five candidates outline their party’s platform and provide some personal comment on a host of issues. All made a solid account of themselves. Being on the stage, it was interesting to note that political campaign veteran Sid Frere of the Green Party the most “senior” candidate by a considerable margin, was the most “advanced” as he stealthily referenced through a tablet on the table in front of him for talking points, while the other candidates had folders in front of them. Monday’s polls showed the Tories and Liberals neck and neck. That showing plays in the Tories favour in the end as Canadians tend to gravitate to what they know, in this case the Tories, but if the change wave comes, it will be red....just my two cents.
