The Kinsmen Club of Grimsby are ready and waiting for their annual fireworks sales. The club has its trailer set up in the Village Inn Plaza at Main and Christie streets in Grimsby. The club has a full array of fireworks from sparklers to complete packages to large individual items. The trailer will be open until and including Monday, May 23.

Jazz lovers check out GSS Grimsby Secondary School will be a swingin’ scene on Wednesday June 1 for a night of jazz. Starting at 7:30 p.m. as series of performances have been prepared including the final show for students graduating who are members of the senior jazz band. As well, a professional jazz trio will also perform. Tickets will only be sold at door: $10 for adults; $5 for seniors and students. The concert will be held in the auditorium on the second floor.

agara is preparing to take on a major expansion to meet that need. Friday was the official groundbreaking for a major addition to the CCWN’s Central Avenue in Beamsville location. The

expansion will allow for management of its food bank all that location for the first time - no additional storage. Noting that supply and need for food has escalated from 85,000 lbs to

Artists and artisans ready for Festival of Arts June 4 David Erman For NewsNow Moriah KostukSimpson has visited the Grimsby Festival of Arts many times in the past, but this will be her first year where she is taking part as an artist and vendor. Kostuk-Simpson, a Grimsby native, makes custom handcrafted jewellery. She will be one of over 40 unique artisans who create high quality art at the Festival, which will be celebrating its 50th year this year. “I used to go all the time with my mom growing up,

but this is the first time I’ve ever been in the show,” Kostuk-Simpson said. The annual Grimsby Festival of Arts will take place on Saturday, June 4 at the Grimsby Peach King Centre. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The juried show features handcrafted items from a host of exhibitors. There will be a beer and wine garden, food trucks and live entertainment. Coming from what she calls a crafty family, making jewellery was a hobby of hers when

she was young. Kostuk-Simpson studied jewellery art at George Brown College in Toronto, learning the goldsmithing techniques and design skills needed to create unique items. When she makes her jewellery, Kostuk-Simpson said she tries to use materials already onhand as much as possible, as she recycles and reuses things and gives them a second life, such as family heirlooms. Getting outside to enjoy the great outdoors can reduce the likelihood that a person will live a sedentary lifestyle that can negatively affect long-term health. But many adults are spending too much time indoors. A 2014 survey found that 28 per cent of adults do not spend time outside daily. Propagation Ban and Sampling of Plants Susceptible to Plum Pox Virus Between May and October 2016, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will be inspecting selected rural and residential properties in the Niagara Region, to sample susceptible trees for the Plum Pox Virus and/or to verify compliance with the propagation ban that is in place. This means that property owners may see CFIA inspectors on their property. The Niagara Region is currently under federal quarantine. Regulations are in place to prevent the spread of plum pox virus outside of the quarantine area. Plum Pox Virus is a serious plant disease that threatens Canada’s stone fruit industry. It does not affect human or animal health. Plants that are susceptible to the virus include apricot, nectarine, peach and, plum trees, and some ornamental shrubs such as purpleleaf sandcherry. A ban on propagation is in place. This ban prohibits anyone in the Niagara quarantine area from producing trees and plants that are susceptible to the virus. This includes producing trees and plants from seed, cuttings, grafting or any other method. It was eventually lost off the coast of Turkey as Lok Prabha. The 147.50 metre long bulk carrier was built at Osaka, Japan, as Banasol in 1966 and became a Seaway trader for the first time the following year. Take precautions during West Nile season Warmer temperatures are here, and with them come the onset of West Nile Virus season. Niagara residents and visitors to the area are encouraged to take the following protective measures to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes: • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes when outdoors • Whenever you use mosquito repellent, apply a product containing DEET or Icaridin, and carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s directions • Drain any areas of standing or stagnant water • Make sure all windows and doors in your home have screens. Again this year, low impact larvicides (methoprene and Bti) will be applied to areas on public

property where mosquitoes are breeding beginning at the end of May and monthly through the summer season. These include catch basins and other standing water sites that cannot be easily drained. In addition, 21 mosquito traps will be placed throughout the region to capture mosquitoes that will be tested for the virus. Niagara residents with municipally-owned catch basins located on their private property can arrange to have the low impact larvicide (methoprene) placed in them by contacting Niagara Region Public Health. This event has been a staple on the Grimsby arts scene for nearly 50 years. It grew wildly popular when parked at its longtime home on Nelles Boulevard. Several consecutive years of brutal weather pushed the event indoors and it has moved to several other locations in recent years, even having to cancel due to work strife at Blessed Trinity one year. Now Grimsby Rotary organizers hope to settle it into its new home at the PK. A great deal of effort is going into making it its own special atmosphere once again - from food trucks to live entertainment - so put it on your calendar and be sure to stop by. All proceeds go to support Community Living, so you can’t go wrong!

Sometimes common sense should prevail When Bruce Mackenzie first came to me regarding the woodlot owned by the Irish family on Hunter Road in Grimsby’s west end it was obvious they had a gem that needed to be polished in the eyes of the public. I’ve known Bruce a long time. He is a passionate, yet realistic, supporter of all things nature. I first got to know him well when there was consideration to fill in the Biggar Lagoons which were on the Department of National Defence lands in the northwest corner of Grimsby. That was an 11th hour deal to be sure. Tenders had gone out and initial land prep had begun when work was stopped and an assessment of the environmental impact was done. A host of migratory birds - for some it was their only natural habitat stop for a great distance - would have been impacted. We gave that issue a great deal of time and attention, got the project altered greatly, preserved the habitat and the government still got what it needed in a win-win solution. The woodlot is similar but different. While the woodlot is a key environmental feature, it has a great profile for the community being smack dab in the middle of a residential area - as opposed to centred on a large tract of land buffered all around by government lands as the lagoons were. A major difference is

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Town officials have been smacking their chops at the additional development dollars which would be realized if the Livingston extension were put through, thereby severing the woodlot. Niagara Region had things in motion with an environmental review started back in 2014 knowing full well the Greenbelt review was due in 2015. The review came in just under the 2015 wire being released in December. It included 87 total recommendations on how communities should be built in the Golden Horseshoe area - an area projected to grow by four million people over the next 25 years. The point Bruce and Ja Irish, whose family own the woodlot lands, have made from the outset is that any consideration of development and impacting the woodlots should be set aside until after the Greenbelt review process was completed. This would seem quite obvious since ongoing freezing of land development or expansion of same, would

certainly perpetuate the preservation of the Hunter Road land. That is, indeed what happened. David Crombie, who chaired the review process, provided his input to the provincial government in December. Now the government has taken that information and not only held ground on original Greenbelt footprints but seeks to expand them. There are those who rue the day the Greenbelt legislation was ever implemented and there are problems with it, but it was needed and necessary. I’ve talked with Bruce many times about this, and the simplest and most succinct comment which I’ve heard was: “The Irish Grove Wood Lot is a natural heritage legacy that most communities would only be envious of. To consider driving a road through the woodlot and the last remaining peach orchards in Grimsby in favour of just more pavement is a shame,” said Bruce. “As Joni Mitchell composed and sang in 1970, ‘That you don’t know what you’ve got ‘Til it’s gone They paved paradise And put up a parking lot’. Indeed. What seems common sense, too often, flies out the door where government is concerned. It is not always a case of “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Sometimes is just poor choices made by politicians and bureaucrats.
