Hamilton officials join fight to preserve WLMH By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Concerns about transferred patient loads on neighbouring hospitals, Hamilton city councillors have added their voices calling on Hamilton Health Sciences to find an alternative option to their closure of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s operating rooms for 27 months. Oct. 22 HHS announced it plans to close the ORs, taking with it the prized obstetrics service, to bring that aspect of the aging facility up to current standards. This direction – announced by HHS president and CEO Rob MacIsaac – was developed from an

Oct. 5 consultant’s report. That report, however, did not suggest any long-term closure of any aspect of service, rather, noting the work could be done through a series of weekend closures and a handful of short-term closures all scheduled to minimize impacts on the level of care, patients and staff. While no timeline came with the announcement, January was initially believed to be a target but MacIsaac has repeatedly asserted no timeline has been set. The announcement brought immediate and heated reaction from throughout WLMH’s catchment area bringing well over 500 out

to a hastily called and overflowing public meeting, generated a community action group and a massive petition and letter writing campaign to get the attention of provincial government officials. The petitions took in 18,000 signatures in just a week’s time. As the lengthy series of concerns continue to echo - most recently with Dr. Tom Estall noting in the Nov. 15 edition of NewsNow that he believes none of the comments about concern for patient safety by HHS officials are justified - Hamilton official’s worries for more distant impacts have developed. sued on Monday, Councillors Maria Pearson and Brenda Johnson and Councillor-Elect Brad Clark sent their concerns right to the top. “As we understand it, an active operating room is a prerequisite for any hospital in Ontario providing Emergency Room services. GBF hamper program set to roll The GBF and Grimsby firefighters are teaming again to gather donations for the Christmas Hamper program at the Grimsby Santa Claus Parade this December. Firefighters Jeff Dancer and Jim Bershoeff note that food can be brought to the Dec. 1 Grimsby parade or dropped off at the GBF on Elm Street. As well this year, firefighters will also have a mobile boot drive of sorts. “Often we see people along the route who forgot their food bags or are from out of town and didn’t know

about the drive and they want to donate cash,” said Bergshoeff. “So this year,” said Dancer, “Firefighters will walk along the curb with boots as well to drop donations in.” GBF Community Services program development manager Ashley Marr says those interested can donate food and practical supplies such as blankets, clothing, hygiene items or gift cards. “A lot of the gifts people asked for are practical items, things needed that they are normally unable to purchase on a fixed income,” said Marr.

For example, take the case of an existing homeowner who is applying for a mortgage pre-approval to purchase a rental property. She also has a HELOC mortgage on her home with a $300,000 credit limit, but only owes $40,000. The Bank is going to assess the pre-approval mortgage application with the inclusion of a monthly HELOC payment of $1805, whereas the contract minimum payment owing on the 40K balance is closer to $148… This new way of vetting HELOCs will have a significant impact on a borrower’s ability to be approved for further credit. Since 2013, RBC has been assessing borrowers based on HELOC credit limit, and Manulife Bank is another lender that practices such conservative lending. I anticipate that, eventually, all mortgage lenders will adopt this practice. surgical and obstetrics department as they provide excellent service in close proximity to their homes,” said Clark in an interview. “Such a decision will increase the demand on Hamilton’s EMS, increase the potential for Code Zeros which could put lives at risk.” For Pearson, her phone has been ringing constantly. “Losing service for these residents and residents in the Grimsby area would be devastating. Not only did council not like that motion, CAO Derik Brandt told council there was an error in the document and no staff had had time to vet it. “The bylaw that the resolution proposed be adopted was prepared by SGL Planning & Design Inc. I’d have very significant objections to Council approving a bylaw written by an outside group that has never been reviewed by staff,” said Brandt on Tuesday. While Ald. Nick DiFlavio lobbied hard for the motion, saying, “It’s not a perfect plan, but I like it,” the motion did not survive.

In the recorded vote John Dunstall, Joanne Johnston, Dave Kadwell and Dave Wilson voted against the proposal. DiFlavio, Carolyn Mullins, Michelle Seaborn and Mayor Bob Bentley, who voted last to tie the vote, voted in favour. “The motion is defeated. It’s a tie,” said Bentley, who added the motion submitted by the developer “...is a recommendation we cannot do tonight. This one is not appropriate at this time.” The matter goes back to planning committee for revisions on key points of contention before it comes back to council.

Smithville Christmas in the Village Santa Claus Parade Saturday, Nov. 24 Start time, from Smithville Arena 2 pm.

This year’s theme is “Christmas Songs”. The route runs from the arena along Hwy. 20 (West St) to Griffin Street North, turning right at the stop light, proceeding along Canborough Street, past the Town Hall and ending at the intersection of Canborough and Townline Road. Road closures for the parade will begin at 1:15 pm, so make sure to come early and avoid the closures. Activities During The Day: • Smithville United Church will have Breakfast with Santa from 9-11 am • St. Luke’s will be hosting their annual Christmas Craft & Bake sale from 9 am-1 pm. • Natural Abilities in Smithville will be having a Christmas Open House on Parade day. • West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce will be collecting Toonies for Toys along the route • St. Martin’s Catholic Elementary School staff and students are collecting new socks of all sizes and the West Lincoln Fire Department will be collecting non-perishable food items along the route, too. • Stanpac will once again be providing hot chocolate at the beginning of the parade and Niagara Pallet will be handing out cookies at the start of the parade. • The Hot Dog cart at the CIBC parking lot will be open for business with a portion of the day’s proceeds going to West Lincoln Community Care • True Men’s Barbershop will have popcorn available during the parade • At Willow Tree Studios, Alexander’s Fudge has special Christmas Fudge available for sale with a portion of the proceeds to Community Care • RBC Smithville Branch will be giving away hot chocolate alongside Wayne Schilstra (next door to the bank) who will be giving away popcorn to parade goers • Families are reminded that letters to Santa can be dropped off at any Canada Post mailbox or branch. After the parade, join us at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 393 and warm up with some chili; followed by a public skate at the arena from 4:30-6:00 pm, sponsored by Topp Farms. New home for Miracle on King Street Community Care of West Niagara’s Miracle on King Street will have a new home in Providence Church this year. The event runs Saturday, Dec. 15 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The move allows for expansion of the event, increased safety and promotes greater traffic flow for the downtown businesses during the holiday rush. The space at Providence Church is about 800 meters west of the original location. As always, entry to this event is free. Food trucks and beverage sales will be available and donations will be accepted at each activity to go towards the programs provided at CCWN. You will see all the same things as last year with a blend of traditional “must haves” such as horse drawn carriage rides, food trucks, photos with Santa, live entertainment as well as some new attractions like a live animal petting zoo and a drawing contest for all kids in Lincoln. Donors can also choose to sponsor a senior or a family through CCWN this year. They are asking everyone in our community to come together to offer a special support to families within Lincoln that cannot financially afford costs that come with Christmas.

Minister’s Medal honours RCVV volunteer The Minister’s Medal Honouring Excellence in Health Quality and Safety is an annual award program that recognizes excellent work done by health care partners across Ontario. Alana Smith is this year’s Patient, Family and Caregiver winner. Smith has been a volunteer for Rose Cottage Visiting Volunteers, an organization that supports patients who have palliative care needs, for the past 18 years. Alana created the

Montreal Canadiens alumni to take on Town of Grimsby at Peach King Centre The Montreal Canadiens will take on the Town of Grimsby squad Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Peach King Centre. Oh, did we mention the teams were alumni for both sides in the Grimsby Minor Hockey Association fundraiser? Yes, the Habs alumni will return to Grimsby, a point of history for the storied franchise.
