CO alarm law now in effect
It’s now the law in Ontario to install carbon monoxide detectors in your home if you have a fuelburning appliance or an attached garage. Effective Oct. 15, 2014, CO detectors must be installed outside all sleeping areas of the home in single family homes and residential buildings with no more than six units. You have until April 15, 2015 to comply. “Carbon monoxide has about the same density as air, so they can be installed on the ceiling like a smoke alarm, other units can be plugged in to an electrical outlet,” said Kevin McIntyre, West Lincoln Fire Dept. deputy chief. Deadly carbon monoxide is produced when fuel such as propane, natural gas, heating oil or wood do not burn completely. “There could be cracks in the heat exchanger, or the appliance isn’t venting correctly,” said

Few upsets in 2014 municipal election Although a number of new candidates across the west end threw their hats into the election ring, there were relatively few shakeups once the 2014 municipal election wrapped up Monday night. The biggest glitch of the evening came when Town of Grimsby results trailed two hours behind the
rest of the Region. “We are still waiting for more of an explanation about what happened there,” said Hazel SoadyEaston, Grimsby clerk. Grimsby voter’s were able to file their choices by phone, online or traditional ballot, but the company managing the election said there

Breakfast Food drive launches this week The Knights of Columbus don’t want any Grimsby child going to school hungry. So they have launched a breakfast food drive. “I was over at the Grimsby Benevolent Fund and they already have lots of empty shelves,” said Joe Cunningham, a member of K of C 4917. “The Knights want to get more involved in the community so we have decided a to do a food drive to help fill the gap between Thanksgiving and Christmas.” Non-perishable food items such as cereals, juice boxes, peanut butter, jam and other spreads and – for the grownups – coffee and tea can be dropped off Saturday, Nov. 15 before the 5 p.m. service at St. Joseph Church at 135 Livingston Ave and Sunday, Nov. 16 between 9-10:30 a.m. also at the church. Food items can also be dropped off at the NewsNow office at 49 Main St. W. Thursday, Oct. 30 to Friday, Nov. 14 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, through Friday.

At West Lincoln Memorial Hospital on Saturday, October 18, 2014, John Finian Cronin (Jack) passed away at the age of 83. Beloved husband for 60 years of Erika Maria Cronin (nee Stieber). Loving father of Peter Cronin (Margaret) and Katherine Cronin (Hamish Wilson). Cherished grandfather of Ron, Erica, Christopher, Brennan and Peter, and great-grandfather of Mikka and Thorsten. Dear brother of Kay Meade (the late Walter) and Maureen Brennan (Joe), and brotherin-law of Anne Cronin. Predeceased by his brother Paul and parents Christopher and Catharine, all of Dublin, Ireland. A former English teacher and department head for many years at South Lincoln High School in Smithville, he will also be remembered by many colleagues and students. Jack served also with the district Teachers Federation, the Retired Teachers of Ontario, and with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation, rising to the position of VicePresident. A memorial gathering to celebrate his life will be held at 25 Kingsway Blvd, Grimsby on Saturday, November 1 from 2-6 pm. Results in, time to press on Well, that was fun. I’m a sucker for local politics so I fully suspect most people will think I am nuts but there were so many interesting ins and outs to the last 30plus days, it simply must generate some reading between the lines. First, congratulations to everyone who gave of their time to run for office. It is not easy running and it’s no picnic winning. They all, believe some or not, have the best interests of their respective communities at heart so their efforts should be appreciated. As before, let’s roll through each municipality and this time West Lincoln is first up. Doug Joyner was the victor in West Lincoln, as was Bob Bentley in Grimsby. My sentiment: you have to knock out the champ and challengers, in the voters’ eyes, just did not do that. Joyner, in his comments to me post-election sees his 1,500 votes as a mandate to drive on with the new multi-use recreation facility (which everyone will call the new “arena” anyways). He was right to repeatedly point out at the all-candidates meeting that it was not just an arena. Hockey is so engrained in the Canadian psyche, though, he is wasting his time with the multi-use thing. It should be, and I hope would be, more than that to the people of West Lincoln. He was also right in offering, “If you grow it (the population), commercial interests will come.” The only issue there is scores of people I have talked to in Smithville in the last month are all scratching their heads over the Tim Hortons mov-
MIKE WILLISCRAFT ing into the mall and the new Foodland will open there, too, as the current grocery store will close. Lots of stories about parking chaos already emanating from consumers. Can’t imagine how it will go when the grocery store is open as well. Four new councillors on the West Lincoln crew. Getting everyone up to speed and moving forward will take some time. Lincoln: there is considerable division with the new council, mainly between the new mayor Sandra Easton and council members. Easton has next to no use for how council has been handling itself of late going so far as to say some of their comments during meetings have been “immature” and “foolish”. Her goal is to change the way the council and administration handles itself. Period. Not to speak for any member of the past council, they don’t agree and believe the atmosphere of cooperation and professionalism have been second to none. Converging viewpoints to be sure. In the end, any council needs to work together to achieve anything, so it will be interesting to see how
this bumpy start effects long-term progress. Grimsby: Bentley rules the day, again. Runner up Wayne Fertich ran about as good a campaign as one could and generated an impressive 3,000-plus votes. Problem was, the two other candidates in the race got a combined 1,200 votes, enough to create the 1,000-vote gap by which he lost.
