ties is “not a foregone conclusion”. “The consolidation of these 3 secondary schools absolutely is not a foregone conclusion. There will be public meetings - one held at each secondary

With enrolment having declined, according to DSBN numbers, by 28 per cent in the last five years (607 students) and capital investment needed - BDSS $26 million; GSS $19 million and SLHS $7 million - board officials say their best move is to amalgamate them. “Programs and extracurriculars follow students, so if enrollment declines, so too do programs and extra-curriculars. This is one of the factors that will be considered when make the decision about what to do with these three high schools,” said West Lincoln Trustee Diane Chase. “We know that we have

There are public meetings scheduled that will provide opportunities for groups or individuals to make presentations to the committee, and people can also submit their ideas online through the website. I encourage everyone to submit their thoughts either online or in person and I am looking forward to hearing from residents of these areas,” said Chase. Both noted the review process is at the start and

public input sessions are planned starting Thursday, Nov. 3, followed by Nov. 10, Dec. 15 and Jan. 26. The report received outlines closing BDSS and GSS June 30, 2020, with the new school opening its doors in September, 2020. These decisions are very difficult and I will take all the input from staff, community and make our decision based on what is best for each and every student,” said Keddy-Scott. “This process has only just begun, we have received (the) staff recommendation only. Interest Rate Differential (IRD) refers to a calculation used by banks and other mortgage lenders to determine the cost of breaking a fixed-rate mortgage, should the borrower decide to pay the mortgage off prior to the contract maturity date. Housing starts down in Sept. Housing starts in Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) were trending at 2,662 units in September compared to 3,064 units in August, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The trend is a six month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts. “The trend in Hamilton CMA total housing starts was down due to

a broadly based slowdown in the trends for starts of singledetached and semidetached homes as well as apartments in September 2016 compared to the previous month. The trend in townhouse starts was unchanged in September,” said Abdul Kargbo, CMHC’s senior market analyst for Hamilton and Brantford CMAs, which includes Grimsby. “The trend for townhouse starts has been

rising steadily in 2016, supported primarily by demand from price-sensitive buyers as townhouses are considered relatively more affordable.” CMHC uses the trend measure as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of the state of the housing market.

Ontarioâ€™s Minister of Energy Glenn Thibault met with Grimsby Power officials last Friday. A press conference was held at the Roberts Road facility with staff and several aldermen in attendance.

That was interesting... So the Minister of Energy dropped by Grimsby Power last Friday. The only reason this publication was informed about it was because someone on the inside let the office know. The information stated media and town officials has been informed of the press conference, yet there was no media there other than NewsNow. Staff and a handful of council members were on hand. While it was hoped the Minister Glenn Thibault had dropped into town to announce the Province had finally figured out Grimsby’s biodigester was going to be a double dose money pit for everyone in town - they get to pay because council guaranteed the project which is going to end up very close to two years overdue and horribly (again) over budget AND the provicial FIT contract will pay out about $26 million in fees for hydro generated - if it ever works at all. No such luck. It was just a recap of energy policies about a month old. It might be a good idea to invite him back at the end of November when FIT’s one-year extension deadline will have come and gone. M.W.

Chips about to fall in nom race Ya know, I am not naive to the seedy underbelly of the political game. My personal fave: Et tu Brute? That’s politics, baby! In this go round for the Niagara West Glanbrook PC nomination the playing field is pretty clear, as long as you are prepared to watch for the landmines. I have spent the vast majority of my working career parked on Grimsby’s Main Street and, if things don’t go my way, it is likely I will remain there for another 20 years...and that is just fine with me. For someone such as myself, who joined the fray to represent the Tories in this Riding because I really believe I can do something for the betterment of the community, it is pretty sad to see some of the desperate gamesmanship that actually goes on. It is not shocking to me, and really shouldn’t be to the general public when one considers that some of these guys are driven by being career politicians. If they don’t get elected, they don’t have a job. That’s where the desperation comes in. When you see a fellow like Rick Dykstra parachute into Niagara West it most assuredly is not for the betterment of the community. There is only one person on the planet who will benefit from that scenario. There is absolutely nothing the St. Catharines resident can do for our community that

MIKE WILLISCRAFT every other candidate in the race could not duplicate. I have been covering events and organizations in this area for two-plus decades and yet, somehow, I have never met the man. There was a sighting at Tim Hudak’s final barbecue and I heard he was at the Lincoln Chamber AGM, but I didn’t see him myself...although I did meet the fellow running his campaign. I get that he may have some business contacts in the area, but he could carry those issues forward just as well - I’m talking to you grape and wine people - if he was elected in the Riding which he lives. This sole issue should be enough to write the man off as a candidate, yet some will still support him, and that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. I get it. The other “titan” - as the Toronto Star dubbed them - of Niagara West is Tony Quirk. Simply, when I asked the first dozen or so local people about the notion of me running for the PC nomination the decided consensus was,

“anybody but Tony”. Honestly, that worm has turned to “anybody by Dykstra” to some degree but major concerns with Mr. Quirk’s decision making - his stint on Niagara Power and support for the biodigester and the useless CoGen chief among them - raise all kinds of red flags there. And it was on those two potential representatives which my decision to run was based. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, my support has come from all over the riding: professionals, farmers, business people, service club folks, you name it. There are core PCs, Liberals and a great many who have never had a thing to do with politics. Every single one recognizes I am the candidate getting into this thing for the right reasons. Where the chips fall, we will find out much sooner than later if what I am hearing about the writ is true. So I ask that no matter what candidate you support, get your membership forms in asap as I am sure the deadline will move up. Let’s have a great meeting - ONE meeting - so all can hear the same message and let the best candidate win. If my people think someone else gave a great speech and converted them, more power to them. Change your mind. Going blindly into a vote married to a candidate because they robo-called you first, should not be a criteria on which a sound decision is based.
