Prudhomme’s project proposed By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Proponents of a major development at Prudhomme’s Landing have returned from the drawing board with a new plan to build about 800 residential units on the 32-hectare property. Planning consultant Barb Wiens, speaking on
behalf of the Vineland property owner Ken Fowler, told those at a public meeting on Monday night at Lincoln’s town hall that their plan for “the largest lakeshore property in an urban area in Niagara” will have a mix of residential and commercial, including a main street style theme. Important to town of-
ficials, the builder and general public will be full access to about one kilometer of waterfront land. “The town square will be a focal point,” said Wiens, noting their plan has it located at the north end of their main street near the lake. While pedestrian connections to existing trails
and the Victoria Shores subdivision to the west are part of the plan, in no uncertain terms do residents of that complex want any part of a road access through their area. Council chambers were packed with residents, many of whom voiced their concern with different See PLAN, Page 2
DSBN begins Vineland school house demolition By Katherine Grant NewsNow Last weekend, the front facade of the Vineland school house was removed brick by brick. Those bricks, made at the former Beamsville Brick Foundry, will be moved inside the new Twenty Valley Public School and rebuilt to preserve the front of the school house. “The school board is doing everything it can to preserve the front facade,” said Cheryl Keddy, trustee for the District School Board of Niagara. Keddy came under fire on social media over the weekend as those fighting to preserve the 1895 school house, watched it being dismantled. “We were accused of taking it down on the weekend because it would be less apparent but it was done then because it couldn’t be done safely while the kids were in their classrooms,” said Keddy. The new school is being built in behind the Vineland Public School on Victoria Avenue, and will open in time for the start of the 20152016 school year. It will replace four schools being closed: Campden, Jordan, Maple Grove and Vineland. The two-storey school will hold

While there is no specific park currently included in the proposal, the land along the shoreline is extensive. Coun. John Kralt asked for specifics about what shape that land would take. Wiens said, roughly, the distance from the back of residential properties to the top of the bluff is 40-45 (150 feet) while from the bluff to the water’s edge was about 50 more feet. Coun. Wayne MacMillan noted a concern with a comment made earlier by Wiens that Niagara Region has suggested the pro-
posal go with higher density plans than proposed, but Wiens clarified to note, “I can appreciate that. They (region officials) were talking commercial areas mainly.” While much of the plan is fluid – staff will generate a report for the planning committee and another public meeting will be held in the New Year – resident Richard Stevens asked if there are artist’s renderings of the plan so everyone could get a visual snapshot. “I think we all agree here we would want a higher end development here. Nobody is excited about what is going on at Casablanca in Grimsby and we would not want that here,” said Stevens. At this point, there are no drawings.

Breakfast Food drive for GBF this weekend The Knights of Columbus don’t want any Grimsby child going to school hungry so they have launched a breakfast food drive. “I was over at the Grimsby Benevolent Fund and they already have lots of empty shelves,” said Joe Cunningham, a member of K of C 4917. “The knights want to get more involved in the community so we have decided a to do a food drive to help fill the gap between Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

A group called the Friends of the Vineland Public School 1895 had rallied to have it preserved and designated as a heritage site. “We are in the business of education,” said Keddy. “We are doing our due diligence in moving forward.” She noted she looked into having the old school moved down the highway to Ball’s Falls Conservation Area but it would have cost “hundreds of
thousands of dollars” to move it. The restoration process would have been just as costly. “The inside of the school was not original, it had been updated many times over the years.” So the school will be torn down. The tribute to the history – the reconstruction of the front facade – will be part of the entrance of the new school. “Never before has this been done,” said Keddy who, as a child, was a student at the Vineland school. “This is the first time the board has gone to such extremes to preserve

The Rotary Club of Grimsby will host its 15th annual Fantasy of Tree exhibit at the Grimsby Museum, 6 Murray St., Grimsby commencing Friday, Nov. 21 at noon and concluding on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. More than 35 decorated trees will be on display, as well as wreaths, and other raffle items. There will also be a silent auction. Weekends will be special as there will be supervised craft activities for children and Santa Claus will be there on each Saturday and Sunday

Traffic marshals needed to help out Santa Dec. 6 The Grimsby Santa Claus Parade is now less than one month away and the parade committee is busy getting all of the entries and entertainers gathered and prepared. Traffic marshals are needed to help out. The Grimsby Santa Claus Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6 at 5:15 pm.
Traffic marshals are positioned along the parade route at some of the side streets to ensure that a barricade is put up, inform drivers of the road closure, give alternate routes, ensure that the roadway is kept clear of vehicles for emergency access and ensure that nearby spectators are staying off of the closed
road. Volunteers are needed for this area from 3:30 – 7:30 pm and most stations allow for the marshals to watch the parade as well. There will be a brief training session. Anyone 16 years of age and older is welcomed to be a traffic marshal. Please contact the Recreation office at 905945-1288.

2 eggs, beaten 1 cup brown sugar 1 tsp. vinegar 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup butter, melted 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup nuts To eggs add next 4 ingredients. Mix until well blended, then add raisins and nuts. Fill shells 2/3 full. Bake at 350º 15 to 20 minutes. Makes 1-1/2 dozen regular sized or 2-1/2 dozen miniatures. For pastry shells you can use pre-made frozen tart shells or make your own. Enjoy!

