Up Front Get growing for CCWN Niagara West Community Gardens is partnering with Communty Care of West Niagara this summer to grow some fresh vegetables for local families in need. The work will get started this Friday from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Great Lakes Christian High School, which will accomodate this year’s garden. Help is needed to prepare the land, build the garden beds, add the soil and clean up the area. To find the work area, enter the grounds off of King Street, follow the main laneway to the left around to the back of the building and the gardens will be on the left.

By Joanne McDonald Old age has taken a toll on some of the majestic trees lining Main Street in Jordan Village and nine were deemed a safety risk and had to come down this week, however, residents are upset a strategy to replace the trees has not already been initiated. Certified aborist Aurelio Magazzeni was contracted by the Town to do a risk assessment and this week

supervised the removal of trees which he said were in poor condition, decaying at the bottom and a safety risk. Nine trees were cut including sugar maples, horse chestnut and silver maples. “Safety trumps everything,” said Jordan Village resident Neil Johnston, but he’s disappointed that a new generation of trees is not already taking root. “We have been losing trees

but nothing has been done to replace them,” said Linda Johnston. “The wonderful old historic nature of the village is severely impacted,” said Lyn Estall, “We are losing nine huge trees all at once.” Jordan Village resident Pauline Creighton said the need to start replanting dying trees was recognized in the 2006 Vineland, Jordan, and Jordan Station Second-

4-storey condo topic of new open house As a result of significant public interest at the developer initiated open house and the Town of Grimsby’s open house, the Homes by DeSantis development team has reimagined the Century Condos Project. The new proposal for a four-storey project will be the subject of a public open house next Tuesday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at town hall. The four-storey proposal conforms with the Town’s Official Plan. Planning consultant John Ariens said aspects of the new design have been meticulously considered. “This elevation was carefully crafted, considering public feedback relating to the importance of maintaining the heritage aesthetic already demonstrated in the historic downtown core,” said Ariens. “Design cues were taken from existing downtown heritage properties. Enhanced architectural details such as cornice mouldings and camber top curved windows, along with authentic style stone and wrought iron elements have been incorporated into the new elevation.” To maintain a similar density from what was originally proposed the building has now been spread across the northern portion of the property, as the plan no longer proposes to extend the public alleyway through to Doran Avenue. The development consists of 92 condominium residences. The development maintains commercial units along the Main Street frontage at ground level, one of which is intended to be a restaurant.

What is a Regional Official Plan? A Regional Official Plan is a long range land use planning document for the Niagara Region that provides strategic direction and contains land use policies to guide growth in Niagara to the year 2041. A Regional Official Plan needs to comply with provincial policy, address regional matters and provide policy direction/guidance to local municipalities. Why is the Region doing a “Five Year Review”? The purpose of the Five Year Review is to assess the Plan and to ensure that it remains current with changes to Provincial plans and policies, and reflects and supports the strategic goals and priorities of the community and Regional Council. Creating a New Regional Official Plan When the Regional Official Plan was originally approved in the mid 1970’s, the role of the Region and the content of the Plan primarily focused on protecting agricultural lands and establishing urban (settlement area) boundaries. Over the years, amendments have been made to the Plan to reflect the Region’s increased planning functions under an evolving provincial planning system. In 2017, resources were allocated to develop a New Official Plan that is contemporary, user friendly, provides a consistent structure and reflects the current comprehensive planning framework. The New Regional Official Plan The completion date for the new Regional Official Plan is December 2021. The content will address matter such as: where and how municipalities in Niagara will grow and develop; opportunities for employment; transit and the transportation network; infrastructure capacity; protection of significant environmental systems and features; protection of agricultural lands and the agricultural economy, cultural heritage and address climate change. Community Consultation In 2013, the Region initiated “Imagine Niagara” which was a significant public consultation process to determine what the public thought was important for an Official Plan to address for planning to 2031. Special event marks 30th anniversary Handmade and DIY projects have never been more popular – so it is no surprise that Sewing with Stephanie has been teaching kids to sew for 30 years. Stephanie Diemert started her business in a tiny Grimsby duplex. In the first year she taught 26 children how to make projects from simple drawstring bags to pj pants and skirts. Since then, as the students have grown, so has the project list. Now students can also make more advanced projects like full-sized quilts and prom dresses. Now over 1,000 students, starting as young as five years-old, have learned the joy of making your own. “Sewing is accessible. Anyone who wants to do it can do it,” says Diemert. Not only has she taught students with a variety of skill levels but also students who have physical and developmental issues which may stand in the way of other activities.

