Michelle Seaborn maintains she had business reasons to be at the Casablanca Winery Inn last Thursday, staff and the inn’s owner have a decidedly different version of events. Last Thursday, a bizarre chain of events ensued when a member of the waiting staff spotted Seaborn “hiding” in a small alcove which is part of the hallway connecting the

inn’s kitchen with the Vintages meeting room. “I got a phone call at home,” said inn owner Don Snively. “My waitress told me a woman was hiding in the corner where there is a little alcove designed so you can’t see the kitchen.” Snively said the waitress was so concerned that it appeared the meeting was being recorded by this woman she followed her out - after asking her to leave the area

- and took a photo of the woman so she could identify who that she was later. In response to questions emailed and delivered to Seaborn in a letter delivered at Grimsby’s council meeting Monday night, Seaborn initially would not comment. “Since this pertains to my business, and that of the Grimsby Farmers Market, this response is not to be printed anywhere,” Seaborn wrote. Snively said he is not aware

of any business connection between the inn and Seaborn, but did note his chef is also a vendor at the Farmers Market. Of the incident, Snively said Seaborn’s explanation was just not plausible . “She was hiding in the corner,” said Snively. “As far as I am concerned, if someone has booked a room there shouldn’t be anyone in the corner.” As for Seaborn being at the

inn for business Snively said that didn’t wash, either. “To my knowledge, we’ve never bought anything from her. She’s using that as an excuse,” said Snively, who noted Thursday was the first time he had seen his chef on site at a time he was not scheduled to work. “When one of the staff asked the chef why he was there, he just said, ‘stay out of it’.” “Your information is incorrect. I met at Bogeys and we went into the kitchen to talk with another chef regarding chicken products,” Seaborn wrote in an email when told of Snively’s comments. The chef who worked Thursday night said he did see Seaborn in the kitchen and asked if needed help but she no. They did not talk about chicken, he said. When asked if she was denying being in the alcove at all, Seaborn said, “we looked into the meeting” to get the attention of the chef’s wife who was attending a meeting about new businesses in the west end, and she had her phone out to text her friend to leave. Snively said Seaborn knew of the meeting, organized by Wayne Fertich, days before though

as she approached the inn’s receptionist saying she was invited to a meeting on Thursday but could not remember which room it was in. When the receptionist had no information, a manager was also quizzed about Fertich’s meeting location. While Snively said he has serious concerns with the occurrence itself, he also has concerns about Seaborn going through the inn’s kitchen to get to the alcove area. The area can only be accessed through the kitchen. “What if she fell or tracked in dirt from her farm?” Snively noted. The gathering in the Vintages room was actually two meetings organized by Grimsby residents who have concerns with the conduct and performance of Grimsby council. Fertich, a former alderman, was one of the organizers. He said

there was a smaller group meeting to start the evening for which Ald. Dave Kadwell was invited and attended. After that brief meeting, a group of more than 30 attended to talk about current issues ongoing in the town - ranging from planning issues to the biodigester to heritage,” said Fertich. “The whole thing is just sad,” said Fertich. “It is unbelievable that an elected official would do that. And there is no mistake here. To be in that spot, which is only accessible through kitchen, and hide? Unbelievable.” Seaborn maintains the matter is just a misunderstanding, while Snively said he believes almost nothing she stated was accurate to what multiple staff members saw. Meeting organizers are checking with authorities to assess the legality of the incident.

Council approves largest public works project ever With the approval of Grimsby council on Monday night, the Winston Road area in the town’s northwest corner is going to get a facelift unlike any other. “This is, by far, the largest project public works has ever done,” director of public works Bob LeRoux told council as he gave an overview of the work to be done. Starting in June, the six-month project will require one lane of traffic through the area with monitors for traffic flow while work is beind done. During off periods, two lanes (one each direction) will be open. Noting that hydro lines have been buried and decorative lights being added - at a cost of more than $1 million - LeRooux noted the project will be paid for from by reserves, external contributions and development charges.

Grimsby aldermen seek biodigester update With a FITT contract deadline looming, Grimsby councillors Joanne Johnston and Dave Kadwell are looking for an update from Grimsby Energy officials. It was in mid-January - four months ago - when Grimsby Power chairman Joe Panetta attended a meeting of council to give a rare public update on the status of the biodigester being built on Sobie Road, just east of Park Road. At that time, Panetta told council, which is the shareholder of Grimsby Power et al, that the biodigester would be operational by mid-February, then adjusted slightly to say by the end of February so as to leave a buffer. As of Monday’s council meeting, May 15, the biodigester – which started with a budget of $3.5 million and is now in the $8-plus million cost ballpark – is still not operational. In the “new business” part of

the council agenda, Coun. Joanne Johnston started to note that she had asked for hydro officials to come back with another update at the previous council meeting, but she was cut off mid-sentence by Mayor Bob Bentley who said she can contact him if she wants to tour the site. “We had someone here just two months ago,” added Bentley. During his turn to speak under new business, Coun. Dave Kadwell backed up Johnston. “There is a FITT deadline coming in about 10 days. I agree with Ald. Johnston. I look forward to an update, too,” said Kadwell. The deadline Kadwell spoke of was set last November when hydro officials got a second reprieve from an original November 2015 deadline they had for getting the facility up and running. If the deadline is not met, the IESO could find the utility in default of the FITT contract.

