Biggest Hat Trick Hockey ever launched For 20 years Hat Trick Hockey has been part of the West Niagara landscape and this year marks a first, and the return of something just plain cool. “We have nine sponsors, with a couple more who may be added and that is bigger than it has ever been prize-wise,” said NewsNow publisher Mike Williscraft. “Getting to nine is a first. A major overhaul for Vineland’s downtown core took another step toward a groundbreaking after a public meeting Tuesday night to review the latest plans. Coun. Dave Thompson said there were a lot of positives that came from the session, hosted by Niagara Region officials who are driving the process. “The Region has done a good job of working with council and its community improvement plan guidelines,” said Thompson. Engine issue spells end for Grenanger By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The Norwegian freighter Grenanger was originally one of the C-1 class of cargo ships built for the United States Maritime Commission during World War Two. They were the smallest of the “C” line of vessels and were intended to be efficient and economical on routes that did not require fast ships. The 125.65m long Grenanger was built at Beaumont, Texas, as Cape Falcon and equipped with two Nordberg oil engines. It could carry in the range of 8,000 tons of cargo. Cape Falcon survived the war and was sold to Westfal-Larsen for Norwegian flag service as

Ontario Street mishap
The intersection at Ontario Street and King Street in Beamsville was closed much of Sunday after an early morning accident. The vehicle pictured stopped in the crosswalk struck a 57-year-old pedestrian who suffered life-threatening injuries. The 41-year-old femaie driver, also of Beamsville, told police the bright sun blinded her. The police investigation continues. Charges are pending.

Dying to get into cemetery tour? The Grimsby Museum is offering a different way to learn some Grimsby history - cemetery tours at Queens Lawn Cemetery. Hear the stories of tragic accident victims as told by volunteer costumed actors. A message from the Fire Chief The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep - Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm”. Fire statistics show that half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Only one in five home fires were reported during these hours. One quarter of home fire deaths were caused by fires that started in the bedroom. Therefore, Lincoln firefighters recommend that in addition to having smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas as required by law, that residents install a smoke alarm in each bedroom as an extra measure of safety.

The 98 volunteer firefighters of Lincoln Fire Rescue and Emergency Services responded to a total of 805 calls in 2014, which included fires, motor vehicle collisions, rescues, medical responses, and a wide variety of other emergencies and calls for assistance. We are currently seeking men and women who have an interest in serving their community, a willingness to learn and are available to commit the time to face the challenges and exciting experiences as part of our team. We especially need people who are available to respond during the day throughout the work week. Although relevant experience is helpful, it is not a requirement. We

Lincoln looks to bolster crew by adding recruits It did not take long for new Lincoln Fire recruits Adam Dunn and Brock Sipos to realize they made the right choice. The duo, working out of the Campden and Jordan firehalls respectively, knew almost immediately their decision for join the department was a good one. “I didn’t have a good appreciation for the level and quality of training the guys go through, but that sure changed,” says Dunn. “They did tell us going in, but it is intense and impressive.” Sipos, who says he had no expectation going into it, even

Get CO alarms in place: Chief Fisher While next week is Fire Prevention Week, West Lincoln Fire Chief Dennis Fisher wants residents to be thinking about CO2 alarms. CO Awareness Week runs from Nov. 1-7, and Chief Fisher reminds all to install carbon monoxide alarms in their homes if they have fuelburning appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage. “The law requires that you have a working CO alarm adjacent to each sleeping area of the home if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an at-
tached garage,” said Chief Fisher. “For added protection, install a carbon monoxide alarm on every storey of the home according to manufacturer’s instructions.” Fuel-burning appliances can include furnaces, hot water heaters, gas or wood fireplaces, portable fuel-burning heaters and generators, barbeques, stoves and vehicles. In condo or apartment buildings that have a garage, CO alarms must be installed adjacent to each sleeping area of all homes above, below and beside the garage. “In Ontario, more than 80 per cent of injuries and deaths from CO occur in the home,” said Chief Fisher. “We want to make sure everyone is safe from CO. Install CO alarms, and do everything you can to prevent CO in your home in the first place.” CO is known as the silent killer because it is an invisible, tasteless and odourless gas.

