Transit gets GO-ing with push east By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A $1 billion commitment to a Hamilton transit project is huge news for a GO Transit connection to Grimsby and Niagara. The announcement came Tuesday by Premier Kathleen Wynne
of a Light Rail Line as well as the extension of GO’s Lakeshore West train service to a Centennial Parkway station, which is to be in place by 2019. “It is a huge announcement for both the City of Hamilton and Region of Niaga-
ra,” said Grimsby Mayor Bob Bentley. “Commitments of GO to Centennial Parkway is critical in getting GO around the corner of the lake and traveling eastwest, with expansion into Niagara as the next step.”
The LRT aspect of the transportation package will connect McMaster University to Queenston Circle and, eventually, to Eastgate Square Mall. The provincial government will pay the full cost of the project. No timeline was
discussed beyond Stoney Creek but Grimsby Reg. Coun. Tony Quirk said first things first. “The first step in getting GO to Niagara has always been getting the Hamilton

Minister of Energy plugs into Rex Ge complaint By MIke Williscraft NewsNow Vindicated. That is how Rex Ge feels today after Ontario Minister of Energy called his case “a very significant injustice” and agreed to work with Niagara West Glanbrook MPP Tim Hudak on his official complaint to the Ontario Energy Board. The matter stems from an incident in February when Niagara Peninsula Energy cut off power to GE’s West Lincoln greenhouse after a bill for $362 went 29 days overdue. The result of the power loss froze Ge’s greenhouse contents, including all plants and the heating/watering system complete with burst pipes throughout the structure causing $150,000 in damages. During Question Period at
Queen’s Park, Hudak asked Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli if he would work with him to seek restitution for GE and develop a better system for dealing with consumer complaints. “Minister, would you agree with me that Niagara Peninsula Energy went way, way, way too far and they owe Mr. Ge compensation for the destruction of his livelihood?” asked Hudak. Acknowledging the OEB is currently reviewing Hudak’s complaint, Chiarelli agreed consumers “need a place to go with their complaints”. Hudak pressed Chiarelli to go a step further for a man who never missed a payment on his bill. “I know it’s with the OEB and the local utility, but minister,
will you join me? Tell Niagara Peninsula Energy to give their heads a shake, do the right thing and pay Mr. Ge for his damages?” asked Hudak. Chiarelli agreed. “I definitely will join him on this particular file. It is apparently a very significant injustice that has happened in this particular case... I will work with the member to try to bring this to a positive resolution,” said Chiarelli. The news for Ge was a huge boost as he struggles to make his Hwy. 20 greenhouse survive. “I am so excited. I really appreciate what Tim Hudak is trying to do for me. I know nothing is final. I am just thankful the government sees what has happened to me,” said Ge.

Grimsby resident named as LHIN board member Grimsby resident Bill Thompson has been appointed a member of the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network (HNHB LHIN). Board chair Michael Shea made the announcement, noting Thompson, a retired chartered accountant, brings with him extensive experience across a variety of sectors including health care, and the food and local wine industry. Anticipation building for 14th edition of Grimsby Author Series The Grimsby Author Series is coming up to its 14th season and it has become one of the favourite stops for Canadian authors. It is going to be an exciting season with many very interesting personalities and writers coming to Grimsby. “Some of the top names in Canadian fiction will read at the Series this upcoming season including Governor General winner Nino Ricci, Giller prize winner Elizabeth Hay, and much decorated writers Camilla Gibb, Helen Humphreys, Katherine Govier, Carrie Snyder and Robert Hough,” said Ken Boichuk, one of the organizers. “A special addition to the lineup this season is American writer Paula McLain whose last novel The Paris Wife was an international bestseller.” Veteran Canadian news anchor Kevin Newman has a very poignant new book coming out this fall about his relationship
with his son. Two-time winner of the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, Terry Fallis, called one of the kings of CanLit, will make a return appearance reading from his new book Poles Apart. Rosemary Sullivan has one of the blockbuster biographies of the new season with her revealing book about Svetlana Stalina, Joseph Stalin’s only daughter. youth. There are 115 cadets enrolled in the program. “There will be spring selections and we have chosen some music to pay tribute to our veterans, all who have served,” said Ruby Weber. There will also be show tunes and more and refreshments will be served. The show will take place at the Grimsby Seniors Centre, 18 Livingston Ave.

Three blood-covered, unconscious teenagers in one car, a fourth in the vehicle that hit them, sitting behind the wheel looking around in a daze. Smoke filled the air around the cars as students from the nearby high school gathered on the sidewalk to watch events play out. It is silent for a few moments as the smoke drifts away and then emergency personnel converge on the accident. A police cruiser comes wheeling in from the east, paramedics and firefighters from the west. Suddenly a door swings open and the driver in the second

car bolts, running down the street past the cruiser away from the carnage. A police officer is soon in pursuit. It wasn’t real. But it unfolded as if it was. “The goal of the exercise was to draw attention to the perils of drunk driving and distracted driving,” said Const. Phil Gavin, Niagara Regional Police Service media relations officer. “People think accidents only happen to other people. Students need to see the realities of what can happen.” One of the “victims” died at the scene. Grim-faced firefighters lifted her from the car and slide her into a body bag at the feet of the students. “The message was designed to be powerful and realistic,”

