Power line should be on different route, say consultants
Takin’ care of business
Members of the 1st Beamsville Scouting and 1st Vineland Scouts did the heavy lifting as part of a shoreline clean-up effort recently.
By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Neither the Township of West Lincoln or the developer of a 300-unit residential project are pleased with news that a power line is projected to extend over the proposed homes and near a planned school. While waters are a bit muddy as to who knew what and when, there is no disagreement as to the core issue - the route chosen by power line developer Boralex is the worst possible choice, said John Ariens, a consultant for the residential developer. While West Lincoln Mayor Doug Joyner said the municipality has been working diligently with the Boralex officials and the residential developer for some time, he noted in a text, “...the new owners are very busy adhering to the road use agreement, and their REA approvals - very complicated...and lately it’s been a bit of a moving target - very, very, high level provincial conversations.” Steve Megannetty, another consultant, told NewsNow last week the decision by Boralex to go with the chosen route over two other alternatives previously discussed was a surprise to all involved. He clarified this by saying there had been ongoing discussions with the developer and the township and that Boralex was clearly told the chosen route was untenable. “There was a proposal for an alternative line that would end all the problems - but what I didn’t say was that I didn’t believe that it would work. The development company made it sound that it would work and See POWER, Page 2

POWER From Page 1 they would try to get it done. It was a long shot at best and it failed in the end. Everyone - including the Region and the Township believed
that the logical route would be chosen if the third option failed,” said Megannetty, noting the line itself came up in early July, but it was the ultimate chosen route which came as a surprise in the last couple of weeks. “We’ve been working on it since mid-August. The township has been great helping us sort this out.” Ariens agreed. “(Last week’s) article in the Oct 8 issue was right on point. The Township, Region and land developers were all under the impression that the power lines were going to follow an alternate route that would by-pass the new school and future residential area,” said Ariens. “We only found out last week that the al-

Just imagine how this would look with a hydro corridor following the road?” Ariens said. “There is a viable alternative available that will not impact any wetlands and it is illustrated on (an agraphic) prepared by the proponent. Why would anyone propose to locate a hydro corridor through the gateway to a new urban area at the entrance to Smithville and next to a new school when there is a suitable alternative available?” Joyner also noted there are issues regarding road use agreements at both the West Lincoln and Regional levels, adding an update from Boralex was expected this week.

It was just under 100 years ago, during the first two weeks of July 1917 when Europe was locked in the bedlam and hor-
rors of war and the bodies of soldiers lay where they fell in Flanders Fields that, in the misty solitude of a tranquil lake in central Ontario, a single human body floated on the still surface. The body was identified as that of Tom Thomson, artist, canoeist and the man who inspired the Group of Seven. Thomson epitomized the rugged beauty of the Canadian landscape, generally little known and under appreciated at that time. Using bold and vibrant colour in his paintings, he brought the spirit of the wilderness of places like Algonquin Park to the Canadian
public and eventually to the world. Tom Thomson would have celebrated his fortieth birthday on August 5. Though Thomson’s death was officially recorded as accidental due to drowning, his demise has become one of Canada’s greatest mysteries. The question is of course what really happened and why. What were the circumstances under which Thomson, a proficient canoeist and outdoorsman could drown on a calm lake and who may have known more than is currently recorded. Too many possibilities raising too many
more questions. But who better to address these questions than another painter. Chris O’Hoski is the education and media coordinator for Grimsby Public Art Gallery. His figurative work has been published in the International Contemporary Artist Magazine and, as did many, he grew up with Thomson’s vibrant images of the Canadian landscape. O’Hoski will offer answers to some of these questions and shed some light on the investigation. The meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Building, Adelaide and Ontario Streets in Grimsby.

Grimsby barn fire does $500K damage A Saturday night barn fire on Sobie Road did $500,000 in damage. Grimsby Fire Department responded to the 8:30 p.m. call with the duty officer arriving in eight minutes to find the structure fully involved, said Chief MIke Cain. While GFD’s response was augmented with tanker and manpower support from Lincoln and West Lincoln Fire Departments, it took several hours to bring under control. Crews remained on scene until mid-afternoon the following day suppressing hot spots. The fire marshal’s office was called in to investigate the cause of the
fire. At this time there has been no conclusion of origin, but the fire is not being treated as suspicious. “On behalf of GFD, I want to extend my appreciation to our friends and neighbours at Lincoln and West Lincoln Fire Departments. By all accounts, the training and growing integration of our services was evident on site this past weekend,” said Chief Cain. “The crews worked seamlessly and collaboratively during the suppression of the challenging fire. I commend the efforts of all personnel present from the three departments for their professionalism.”

