Tim Hortons chose the Main Street East location, owned by Larry Thornley and managed by his daughter Nicole, as the launching point for its second annual Warm
Wishes campaign – much to the delight of staff, regulars and tourists alike. A small army of workers overhauled the location from 5 p.m. Sunday night to be ready for business at 5 a.m. on Monday, redecorating it as a snow-covered log cabin. The effect on visitors was remarkable.
“We closed at 9 p.m. that night,” said Larry. “People were still lined up out to the sidewalk. Kids were trying to make snow angels on the fake snow. It was an incredible scene all day.” While customers enjoyed complimentary hot beverages all day, many took the time to fill out a form See TIMS, Page 3

Grimsby Chamber names nominees While Grimsby & District Chamber of Commerce’s business of the year award will be handed out next week, a couple of major awards have been announced. The 2015 Outstanding Customer Service award goes to Jamie Stevens of Stevens Auto Electric & Machine, while the Director’s Award, going to a not-for-profit ogranization, goes to Grimsby Firefighters Association. Finalists for the Business of The Year are CanWeb Printing, Handling Specialty and NRB Inc. For CanWeb, which has been successful for 23 years, the nomination was a surprise. “What a privilege just to be considered,” said Liz Holinaty, whose husband Garry, along with Mike Melitzer make the place go. “It is thanks to our loyal clients, but mostly to the best people in the world who work with us
on a daily basis - our employees.” For NRB and its 100 full-time employees, president Bob McNeil said the recognition is appreciated. “Recognition by our hometown business community is a very nice endorsement of why we have enjoyed our relationships with so many community based charities and groups and we look forward to continuing that association,” said McNeil.
Tom Beach, president of Handling Specialty, also noted his staff’s contribution. “It is a testament to the staff of Handling Specialty that recently we celebrated our 50th year in business, and now receive this exciting nomination for Business Excellence in Grimsby,” Beach said. West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce has launched is second annual Toonie Toy Drive across the township. “It was really well recieved last year,” said Chamber president Ivan Carruthers. “Last year we had the glass milk jars in 30 locations across West Lincoln. This year it has doubled to 60 spots.” Anyone wanting to contribute can drop a toonie in any of the jars around
the community but visitors to Saturday, Nov. 28 Smithville Santa Claus Parade can also bring their toonie there as volunteers will be walking the parade route. Last year, $2,500 was raised in the event’s first year. This year the goal is $5,000. Parade chair Dave Willis added that everything in on track for the parade, noting 13 bands will participate including the Burlington Teen Tour Band.

Niagara Region Wind Corporation, now FWRN LP (the “Proponent”), are engaging in a renewable energy project for which a Renewable Energy Approval (“REA”) was issued by the Ministry of the Environment (now the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change) on November 21, 2014. Project Description The Project is located within the Townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet and the Town of Lincoln in the Niagara Region and Haldimand County in Southern Ontario. The Project will consist of 77 wind turbine generators, step-up transformer, electrical collector lines, a transmission line, two transformer substations, turbine access roads and construction staging areas. The Project will have a total maximum nameplate capacity of up to 230 MW. Construction of Underground Transmission Line Infrastructure Installation of underground transmission line infrastructure is expected to begin on December 1, 2015, starting just north of Walker Road and Philip to Mountainview Road to the interconnect (4720 Mountainview Road). Activities
will include asphalt cutting and removal, trench excavation, conduit installation, concrete placement, vault installation, backfill, and compaction and road remediation. These activities are described in detail in the REA technical reports found on the Project website: www.nrwf.ca. Construction activities are expected to last approximately 16 months. WLM Auxiliary plans colourful fundraiser The lobby at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital will be a colourful place to be next week, Nov. 27-28, when the auxiliary takes it over for its annual poinsettia sale. From 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on both days, WLM Auxiliary volunteers will be on hand to
help people choose among the variety available, which will include both 6-inch and 8-inch pots, as well as red, pink and white colour. “Sobkowich Greenhouses is providing the poinsettias again this year, and they look amazing,” said Auxiliary
president Marlene Morais. The foil-wrapped plants can be picked up as singles or can be ordered in larger quantities as gifts or to decorate offices. The cost is the same as last year, $10 for the 6-inch and $18 for the 8-inch.

that a late fall storm almost claimed the Weyburn. The Canada Steamship Lines package freighter had a load of steel plate, building materials and cases of soap when the cargo shifted on Nov. 25, 1950. Weyburn, on a voyage from Hamilton and Toronto to Montreal developed a 45 degree list and almost capsized.
The Captain moved the water in the ballast tanks to bring the list back to 40 degrees but the engine room crew were up to their waist as they shoveled coal to maintain steam. Two other freighters stood by but the listing ship returned to the safety of Toronto Bay and, after tying up, workers were able to stabilize the ship.

