FORT: 7,000 kids and counting

By Katherine Grant NewsNow FORT, the local Foundation of Resources for Teens, is all grown up. Although founded back in 2001 as a service to help troubled youth, it has evolved. Its aim is now to prevent the issues it first served. Many of the youth now utilizing the centre – in excess of 7,000 – were not yet born when the first support centre opened in Grimsby. “It’s not about kids who are in trouble, it is about preventing issues such as drug use and homelessness,” said Beth

Shaw, executive director. It isn’t that FORT doesn’t serve teens who are struggling, it does, but its programs have expanded and the results are clear. By teaching youth coping strategies, life skills and providing activities that engage them, they feel they belong, said Shaw. The approach, intended to complement their family life, helps them grow into confident, contributing adults. At FORT, the day begins at 3 p.m. as the youngest of its kids – Grade 6-8 – arrive straight from school.

The first order of business is food. Healthy snacks, fruit, yogurt and granola bars are offered. Next up is homework. “They can’t focus on their homework if they are hungry; they are grumpy and tired,” said Shaw. Although the idea of doing homework right after school might now sound like something the kids are going to want to do, having a high school tutoring program in place has made all the difference. “We have high school kids helping the younger kids,” said Shaw. “The high

school kids learn mentoring and leadership skills and the younger kids get help, and they do want help. This is a program that has just exploded on us.” A whole row of computers line one wall in the basement space of the Carnegie Commons where the Grimsby FORT is located. There are also game tables, comfy couches and armchairs and gaming systems. There is also an arts and crafts table. “We work to create programming that excites See FORT, Page 3

GSS students join in Riley’s fight With a little help from his friends, Riley Dunda’s Fight Riley Fight Campaign, just edged $2,000 closer to the $50,000 mark – one third of the total his family and friends plan to raise. Riley suffered a debilitating stroke in May and has been working his way back from partial paralysis ever since. In gratitude, and to help support the work being done at Hamilton General Hospital, the Dunda family launched a

campaign to raise $150,000 to benefit the hospital’s stroke program, its interventional neuroradiology service and West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. It was Riley’s friends at Grimsby Secondary School who stepped up and raised the cash which was presented to him on Monday afternoon at the school. “That is just a huge amount for students to raise and they really deserve credit for doing

this,” said Linda, Riley’s mom who was on hand for the presentation. “This bring us almost to the $50,000 mark.” The GSS Students Aware committee sold t-shirts and bracelets, and were supported by other student committees as well, with funds being raised at a dance and pumpkin toss said Samantha Galati, who co-ordinated this effort for Students Aware. Riley’s sister Mimi is also a member of Students Aware.

It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Clifford announces her passing after a brief illness. Born October 31, 1915, Dorothy was one of 7 children who travelled around as her Father worked as a construction foreman building notable projects including Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls. Dorothy married her soul mate John (Jack) in 1933 during the Great Depression. As she would later say “We were just two crazy kids in love and we will figure it out.” Jack was deployed to fight for all of our freedoms during WW2 to bravely serve as a Navigator in a Lancaster Bomber leaving behind a pregnant Dorothy with their first born, Janice. Jack didn’t see Janice until she was over 2 years old. Then along came their 2nd daughter, Carol. Later they would marry (respectively) loving and devoted husbands Don Bivand and Brian Salmers. Dorothy had a tremendous zest for life and would show this through serving as a role model for volunteerism. She worked tirelessly at our WLMH for over 30 years and volunteering for the Blood Clinic and Kilean Lodge Seniors Home, to name a few. She was still a lively spirit during her 99th Birthday Celebration (inset picture) at her favorite restaurant for fish and chips at the Casablanca Winery Inn this past October 31st. She will be missed by many including her Grandson’s Jeff and his family and her best friend and loving Craig. She died with great pleasure in the knowing he had found the love of his life, Diane and her son Albert. She is also survived by her affectionate sister Florence and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank so many. Of special note, the staff and angels of Lincoln Park, WLMH, United Mennonite Home, Dr. Samuels and his staff and the many friends of Janice and Carol with special mention to Anne and Beth. Dorothy was a devoted Christian and we would like to thank Barry Jones and her church family of Centennial Baptist Church for all of their prayers and love. Her family will hold a private celebration of life at a future date. In Lieu of flowers the family would be grateful in her memory for all donations to the WLMH Foundation and the Foundation of Resources for Teens (FORT). You earned your rest Dorothy. God Bless You.

