Beamsville Towne Centre was evacuated Tuesday just after noon after youth jumping on a gasline broke the pipe causing a gas leak. Lincoln Fire Services was dispatched at about 12:15 p.m. to the back of the plaza, said Lincoln deputy fire chief Bill Blake, adding the fire service secured the area and

evacuated the town centre and adjacent businesses. “Once isolated, all premises were checked for gas levels and reopened once it was safe to do so, “ said Blake, adding it was about 2 p.m. before people were allowed to return to their businesses. No one was injured.

ALS Amethyst Dinner set for Oct. 24 The 5th annual Amethyst for ALS annual signature dinner takes place on Friday, Oct. 24 at Liuna Station in Stoney Creek at 6:30 p.m. Last October, 260 patrons attended the 4th annual dinner which raised $68,000 for patient support at McMaster and for

doug kelterborn research. The immediate target is to raise $100,000 in the next few years.

This year’s honouree is Doug Kelterborn, a long-time resident of Grimsby whose wife passed away several years ago with ALS. Doug subsequently got involved with the clinic as a volunteer mentor. One hundred per cent of the funds contributed go directly to the clinic for patient care, help in purchasing expensive equip-

ment (which the clinic loans out to patients) and a portion goes to Dr. John Turnbull’s research team. At present there is no cure for ALS nor are there any drugs available to help slow the process down. Charitable receipts will be issued. Busking for a Cure raises $1,200 A fundraiser held in memory of a dear friend and tireless volunteer has raised $1,200 for the CIBC Run for the Cure. “Tricia Vaughan was an integral part of the agricultural society,” said Albert Witteveen, entertainment chair for the West Niagara Fair. Busking for a Cure raised $1,200 in memory of Vaughan who died last November at age 41 having spent many years involved in 4H, first as a member and then as a Leader; Junior Farmers, West Niagara Agricultural Society and many other community organizations. “Patricia’s passion for the agri-

cultural fair was worn with pride and unbridled enthusiasm in lending her incredible energy to giving the youth a place and opportunity to showcase their talents and agricultural skills,” said Jim Edwards, owner of Guitar Loft. “If there was one thing that resonated with me about Patricia, it was her passion for farming and agriculture, for encouraging youth to be involved and her love for her family. The second thing right behind that was her unbelievable and seemingly unlimited energy which is terribly missed and that she will always be remembered for.”

WIND TURBINES: We need strong municipality involvement. We have the democratic right to make decisions on policies that have been put in place and the right to know how the Provincial government can change laws. There are many qestions... we need answered. BUILD NURSING HOME: We want to stay in our community. DITCHES: I will be a solid voice on having the ditches cleared for our farm fields to properly drain in order for farmer’s crops to grow. PAVING ROADS: I have a strong interest in having our gravel roads paved, making our roads safer for all especially school buses. LIGHTS: Safer intersections needed in our community. SNOW REMOVAL: Snow drifts to be removed as quickly and effectively as possible to prevent accidents MORE ROAD SIGNS: Improve road signage for school buses, children at play, children crossing signs, animal farm - slow down signs, advance stop signage, motocycle slow down signs. GROWTH: I will advocate an increase in new retail opportunities in our town. We need to keep our dollars in town. Let’s not lose the next generations to big cities because we can’t accommodate our growing population. RENOVATE HOCKEY ARENA: Not to build new. Our taxes would go up. CLEAR & CONCISE: I don’t like “Small Print”.

Police warning about designer clothing scam The Niagara Regional Police has received several complaints from Niagara residents who have purchased fake designer clothes from two men operating from their vehicle. The men approach people and strike up a conversation by seeking directions and say they are from Italy and work for a designer. Official groundbreaking at Southward Park on Mud St. The ground may be officially broken and work started at Grimsby’s new 88-acre sports complex on Mud Street, but it will be nearly a year before it is ready for full use, said Mayor Bob Bentley. Local dignitaries gathered for the opening last Thursday afternoon at the site which will include four full soccer pitches, four junior pitches, four ball diamonds, a leash-free dog park, walking paths and more. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Bentley, noting a sports complex was included

in the recreation Master Plan in 1988. Since that time, through Grimsby Sports Council and other means, local groups have been asked to provide a wish list. “We tried many locations below the escarpment over the years. We tried to buy land from the school board at Oakes Road but they wanted too much money,” said Bentley. “This park will allow us to meet all the groups’ needs.” The plan, at this point, is to have things completed and ready for use by August 2015.

