rest of the country was in awe. “It really turned out to be a referendum on Stephen Harper,” said Allison late Monday night after making his acceptance speech at The Butcher and Banker Pub in Beamsville.

“We did a lot of good things. We held the line on taxes, we kept the economy going through a very difficult time, we made tough decisions. That’s all gone now. People will be in for a big surprise if the Liberals do what

they said they were going to do.” “For me, I heard it at the door. ‘Dean, we like you. You worked hard, did a good job. We just don’t like your boss’.” The record long federal campaign had a lot of ebb and

flow to it, with little serious movement until after Labour Day. One thing Allison agreed with was the strategy to pound the public with the “he’s not ready” campaign for so long was a mistake. See VOTE, Page 2

Smithville Arena. “There has been nothing done there in years.” Monday night a projected budget of $14 million was set and a target of $3.6 million was set for local fundraising. “It could be five years, it could be two years, but we will put a shovel in the ground when we reach that $3.6 million goal,” said Bell, noting council talked about a $200,000 annual reserve to be set aside for five years to come up with another $1 million. He noted $200,000 represents a four per cent tax increase, adding, while council has not discussed it, residents have suggested a short-term (10-year) tax increase as a way to generate that reserve money. “This needs to happen and we all want it for different reasons, but we have to fiscally responsible,” said Bell. He noted a fundraising coach will be hired to steer that process.

A construction start may be years away, but West Lincoln has established some footing on which to build toward a goal of a new recreation complex. At its Public Works/Recreation Committee meeting Monday night, a framework for budget, fundraising structure and reserves to be created were all part of the discussion. Coun. Terry Bell said the current council has a lot with which to deal, citing putting money into the current arena will be assessed so its life can be extended to match up with when funds have been put in place to cover the cost of any new project. “We understand it could be in the $1.2-$1.5 million range to get the old arena in good standing, but we are getting accurate numbers on that first,” said Bell, noting that a major issue there was the unwillingness of previous councils to invest anything in the

Auxiliary hosts annual show Saturday at LAC West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary will host its annual craft show this Saturday at Livingston Activity Centre. The event runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. “West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary has jumped from just completing the purchase of two ultrasound machines into another pledge to purchase pulmonary/echocardiogram medical equipment at a cost of $210,000,” said president Marlene Morais. There will be plenty of vendors providing a good variety of interesting crafts, she added. “This is a volunteer association and every dollar raised is used toward the purchase of medical equipment for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital,” said Morais. “Medical equipment is not

Riverboat Cruise. WLCC chair Steve Witt said the evening – held at Covenant Christian School – went off without a hitch. The event included a full dinner, live entertainment and a silent auction. “It is always a great event and this year was no differ-

Flinterstar sunk after recent collision By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The Dutch ship Flinterstar, a Seaway trader since 2002, sank following a collision off Zeebrugge, Belgium, on Oct. 6, 2015. This vessel, and the Liquid Natural Gas tanker Al Oraiq, came together at about 4 a.m. and the latter sustained bow damage. An inquiry will determine who was to blame. The 129.4 metre long Flinterstar, part of Flinter Groningen B.V. of Holland, was heavily damaged and settled on the bottom on a sandbar. The foredeck is out of the water at low tide and the ship is listing to the starboard side. All on board the vessel were rescued although one required hospitalization for hypothermia. While it appears that Flinterstar is salvage-

It was upbound in the Seaway for the first time on Nov. 30, 2002, and was delivering a cargo of steel for Hamilton. It then sailed to Thunder Bay to take on a load of flax. The ship was last on the Great Lakes in Nov. 2014 travelling to Chicago to unload and then to Thunder Bay for its next cargo.

West Lincoln on right path, finally Monday night was a significant night in West Lincoln as well as the nation. On West Lincoln’s plate was the proposed future of a new recreation facility for the municipality. The project was the subject of tumultuous debate back in the spring with the bizarre scene playing out with Mayor Doug Joyner putting forth a multi-part motion which nobody on council would second in order to get it on the table for discussion. It was agreed to restart the project’s engine, going back almost to the start but host another public meeting, establish an inventory of need and bring forward a solid plan. Whether it gets done is another debate, but Monday, the plan started to take shape, complete with a fundraising goal for the community of $3.6 million set - lofty, but needed if the whole thing will fly. A review of the current arena will be done. Money will be spent to prolong its life - something previous councils should have paid attention to - and time will be bought to get things done right. That is a good plan.

Surfing the red wave across Canada The political door will not be hitting Mr. Harper as he exits to make room for Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau. Last week everyone was asking, “What do you think will happen?” This week, it’s, “Did you see that coming?” Short answer, yes, but not to the extent by which things rolled out. In my column two weeks ago I outlined the familiar pattern of the pseudo-fear voters attempt to instill in any government. Going back a month or six weeks, it looked like even the NDP had a realistic shot at power. Then the tide turned as judgment day neared and the Liberals were on the move. Canada’s election night was over like the 2014 Super Bowl when Seattle crushed the Denver Broncos before many fans had had a chance to stuff their first handful of popcorn in their respective faces. The sea of red in Atlantic Canada not just set the tone for the night but booted Stephen Harper out the door, showed Jack Layton was the NDP surge in the last election and even kept the Bloc boneheads from gaining party status. I’d say that’s a solid showing, you? Simply, I do not believe there was ever any sense that Canadian voters, given a sober state of mind, would ever vote for Trudeau in significant enough numbers to be a real threat. Rule #1 of any battle strategy, never underestimate your enemy.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Strike One. Canadians have never liked dirty politics. It’s just not our style. The entire “He’s just not ready” campaign planner should be dispatched to the Yukon, posthaste. It never did play well and never would. For those who had fringe interest in issues and the election as a whole, Trudeau’s flare and style (sound familiar to anyone over 50?) was undeniable. To anyone who might consider themselves knowledgeable in the political realm – what the issues are and how things get done – they would know that party leaders are not much more than sales people. Strike Two. The party has a battery of “experts” in all areas – economics, foreign affairs, PR – who determine policy and ultimate direction. Would Trudeau have had input on policy and direction, absolutely, but he did not get to be party leader without and getting a team to achieve a common goal while also keeping their collective eye on the ball is the mark

of a true leader. We will see if that happens in this round of Trudeaumania. So targeting Justin as opposed to sticking to policy topics was wrong. Strike Three. See ya. And make no mistake, this is Trudeaumania Part Deux. After I got home from Dean Allison’s reception about midnight on Monday, I watched CBC until they gave up around 1 or 1:30. One pundit said this round of Trudeaumania significantly surpasses the original since Justin took a party nearly obliterated from existence to one of the most dominant wins since his father Pierre swept to power in 1968. Tories will be shaking their collective heads for a while, worried about the projected deficit spending plan the Liberals sold in the election run, among other things. Love him or hate him, just like the old man, things are going to be interesting around here. Locally, little changed. Allison won handily with an overall voter share within a couple of points of his average in previous runs. Liberal Phil Rose had a good showing and his numbers reflected results across the country as Liberal gains were drawn almost solely from the NDP. It is odd, though, that the same people who sat back in awe that Premier Kathleen Wynne was reelected after all the provincial Liberal bungling are surprised at the feds’ strong showing. That should have been a huge red flag.
