Foundation of Resources for Teens (FORT) opened its new Smithville home last Thursday. The new facility at 116 West St., behind Smithville United Church, opens the doors to many new programs. “One of our most popular programs is teaching students how to cook, and before the

new location we were limited to what could be made in a toaster oven. The new location has a full kitchenette that lets us create some truly wonderful treats!” said executive director Beth Shaw. The centre, which also has hispeed wifi, will be open Monday-Friday from 3-9 p.m.

West Niagara high schools may close, super school to open 2020 Low enrolment and daunting capital investments at Niagara West’s three public high schools may lead to their demise. A District School Board of Niagara staff report, approved at the board’s meeting last Tuesday , Sept. 27, puts Grimsby Secondary School, Beamsville District Secondary School and South Lincoln High School into an accommodation review. There will be an opportunity for public input on this process starting Thursday, Nov. 3, followed by Nov. 10, Dec. 15 and Jan. 26. With enrolment having declined, according to DSBN numbers, by 28 per cent in the last five years (607 students) and capital invest-

ment needed - BDSS $26 million; GSS $19 million and SLHS $7 million - board officials say their best move is to amalgamate them. “This is the beginning of a thorough process to examine secondary education in West Niagara. Public feedback will be an integral part of the review and Trustees will make a decision in the best interest of students,” said Warren Hoshizaki, DSBN director of education, in a press release. According to the option proposed by staff, SLHS would close as of June 30, 2017. Students would be redirected according to their location and program. The Board would then begin the process of locating a property and building a new high

school for students in the area. BDSS and GSS would close on June 30, 2020, with the new school opening its doors in September, 2020. Communication officers Brett Sweeney denied reports last week that the school board had already purchased property near the corner of Hwy. 8 and Durham Road. “Sounds a lot like the Lincoln County fair board selling off the valuable in-town real estate to buy cheaper land in the country and start fresh with a big box school,” said BDSS alumni John Allan, who has helped organize BDSS reunions in the past. “I wonder what we will get first, a new school or new hospital?”

Are you ready to “think outside the bank”? What is INTEREST RATE DIFFERENTIAL? Interest Rate Differential (IRD) refers to a calculation used by banks and other mortgage lenders to determine the cost of breaking a fixed-rate mortgage, should the borrower decide to pay the mortgage off prior to the contract maturity date. Aggressively-priced mortgage rates, with higher-than-usual penalty calculations, have become very popular in the marketplace. You need to understand their IRD calculation, otherwise, what seemed like a really good interest rate at the time, will turn into a very costly error in judgment. Canada’s 150th gets rolling

Seven projects in Niagara have received grants totaling $60,000 to deliver programs that will bring the community together to honour the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. Kamphuis takes on new role After 14 years in leadership at Covenant Christian School in Smithville and John Knox Christian School in Stoney Creek, West Lincoln resident Tony Kamphuis is taking on the role of president and CEO of the Christian School Foundation. GRIFFIN STREET NORTH-PHASE 1 STREETSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS Council adopted a recommendation to enter into an agreement with Stevensville Lawn Service Inc. for the Griffin Street North Streetscape Phase 1 project, in the amount of $266,960.00 provided Regional Funding is approved. As part of the Streetscape Master Plan and the Building a Vibrant Tomorrow plan, Public Works circulated a RFP for streetscape improvements on Griffin Street North from McMurchie Lane to 185 Griffin Street North (The Royal Bank building). The streetscape will include, but not be limited to: decorative street lighting, new sidewalks and interlock pavers, benches, garbage receptacles and trees. The works are scheduled to commence early October, 2016. Notices will be distributed to affected local businesses prior to commencement.

Dishke named to NRHA David Dishke, president of Grimsby Home Hardware and Grand River Home Hardware in Caledonia was recently elected to the board of the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA). Dishke’s family started the Grand River business over 45 years ago, and he started working for the hardware store in 1986 at the age of 15. In 1996, he became the manager and part owner of the business, and in 2004, he received NRHA’s Young Retailer of the Year award. Today, Dishke owns the business with his wife Deanna. In the winter of 2014, Dishke bought Grimsby Home Hardware, closing the shop for many months to remodel and reopened in early summer 2015. Over the years, his Grand River business has changed as well. In 2007, the store went

through a remodel, doubling retail space from 9,000 sq. ft. to over 20,000. Dishke strives to grow as a retailer and continues to improve his business. He frequently utilizes educational resources provided by NRHA and attends special events. He requires all of his employees to complete NRHA online training courses in areas like product knowledge and customer service. Dishke has remained connected to the industry by attending many NRHA Conferences since 2004, as well as attending every Home Hardware Buying Market since the fall of 1984. NRHA provides a wealth of online training and educational resources to thousands of retailers on www.nrha.org.