Santa will arrive in Grimsby Dec. 6 in 57th annual parade Santa Claus has confirmed he will be making a special appearance in Grimsby at the Santa Claus parade. Although winter has not yet cooled the air, it is time to start thinking about Christmas. On Saturday, Dec. 6, The Grimsby Santa Claus Parade will make its way through downtown Grimsby for the 57th edition. This year’s theme will be an Old Fashioned Canadian Christmas. The Grimsby Santa Claus Parade will kick off the Christmas season by providing a fun and festive evening for thousands of community members to enjoy. This year the parade will start at 5:15 p.m. The route will be the same as last year, beginning at Town Hall, moving east on Livingston and Main Street West, and ending at the Ontario Street intersection.

Road closures will be in place from 4-8 p.m. the day of the parade. If you are interested in participating in the parade there are plenty of opportunities available for local businesses and community members to get involved with the event. The Grimsby Santa Claus Committee encourages those

Fight Riley Fight raises $7,000 The Peach King Centre was packed last Saturday as the community came out to support Riley Dunda and the Fight Riley Fight fundraiser. “Things went really well,” said Richard Dunda, Riley’s dad. Riley suffered a massive stroke last May at his Grimsby home and has been fighting his way back since then. “The event raised about $7,000 and was well attended given it was thanksgiving weekend.” Dunda said Grimsby Minor Hockey participated in multiple ways including running the snack bar, providing volunteers, organizing a kids’ game and promoting the event. Dunda was grateful to all those who stepped up to lend a hand including Janet Slade and Jimmy Vlajkov and Bob Cutaia and the Grimsby Referees Association for providing the referees. “The Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation team were also there and were a huge help. Special thanks to Pete Richard and John MacDonald for organizing the OJHL alumni team and to Dave Brownridge and Dan Nielson for organizing the Peach King Alumni team (Peach Kings Alumni won 8 -4),” he added. “Also a big thanks to the town of Grimsby for donating the ice and Bruce Atkinson and Sarah Sweeney at Parks & Rec.

Curbside branch collection is available across the region to all single residential households and apartments with six units or less. Branch collection takes place on four consecutive weeks to Nov. 21 in the fall on residents’ regular garbage and recycling collection day. There is also a spring collection schedule. When setting out branches for collection it is important to remember: •Branches must be tied in bundles •Maximum weight of bundle = 22.7 kg (50 lbs.) •Maximum size of bundle = 1.5 m (5 ft.) in length and 0.5 m (1.6 ft.) in diameter •Individual branches inside of

Election races don’t get much hotter Coverage for last week’s allcandidates night for Lincoln mayors and regional candidates was a bit of an oddity for me. Due to a conflict, my trusty reporter sidekick could not attend and I had the duties of moderator, so I could not cover the meeting as I normally would. So it seemed best to shed a little bit of light on how things went for the edification of our Lincoln readers. The candidates were all well-spoken, on point and succinct, relatively speaking. Questions were structured so all mayoral candidates (Eric Gilbert, Alvin Danyluck, Sandra Easton, Rob Condotta and John Kralt) or both regional councillor candidates (W. Peter Randall and Bill Hodgson) would have an opportunity to express their opinion so those on hand could compare views. The crowd, with the seating full and about 45-50 standing, came in about 240, which was solid. Sometimes crowds at these things turn into more cheerleaders or shouting lobbyists for a particular side of an issue, but there was none of that. The only audible reactions from the gathering came at two points: when a question was put to candidates about whether or not they thought council experience was needed in a mayor, and; when seemingly opposing comments were made regarding the compatibility of the town council as a whole. While all the candidates who do have council experience outlined the importance of having a handle on the issues and how things

MIKE WILLISCRAFT operate. Then Gilbert was up, the only candidate without experience on council. He tactfully disagreed drawing some smiles and laughs from the crowd. After a couple of mayoral candidates and Hodgson commented that the current crew got along great and maintained an atmosphere of mutual respect, Easton basically said those days are gone. Not to overstate that, and I paraphrase, but Easton was basically saying a few eggs need to get broken if an omelette is going to get made and she is just the person to do that. That caused a bit of stir. Some key points: 1) all agreed the proposed bio-solids plant proposed for Frost Road is just plain bad for the town and would oppose its development to the ends of the earth 2) The next council needs to maintain a focus on developing a stronger business core, meaning new businesses and enhancing downtown cores to allow existing businesses to thrive. 3) Vineland Public School: All were sympathetic and would love to preserve the historic site. All but Easton

said they would not consider spending Town dollars to buy it, though. Condotta, along with a couple of others, said he would be glad to work with anyone in the private sector who wanted to take the building on, but held out little hope. 4) Escarpment access for truck route...all agreed Bartlett Road in Grimsby was the most suitable site. 5) Waterfront: Kralt said the town should enhance access from its right-ofways to maximize access to the waterfront. 6) Regional transit: most agreed it was a good idea. Randall said implementing a system just to say access is granted, without justification via solid ridership levels, would be a burden to taxpayers and he would not support that. Roads were also an issue, as they are every election year. Usually this involves the Region as the town itself is much more responsive to the wants and needs of residents. Recent tar and chip work in lieu of a real roads has cheesed off a lot of people, and I have to transition to a Grimsby issue here. The region used tar and chip on Reg. Rd. 81 (that’s Main Street West or Hwy. 8 to others, from basically Hunter Road to Oakes. That is just plain silly. To deal with a major connector in such a laissez faire manner is just plain insulting. It is likely the folks who got tarred and chipped in Lincoln feel the same way. Not every road can or should be paved, but a review of standards is clearly in order.