The lessons are also meant to be fun, where work does not need to be perfect to be a success. Kids have control over how much they want to learn, what they want to make, and how challenging or easy their projects will be. “The classes are very social,” Diemert says, “lifelong friendships have been made here.” Every year, Sewing with Stephanie celebrates the work of students with their fashion show. To celebrate this year’s 30th fashion show Stephanie decided to do something special, and proceeds will go towards purchasing furniture and books for a school in Belize. There will be prizes to be won quilts, pillows and much more. The 30th annual Sewing with Stephanie fashion show is June 3 at 3 pm at the Casablanca Winery Inn, 4 Windward Dr., Grimsby. Anna had many attributes that made her a very special individual. Her smile would light up a room, and her outgoing personality will always be fondly remembered. Evan’s Ride important event By Joanne McDonald Delivering his speech as the best man at his brother Terence’s wedding, Joel Attema told the crowd he was missing PoultryFest to be part of the celebration that day. The room erupted in laughter, the West Lincoln side of the family in stitches, the other, a bit perplexed as they were from Markham. The speech was a testament to how Joel shone in his special role that day and more, it spoke to the deep ties that have shaped his connection to a close knit community. The second eldest in a family of six boys, Joel is a thoughtful, handsome 26-year-old, full of good humour, big ideas and a very busy life. He’s also on the autism spectrum and for his parents Rick and Angela, dairy farmers just outside of Smithville, it’s been quite a journey to find services and supports throughout their son’s childhood, teen years and now, young adulthood. They have a heart for families on that same journey and they’ll be cheering for Joel as he participates Sat. June 9 in the 10th annual Evan’s Ride for Autism - a milestone for Joel too - he hasn’t missed a run. “This ride is so important for the community,” said Angela. ‘It’s raising awareness and of course, financial support to provide more local services. Families need to feel connected, sometimes they can feel isolated and alone. As a parent, you feel vulnerable.” “There is a need for services, but just as important is the need for awareness in the community and the importance of inclusion and local programs to build a life, to give a person value, a sense of belonging, and to be a contributing member of their commu-

nity.” Rick and Angela, both bright spirits, offer a warm welcome around the kitchen table as they talk about Joel’s life and the importance of Evan’s Ride for the community. “Services need to be available. There wasn’t a lot there when Joel was young.” He attended Covenant Christian Grade School and Smithville Christian High School where he received the perseverance award when he ran cross country. “Perseverance is one of his strengths,” says Angela. “The biggest thing was finding avenues and opportunities where he could enjoy social connections. It was difficult to fit in.” The family found an opportunity through Woodview Manor, driving Joel weekly to Hamilton throughout his high school years. “It was a Thursday night place to just hang out.” The group found friendships and lots of adventure, one time visiting the Attema farm and many summer trips including Boston and a jazz festival in Montreal. Whether playing hockey for the Niagara Junior Ice Dogs, an organization which supports special needs, riding his E-bike to a workout at Icon Fitness or his workplace at Stanpac, Joel has been given the foundation to follow his own dreams for the future. It will be four years this September since Joel started full-time employment as a machine operator at Stanpac in Smithville. On his own steam he went to the Smithville Employment Centre, worked with a helpful Centre staff member “Becky” then came home to tell his parents he got a job and would be start-

ing the next day. A shout out to Stanpac, “they’ve been great to him,” says Rick. “Joel is earning a pay cheque, has benefits, colleagues and friends. We need more employers willing to give people with different abilities a chance.” Through work he has made friends, including Sam Perikala, once a colleague and now “one of the best friends I’ve ever had,” says Joel who has earned an enviable work record and reputation from colleagues. The church community has also been a constant support. “It’s important to have a few people who understand, friends,” says Angela, singling out Hank Tenoeveri as a fishing buddy and friend. That faith community and trust in God have sustained the journey. “God has provided and opened up doors including Woodview Manor and Stanpac,” Angela said. It was 10 years ago when Evan Sheldrake with his dad, Len. launched the first Evan’s Ride for Autism and he has been riding strong ever since. “One in 68,” says Joel, citing the shocking statistic of children identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. And even more shocking, is the ‘one in 45’ lightning bolt that jumps out of a google search on Rick’s cell phone that states “a new survey of parents suggests that one in 45 children ages 3 to 17 has been diagnosed with ASD” from the U.S. National Health Survey Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. Saturday, June 9 will mark a decade since that first ride, which has since raised more than $130,000 for local programs and family supports, socialization and camp programs supporting hundreds of children and families living with