Homemade salsa warms the tummy HOT SALSA Cooking with (reduce amount of Nancy hot peppers by half for a medium salsa) INGREDIENTS • 1/2lb jalapeno peppers NANCY MORGAN • 8 cups tomatoes, peeled and coarsely peppers, chopped • 1 cup green pepchopped per, chopped • 3 cups banana • 4 cloves garlic, pepper, chopped minced • 2 cup chopped • 1 small can tomato onion paste • 2 cups cider vin• 2 tbsp sugar egar • 1 tsp salt • 1 cup sweet red
• 2 tsp paprika • 1 tsp oregano • 1/4cup fresh cilantro, chopped fine • 3 drops Tabasco sauce (if desired) DIRECTIONS On plastic cutting board using rubber gloves, cut jalapeno peppers in half and remove seeds. Chop fine to make 1 cup. In heavy nonaluminum saucepan, combine hot
peppers, tomatoes, other peppers, onions, vinegar, garlic, tomato paste, sugar, salt, paprika and oregano. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1-1/2 hours. Add cilantro and Tabasco (if using) and cook for five minutes more. Pour into hot, sterilized jars and seal. Makes 11 cups.

Vineland CIP shaping up It was great to hear Niagara Region had been doing some listening when it comes to the Vineland Community Improvement Plan for the King Street/Victoria Avenue area. While there are quite a few raised eyebrows at early design discussions for what may happen in Jordan, most are very happy regional officials have modified - thanks in part to a strong and loud voice from town council - plans. “Plans are looking good,” said Coun. Dave Thompson after Tuesday night’s CIP open house on the Vineland project. Plans now call for parking to remain along King Street near Hopkins IDA and Home Hardware. As well bike lanes will be added to the mix as well as new sidewalks, so a lot of change, but with consideration to long-time community partners, which is great because that does not always happen - downtown Smithville comes to mind. Many have looked forward to seeing this work get started and now that the project is coming into focus, it cannot start fast enough. M.W.
Have fun with Hat Trick Hockey These days, a month seems like a long time ago, let alone 20 years, but it was 20 years ago when I fired up the first Hat Trick Hockey in West Niagara. The result, a whopping 186 entries. I was hoping for 200, so we came up a little shy, but, like clockwork, the hockey pool grew by right about 80 entrants every year and by 2003-2004 we went over 1,000 entries for the first and only time. A key reason, I bit the bullet and anteed up a Stanley Cup final game as the Grand Prize and that assured we would hit quadruple digits. This year, for the hockey pool’s 20th anniversary, we will do that again...the Stanley Cup prize, that is. As for hitting the quad, that is up to you, good readers. Is it worth $5 and a bit of your time to match your skill against the greatest hockey minds in West Niagara? Only you can answer that question. While we’ve been dealing with serious issue after serious issue in this space for months, it is time for a little unadulterated fun. And even if you don’t have a clue who the quarterback is for the Toronto Maple Leafs you, too, can have fun with Hat Trick. The beauty of its design is you can be in 653rd spot in the standing right from Week 1 but if you check the standings each week in the paper you may find you just won a pizza from Pizza Shak or gift certificate from Cole’s Florist. And maybe best of all, bragging rights! If you get some people from your workplace to join in, you can have a side competition which, by
MIKE WILLISCRAFT default, includes bragging rights. We have families who bring in their entries, people from the same hockey team, you name it. I think the bragging rights may be sweeter for some than any prize. And speaking of prizes, I just want to note this contest has had some great sponsors over the years, but only two are still with it as charter members, Cole’s Florist and Teddy’s Fun, Food & Spirits. This whole thing only works because if the sponsors. It was never created to be a money maker, it is simply about some good, old, local fun! So thanks to those two for making it happen. This is year, we have more sponsors for Hat Trick than ever before, nine, and a couple more may be added yet. The pool has never had more than seven, but I think that is just an indication of people recognizing it for what it is, fun. This year we welcome Touchdown Willie’s, Grimsby Tackle and Boo’s Bar and Eatery as brand new sponsors. The tickets I got ended up being at the back of the second section and right in front of the private box occupied by one Michael Eisner, the CEO of Disney, which owns the Ducks. He had the photos to prove it. He