Grimsby, West Lincoln minor hockey
Amalgamation vote next Thursday Grimsby and West Lincoln minor hockey associations may take one step closer to amalgamation next week. After years of consideration, meetings and surveys, a vote will be held next Thursday to determine the future course for the two storied organizations. Initially the organiza-
tions considered a threeway merging but Lincoln Minor Hockey opted out of that possible plan in Fall 2013. “Our thoughts are that by joining together we can strengthen both associations. Our increased numbers will allow us to field Rep teams at all levels and have larger num-
bers for our house league teams. In short, it means increased opportunities for our members to play at a level best suited for each and every player,” noted Karen Whattam in a communication to WLMHA members. GMHA president Blair Gillis agreed. “It’s about the future
and doing what is best for the kids in our area,” he said. The voting will be conducted at Grimsby and West Lincoln town halls from 5-10 p.m. Next steps will be determined after the vote but a positive amalgamation vote would usher it in for the 2015-2016 season.

New dental office polished, ready Growing and expanding into his own building was always something Dr. Dan Dimtsis hoped for in his dental career. That hope officially came to fruition last week with the grand opening of his new Main Street East office, adjacent to the Grimsby Mews Plaza. “It’s a great spot and everything worked out really nice. We are very happy with it and judging by feedback, others are very pleased with
the building as well,� said Dr. Dan, as most people know him. One of the things he wanted to ensure was taken care of with new facility was parking. “Parking, as we know, is a treasure in Grimsby. We have ample parking,� he noted. As for the building itself, he was looking for something unique, but not over the top. “I wanted to make sure it was a design that would still look
good in 20 years. I worked with (Town of Grimsby planner) Michael Seaman and came up with this modern, but timeless style,� said Dr. Dan. It was also important to him to not move too far from his first office, which was in the Orchardview Plaza
since 2005. “I would not have moved more than one kilometer away, so this was perfect,� he noted. “I would also like to thank my staff for being with me through the move. It was a huge once in a lifetime expericence.�

Spicy pizza earns fourth at national competition
Tony Macri and his Calabrese pizza earned a fourth place finish in a national competition at the Canadian Pizza Show.
Cibo Osteria owner/ chef Tony Macri was rolling in dough last month, pizza dough. Macri was one of 13 entrants in the pizza Chef of The Year competition at the Canadian Pizza Show in Toronto. When the mozzarella settled, he emerged with a fourth place finish with his Southern Italy inspired Calabrese pizza, which included spicy sausage, green and black olives, and fresh mozzarella cheese. “They put you at a work station right in front of everyone. It was a bit nerve wracking,” said Macri. “You had to supply
a written submission to be chosen to compete. We had to make two pizzas in 20 minutes and submit one. No do-overs. Competition was tough.” “One of the judges said I would have placed higher but my pizza was a bit too spicy.”

By Skip Gillham For NewsNow Pete Thompson, long time Beamsville DSS teacher and coach passed away in late October, in Duncan, British Columbia, at the age of 75. Pete spent his teaching career in Niagara while living in Grimsby and later Vineland Station. He was very active coaching in the community as well as at the high school first with football and then for many successful years in cross country running. He coached hockey with Tom Clark at BDSS. He was also a distance runner who competed in New York and Ontario and once ran in the Cana-
dian Cross Country championships. He coached local minor hockey and helped out at the St. Catharines Boxing Club. Pete taught English, Math and History but always emphasized imparting life skills and qualities that could produce success for his students. He always enjoyed hearing from former students. When Pete retired in 1994, he did some volunteer work with a minor league baseball team in Welland. This gave him a connection that led to the opportunity to join the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league team in Stockton, California, where he was their clubhouse man-
Pete Thompson ager. He then joined the Oakland Athletics team in Visalia, California, in a similar capacity. One of the highlights was taking care of Baseball Hall of Fame legend Tom Lasorda when the latter visited Stockton on behalf of the parent Dodgers. He also developed a close friendship with minor league pitcher Barry Zito in Visalia and the latter was a three-
time All Star and won the Cy Young Trophy as the best pitcher in the American League in 2002. After leaving baseball, Pete returned to Canada and lived in the west as he loved to ski. He was predeceased by his first wife Marsha and leaves behind his children Joseph in Fonthill, Tim in Grimsby, Cathy in Calgary, Chris in Smithville, Matt in St. Catharines, his wife Lily and five grandchildren. A funeral service was held in BC and a celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at his son Tim’s house at 2 Highland Drive, Grimsby. Friends can come and go from 2-6 p.m.

