Study, upgrades both needed By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The next phase of Hamilton Health Sciences’ “Our Healthy Future” process may be delayed until after the new year, but other key changes at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital are rolling out as planned, say hospital officials. “We will be sharing what we saw and heard in the initial round of publc meetings said Aaron Levo, HamiltonHealth Sciences vice-president, communications, adding

While that percolates, WLMH president Rebecca Repa said HHSC is moving ahead with investments on several fronts to continue an attempt to improve the aging facility. A $5.4 million capital expenditure is in the tender process. “It is not exciting in terms of high profile items but it is important infrastructure like electrical and plumbing work
getting done: very necessary work,” said Repa. Part of the work will be a $1 million component to improve technology improving wireless conectivity, among other things. Other items will include: • $250,000 to be spent on the emergency department; • two new ultrasound units have been added, with the help of WLM Auxiiary, Repa noted, to allow expansion of service to weekends and

Rotary Club of Grimsby hosts info night Nov. 5 The Grimsby Rotary Club is part of the worldwide organization of Rotary Clubs whose motto is “service above self”. Its focus is to attract members who are interested in community service for the benefit of both local and international projects. During recent discussions with district governor Kevin Crosby, the emphasis for the group’s membership is more on community involvement through understanding the objectives of Rotary and less on regular attendance at meetings.
To that end, the Grimsby club meets only twice monthly on the first and third Thursday at 6 pm at the Casablanca Winery Inn for a dinner meeting, fellowship, information exchange and a few laughs. “We are involved in various annual community projects, the next being the “Fantasy of Trees” where an exhibition of sponsored decorated Christmas trees and wreaths are displayed at the Grimsby Museum for the public to view, and if desired, to purchase tickets to

Shipwrecks: Stolt Viking gutted by flames in Dubai By Skip Gilham There have been 35 different Stolt-named tankers come through the Seaway since the waterway opened in 1959. This was the same year that Jacob Stolt-Neilsen
founded his company. The Stolt ships, both owned and chartered, have traded all over the world and under several banners including Parcel Tankers Inc., Stolt Tankers and Stolt-Neilsen Ltd.
Stolt Viking, one of three “Stolt” names carried by this vessel, was an occasional trader to the inland lakes. It had been built at Newcastle, Eng., and completed in March 1962 as Abadesa.

Signs your insulation is not working well Some insulations can lose performance over time, sustain damage or simply no longer meet updated building codes. It’s an issue that can be costly, because if your home’s insulation isn’t doing its job, you could be wasting money and resources. Ab was also the proud Uncle of many nieces & nephews in PEI, Southern Ontario and the United States. Dad was known for his tremendous work ethic with Firestone for 38 years, but more importantly in community youth activities. WLMH improvements needed The administration for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital has been in a bit of a pickle regarding the physical plant for many years, nearly a decade in fact. Everyone in the community held its breath for a long time for news of a pending provincial light bulb to go on, accompanied by the announcement of funding for a new hospital to be built in Grimsby. Will that ever happen? Who knows? But in the mean time, administrations past and present have been careful not to invest in capital aspects of the building in the event provincial money finally came through. Hamilton Health Sciences is working on a longterm plan for the future, as noted in today’s frontpage piece, but they are also spending millions to get things in better shape. And not a moment too soon. Hopefully it’s just a Band-Aid to get the communty to what it really needs – a new facility. M.W.
Never know who lurks around a corner I was a bit of an oddity as a child, hard to believe, I know. While my friends were into Led Zeppelin, The Stones, Black Sabbath etc, I was a Beatles guy. I never met one of them, but came close one time and found myself telling this story to my daughter recently...I had forgotten all about it.... In came a fellow scurrying about, dodging between aisles, picking up and grabbing items, returning them to the shelves, all before darting to the cash register at The Beatles’ Love show gift shop inside Las Vegas’ Mirage Hotel. Frantic? Oh ya. I wrote it off to a tourist who promised a Beatles fan in his family a gift and he had a plane waiting. Not being much of a browser (not at all actually) I took a look around the shop for a few minutes and coasted out into the hall area. A look to the left... hmmm, roulette. Nope, I was waiting to head out on another adventure, so didn’t want to get into anything. A look to the right and there was a small commotion of people, about a dozen, hovering around the huge Love logo affixed to the entranceway to the theatre. After a minute or so, I noticed a photographer who positioned herself about six inches from her two subjects faces and her flash started twinkling. Few people, even serious photographers have such a lens, a super-wide angle sort, so I knew something was up. A couple steps to my
MIKE WILLISCRAFT right and I saw right away what the fuss was about. There stood Sir George Martin, the glue which held The Beatles together. From the time I knew what music was, I was a Beatles fan. I could not even guess how many times I played the 45 with Hey Jude and Revolution in my basement....a zillion? I could not guess. Next thing I knew, I was that guy in the Love souvenir shop, darting, dodging, looking for something to get autographed. That is why the other guy was frenetic. I grabbed a Love program, waited impatiently, and scooted out the door to work my way over to the gathering. Within minutes, the photoshoot with George (I can call him George since we are buddies now) and his son Giles wrapped up. Giles produced the Love show soundtrack and George popped in to pay him a visit. The apple (get it, apple...Apple records) doesn’t fall far from the tree with Giles having won two Grammys, including one in 2007 for the Love soundtrack album, as a
producer of the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. As the group broke up, I worked my way over to George and started by saying, “You gave my mother a heart attack back in the 70s”. I expected and received a rather perplexed look. I was prepared with an explanation that my mother was a little worried, but really she thought she was getting off pretty easy, with my love of The Beatles. With all those long-haired, nasty rock ‘n’ rollers out there, it could have been a lot worse in late 70s. Anyways, I drew a smile from one of the most respected people in the history of pop music and that was all I really wanted. I thought he must have had a million questions and autograph seekers over the years, I just wanted to be a bit different. My only real question regarded his skill in mastering The White Album, when the group was on the outs and would not set foot in studio with other band members. He juggled all the instrumental tracks and voice tracks into a musical masterpiece. His reply: a recalling nod, a bit of a snort, and “It was not easy. It took a lot of time and patience.” “But I think it was worth it in the end, don’t you?” Mmmmm, let me think about that, George..... With that, he signed away. We shook hands, parted best friends, and the rest is history.

