D’Angelo named new Niagara CAO A six-month search has shown Niagara Region council that the grass may not be greener outside the area as Carmen D’Angelo was named CAO on Monday after a special meeting. D’Angelo has held senior leadership roles in both municipal and healthcare sectors in his career while most recently holding

Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority’s CAO position. “Carmen has a strong understanding of Niagara’s economic, social and political environment, having worked closely with Niagara’s 12 municipalities and surrounding areas as CAO of the NPCA,” said Niagara Reg. Chair Alan Caslin. “He has developed

excellent working relationships with many members of regional council that sit on the NPCA Board. During the six-month recruitment period, our corporate management team and acting CAO Maurice Lewis have worked hard moving forward regional council’s strategic plan and our key priorities.” D’Angelo replaces for-

St. Helen’s readies for bazaar Shopping will be a wrap with a large variety of unique gifts from handmade quilts to homemade chocolates, Saturday, Nov. 26, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Helen Church annual Christmas bazaar. A number of popular vendors will be returning this year with beautiful artwork by Butterfly Brushes, handmade Christmas ornaments by Chubby Bunny designs, and delicious and creative homemade chocolate and treats by Sweet Treats by Joanna. Epicure and Meljoe homemade soaps are joining the bazaar for

the third year, and as always, look for the bake sale and plant sale. Thomas stands for NDP Mike Thomas, former president of the Hamilton Police Association, well represent the New Democratic Party in the Nov. 17 Niagara West Glanbrook byelection. Thomas, who is a Binbrook resident, and wife Lucy have two children and two grandchildren. The Canadian Combat Alliance has announced that Shane Weaver of Grimsby will represent Canada at the IMMAF 2016 European Championships in Prague. Biodigester a trick, definitely no treat A few weeks ago when the provincial minister of energy was in Grimsby I was genuinely excited to be dropping in at Grimsby Power’s Roberts Road works yard for a press conference. I had hoped the Liberals were pulling their FIT funding and the biodigester would die immediately. No such luck. I noted before the event was a truly weird experience as I ended up being the only media at this press conference and I only found out about it because a staffer wanted to make sure I knew about it. Which begs the question, among many, how do you have a press conference with no press? That conundrum is painfully typical of all things Niagara Power and it was not unlike the recent decision to sell off its 25 per cent stake in Niagara Regional Broadband Network...the fibre optics company which was one of the initiatives developed by Rob Hattin when he was running the board of directors back in the day. One can debate the why and wherefors all day: did they get enough, why no consultation, why no public input on selling an important Town-owned asset, was it shopped? Etc, etc. Know this...the Town won’t see a dime. Maybe, just maybe the LONG OVERDUE dividend the board has been promising to pay “soon” since last fall’s AGM might get paid, but that’s about it. Oh yes, maybe if council is lucky that extra $600,000

The problem now is people, armed with loads of what should be taxpayers’ money, we won’t hear a peep about that project until we find out how much money it going to lose on a regular basis...and only that will happen when the money runs out. Yet another expensive example of why no municipal council should be allowed to hide behide pri-

A scary day of reckoning will come. ****** To end on a positive note...Convos Youth Zone is hosting a fundraising dinner this Saturday at Conversations Cafe. With seatings at 4:30-5:45 p.m. and 6-7:15 p.m., reservations are recommended as the event sold out quickly last time. Suggested donations of $12 for adults and $7 for children seven years and younger will all go to supporter the great work these folks are doing for youth in the community. The Youth Zone is open at lunch time for students noon-12:40 p.m. as well as Thursday and Saturday evenings from 6:30-9:30 p.m. As well, weekly tutoring sessions are available from 3:30-5 p.m. For those who have not dropped in to see what it is all about, please do. It is a great hangout for kids at the rear of Conversations Cafe and the basement includes ping pong, foosball, pool (no not a swimming pool) as well as other activities to provide local kids with somewhere to call their own. There is no admission for the kids and owner Deb Dueck and her team do their best to make things extremely economical for all involved. Simply, they are doing something great for the community and are worthy of time and any support you can offer. Plus they put on a great spaghetti dinner, so you cannot go wrong. See you there!

Hydro asset sale a mistake: reader Dear Editor, Many of us were shocked to learn of the sale of ALL of the Town’s NRBN shares (25%) to Energy Services Niagara Inc., an affiliate of Niagara on the Lake Hydro, and Niagara Falls Hydro Holding Corp. It was previously reported that only a small portion of our shares would be sold. This is a rapidly appreciating vital communications asset that not only continues to grow in value, but earns profits. As Bob Cheriton, president of Energy Services Niagara Inc., described: this opportunity was one our shareholders couldn’t pass up. He said Grimsby had decided some time ago they were interested in exiting their investment opportunity and Niagara Falls and Niagara-onthe-Lake saw tremendous upside. Yes, fibre communications in-

frastructure requires constant investment to build out and ‘light up’ but it is the foundation for communications (wireless networks need fibre backbones) now and in the future. Business and industry look for local fibre communication services as a vital aspect of where they will locate and expand. As a 25 per cent shareholder, the Town would only have had to invest one quarter of this infrastructure build-out cost in the future, and that investment would pay off with increased valuation and profits. This opportunity has now been lost. Considering the state of escalating debt that we, the Grimsby taxpayers have to bear with the biodigester, CoGen and missing dividends from Grimsby Power, selling this important asset is short sighted to say the least.