The offficial dedication of the Steve McDonnell Leash Free Dog Park is set for Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. The park is located on Lake Street, near Baker Road. The park is being named in honour of Steve McDonnell, a very familiar face in Grimsby often seen walking his Guide Dogs trainees all throughout town. Steve would always bring the
dogs to a variety of community facilities and he would stop and greet residents with the dogs. The first official leash free dog park in Grimsby is being dedicated to Steve, in consideration of his significant community contribution. The community dog park opened in September 2013. Countdown on for Santa Claus parade The countdown is on to the Grimsby Santa Claus Parade. The twilight parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 from town hall and will end at Ontario Street. Roads will be closed from 4-7 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help out as parade road marshals and walking “characters” are needed. Remember to bring along food donations for the Grimsby Firefighters Association Food Drive. Firefighters will be walking the parade route near the start of the parade to collect the bags. Help

They are Grimsby’s best of the best in business for 2014 and they will be honoured at an awards banquet set for next Wednesday, Nov. 26. From criteria that included innovation, customer service, and entrepreneurship, the field was narrowed to four. Grimsby Minor Hockey Association clubs have enjoyed a lot of sweet victories over the years, perhaps none sweeter than the organization’s more recent win: Grimsby & District Chamber of Commerce Director’s Award for Not-ForProfit groups. “It was a tremendous surprise,” said GMHA president Blair Gillis, “But one we are very appreciative of for sure.” As with most community groups, a dedicated roster of volunteers which make the whole operation run and Gillis said GMHA is no different. “We could not do

Station One has been named the Chambers’ Business Awards of Excellence winner in the Over 10 employee category. “It is quite an honour,” said co-owner Laurie Didyk-Mindorff. Having opened just over one ago, Aug. 21, 2013, Station One proved to be an instant hit with customers. “We’re tried to do things differently
with our fresh made, in-house baked goods and unique atmosphere,” said Didyk-Mindorff. But it is attention to detail and adjustments which the fledgling operation has already undertaken that may be part of writing the hot spot’s success story. “As we got busier, we recognized we needed more counter space to be more efficient, so we added some. Customer service is very important to us,” said Didyk-Mindorff. Last fall, beer and wine sales were added, along with extended evening

Beans of a Tree: turning t-discs into trees and more For coffee lovers, there is nothing quite like the aroma of a pot freshly brewing. Or in the case of those using a single-serving coffee maker, such as a Tassimo, the sweet scent emanating from their favourite mug as it fills. They are convenient and come in a multitude of flavours but they also bring with them a pile of tiny plastic cups. Beans of a Tree in Grimsby has turned those tiny cups into trees – so to speak. “We collect the discs and send
them away for recycling,� said owner Kelly Zdriluk. “The recycling company pays a penny or two per disc and we donate the money to a local group.� The company, called TerraCycle, take the packaging and recycles them into eco-friendly products such as plastic garbage containers, watering cans and benches. In 2013, the cash return went to Our Lady of Fatima School which in turn used the money to purchase and plant trees. “The school collected 5,000 discs,� said Zdriluk. Throughout 2014, the coffee shop has been collecting disc for McNally House hospice. “Our goal was to collect 20,000 discs which we have exceeded but we will continue right to the end of the year to collect.� They will chose a different charity next year. There is no need to empty the t-disc, just bring them in. Beans of a Tree has been open for just over two years. It carries more than 400 varieties of coffee, as well as tea and hot chocolate. There is giftware as well, such as mugs and other times for the kitchen, both practical and decorative. They also carry Sodastream and carbonators for the popular soda pop maker. Beans of a Tree is located at 1 Main St., E right at the corner of Ontario Street.

The ship had 400 tons of Bunker C. fuel for the trip from Everett, WA to Russia. The potential for pollution was a major concern. The Canadian Coast Guard responded and were able to get a tow line connected and pull the powerless freighter farther out to sea. Two other Coast Guard ves-