Reader: tar and chip not acceptable Dear Editor, The Town of Lincoln has taken us back to the 1950’s. It has accepted a “Tar & Chip” road maintenance contract that is rumoured to have saved the Town $250,000. They got what they paid for, and we are suffering the consequences. Clouds of dust, grit and gravel flying in all directions with every vehicle. Coated houses, peach orchards, nurseries and graperies. Picture 21st Street in Vineland. It’s the waterfront trail; it’s the natural extension of the South Service Road when the QEW is blocked/slow - which happens quite often. At those times, traffic is so heavy we can neither get in nor out of our driveways unless some traveller takes pity on us. Also, I have redirected transports and tour buses away from the Jordan Valley route because of the Bailey Bridge (10 ton limit). We are the entrance to the 20-Valley Tourism Area Jordan Village, On-The-Twenty , etc., and are listed online as the preferred way to get there from the Q.E. We see extensive bicycle and pedestrian traffic, of course taking advantage of the “waterfront trail” connection. In talking with Lee Ripenburg (Town of Lincoln Roads) he said that we “have always had that (tar & chip) treatment” and they realize that coming down across Red Bridge and approaching Culp Road is the shortcut to the Service Roads to travel Toronto way. (I guess

Letter that is why they made a wide smooth blacktop surface from Jordan to Culp Road!). He seems to think that cars then turn on Culp Road and proceed via Victoria Avenue to the QEW Most of them don’t. I suggested to Lee that in my 35 years on 21st Street, we have never had the treatment we have just received. I have also been assured by Lee that the shoulder entrance to my driveway will be brought up to line up with the newly surfaced road (3 inch difference) - which will be hard to navigate this winter if it is not sloped up - especially with the severe drifting and late plowing on 21st Street! The solution to the “tar & chip” has been to spray calcium chloride on the road. That lasts about 2 days before dust is again flying. The road is appearing to “pock” and shift, and I would suggest that the Town rethink what they are doing, cancel the contract, and redo these roads with the appropriate clear cut stone and sufficient tar to bind it. I would strongly ask that everybody who is eating dust and grit from these “bargain basement” treatments, call Lee Ripenburg and your Councillor at the Town, 905-563-8205, and demand action to stop further pollution. Here are a few of the MAJOR ISSUES I will deal with proactively and in a collaborative manner, as your Mayor: 1. 2.

TRANSPORTATION • work with the Regional Transportation Committee and Council to bring GO-Transit to Grimsby • work with the Region, Citizens and Community Groups to provide a year-round Bus Service to and within Grimsby • work with the Grimsby Active Transportation Committee and Council to continue to encourage development of safe sidewalks, trails, and bike lanes for young and old INFRASTRUCTURE • work with the Region on transferring Livingston Avenue, from Main Street to Casablanca Boulevard, to the town • work with the Town Departments to ensure that a high priority be placed on keeping streets clear of winter snowdrifts, particularly in Downtown • work with Council and the Region to stop the Livingston Road Extension from going through the “WOOD LOT” • work with Council to ensure that all playgrounds are clearly marked and a speed limit maximum of 40 km/hour posted • work with Citizens and Neighbours to have motorists slow down in such areas as Dorchester Road and Red Haven Drive • work with the Hospital Board to ensure Grimsby and West Niagara get a new hospital

ATTRACTING AND RETAINING BUSINESS • work with Grimsby Economic Development Committee (GEDAC) and Council to develop a long-range plan and process for attracting, researching, and planning new businesses within the town • work with Grimsby Chamber of Commerce, GEDAC, and Council to retain and aid expansion of economic activities FINANCIAL • work with the Town Auditors, Southcott Davoli Chartered Accountants, to ensure transparency and cooperation within all of the corporations of Grimsby Power and its subsidiaries, including their auditors • work with the Finance Committee and the Auditors to ensure the Annual Financial Statements are brought from 2012 to a current status, to enable Council to make timely and accurate budgetary decisions • work with Council to consult experts to deal with the co-generator in the brick building southeast of Town Hall, which cost the taxpayers $1million dollars and hasn’t been used in four years • work with Council to ensure the Town doesn’t spend $5-$7 million dollars of taxpayer money for a Bio Digester
