The next meeting is set for Beamsville on Dec. 15 and Grimsby’s is set for Jan. 26.

NWG candidates have their say Peculiarities which have been sprinkled throughout the Niagara West Glanbrook byelection process continued Monday night as Lincoln Chamber of Commerce hosted an allcandidates night. Seven of the nine candidates running for the Queen’s Park seat vacated when Tim Hudak resigned after 21 years in office were on hand. It’s not often one candidate in an election actively campaigns for one of their opponents, but that was
exactly what happened in front of a standing room only crowd. Queenie Yu, leader of the Stop the New Sex Ed Agenda party, said she was running in the byelection not necessarily to become an MPP but to bring attention to the sex ed curriculum issue as well as Bill 28, which is designed to change the “Children’s Law Reform Act, the Vital Statistics Act and various other acts by removing the terms “mother” and “father”.
Yu answered almost every question - on issues from hydro rates to affordable housing - by referencing the two issues her party is focused on, and often praised Ontario PC candidate Sam Oosterhoff’s responses. “I hope Sam is elected,” said Yu in her closing remarks before speaking directly to Oosterhoff urging him to oppose Bill 28 which she says is an attack on families and then urging voters to support him at the polls on Nov. 17.
Oosterhoof, a social conservative who said he was clear on his views during his campaign to become the PC candidate, told the crowd he is “100 per cent” pro-life when the candidates were asked their views on abortion and the sex education curriculum. “I’ve done my best to be clear” on the sex education issue, said Oosterhoof, explaining children need clear and comprehensive education that is relevant to the world they live in See MEETING, Page 2

NDP candidate Mike Thomas said he supported the updated curriculum adding one of the problems with the new curriculum is that it was “shoved down the throats” of parents, who should have been consulted. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not to their own facts,” said Liberal candidate Vickey Ringuette, in response to repeated criticism of her party on every issue. She noted the Kathleen Wynne government did consult parents and health organizations in creating the updated curriculum. Ringuette’s comment that Ontario’s education system is “fantastic” drew chuckles from the crowd, while her opponents criticized the Wynne government for cuts to education. Thomas said education in Ontario is not funded properly while Oosterhoff referenced recent EQAO results that show half of Grade 6 students in the province are below the provincial benchmark for math. Both noted that children are the future of the province and their education is too important to cut. None of the candidates, however, answered the specific question on educa-

Grimsby council considers $50K spend for Nelles/Main study After a lengthy discussion and several about-faces, Grimsby council approved to spend up to $50,000 for a “hospital neighbourhood study” on Monday night. The issue arose at the Oct. 25 Planning Committee meeting when Michael Seaman, the town’s director of planning, suggested conducting a study would help council. The area included in the study is Main Street East between Nelles Road and eastern edge of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s land. Seaman explained the study, once in place, would allow council to have more control over how development unfolds in the area. The motion at committee, which started out with an $80,000 price tag, was whittled down to $50,000 by extracting some components, noted Seaman, but it was still defeated. At council Monday, several points were jockeyed to create something council would pass. Seaman noted Niagara Region had just notified the Town that
possible 50 per cent grant may be available, so members of council were willing to split costs and spend $25,000. But Reg Coun. Tony Quirk noted the Town would not likely be eligible for funds if the scaled-back proposal was used since key criteria would be left out. So a new motion was rejigged a third time recognizing the need for an $80,000 spend with the likely 50 per cent funding from Niagara Region being part of the mix. With this scenario, council voted to proceed with the proposal capping the town’s contribution to $50,000. Ald. Dave Kadwell, the only member of council to oppose the motion, noted proceeding to spend that much money in an area with one property to be developed made no sense. “That area is all established and there is only the one property in that area. I can’t see supporting this,” said Kadwell.

Truck size restrictions put in place for Grimsby In an attempt to control the size of trucks using some mountain accesses the Town of Grimsby has reduced size limits in its heavy truck by-law. The measure is not without its detractors, however, at both ends of the scale. Some residents would like to see more policing and restrictions - if not outright bans, - while local businesses who use smaller trucks as part of their day to day operation are caught up in the process. Robert Puddicombe of Winona Concrete address the Public Works Committee Oct. 18 noting Woolverton Road (and Park Road) being closed to trucks without consultation with the impacted local businesses which need these roads for trucking, and the move the unjustified desire of a few, which adversely affects an entire industry. He told LeRoux to develop a report showing his time expenditure and the Town may consider hiring a traffic specialist.

FAVORITE BEAN SOUP INGREDIENTS • 1 lb mild Italian sausage • 2 smoked pork hocks or 2-3 cups cubed ham • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed • 2 onions, diced • 5 carrots, diced • 1 green pepper, chopped • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley • 3 14-oz cans beans (kidney, Roma, mixed) • 14 oz can tomato sauce • 28 oz can tomatoes, chopped or crushed • 1-2 tsp salt • 1 tsp black pepper • 2 bay leaves •1 tsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 garlic cloves, minced fine •1 tsp dried basil or oregano DIRECTIONS Cut sausage into bite-sized pieces. Skin pork hocks and remove excess fat, if using. Brown sausage and pork in large soup pot and drain any fat accumulated. Add all other ingredients and enough water to cover. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for approx. 2-3 hours. Remove pork hocks and cut meat into pieces and return to soup. Serve hot with crusty bread. Makes 8-10 servings.

For Bierk, the curtain photographs represent a serious dichotomy of aesthetic beauty and emotional pain. They force him to confront the hospital environment, in which loved ones have been both nurtured and passed away; he is both comforted and haunted by the complexity of their meanings.