Automotive experts say that snow tires are a worthy investment that improve maneuverability and stopping power on winter roads. Many people leave all-season tires on their vehicles throughout the year, but snow tires may help decrease snow-related accidents and may even help drivers save money on
their auto insurance. Consumer Reports says that autumn is the best time to buy snow tires. As drivers prepare their vehicles for winter, the following snow tire tutorial can shed some light on why driving in winter is safer with snow tires. Snow tires are particularly helpful for people who cannot

months per year often find all-season tires are inadequate and likely to slip. Snow tires make for safer alternatives in such regions. Snow tires are typically manufacturered the previous summer, meaning inventory is finite, according to Consumer Reports. Drivers who wait until the first snowstorm to purchase their snow tires may encounter limited inventory and find it difficult to locate the right size tire for their vehicles. That’s why it’s important to shop early. Retire snow tires earlier than you would allseason tires. Snow tires lose almost all of their effectiveness once they reach 6/32-inch deep tread. Snow tires can make roads safer for drivers who live in locales with long, snowy winters.

Snow tires provide ample grip and make it easier for cars to turn corners and stop on slick roads. As the mercury falls, the rubber used to make traditional tires can become hard and less pliable, compromising its ability to grip the road. However, many snow tires are made with a specialized rubber that remains supple even in very cold temperatures, making it easier for the tire to hug the roadways even when those roads are in poor condition. Why a clean air filter is important Durham Automotive Motorists routinely check their tires for proper inflation, top off engine fluid levels and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the importance of keeping engine air filters clean. Engine air filters are a relatively inexpensive vehicle part, but they perform a very important job. For every gallon of gas a car burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gallons of air, and that air must be filtered to help keep an engine clean. Air filters catch all of the dust, grime,
insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine itself. Without the air filter, those contaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abrasion. If the air filter in the engine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air. Clean air filters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to enable the engine to function properly. Engines need
adequate air for the combustion process to take place. Without the proper combustion levels, vehicles cannot perform properly or efficiently and the engine may burn more gas or get fewer miles to the gallon. A dirty filter also can rob an engine of power. Drivers may notice sluggish acceleration. Air filters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a problem only develops after considerable neglect. Air filters may not need to be replaced at each and every

oil change service call. Many technicians advise replacing the filter every 8,000 miles. However, drivers who live in particularly dry and dusty regions may need to replace filters more frequently. Mechanics can often detect when an air filter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air filter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the filter is a relatively inexpensive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new filter provides.

the smalltown values are important to their clients, as they are to them. “It’s the small things, details,” said Bishay, who noted they will be running flu shot clinins in-store, for example, for the first time. Their recent osteoporosis clinic went well. For Hopkins, it was time. “I’m really going to miss the clients and the staff. I already do,” said Hopkins. noting the shop opened in 1949. “I can retire knowing I sold to two good guys. They believe in the independent pharmacist and they have some new ideas. The owners at Hopkins IDA may have changed, but the smalltown philosophy has not. After 60 years of ownership by Jennifer Hopkins, and her father, John, before her, the Vineland pharmacy has changed hands. Peter Hanna and Raymond Bishay are the new and excited owners. “Everything has gone very smoothly. We’re very happy about that. Jen has been great to work with in the transition, said Hanna. Neighbours still waiting for GBF call Dear Editor, About a month ago I was approached by a PR firm from St. Catharines representing the GBF Board with an offer to meet and negotiate a reopening of the Staircase and Right of Way between the GBF’s premises and the western end of Melrose Ave. After many letters to the Board that were never responded to and a petition from the neighbourhood with a commitment to fix and maintain the Staircase Right and Right of Way that was presented to them months ago this was a pleasant surprise. Though having it come through a PR Company was worrisome to our neighbourhood community. On the evening of Sept. 13th myself and three members of our Neighbourhood Committee met the PR person and three members of the GBF Board at the Grimsby Town hall. We were presented with a re-
Letter quest to take over management of the Staircase & Right of Way and to mitigate all insurance liability. We were told that the staircase section of the Right of Way was to be removed at the end of the month for the repaving of the parking lot but were given no commitment on a replacement date. We were asked, as a show of good faith on our part, to not picket the 50th Anniversary of the Foodbank which was a strange request that was easy for us to agree to. The GBF Board’s offer to our neighbourhood is pretty much the same one they made to the town of Grimsby that was rejected earlier this year. We can come up with a plan to fix and maintain the Staircase and Right of Way but the mitigation of liability is an almost impossible task for a neighbourhood to assume. We have request-
ed a second meeting with the GBF Board’s representatives for this week and asked that the Board, in a show of good faith, NOT remove the staircase during the repaving process. We have been told that removing the stairs is only a recommendation from the paving company and it is our understanding that the parking lot has been repaved in the past without the need to remove the metal
stairs. So, we continue to talk to the GBF Board through their PR representative and a few board members with the hopes that this is a two sided negotiation and we can have this 60-year-old Public Right of Way reopened again to our neighbourhood and all of the other residents of Grimsby who have grown up with it and used it over the years. Best Regards Patrick Maloney