WL reboots rec facility process The long-awaited ball finally gets rolling for the Twp. of West Lincoln, its council and taxpayers, for the much-debated multi-use recreational facility. This is the second time around the block for this proposal after everything went off the rails its first time through the gauntlet. The history will not be relived here, but it will be worth remembering at election time. Monday, Oct. 17 will mark the presentation of the new direction for the project. It will come as part of Public Works/Recreation/Arena Committee meeting. There will be opportunities for public input throughout, including meetings Nov. 14, Nov. 16 and Dec. 5. All residents of the township should make a point to familiarize themselves with the proposal and state their likes and dislikes. It will be a major undertaking and something truly great for the township for decades to come so get involved. M.W.

High schools in sights of DSBN News that Grimsby Secondary School, Beamsville District Secondary School and South Lincoln High School are on the school board’s chopping block is THE least surprising story I’ve heard in 20-plus years in this area. The writing was on the wall years ago, or was it taken down like much of the history which used to decorate the walls of GSS before it was removed. This is one of those things I get old and grumpy about. The pattern of dismantling among the high schools in this area started years go. It is virtually identical to the long-term plan put in place which lead to the mothballing of Niagara District Secondary School in Niagara-on-The-Lake in 2010. Those at the school saw a physical break down of the facility over a long period as repairs and maintenance were left wanting. Program and extra-curricular reductions caused a steady flow of students from NOTL to opt for bussing into St. Catharines or Niagara Falls so they could access courses and activities which fulfilled their needs. Sound familiar? Generally, and longer term residents of the community will recall this, it is not unlike the whittling away of students from Park and Grand Avenue elementary schools in Grimsby. Nelles School was overflowing with portables to accommodate its population while other neighbouring schools had steadily depleting numbers. Changes in the boundary which determined where students were to go was, in large part, what

MIKE WILLISCRAFT was causing the shift in students, but it provided the impetus for the school board to suggest closures. Luckily, a host of local volunteers banded together, were extremely creative in their thinking and we still have those institutions working for taxpayers today. With high schools, it is a bit different. Once the political animal starts to lean in any one direction it is usually pretty much game over. You have to remember, when the school board starts rolling out repair and maintenance numbers such as Beamsville, $26 million; Grimsby, $19 million-plus, and; South Lincoln, $7 million, these numbers have nudged higher by reduced spending over years. The school board has spent money in the school’s to keep them operationally safe, but we’re talking minimums here. NDSS, when it was folded in 2010 had an enrolment of 265, just four students away from where SLHS’s 269 sits. When teachers from GSS started coming to me in recent years and telling me how things were evolving within the school’s walls, I laid out exactly what I thought would happen. Turns out I

was wrong, though. I told them the school closure direction would come next year, so I missed by a year. Getting old I guess! To look at the enrolment and huge costs the board says the facilities need - and I am 100 per cent sure both are accurate - it looks like a no-brainer to shut them all down and go super school. That is why it takes years to get to that point. It really had to be all three to work for the super school formula, too. If SLHS had been folded, say, three years ago and their (rounding down) 250 students were divided between GSS and BDSS, their populations bounce up to about 700 years. If a fraction of the funds NOT spent on repairs and maintenance went into programs and activities for the students maybe kids aren’t getting bussed from Jordan right passed BDSS and GSS to arrive at BTs door. BT is a great facility. They are building an empire there, but they have absolutely no competition right now as the other facilities don’t seem to want incoming students or it would gum up the school board’s plans. As I said, the writing was on the walls years ago, perhaps in invisible ink, but now it is there for all to see and it is most unfortunate. On the face of it, it does look like it makes sense and maybe it does or would have anyways. What I detest is the process of it all which misleads the taxpayers into thinking this was best for all involved. It may be best for the school board, but it is not best for the students or the taxpayers they serve.

HELP WANTED Dear Taxpayer, I have put name forward for the Provincial PC nomination in the Niagara West Glanbrook Riding. While many may think this was a difficult decision, it was not. The size and scope of the issues facing taxpayers combined with the other candidate options made it clear this was something very much needed. Spending well over two decades living, working and volunteering in our community has connected me with every corner of the Riding at one time or another. An opportunity to continue these efforts at the provincial level, to be able to drive change on major issues facing all of us, would be greatly appreciated. To me, the key issues are: • Seeing the long-awaited rebuild of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital come to fruition. LONG OVERDUE! • Effective green energy policies and establishing a tight rein on hydrorelated programs and rates. WE ARE PAYING TOO MUCH! • Getting our local transportation issues solved in an expeditious manner – mountain access & GO/local transit. OUR TRUCK TRAFFIC ISSUE MUST BE SOLVED ASAP! Anyone who knows me, realizes these core issues have been my mantra for years or even decades. They are not campaign pledges to gain votes. I am no politician. You know me as a community partner who will do whatever is needed whenever it is needed to make our community a better place and that is my sole motivation now in seeking this nomination. To do this, I need your help! I need taxpayers to join what can best be described as a grassroots movement. Not being part of the political machine, a great many residents who have never had a thing to do with politics have come forward already and that is greatly appreciated. What I need is taxpayers to obtain a $10 membership in the PC riding association AND come out Saturday, Nov. 5 and vote at the nomination meeting (time and location still TBA).