Biodigester good money after bad: reader Dear Editor, Mayor Bob in his finite wisdom, wants to unveil the unproven Bio-Digester, which will consume all sorts of biomass, including animal feces, and thus a creating a local bio-hazard. His project is unprincipled, mis-leading and has become a significant liability to the taxpayer. Bob has always had grandiose ideas on unnecessary power projects. Five years ago, the mayor pushed for the installation of a $1.2 million gas plant, aka FP1, to be located beside town hall, similar in design to the highly controversial Oakville gas plant. FP1 has yet to start up. This is the measure of competency of the town building power plant projects. Now Bob has pushed the Town to backstop
Letter a $4.5 million loan to a private company that is building a large biodigester, FP2. This private company, has no assets, nor any income, and could NOT get a bank loan unless the Town co-signed. Has your private business got the Town to co-sign your bank loans, and for the entire amount? So, why did the Town do that? Only the mayor knows and I believe he has muzzled his council from answering. The FP2 Power Plant project is unprincipled for several reasons. The mayor claims it will make a bit of money. The mayor is hiding the business plan from the taxpayers who are liable for its $4.5 mil-

This plant will receive 16 cents for its power from the Ontario government, but the Ontario power consumer (and taxpayer) only pays 12 cents ... there is only one Ontario taxpayer to pay the difference; FP2 is designed such that it will lose money right from the start; lastly, Bob says its carbon neutral since all the bio-mass was going to naturally decay anyway. The Mayor conveniently forgets two things: all the diesel powered tractors and trucks gathering up and disposing of up to 60 tons of material a day from across the region and the creation and combustion of the methane gas, which produces carcinogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Halloween is a time for people young and old to enjoy a little mischief and mayhem. To make the holiday even more enjoyable, celebrants can heed a few tips to make Halloween as safe as it is pleasurable. 1. Use face paints instead of masks that obscure vision. 2. Wear reflective tape on costumes of dark colors for trick-or-treating at night. 3. LED lights or glow sticks are a safer alternative to lit candles. Some lights even flicker to offer the appeal of candles. 4. Trick-or-treat in a group; never alone. 5. Take a planned route and don’t wander off the path. 6. Be sure costumes are not tripping hazards. 7. Costume on young children should be ageappropriate and free of hazards, such as strings that can strangle or small parts that can choke. 8. Stick to trick-or-treating in trusted neighborhoods. 9. Be extra-cautious of cars when walking at night.