Crafty magician
Calvin The Magician, aka Calvin Cutts, amazed passersby at the Vineland Craft show last weekend. Great weather brought huge crowds to both the Vineland show and Ball’s Falls annual craft extravaganza.
Heritage award nice feather in cap Congratulations to Town of Grimsby and its Heritage Advisory Committee on being named a recipient of the Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership. It sounds lofty...maybe because it is. Many know of Grimsby’s unique and interesting heritage buildings, mainly because the municipality has done a good job in recent decades - along with Grimsby Historical Society - of telling all who will listen these structures are not just worth saving, but they are an asset to the community as a whole. Whether it be the Neutral Indian Burial Ground or one of the remarkable collection of 18th and early 19th century heritage sites such as Nelles Manor, built 1798 and the Nelles-Fitch House, built 1787, The Engagement at the Forty battle site (1813), or the colourful Victorian era cottage community of Grimsby Beach, Grimsby is rich in preserved history. This award is proof preservation efforts have worked. M.W.
Better vote, or no whining allowed A lot of things have been going on in the last few months, many needing a bit of an update, so this week will be a bit of a grab bag and, oh ya, there is a federal election next week. So let’s start with that. Every time an election rolls around, I say the same thing. If you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain. No matter which candidate or party you support, if you did not vote, you do not have a ticket to the complaining dance. Aside from every vote being important in our democratic society – and the fact you get to do it in the first place – if you cannot be bothered to get yourself to a polling station, why would you care what happens. You had your chance to voice your opinion with your vote, and that is the most important voice. Not the one at the dinner table complaining about taxes or the feds joining an international trade agreement or even that you got bad service at the passport office. Vote! Then whine all you like. ******** If you are reading this Thursday evening after a hard day of work, you have about 24 hours to get your Hat Trick Hockey entry in. The deadline Monday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. Entries must be in our door by that time. We added two more sponsor this week with the addition of Mounta-
MIKE WILLISCRAFT inview Cycle and Mountainview Sharpening, so entrants will be eligible for even more prizes. The Gnys’s, who own both shops, have put up a BMX bike as a draw prize, so we will use that as a very nice draw prize at the all-star break. As well, a winner each week will get a free sharpening for skates, or even a chainsaw (for example)...whatever needs sharpening. Of course, the winner will get a trip for two to a Cup final game, so good luck to all. We received quite a few entries more than last year by the Early Bird deadline, so it will be interesting to see what happens this week. ******* Besides Hat Trick, which was by far number one... and the Blue Jays...a lot of people this week wanted to know a little more about my comment last week regarding waterfront properties and what is happening there. As I said last week, I do not have sufficient information confirmed to be able to provide detail. Until deals are closed, they can go “poof!” in a
second, right real estate folks? That said, there are three major properties, two of which I have been told have changed hands, one which is imminent. The first two are very big, so we’ll see what happens. An example of why speculation is not a good thing is a project which was not just rumoured but had rough plans drafted and could have been a real deal where a major waterpark – it was suggested to be a $1 billion project – may have been built out at Grimsby’s Winston Road area where all the lakefront condos and new building is happening. My guess is it would have meant getting a series of land deals to take shape at one time, and that can certainly be difficult. As I understood things, the developer also wanted roads in the area reconfigured to some degree, so the property could have lakefront through to QEW access. It won’t happen now, but that could have been interesting. ******* It was good to hear the GBF and neighbours from the Melrose neighbourhood in Grimsby are talking about a resolution to the issue of the staircase which connects the neighbourhood to downtown. The GBF representative I spoke to is optimistic a solution will be found. The residents hope so, but they say they need to be met halfway. Talks continue.
