I had cousins who played for the Erie Otters, Brock, and everyone was advising and providing me their thoughts.” “We were tasked with looking at this purely operationally and talking to all stakeholders. Some 50-plus hours spent on weekends and throughout the last two months analyzing this issue. It has been with Council for over a year, with staff being sent back numerous times to seek further information and further negotiate.” The communication and analysis will not stop there. “Next, and simultaneously, meet with LHMA and all the users to advise them of the approved time slots
and associated changes and engage in negotiations on the needed time slots,” said Kirkopoulos. “Staff will also continue conversations with all user groups and continue ongoing monitoring of all programming. We need to prepare for possible future growth. For Tallman, he looks forward to working with the Town and hockey fans in the community. “For about a year-anda-half, we have been busy laying the groundwork and taking the different aspects of the operation to a certain point, then finding it necessary to stop, because we didn’t have ice,” said Tallman, noting he is pleased the hurdle has been cleared. “Since the vote last night we have been overwhelmed with calls, texts, emails and various other messages of congratulations and it is very satisfying to know that the work done up until now,
is going somewhere.” Kirkopoulos noted the town will also be reviewing the relationship between Jordan Arena and the Fleming Centre in terms of developing principles which apply to both facilities. As well, he said the Town has put in its due diligence on this project. “The Town must be protected in any financial agreement it enters into, and the culture and desirability and match of any new team must also be taken into account,” said Kirkopoulos. With the agreement in place, Tallman is ready to go. “We are a new business in town so we are laying a lot of groundwork. Planning meetings will start tomorrow (Wednesday) evening. We will be looking for game night volunteers. We will be setting operational schedules, contracts, and prioritizing things that need to get done.”

Auxiliary fashion show draws 240 West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary’s “Red Wine and Lipstick” went off without a hitch last Friday. Fashions from Tous Jours, Main West Men’s Wear and Mirella’s highlighted the proceedings. Among the many models were firefighters, auxiliary volunteers, WLMH executives and doctors. “It’s difficult for someone to imagine the amount of work that goes into organizing such an event,” said Marlene Morais, president of the auxiliary.
“I credit the success of this show to the hard work of our WLMA fundraising committee, notably Theresa Cheverie, and the other auxiliary volunteers who helped out.” “We even put our student volunteers to work that night. Our 240 guests were guided through the evening by the Honourable Shirley Martin, who also shared her expertise into organizing this event.” Proceeds from the event go to pulmonary testing equipment and an echocardiogram unit.

Senator Gibson Battle of Books champs Last Thursday, Senator Gibson emerged as the champion of the Lincoln Public Library’s first ever Battle of the Books! After months of reading books from this year’s book list, students went head to head answering questions about the stories they had read. The lead changed hands each battle. Questions required students to identify book titles and authors as well as specific facts. Each team had to work together to determine answers. Students from both Twenty Valley and Senator Gibson impressed the quizmaster with their knowledge on the books they had read. Battle of the Books is hosted by the Lincoln Public Library,
organized by Great Lakes Christian High School and made possible by the support of Book Outlet, Meridian Credit Union and the Niagara
Community Foundation. Participation is open to any student educated in Lincoln. Plans are already in motion for the battle next year! In you are

Grimsby Kinsmen do 50th up right Quick: what do Denny Pyatt, Wayne Gretzky and Celine Dion have in common? They are now all Hal Rogers fellows. Pyatt was bestowed the honour Saturday night during 50th anniversary celebrations for Grimsby Kinsmen Club, of which he is a charter member. The fellowship, named in honour of the Kinsmen’s founder, is the highest honour attainable. About 140 guests took in the evening at the Mountain Ridge Community Centre. “It was a fantastic evening,” said Kin president Bruce Bond. “It really could not have gone any better.”