also had the photos to prove he enjoyed extensive pre-game festivities with New Jersey Devils cheerleaders at a tailgate party! He had a great time and made some great memories and hopefully that is exactly how it all works out for one of this year’s entrants. So get your entry in by Monday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. to be eligible. Ontario budget problems not solved by pay cuts: reader Dear Editor, The title of the editorial is somewhat misleading as all public sector employees are attacked. Unfortunately, the editorial falls into the trap of attempting to find a simplistic solution to a complex problem. The problem is that many well paying unskilled and semiskilled jobs (mostly in manufacturing) that existed forty years ago have been replaced or are being replaced by jobs that are not far above minimum wage. The conclusion that is drawn is that the money is not there. However, given that the GDP increases every year (around 2% annually in recent years), there is more money in society. The problem then becomes one of income distribution. Forty years ago, top executives made ten to fifteen times the average workers’ wages. An article in the Hamilton Spectator in May of this year reported that, in 2014, top private sector executives made 373 times the average workers’ wages. This is not the case in the public sector. You should be advocating increases in the wages of average workers in the private sector rather than attacking the public sector. If that 373 factor were 10 to 15, then private sector workers would likely be well compensated. Added to this problem is the mistaken impression that private sector wages are static or even decreasing. Another Hamilton Spectator article stated that big companies in Canada had raises of 2.9% in 2011 and 3.2% in 2012 and 2013. It would appear that this is the “harsh economic reality”. Returning to the title of the editorial, let’s examine funding of education and teachers’ salaries. The editor seems to agree that teachers should be compensated fairly. The critical point is most likely the definition of “fair compensation”.
Thanks to the provincial government in the nineties and the elimination of Grade 13 and subsequent governments’ refusal to reinstate it, teachers require five years of university as the bare minimum academic requirement (and beginning this year, six years of university). Most university graduates enter the workforce in their mid-twenties and with significant debt. That, combined with responsibilities and stress of the job, means that they deserve reasonable compensation. You will find that most workers in industry with that level of academic achievement earn higher salaries. The final point is that, if the provincial government can afford to operate four distinct systems of education in the province, it can afford to pay teachers reasonably. Why, in St. Catharines, are there two board of education offices, each containing a director of education, a plethora of superintendents, departments for purchasing, maintenance, etc. and administrative staff? Why are there buses picking up students beside the public school to deliver them to the separate school and other buses picking up students at the separate school to deliver them to the public school? This is the situation in every school district in the province with the English Public School and the English Catholic School systems. I do not know the situation with the French Public School and the French Separate School systems. They may have board offices with directors of education and the attendant operational and administrative personnel. Studies have been done on the impact of having four distinct systems of education, particularly the extra cost of operating those four parallel systems. The studies used the figures supplied by the Ontario Ministry
of Education as well as other sources. The extra cost changes from year to year and varies from a low of 1.3 billion to a high of 3 billion. That is the amount of our tax dollars that would be saved if we had one system of education with French and English sections. That is billion with a “B” and is every year. To quote the editor, the implementation of a single education system would go a

long way towards getting the province’s “fiscal house in order”. It is interesting that the public was very upset when the Liberal party wasted slightly less than 1 billion dollars moving the electric generating plants. That was a “one time” event. Why is the public not upset that the provincial government wastes far more than that every year operating the four education systems? Tom Roden, Grimsby