Road trip will take bicycles, supplies to Central American By Katherine Grant NewsNow Early next spring as the rest of us are happily putting away our snow shovels, a group of area residents will be preparing to embark on an adventure that will carry them across the borders of at least four countries and well into Central America. Beamsville resident Suzy Campbell is the driving force behind the trip, the focus of which is caring for the youngest citizens of Masaya, Nicaragua. In the past few months, Campbell and many other volunteers – with the support of Grimsby’s St Andrew’s Anglican Church and the Grimsby Benevolent Fund – have been packing a cube van to the roof with bicycles, tools, clothes and household goods. Campbell’s driveway is where this journey will begin. “We are giving ourselves 22 days to make the drive,” she said of the 6,000 km trip. This is a tale about the future of Masaya’s young students, their school and the heart of a community. Campbell has been making an annual trip to Nicaragua for about 10 years. This is the first time she will be driving there. “These people are full of joy although they have so little,” said Campbell. Nicaragua is said to be the second poorest country in the Americas after Haiti. School attendance is not compulsory so encouraging students to attend and stay in school and keeping them focused is a challenge. In addition there is a cost which many families simply

By raising money through an annual gala evening, donations and sponsorships, the organization has been able to make a substantial difference to the school and local community. “The school is becoming a focal point within the local community,” said Gillian Wood, one of the volunteers. Wood is planning to make her third trip this spring. She will be among the volunteers who are flying down. “On our previous visits we installed a 10,000 litre water tank to ensure a supply of water,

refurbished an ailing electrical system, built a storage shed for dry food, repaired and rebuilt playground and sports equipment, built a new outdoor kitchen where hot food is provided to all students each day and fenced off and dug out a garden where the students can grow some of their own food,” said Wood. The school offers an opportunity to improve the lives of the children, giving them a chance to learn and to go on to a higher education, she added. Until recently this has only been a distant hope. This year saw the first student qualify for public university. Campbell said the school’s principal has identified computer education as essential for the future of the students. A computer classroom was built by the group in 2014. “In April 2015 we will install air conditioning, furnish and get computers for the classroom. The state has promised a computer teacher,” said Wood. Volunteers are always needed to work with the Masaya community to build, paint and do general labour. “I became a master cement mixer,” laughed Wood. Each volunteer is expected to raise their own airfare and expense money. “Since we pay all our own expenses, every dollar raised or donated goes to the project,” said Campbell. Firefighters for a day The Grimsby Fire Department made good on the Fire Prevention Week contest when two local students were chosen to be a firefighter for a day. The winners, Nathan Allan and Kyle Gratton, were treated to a ride to and from school in a fire truck, lunch and a tour of the fire hall. Local students were asked to design a home fire-escape plan, winners were chosen by random draw. Time to catch up on odds and ends Been a lot of major issues of late and the election ate up a ton of space for a month, so time for some housekeeping. ****** The date has been set by my friends at the Grimsby Fire Department for circulation of the special Christmas food drive bags for their annual program. They will be inserted in Dec. 4 edition of NewsNow, just prior to the Grimsby Santa Claus Parade. If you are new to town, the idea is you will fill the bag with non-perishable food items and bring the bag to the parade. Firefighters will be walking the route and filling their float with the contributions. Watch next week’s edition for full story on the firefighter’s food drive, which contributes to Grimsby Benevolent Fund’s Christmas Hamper Program. ******* Hat Trick Hockey: we ended up with more than 550 entries this year, up about 20 per cent. The influx pushed the inputting of all the entries back another week but we expect to have our first set of standings – and prize winners – for next week’s edition. ******* I had an opportunity to check out Dr. Dan Dimtsis’ new digs on Main Street West last Thursday night when he hosted his open house. Nice job! Cool design, lots of parking, very nice

Having followed this process since it came up in earnest in 2012, it is the right thing to do for the future of the organizations involved. Better use of facility time, more opportunity for youngsters involved: it seems like a good thing. I will not be a voter, but they know I would be glad to help in any way possible. No matter which way the vote goes, and it is generally expected to pass, good luck to the new group! *******
The Grimsby & District Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards gala is next week. You will see features on this year’s winners on Page 12-13 of this week’s edition to preview the event. If you are really lucky in the business world, you may win one of these awards. There are a lot of great businesses out there and very respectable business owners who work very long hours and give generously to their communities. This type of recognition means a great deal. I was fortunate enough to win a Lincoln Chamber Award MANY years ago as well as Niagara Entrepreneur of The Year Award. I have won dozens of industry awards, too, but none more sweet than those won when your local peers deem you worthy. Congratulations to the winners. You are all doing really good things. Keep up the great work! ******* The Taste of Our Town fundraiser for the new Beamsville arena/library complex wrapped up – for me – last weekend. We used a prize for a B&B stay at Atherton House we won in the silent auction from the May event. Two thumbs way up for Pat Atherton. We treated the weekend, with Wrapped Up mixed in, as a mini-vacation. It was awesome. Thanks, Pat, you were an excellent host and new spa facilities were top drawer.