Martial arts gets kids healthy The 2016 YMCA Healthy Kids Survey revealed that Canadian parents acknowledge there are barriers keeping them from leading a healthy active lifestyle, including: a lack of time (44%), work/life balance (34%) and energy or motivation (28%). At the Healthy Kids Day Event in Grimsby, two local martial art facilities came together to promote training in the martial art of Jiu Jitsu as well as Boxing and Kickboxing. “We truly believe in the benefits of training in the martial arts,” said Shane Weaver owner and operator of Red Griffin Studio.

The Mavs live In a manner of speaking, the Lincoln Mavericks Hockey Club was officially born Monday night. Jeff Tallman and his wife Therese are the proud new “parents” of this endeavour. With a year-and-a-half of work behind them and plans to ice a team this fall, the Tallmans have their work cut out for them. A big piece of the puzzle was Town of Lincoln agreeing to work with the Mavs on securing the icetime it needed to launch its participation in the Greater Metro Jr. A Hockey League. Exciting stuff for local hockey fans and best of luck to all involved. M.W.
Was this the most “active” weekend ever? This past weekend really snuck up on me. Usually, those super busy weekends in the summer are well known, major events, spin-off barbecue fundraisers and events at all times of the day and night. Last weekend: fashion show, Kinsmen 50th dinner, McNally House Walk for Hospice, Jordan Lions Swap Meet and Car Show, Wayzgoose, West Lincoln Home Show, United Mennonite Home craft sale, Grimsby Tennis Club’s opening and even more... It amazes me how much stuff goes on around here and I have been doing this for a very long time. This weekend, when one considers the variety of events, may have been the best weekend I’ve seen in 20-plus years working the West Niagara beat. When you can check off everyone from gear heads to fashionistas and heritage printers to do-it-yourselfers there was definitely something for everyone. The whole thing got kind of kicked off with a super unique happening when efforts started to x-ray the entire yard of Jordan Museum. About 10 days is what it will take to cover most of the yard there. The technicians said they would run out of time before they run out of real estate. The notion behind the work to get an idea of where they may be unmarked graves on the site, so if any work is ever done they would know where to avoid. Over the decades, if not centuries, grave markers have disappeared in some cases. Chatting with Museum Board president Lloyd
MIKE WILLISCRAFT Haines while a demonstration was being set up, he related a typically funny story...I thought it was anyways. He said stories have been commonly told by people who attended the schoolhouse there back in the day that at recess the boys would venture over the precipice and down into the valley where, as “legend” has it, some graves eroded to over time. They would find “bones”, take them in hand and chase the schoolgirls around the yard with them. Sounds like a scene from Little House on the Prairie... That whole scene, the xraying of the yard I mean, was truly unique. covering the whole area in 10-inchwide passes is a big task but, once completed, will let know museum officials know what they have been wondering for years. Going from the past to the future, the future looks bright for the West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce’s Home and Trade Show. I popped in there Saturday and it was busy with nearly vendor having someone at their respective counters and others milling about.
Attendance came in at just over 1,000 for the two-day event, by far the best turnout in many years. That is good news for the Chamber and the community to see people coming out like that. My favourite part of the weekend was Saturday night’s Grimsby Kinsmen Club’s 50th anniversary dinner up at the old St. Mary’s Hall, now called the Mountain Ridge Community Centre. That building has seen countless celebrations in its day, none better than one. The hall was decorated with all kinds of Kin memorabilia all around and scrap books covered about a dozen tables at the back. It was the history of a half-century of Grimsby brought to life. It was a really great night! Sunday, I was looking forward to checking out some cool rides at Jordan Lions annual car show. Cool and wet weather really dampened that event unfortunately, but those Lions are a resilient bunch. They have to be if they can hang around as long as they have, just like the Kinsmen. Both these groups could use more active members to help make all the things happen which they facilitate in our community. This is true of virtually every service club. There are a lot of great causes which need time and attention out there so if you have looking to get involved, invest in your community and, most of all, have some fun, these are the guys to call.