the autism challenges. Registration begins at 9 a.m., opening ceremonies and ride warm-up at 9:30 a.m. and the ride begins at 10 a.m. Riders will leave from Sheldrick Transport in Smithville on an 11 km cycle. There will be commemorative t-shirts for every registered rider and special t-shirts for charter riders who have participated since the very first ride. A video is being shot for this anniversary ride so shine up your bikes and bring your best smile. Proceeds will be donated to Autism Community. Round 3 really a fresh start Next Tuesday’s public meeting regarding what is now a four-storey condo proposal for downtown Grimsby by Homes By DeSantis is really a fresh start for this project. There were two meetings, one hosted by the developer and one by the town, both packed, both heated. To the credit of Gabe DeSantis, and somewhat in defence of him, he reloaded and brought back a proposal which fits the Town’s Official Plan. It is common knowledge at this point the idea of going higher than the OP dictated originated with Town. No matter now. That is the in past. Hopefully all learned from it. Time to move on. M.W.

When we first knocked this idea around last fall, the core idea was to create an event that virtually the

The sponsors are lined up: Grimsby Ford, Grimsby Chrysler, Grimsby KIA, Wills Chevrolet and Grimsby Hyundai - our own Fab 5 car dealers...and thanks to them for getting on board. We also have an excellent caterer who has offered their co-sponsorship of the event’s lunch in the Ontario College of Health and Technology in Winona. Turns out, the director of the school lives in Grimsby and gets NewsNow every week and was very excited about getting involved. How does a lunch of softshelled tacos with pulled chicken and all the toppings, street corn dipped in butter “that is out of this world” and watermelon wedges for dessert. The event is being hosted in the auditorium at Peach King Centre and the Saturday of Father’s Day weekend was a specific target. As a kid, and as a dad, I have been on both ends of “It’s hard to find something for Dad for Father’s Day” comments. But, we made sure to have the promotion in play in time for Mother’s Day as well and we had six sign up just for that, so glad that aspect worked out. How can you go wrong

with $20 for an outing for four, and have a chance to win a family pack of four Blue Jays vs New York Yankees tickets for no extra charge? If we sell out, each entrant will have a onein-30 chance to win a $250 prize. Not too shabby! The Kinsmen and Kinettes are one of what is now a handful of service clubs trying to get things done in our community...in this case, Grimsby. This event, obviously given the entry fee, is about giving back to the community. In keeping with that, any proceeds from the event will be split between FORT and Big Brother Big Sisters. These are two groups doing invaluable work in every corner of Niagara West and are absolutely worthy of support. Reader defends Grimsby council Dear Editor, It was subtle, but it was there; a typeset uppercut to the jaws of Mayor Bentley and Aldermans Berry and Mullins in the last line of your editorial. You are nothing if not despairingly predictable, Mr. Williscraft. One had to merely glimpse the cover story to register that your strategically placed “last word” editorial would pick apart each bullet line by line, and you did not disappoint. With an abundance of both worldly and locally sourced newsworthy topics on which to build your column, I’m curious as to why you repeatedly place yourself in the self-proclaimed position of Grimsby Town Council critic. While I appreciate your factual reporting of council meetings, the 2/3 page of glassis-half-empty antagonistic verbiage that always follows negates the accuracy of the

Letters original story. Your editorial has grown into a teenager needing to have the last word right before they slam their bedroom door. Story, Rebuttal, Repeat. My guess is that you’ve had numerous people approach you bearing accolades for taking public servants to task in your paper. But just as I’m certain you’ve had your fair share of “atta boys” over the years, I know that Mr. Bentley, Mr. Berry and Ms. Mullins have also received them. In the case of Carolyn at least, I can attest to the honesty and integrity that already emphatically and irrefutably occupies her. It may be time to change things up a bit; perhaps spend a Monday evening somewhere new and relaxing with your feet up; maybe bring in a columnist to write an