FLEMING, Thomas Shillington
Peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at Juravinski Hospital on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the age of 58. Tom will be deeply missed by his wife, Jo-Anne; son, Andrew; daughter, Rachel and her husband Chris Buckborough and their three precious children, Jacob, Bryson and Jaxon; Mother, Val; Sister, Peggy Stirman and husband, Greg; brothers, A.D. and his wife Vernah, John and his wife Glynnis and Andy and his wife Tammy; and extended family and friends. Predeceased by his loving father, Arthur Fleming. Tom lived life to the fullest. He was active for many years in the Poultry Industry and in 2014 received the annual lifetime award from the Canadian Hatchery Federation. He was a lifelong member of the Beamsville Church of Christ and was appreciated for his gift of song leading. Tom volunteered for 20 years as a firefighter for Lincoln District 1 and enjoyed many friendships with fellow firefighters over the years. He loved sports, spending time refereeing hockey and playing baseball and golf. Tom will always be remembered for his love of people and life. A celebration of Tom’s life will take place on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Beamsville Church of Christ at 4900 John Street at 1:00 pm. Bartlett crossing makes most sense Generally, where there is regional smoke, there is fire. So when it was noted in the Grimsby Public Works Committee minutes that Niagara Region is turning its Niagara Escarpment crossing focus on Bartlett Road, it really should come as no surprise to anyone. It is the most logical choice for many reasons not the least of which the whole Bartlett interchange was constructed solely for that purpose. It makes no sense for anyone to ignore that and the fact Grimsby has chosen to build it up with residential and institutional development in recent years is unfortunate. Where the LHIN is now should have had a gas station/Tim Hortons on it, but council allowed residents in the neighbourhood to pressure things that away. Yes, there would be issues further up Park Road, but it is still the best alternative. That said, Victoria Avenue should not be ignored and all the traffic calming measures, medians, flower beds et al should not impact Victoria sharing its truck traffic load. This issue has kicked around for decades and won’t likely see a project start in the next 20 years, but at least Region is looking at the issue. M.W.
Christmas comes to Main East Tim’s It is hard to believe that a coffee shop could conjure fandom in the manner of Mickey Mouse but, somehow, Tim Hortons has managed to achieve that kind of status in our lives. One could say they are a Mickey Mouse operation and have it be a very good thing: nothing like Wayne Gretzky’s famous New Jersey Devils quote. Bright and early Monday morning, actually it was still pitch black, the Tim’s team at Grimsby’s Main Street East location took the wrapping off a very special gift not just to the community but to the Thornley family – owners Larry Thornley and his wife Nicole, as well as their daughter Nicole (the latter two are Nic squared) who manages that location. The gift? Tim Hortons corporate chose their store as the sole location of all the 3,600-ish outlets from across Canada to be the launching pad for the company’s second annual Warm Wishes Campaign. The campaign is a bit of a pay it forward style program which allows Tims to do a nice deed for someone who gets a warm wish submitted at the launch. As well, the company will ante up $5,000 per week leading up to Christmas for those submitting stories about people in their communities across the country, with those funds going to the charity of the story subject’s choice. Pretty nice, eh? But all that is only part of the story. First, let’s deal with day of. Folks much older than I,
MIKE WILLISCRAFT and presumably more mature (which wouldn’t take much) were wide-eyed and giddy at the make-over their Timmy’s got since 5 p.m. Sunday night....the whole place was ready to rock at 5 a.m. Monday. Yes, hot drinks were free all day for those who signed a waiver and entered the Timbit wonderland, but the decorations inside and out, the fireplace, the switched out cushy leather armchairs and large family style wooden kitchen table were all excellent touches: Disney-esque really, very well done! But what was it about the snow? Rolls and rolls of soft cotton fabric rolled out across the lawn and covering the roof made for a scene on an unusually warm, 19-degree November day which made the whole thing stand out even more. It was a remarkable scene. Dozens of people were circling the building shooting photos throughout the day. Kids were playing on the surface like it was real thing. As I was leaving, one couple set up a photo with the wife lying on her side with a tray of coffee in front. They were on the east
side of the building right near the back because they didn’t want anyone to see them acting with child-like wonderment, but they could not see that others were doing the same thing around front. It was a Christmas atmosphere....and I have not even gotten to all the nice deeds they did around town, but I will single out one, the very nice haul sent over to FORT, Foundation of Resources for Teens. They received a bunch of board games, a new TV and video game system. That is just super for a group that can always use a push. Last but not least, the Thornleys, which operate the four Tim’s in Grimsby. It must be noted that Larry is quick to point out that Nicole runs the Main East location and, he says, deserves all the credit for that spot being chosen. That said, long before Nicole was on the scene Larry was doing his thing for the community. I can’t tell you how many meetings I have been at, events I’ve taken photos at, where someone says, “And coffee and donuts were provided by Tim Hortons”. Thing is, you never hear, “Coffee and donuts were provided by the Thornleys and their team”. And what I have always appreciated about Larry is he is not the kind of guy to jump up and down and say, “look at me, look at what I did”. For that reason alone I offer Larry et al my warm wishes and congratulations on a job well done and for bringing such positive acclaim to our community.