Wife of the late Norton (1987). Dear mother of Elizabeth (Frank) Spoja, Robert (Maureen) Strong and Barbara (Rick) Kush. Grandmother of Tracey (John) Fabbro, Richard (Sharon) Spoja, Walter (Marisa) Spoja, Robert (Mary St.James) Kush, Richard (Lori) Kush, Charlene Kush (Scott Beamish). Also survived by 13 great grandchildren. Margaret will be lovingly missed be her sister Edith Holowchuk, St. Catharines, and brother Sidney Read, London. Predeceased by her brother James Read and sister Isobel Legge. Margaret married Norton Strong and lived in Beamsville for over 60 years before moving to Grimsby. She was a Life member of the Women’s Institute, a life member of the Beamsville Lawn Bowling Club, a charter member of the Beamsville Senior’s Club. Also involved with Brownies, Meals on Wheels and many other activities volunteering her time. Margaret received the Order of Niagara for all the volunteer work at St. Alban’s Church.

The family would like to thank the staff of Lincoln Park, McNally House and Dr. DePetrillo for all the loving care provided. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place at St. Alban’s Anglican Church, 4341 Ontario St. Beamsville on Friday May 19 at 11:00 am. with visitation one hour prior. Better Town-DIA partnership needed The Winston Road area project for the Town of Grimsby is a darling of council, and it should be. With a price tag in excess of $8 million in total it represents the largest public works project the municipality has ever undertaken, according to director of public works, Bob LeRoux. But on behalf of businesses downtown, please don’t forget about them. The Winston Road area got its hydro lines buried at a cost of more than $1 million to make it look pretty, which is awesome, but the Town has to remember to support its business core in similar ways. For many years, the town simply left all downtown improvements to the DIA. Appropriate since that is part of the DIA’s mandate, but it should still be a partnership. Council has moved mountains to create a second business sector in town. Just don’t forget about the first one which has paid the freight for decades. MW.

The show must go in West Lincoln The pot was calling the kettle black at West Lincoln council Monday night. I am sad I missed it. It was another one of those “can’t be two places at one time’ nights, I’m afraid. Yes, the Hatfields and McCoys were out in force, this time, to a large degree, changing sides. Now it was Coun. Jason Trombetta and Coun. Terry Bell raising questions about an advisory committee matter, upset about changes made, meeting minutes and who was invited to what. On this particular matter, if you took out library and inserted MURS, you would have much of the same comments Coun. Dave Bylsma made over many months regarding things changed in the MURS RFP without council approval and other key points. It is laughable that they would take issue with a style and process which seemed just fine over the last many months. But that is exactly how West Lincoln has operated - it is not about following process, it is about seemingly choosing when to follow processes in place. It’s not unlike selective hearing. The married folk in the crowd will know of what I speak there. I know I am guilty of it on a regular basis. I’m just a bit like Dory in Finding Nemo...something shiny, oh, I’ll follow that. For me though, instead of something shiny it’s more like, “right after the bottom of the ninth I’ll take out the

MIKE WILLISCRAFT garbage”. Mmm, not happening. It’s gone from my brain. And that seems to be the case here. That’s just one tidbit from Monday’s festivities. You had one councillor storming out after council rose from closed session, a confrontation of councillors outside chambers, and yet another heated exchange with Mayor Doug Joyner and Coun, Mike Rehner after the mayor read a prepared statement regarding a letter from the municipality’s integrity commissioner and demanded an apology from Rehner. I believe that is the fourth apology demanded by someone in a meeting since February. While there are no officials records kept, that must be a record of some sort. So I found all this information flowing in via phone calls, emails and texts into the week hours of the morning to be keenly interesting given I had lengthy email exchange with Joyner last week in which he claimed I only show up to seek negative angles. Here are two excerpts from two

different emails. The first one is a complete email, the second was just a summarizing paragraph of another...there were six or seven in total: #1 Sorry, Mike, you were played last night my friend at Committee and that’s why you showed up at Committee. It must be sad as a journalist when you have to show up to committee or Council to scratch up dirt only. Well, there was no dirt played last night at Committee sorry! Our process and our lines of communication are just fine my friend. Write something nice for a change Mike!” #2 “Mike, this is so obvious what’s happening here however, there is too many positive infrastructure and social programs to speak of that this Council and staff have achieved to be talking anymore about this matter. I suggest you move along! There simply is no need to “scratch up dirt only”, it is sitting right on top of the pile. The question is, just what is the pile made of heaped at the council table. This is another one where I implore you, good citizens of West Lincoln, go to the video tape and watch the proceedings, you will see there is no need for me to be in attendance for the show to go on under the West Lincoln big top.

The cycling fundraiser supports two key programs, says Kathy Ryan, president of The Autism Community, noting there is both 11 and 22 km routes. “The one, Facing you Fears, is an anxiety management program for kids with autism. The second, is My Life as an EPIC WIN, a transition to adulthood program for teens and young adults with autism,” said Ryan. The event is hosted at JW Sheldrick Transport, 2942 Thompson Road.