Remembrance Day, 70th Anniversary set A special ceremony is planned for Smithville Legion’s recognition of Remembrance Day tomorrow (Friday), says spokesman Ken Hunter. As is tradition, the ceremony will start at 10:30 a.m. at the cenotaph but added to the proceedings will be the 130-plus voices of the John Calvin School choir. “We’re very excited to have them as part of the day,” said Hunter. As well, the Grimsby Pipe Band will be part of the program. “After the ceremony is wrapped up, we will be hosting a lunch in the Legion in the upstairs hall. That will be about 11:30 a.m.,” noted Hunter. The Legion is known for its many events and stalwart support of the community over its 70-year existence. Whether it is the breakfasts, wing nights, theme dinners, dances, you name it, Hunter said the organization is proud to serve the community and its members.

Grimsby Remembrance services set for Friday Grimsby’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 127 will host its Remembrance Day ceremony tomorrow (Friday) starting at 10:45 a.m.
The service will be held at the cenotaph, located on the lawn of Grimsby Museum, 6 Murray St. Following the ceremony, lunch will be hosted at the Legion, 233 Elizabeth St.
The trenches of Vimy Ridge show the proximity - about 100 yards of “no man’s land” between enemy lines. German forces were in the tree line. Next year, 2017, will mark the 100th anniversary of Canada’s most celebrated military victory.

Habitat For Humanity breaks ground on new home
Habitat for Humanity Niagara kicked off a new home build in Grimsby last month. With a $75,000 donation from John Deere Foundation and $10,000 committed from Grimsby Rotary @ Noon, HHN will need to fundraise $135,000 for the project. Habitat officials thanked Mayor Bob Bentley for connecting them with David Engel of Dorchester Homes who, together with his mother Vera Engel Ricer, made a major donation in memory of Vera’s husband, Sam Ricer of Ricenberg Developments. Thanks to 1st Beamsville Scouts Not many people or organizations would think, “Hey, let’s plan a work party and go clean up the MTO parking lot area out by the QEW in Beamsville!” And if they did, it just would not be that high on anyone’s priority list. But the 1st Beamsville Scouts did just that. Good for them! Since the advent of GO bus service making regular stops out there, it is not uncommon to see pedestrians shuffling down that stretch of service road to get to the parking area. With ample fast food outlets nearby, one can be sure there is a lot more garbage in the area as people wait for their transportation to arrive. This act is not the first time or unusual for this group. Their ongoing efforts are appreciated. M.W.
All-candidates served great purpose A shout out to two ladies who put in a lot of hustle to make an event go extremely well when it had every chance to go south - Lincoln Chamber executive director Lisa Pare and membership coordinator Denise Potter. The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce has a longstanding tradition of hosting all-candidates evenings for all levels of politics. To my recollection, we have never missed one and I have been involved in the chamber directly or covered their events for more than 20 years. When the writ was dropped for the Nov. 17 byelection, I had a quick chat with Lisa as I didn’t want to have the one we miss be on my watch as president. That would just be bad form. A quick look at the calendar showed really just one date which could be both promoted and covered by all local media and that was Monday night. Apologies to local councils who traditionally meeting on first Mondays of the month, but the date had to be set to get as much information into the public’s hands before the vote. That was the name of the game. With nine registered candidates and a host of contentious issues Twenty Valley Golf & Country Club’s facility had every right to be a powder keg. What transpired was an excellent evening of engaged discussion which I really hope achieved its goal, to inform the public. Just about everything was booked for Nov. 7
MIKE WILLISCRAFT when we started looking and the folks at Twenty Valley really came through helping in many ways to make it a first-class event. Thanks to them! Events like that are much like weddings, if something goes wrong, few, if any, actually notice because “guests” just think that’s what the playbook called for. Having a quality moderator like John Armstrong certainly helped things, too. So thanks, John. I got to the site for the reception component, helped where I could and talked to all those in the room but then had to depart for Grimsby Town Council. Since the antics of August and the plan to slide through the creation of a new holding company - as part of a plan to streamline a cumbersome company organization, they say - in the deadest week of the year, it will be a while til I can skip a meeting. Part of their agenda, it was marked for in camera, was to discuss “an ongoing investigation respecting the municipality, a local board or a municipally controlled corporation by the Ombudsman appoint
under the Ombudsman Act”. Basically this means something regarding council, which is the shareholder of all things Niagara Power, Grimsby Energy, Grimsby Power and that whole show, is being scrutinzed for problems. We’ll see what comes of that, but there have been many, many, many instances where governance and conflict of interest have been serious issues in the long and painful process. And speaking of processes, it was very bizarre to hear council discuss - sans laughter - about their interest in “being proactive” regarding a potential $50,000 spend for a “neighbourhood” study for a small stretch of Main Street East. When things don’t make sense with this council, which is pretty much monthly, I wonder what game is afoot. To drop $50K - as Ald. Dave Kadwell duly noted - to study an area which has only one property do be developed makes no sense at all. Yes, it may give council some leverage of some sort, but as noted when it was voted down at sub-committee, the Town has its zoning bylaws and Official Plan in place. If those willing to spend that kind of money on what certainly seems like a frivolous affair - regardless of a potential regional subsidy - would simply state what it is they are truly afraid of for the old Burgess House at Nelles and Main then maybe a bonehead like myself could comprehend why spending $50K in that manner makes an iota of sense.