Carolyn Mullins; Mayor Bob Bentely and former Grimsby Energy CEO Robert Hattin) Dear Editor, As a Town of Grimsby taxpayer, I am concerned about the biodigester project’s risks, costs and fundamental viability that I and my fellow Grimsby taxpayers are going to be responsible for. While this e-mail is directed to all of you, I am asking you, Mr. Detenbeck, to be THE responder to these questions, as you are the CEO of Grimsby Energy, & the biodigester project manager. However, I welcome comments & input from all of you. 1. The NewsNow questions proposed by Mr. Hattin & other taxpayers along with the newspaper editor, appeared worthy of answers, some of which have not been forthcoming. Mr. Detenbeck, did you feel it was considerate & respectful to the taxpayers to report that your board of directors deemed it would “waste time”? As CEO of Grimsby Energy, (owned by the Town of Grimsby and funded by us), do you consider, in retrospect, that this was an appropriate response? 2. In reviewing information on biodigesters, this comment was made by a prominent provider of the technology in Canada: Canadian Bio-Digester Report http://www.agannex.com/energy/ canadian-bio-digester-report “Energy recovery alone is rarely enough to cover capital and operation costs of digesters,” Bio-Terre chief operating officer Elise Villeneuvecsays. “Financially viable projects require a combination of tipping fees, energy recovery with a good tariff and fertilizer revenue. The perceived value of digestate is currently low (it’s often not worth anything), but we hope that it will increase.” If energy recovery is not likely to be profitable, unless paid for at an inflat-

The Grimsby Energy website http:// www.grimsbyenergy.com has shown for some time now, that it is still “under construction” with a countdown of 100 days, however the ‘clock’ is not ticking down. I understand you were in the computer technology industry previously – are you not able to create a web site with the free tools that are available today, or can you not retain a low cost website designer that can do this in short order? Don’t you feel that it is important to have a website up & running to at least answer taxpayer’s FAQs? 5. I understand from your Linkedin profile that you are not an engineer & have most of your education & experience in the computer technology field. Yet, you have hired yourself and are being paid a fee to be the project manager for this complex, costly & engineering intensive project. Did you send out an RFP to the consulting engineering community requiring experience managing large waste management infrastructure construction & implementation projects? I know there are some - could you please send a copy of that RFP to me? 6. The project was supposed to be up & running a month ago. I understand we may be liable for penalties under the terms of the FIT program. You have stated there is still no projected start-up date at this time & winter weather is approaching. Do you feel the taxpayers who
fund your salary, benefits and project management fees, should be satisfied with your performance as project manager? 7. Mayor Bentley has said that this biodigester will produce energy 365 days a year. Is there no downtime allocation for maintenance & repairs over the 20 year period, which is many years past its actual life expectancy? 8. The prime output of a biodigester is methane gas which is toxic & potentially explosive. Could you please provide a copy of the liability insurance contract that you have in place showing the conditions, insurability cap, and the annual premium required for this coverage? 9. Will you be able to provide a guarantee to purchasers of the digestate that there are no harmful elements left in the residue? 10. Why is two weeks notice required for a Town Council member to attend GE board meetings? Could it be to give you time to advise your board members what not to say to the Town Council members after controversial issues are discussed amongst yourselves? I look forward, Mr. Detenbeck to receiving your responses to these questions as soon as possible. Please don’t bother to forward this to your ‘communications director’, Tony Quirk, to respond as this will be viewed and publicized as a further attempt to distance yourself from responsibility for this project. As Finance Committee Chair Carolyn Mullins has stated, “obtaining information from Hydro has been difficult.” Mr. Detenbeck, consider that it is NOT your time that is being wasted, as you are being paid to respond to & clarify legitimate questions.