Firefighters and police officers addressed the students explaining what they were seeing as first responders got to work. “We have one victim who is dead and she is impeding the ability to help the survivors so we are going to treat her with dignity and take her aside and away from the accident,” said Sgt. Todd Lantz. Firefighters worked to stabilize the car, blocking the tires. They used the jaws of life to extricate the driver as a firefighter climbed into the back seat to comfort a third victim who was now conscious and screaming. They covered the
victims with tarps to protect them from broken glass as firefighters prepared to peel back the roof of the car. Paramedics assessed the driver and determined he has a neck or back injury, a crushed pelvis and one of his feet is trapped in the wreckage. The rescue got underway at about 9:45 a.m. and only about 20 minutes has elapsed. In the meantime an arrest has been made. Const. David Thiessen, who pursued the fleeing driver, has returned to the scene and reported he has apprehended the driver and he will be charged with impaired driving. Emergency personnel continue to work in concert with each other. The driver is the only victim still in the vehicle. The backseat passenger has been able to get out of the car on her own and becomes hysterical again when she sees her friend being tended to by paramedics. She is walked gently away from the scene by Sgt. Lantz. A hearse arrives to take away the girl who didn’t make it and she is carried on a stretcher by firefighters and placed in the back with the students looking on. The driver has now been freed and he was a neck brace on. He is placed in an ambulance and taken away. “I didn’t expect the girl to get upset and start freaking out,” said Matthew Weiss, one of the hundreds of students lining the sidewalk. As for drinking and driving? “Yeah, not for me,” said AJ surveying the wreckage.

GO rounds the bend Finally, a commitment from the provincial government on seeing GO transit round the Lake Ontario bend and come east to Stoney Creek. Yes, it will be four years until the GO train system gets its station at Centennial Parkway, but there is a commitment and a plan. Nothing was going to happen in Grimsby or Niagara without this first step taking place. Grimsby Mayor Bob Bentley confirmed Tuesday there has been talk of a stop at 50 Road, but the next stop on the developing system “should” be Casablanca, and that is great news. When? We’ll see. Rare scene at Queen’s Park Lots of ground to cover, so let’s hop right to it. Rex Ge is a moderately happy man today. Monday in the Ontario legislature a rare thing occurred when Ontario Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli rose in the house to answer a question posed by Niagara West Glanbrook MPP Tim Hudak. Chiarelli answered affirmatively when asked if he would agree to work WITH Hudak on Ge’s file, which includes an offiical Ontario Energy Board complaint filed by Hudak and a request that Niagara Peninsula Energy make resitution to Ge – the West Lincoln greenhouse operator who had his hydro cut off in February for a $360 bill that was 29 days passed due. That action caused all his inventory to freeze, watering/heating system to freeze complete with burst pipes througout his structure. When you have a government minister saying to an opposition member, “I definitely will join him on this particular file,” and using very strong, definitive language such as, “a very significant injustice that has happened in this particular case,” as Chiarelli did in answering Hudak’s inquiry, those things are rare, indeed. For Ge, it was a muchneeded boost or moral support. He has heard a great deal of positive comment from the community but he has also heard comments saying it was his fault, he missed the payment, too bad so sad...that kind of thing. This case goes beyond that. It has from the start and now he has the government minister responsible for this matter paying attention to the file.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT Ge is not a grandstander, just the opposite. All he has ever asked for was for NPE to accept responsbility and help him get back on his feet, no more, no less. ****** West Lincoln council has been a train wreck for weeks. In the last couple of meetings they have taken steps to right the ship. Last week the proposed arena project was referred back to Public Works Recreation Services Committee along with a request for a myriad of reports and meetings to be re-set to generate more public input and understanding. In the end, that is a good thing. Direction and financial understanding is of paramount importance on that project, so let’s backburner that a bit and let the process happen. At Monday’s council meeting, Coun. Dave Bylsma brought up the matter of on-street parking in the Smithville core. Nobody seems to know who instigated what on that matter. Niagara Region officials say removal of all eight spots was requested by the municipality. Mayor Doug Joyner said when interviewed weeks ago and again on Monday that is it is a regional road and Niagara Region has responsibility – which is
true, but did not answer the question “Did West Lincoln request the parking be removed?” Businesses struggling to survive and develop have enough obstacles let alone being undermined by the municipality in which they pay taxes. The design is set for the road. The businesses in that stretch are toast, in this case and it is embarassing that nobody on council knew what was happening with that plan, including the mayor, the township’s regional representative, who said he understood six of the eight spots in that stretch of Station Street were being returned. Very unfortunate. ****** Another rare occurance happened last Friday. An independent newspaper won an Ontario Community Newspaper Association Premier Award. With corporations owning more than half the titles in the province, complete sweeps of top three positions in most categories is common. NewsNow and ace reporter Katherine Grant bucked that trend earning a second place award in the Best Feature - Over 10,000 circ. category with the Ida Guarascia story, “The face of grace and courage”. First, I can report Ida is still struggling along but has had a couple of procedures to start getting her face prepared for her new prosthetic. There have been setbacks and it has been a tough road, but there is no quit in that lady! On the award, while the story was compelling and powerful, it took skill and experience to tell it tastefully and well. That is Katherine. A consummate professtional, I could not be more proud of her.