Police offering gun amnesty

If you have some unwanted guns or ammunition you would like to be rid of, you have until Saturday to call to have it picked up. The Niagara Regional Police Service PAVIS Unit would like to announce that the Gun Amnesty Event has started. People wishing to surrender any unwanted firearms, air guns, rep-

licas and ammunition for disposal can start calling 289-407-2634 today to schedule a pick up from Wednesday, Nov. 26 to Saturday, Nov. 29. The Niagara Regional Police Service are reminding people NOT to drop off any firearms, air guns, replicas or ammunition at any Niagara Regional Police Service facility.

Most surrendered weapons and ammunition will be destroyed. Firearms with historical significance will be sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences to determine the appropriate course of action. The amnesty provides participants with limited immunity from certain possession and storage offences.

Think FORT when donating It’s a time for giving and certainly everyone is on board with that. The food banks, helping folks less fortunate have a merrier Christmas, those are two biggies when it comes to the plan of many looking to make a donation some place. However, don’t forget about FORT, Foundation of Resources for Teens. FORT has been around a long time. While it initially was very much a crisis management type service for local youth, it has evolved into much more of a social networking opportunity for all kids, while fulfilling its core mandate to provide resource services to teens of West Niagara. Local economy needs a Red Friday Readers drop in all the time with things. Sometimes these “things” are in the form of story ideas; sometimes objects like old typewriters (because they saw one in our front window), or; clippings of items they have seen in other areas during travels which they think I might be interested in. A couple of weeks ago a very nice lady popped in something she had actually lost for more than two years. It was a clipping she extracted from a Florida paper. She thought it would be of interest to me due to its content. She was right. On this day, before the dawn of Black Friday, when Canadians turn into lemmings and flock across the border to donate millions in another country’s economic pool, it seems prudent to have yet another “shop local” conversation. For anyone who has read this space over the years, you would know I am a proponent of supporting the local economy, but NOT at the expense of quality service or fair price. The premise of the clipping – which was developed by a lady named Cinda Baxter back in 2009-2010 when the U.S economy was in a virtual state of collapse – is based on a concept of 3/50. “What three stores would you miss if they disappeared? Stop in. Say Hello. Pick up something that brings you a smile.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Your purchases keep them in business.” The idea is, “Pick 3. Spend $50. Save your local economy.” It really is that simple, but such edicts must always be served up with a caveat, otherwise they are misguided missives telling people to blindly spend their money in a place they might not really want to. And, yes, I have a conflict of interest here. I freely admit that. I am completely dependent on our local economy for my own survival, but having a healthy local economy with options for consumers, jobs for local residents and tax dollars flowing into all levels of government is also vital to the long-term health of our communities. The desire for such a positive economic state was clearly evident during the municipal election when economic development was one of the key issues. The 3/50 concept is just a simple notion which can help residents understand we’re not talking

millions here. It is the little bits here and there which make the wheel go round. Three stores, $50 each, that would carry a lot of weight and it should not be underestimated. Economic studies I have seen over the years repeat the baseline, “$1 spent in the community circulates seven times before it leaves”. Based on that, $150 spent would turn into $1,050 before it leaves. It can be as simple as recognizing that a store right in town has the same product or service that a store elsewhere might have: consumer habit means a lot. It’s not unlike the local newspaper world. I hear all the time people would rather support a paper that is locally owned and keeps all its interests here as opposed to spending with a big corporate entity which is looking to pay out its shareholders. But as I say, it is still up to the businesses to provide great service and fair pricing, then it is up to the consumer to decide. Christmas is an obvious time to think about this kind of thing, especially when running down a list of people for whom you are looking to acquire a gift or two. As far as Black Friday goes, maybe the government could do people and the economy a favour by creating a national holiday and making it a Thursday, thereby creating our own Red Friday situation? Call the MP on that one.

Crossley Marching Band And McMaster Marching Band • Parade at 2:00 p.m. from the Fairgrounds, along Hwy. 20 to Industrial Park Road. • For the sake of livestock – let your dog stay at home. • West Lincoln Firefighters will be collecting foodstuffs for the food bank at Community Care. • Something new this year is The West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce will be collecting “Toonies for Toys” for Community Care. • ‘Art on Ice’ – actually painting on the ice, at the Arena frrom approx. 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. with the live “rock band”, ‘Non- Fiction’ playing on the ice. • ‘Free Skate’ at the Arena with Non-Fiction, sponsored by Touchdown Willy’s from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. • Carol singing at the Presbyterian Church 7:00 p.m., light refreshments to follow.