Good use of cereal and nutritious and healthy l/2 cup grapenut cereal 1 cup milk 3/4 cup white sugar 1 egg (well beaten) 1 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. baking powder l/2 tsp salt 2 cups flour. Soak cereal, milk, sugar, together for 20 mins. Add egg. Sift baking soda and powder, salt and flour. Add flour mixture to wet mixture. Bake in a loaf pan. Bake 350º for one hour.
Chewy Chocolate Chip Almond Bars
1 Package of Pillsbury Ready to Bake refrigerated chocolate chip cookies 2 oz marzipan, diced (1/4 cup) ¼ tsp almond extract 1 can sweetened condensed milk ½ cup Crunchy Almond Butter ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips ½ cup sliced almonds Heat oven to 350º Grease a 9” square pan.
In a large bowl, break up cookie dough, add marzipan and almond extract. Beat with electric mixer on high speed for 2 min. Press dough in bottom of pan. In a small bowl, mix condensed milk and almond butter until smooth; pour over dough in pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips and almonds evenly over condensed milk mixture Bake 30 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool completely in pan and cut into squares.

Currently there are no medications approved to treat the core deficits of autism (social skills, repetitive behaviours). McMaster University/ McMaster Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to investigate whether the drug Riluzole may be helpful with these symptoms. Riluzole is a drug that is already Health Canada & FDA approved for treating adults with a neurological disorder. Why is Riluzole being considered a treatment for ASD? The human brain is never quiet: every region constantly fires electrical signals. Some signals are loud and clear and others are muffled murmurs. In autism, the background murmurs are hard to tune out and the brain becomes noisy, making it difficult to receive clear signals. Its like trying to have a private conversation in a crowded room, some words get lost and the message is hard to understand. Riluzole is a drug that may help some people with ASD tune out brain background noise so that they can receive clear signals. In this way, Riluzole may improve compulsive, aggressive and repetitive behaviours. Unlike current drug treatments, Riluzole may also improve social skills and help kids with ASD talk to other children, make friends and enjoy activities with other people. Who can participate? Children aged 6-17 diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, Autism, PDD-NOS, or Asperger’s Syndrome) may be eligible. You do not have to reside within the hospital’s catchment area in order to participate. Expenses related to participation (e.g. parking, cost of drug) will be paid for by the study. Participants will also receive compensation for their time as a token of appreciation. How do I know if this trial would be a good fit for my child? Decisions about medication always require careful consideration. Dr. Bennett will meet with you at the beginning to provide information and discuss whether this study is right for you and your child. Roll into balls, then place 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. YIELD: one hundred and twelve. (recipe may be halved).

Bio-solids project flushed by Lincoln Planning The notion of a 50,000-tonne biosolids facility proposed for a Frost Road property has been flushed away – at least by Town of Lincoln’s planning committee. With a unanimous vote, the committee rejected a proposed rezoning for a 35-
acre property which could have allowed for the construction of an open lagoon to accommodate storage of human waste. Shire Corp. of Brantford proposed the project and, at previous meetings, touted the use of bio-solids as fertilizer on farmers’ fields as a green
method to supply nutrients to the soil without chemicals. In rejecting the proposal, committee members noted the proposal does not comply with provincial policy or regional or local Official Plans. “The reality is that no one in the community had any
interest in having this type of an industrial application come into play on lands that were not zoned appropriately. This was clear at the public meeting,” said planning chair, Coun. Rob Foster, adding the Town will be ready for an OMB fight.

WL council gives fairgrounds green light It’s a go. The West Niagara Agricultural Society’s new fairgrounds has a green light after a hold on plans was lifted Monday night by West Lincoln council. “We are very thankful to the council of West Lincoln, which, as its final act of the 2010-2014 term, removed the hold on the new fairgrounds property,” said Stephen Capell, president of WNAS. The hold, put in place after neighbouring home owners expressed concerns about the plans, kept the WNAS from finalizing a site plan agreement. Once the site plan agreement is signed, the society will apply for and obtain the desired per-
mits required to erect buildings, and install storm water ponds. “We can finally start moving forward on the goals we started on back in 2007 when our long road to a new fairgrounds and a new combined fair board for all of Niagara started,” said Capell. “Our Raise the Barn, Grow the Community program will now swing into full speed as donations have been trickling in over the last couple of months.” Coun. Joann Chechalk suggested everyone put aside their differences and come together to work for a common goal. The huge draft site plan that is being circulated currently will require time to review.

He tirelessly coached baseball for the youth of his community and won many tournaments. In later years, he volunteered at Kilean Lodge singing and reading to the elderly. Garry was recognized for his volunteering both in Grimsby and also by the province of Ontario. Special thanks to Dr. Glen Mullen and all the very kind and caring nurses at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Candidates had a short window of time and limited budget. They needed their ads done right, to be seen, and economical. We appreciate they chose us. The second reason, undoubtedly, was because the election guidelines on advertising rates are strict. They are supposed to be set and constant, meaning publications can’t drop their rates, discount at ridiculous margins or give away ads for free. That is what you call a level playing field. While that is rare for us to enjoy, we will take the win and move on.

Welland Canal memorial topic of Nov. 19 historical society meeting The Grimsby Historical Society will meet Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Carnegie Building on Adelaide Street at 7 p.m. The topic will be the Welland Canal Fallen Workers’ Memorial with guest speakers Arden Phair and Reinhard Reitzenstein. The construction of the Welland Canal in use today, although an engineering marvel, was not without tragedy. The last phase of construction cost many workers their lives: 131 workers died between 1914 and 1932. This number represents one of the largest losses of life
on any Canadian Government project. A memorial to recognize these men was promised 82 years ago. Last year a task force was set up to recommend a design for the memorial to be unveiled in 2017. Reitzenstein of Grimsby, a noted local artist, is one of the finalists for the design of the memorial. Arden Phair is a former curator of the St Catharines Museum, a local historian and canal enthusiast. He will give an overview of the building of the canal together with a selection of stories of some of the fallen workers.
