Grimsby sinkhole causes traffic issues By Mike Williscraft NewsNow It wasn’t internet worthy, but Grimsby had its version of a sinkhole last week on Elm Street near the bridge at the Forty Mile Creek. “This is not a sink hole in the terms
we see from the US where there are holes in the underlying bed rock which open up and swallow a house,” said Bob LeRoux, Grimsby’s director of public works. About 11 a.m. last Thursday, Town staff noticed a small hole
in the asphalt and looking inside saw a large cavern under the entire width of the pavement along the outside of the bridge, said LeRoux. “We filled the cavern with low strength concrete which will give us time to bring
in a consultant to engineer a permanent solution,” added LeRoux. Once found, one lane was closed immediately and the road was fully closed once the extent of the hold was determined. It was not reopened
until Saturday at 9:30 a.m. “Over the last 30 years I have seen a few minor sink holes in Grimsby roads but they all have been created by a hole in a pipe below,” noted LeRoux. See HOLE, Page 3

A quick response by 8 District Niagara Regional Police enabled the arrest of Hamilton teen allegedly stealing from cars while another teen was caught doing 66 kph over the speed limit in West Lincoln. Friday, April 20 at about 1:25 a.m., police responded to a call of a suspicious male in Grimsby’s east end at Bell Ave. and Park Road. Responding officers located a youth sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle. Inside the vehicle, multiple pieces of identification and personal items not in the passenger’s name were located. The young person identified that two additional males were in the vicinity on foot. The vehicle had been stolen and police suspect that there are numerous victims within the neighbourhood. The 17-year-old male has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. The search continues for the other two perpetrators. Anyone believing that their property has been entered and/or taken is requested to contact police to make an official report. Monday, at 1:25 a.m. at 20-year-old Pelham man was clocked doing 146 kph in an 80 zone on Victoria Avenue in West Lincoln. The novice driver was charged with with stunting, speeding and, being a novice driver. with having a blood alcohol concentration above zero.

They might enjoy an outing at the inaugural Family Mini-Putt to be held Saturday, June 16 at Peach King Centre. “We’ve had great success with the grown up version we’ve run for more than 20 years, so this seemed like a great way to create a family oriented event and support youth related activities,” said Kinsmen co-organizer Bruce Bond, who noted that FORT will be the recipient of any event proceeds this year. While trying to juggle a ClubWest Magazine deadline and a couple of NewsNow editions we have managed to renovate and prepare the new office thanks to the helpful hands of many. Once this edition is to bed, we will be finalizing a plethora of office details, preparing to move desks and such Thursday and possibly Friday. This is mentioned as we are not sure where if there will be any phone downtime. We will put call forward on if we see it coming so your calls may come to a staff person’s cell phone. We could have some delays in getting back to callers about anything from invoicing, ad inquiries or community event details. It will be a hodgepodge, but the good news is, by Monday we should be able to settle and take our first forward step in months. Thanks to no-guff Grandma Surviving six years with NewsNow may not seem like much when compared to the 23 years I have put in here in Niagara West, but let me you, it is mammoth. Heck, getting by the last few weeks has proven more of a challenge than the last five years combined. Just two Wednesdays ago we were about to be homeless after some mystery bylaw, which not a single property owner of the 10 I spoke to had heard of, limiting what uses can be rented to in Main Street locations reared its ugly head. We were well down the road of renting a location on Main Street, lease drawn up, utilities booked to switch over and a move-in date of April 29 set. Then my current (up to Thursday May 2, anyways) landlord comes in and tells me he was just at town hall dealing with issues related to the fire department work order - yes, the one that necessitated our moving in the first place and he was told we could not relocate on Main Street. Apparently, it matters not I have been perched on the main drag since 1997. That earns no street cred. If there is a non-conforming use, it stays with the physical address, not the business operator. While a side issue in the scheme of things, that is ridiculous, regardless of use. If you have paid your dues for decades, how and why the Town would want to zone your livelihood right out from under anyone is the most brain dead initiative imaginable. With our use as a newspaper in particular we cover many of the criteria the Town says they wanted with retail sales, printing, selling everything from event tickets to brochures, pamphlets,
MIKE WILLISCRAFT posters and other printed material...I could go on and on: deaf ears at town hall. My new landlord was ready to follow through with a minor variance just to keep the peace. In the end, he got cold feet, “I don’t want to get into an argument with city hall,” he said. With that call Wednesday, April 11, we were homeless as I had already given notice on 49 Main and the landlord had already gone down the road with a new tenant. We had the option to work out of my basement or fold. And I thought about the latter, briefly. Then the image of my 104-year-old grandmother popped into my brain. I must admit it happens with more regularity than one might imagine. She was the mental rock for our whole family right up until her passing in August of 2012. When we launched NewsNow in May of 2012 it started as a monthly. The idea was to run it that way then step up to weekly after a couple of years to bi-weekly and then after three years go to weekly. None of that transpired. Response was immediate and steady for more frequency both from readers and advertisers. In the eight years previous since
I sold what was Grimsby Lincoln News to Torstar, the publication had become a shadow of itself. In August that year we were in the planning stages of going twice a month after only a handful of editions. Since Grandma was my sounding board, my voice of reason, so she was right up speed on what was happening. After she suffered the stroke which would eventually take her from us, I was in the hospital in London to see her. She had a chance to speak with every single family member as she battled on for over a week. She was remarkable. We covered a lot of ground about the meaning of life when I got my chance to talk to her. What burned its way into my brain was the intensity of her look and the grip of her hand on my arm when she said, “Don’t take any guff from those people.” For Grandma, guff was an incredibly spicy word. The next spiciest word I ever heard her say was “dash”, usually at their hunting dogs if they did something silly in the back yard, like “that dash sucker” did this or that...so you can imagine where guff came on her linguistic scale. In that instance, she meant my corporate competition, but I will admit I have taken literary license in my brain from time to time to transfer its target to whomever or whatever I needed to at a point in time. In this case, it was Town of Grimsby. Grandma has been gone since before NewsNow got to weekly, but it is quite possible without her emphatic words we may not have survived to get to our sixth anniversary. Once again and always, thanks Grandma!

Klamer, Fluit now Harris fellows Notable Rotarians, Alice Klamer and Andrew Fluit, were recently honoured as the Rotary Club of Lincoln’s newest Paul Harris Fellows. The award named for Rotary founder, Paul Harris, recognizes individuals whose community contributions are significant. Klamer is well-known for her longstanding dedication to community near and far. Over more than 16 years, she has served with West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of Lincoln. Through her family-owned business,
Blue Sky Nursery, Klamer is a highly respected leader among her industry peers and is ever generous with sponsorships for all manner of events and causes. Fluit became a Rotarian in 2008. Since then, there is really nothing in the work of Lincoln Rotary in which Fluit has not had a hand. Fluit is distinguished as the longest serving treasurer since the club was chartered in 1997. As a professional electrical engineer and skilled handyman, he is a steadfast enabler for Lincoln Rotary projects such as stage building and set-up for annual Lamplighter Tour productions.
