Up Front Multi-use facility project on Tues. PW agenda For the second straight month, West Lincoln’s proposed multi-use facility project will be on the agenda for the township’s Public Works Recreation Services Committee meeting. The matter, which has been highly contentious and drawn packed galleries, will make a return visit as it did not get a seconder at the committee’s April meeting and was deferred back by council. The meeting will be held at the township offices starting at 6:30 p.m.
Cheating means voting change The FORT’s Cutest Dog contest should have wrapped up this week but evidence of wholesale cheating – to sway the vote towards one dog in particular – means all 1,600 votes have to be set aside. “We’re extremely saddened this could happen,” said Beth Shaw, FORT executive director. Biodigester construction weeks away By Mike Williscraft NewsNow By early June ground will be broken for Grimsby’s new $4 million biodigester plant. The facility, to be built at the former landfill site on Park Road near Sobie Road, does not have any grants in line to finance the project. “The project is definitely proceeding with or without the grant but the grant would be a bonus and really shorten the payback
period,” said Grimsby Mayor Bob Bentley, who also sits as a member of the Grimsby Energy board of directors. “(Our) MP and MPP’s are working on pushing our application to the Small Community’s Fund for Green Energy, too, as Tim Hudak has contacted the Infrastructure Minister Duguid last week. I spoke directly with Jim Bradley last Friday and he is following up at the province
plus I spoke with Dean Allison Thursday and he and his staff are following up at the federal level.(We) should hear something within a week or two.” GE board chairman James Detenbeck said the project has received approval for the construction start. “We have received the first building permit for the construction and will be scheduling a ground breaking for the project as we move for-

Regarding possible grants, he added, “As of writing this we are on the list for consideration to be funded through the Infrastructure Ontario program, however, we have neither heard confirmation of getting money or the project being rejected. Bentley noted that tender contracts for items such as input
materials are in the works. “We are looking locally for supply of equipment and goods where possible to make this a Grimsby/ Niagara project and have a few companies lined up already,” said Bentley. Full production is hoped for fall as part of a 20-year FIT (Feed-In Tariff) contract which is projected to generate as much as $25 million over the life of the agreement.

Matthew Beamer was all smiles on Monday morning. Matthew, 11, was the recipient of a cheque for $2,165 from the Winona Men’s Club. The Grimsby boy, who has cerebral palsy, is going to use the money to buy a specially fitted bike that will give him more mobility. “He used to ride one at school and he loved it,” said his nana, Dianne Beamer. The money was raised through the sale of peach sundaes at the Winona Peach Festival. Club member Mark Wasilewski said the club is set up to give back to the community. "The heart and centre of our club is charity, it is our main purpose."

VOTE From Page 1 all appeared well until Friday. Then angry messages began to appear on the FORT Facebook page where voting was taking place. Comments included accusations of cheating when dogs formerly in the lead dropped way back in the votes. By Monday morning it was clear there was a problem and David Vandersteen, who works at FORT, began to check Facebook profiles
to see what the issue was. He discovered dozens of fake accounts. Facebook, he said, does have a way to scan for fake accounts but these were set up with content that wouldn’t be detected unless they were opened and read. With 1,600 votes cast there is no time to check each account to determine which ones are fake so all votes have to be scrapped. The contest goes on, however, as will the Dogs 4 Youth Dog Show. Votes can be cast at FORT between today and Friday, May 22
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. – one vote per person, old and young. On Saturday, May 23, the voting will wrap up at Yogurty’s at 1-3 p.m. at 70 Livingston St. (Grimsby Square Plaza) as part of the shop’s grand opening. The winner of the contest will receive their gift basket at The Dogs 4 Youth Dog Show Saturday, May 30 at the Peach King Centre, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “This is going to be a massive event with an indoor dog show and more than 50 vendors,” said Beth Shaw, FORT executive director.
There will also be live entertainment, food trucks and an agility course. Your dog can have a ball running a lure course, get the star treatment in the Pamper Zone, have some fun in the Doggie Play Zone, or visit a Holistic Healer at the Health and Wellness Centre. Of course, for the adults, there are numerous vendors – some pet-related, plus a wide variety of others – and lots to see. The proceeds of the event go to supporting the FORT. Firefighters ready for emergencies With the Niagara Escarpment towering over Grimsby, having a team of firefighters trained to scale its sides for fire and rescue operations is needed more often than you would think. On Saturday morning, members of the Grimsby Fire Department were out on a training exercise to prepare for just such an emergency. “It’s very labour intensive and everyone has a role to play,” said Capt. Jim Taylor. This latest practise session was to break in a new multi-purposed device used to secure ropes and provide lift. For a high-angle rescue there are basically two teams: one team does the lifting and the other rappels over the side with the rescue basket to package up the patient. Ropes are set up on angles to improve lift. Sturdy trees or trucks are emploed as anchors.

Up on the escarpemnt they have to use whatever is at hand, said Taylor. “Last April we had two hikers go over the edge so we had double the rescuers,” said Taylor. Most of the rescues take place at night so lights are also set up to illuminate the area of the escarpment where hikers have gone amiss. The fire service has also had to deal with complications that are anything but accidental. “Last summer some kids set a couch on fire and pushed it over the edge,” said Taylor. “So we had to lower a team down with firefighting equipment to put out the fire.” In the event that a car goes over the side, the aws of life can be loaded up and lowered over the edge as well, said Taylor. Rowers win gold in Mother’s Day regatta Two local rowers, Skyler Goudswaard and Aly Derksen, earned a gold medal in the Senior Womens Double race on Sunday at the Mother’s Day Regatta at the Henley course in Port Dalhousie. The pair also row on the Grimsby Secondary School team and also row for the St. Catharines Rowing Club.
The win earned them a spot to race in the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia this coming weekend. The Stotesbury Cup Regatta is the world’s oldest and one of the largest high school rowing competitions. They will be competing with crews from schools across North America.

At one time, the Grimsby area was known as “The Garden of Canada�. It was a luscious area of orchards, with peach, cherry, apple, and apricot blossoms spreading into the distance on each side of Old Hwy #8, now Main Street. One of the most notable farms in the area was that of Charles Woolverton who, in 1842, built the lovely home which became known as Echo Hall. The house got its unusual name because it stood on the original Woolverton farm which included the land from the escarpment to the lake, and the barn behind the house created an echo effect. Charles Woolverton was the grandson of Jonathan and Mary who came from New Jersey in 1798. Jonathan’s mother and some of his cousins lived here – Bell, Moore, Pettit – so he heard many good things about The Forty and wanted to see for himself. Echo Hall, built by Charles in 1842 is the gracious Gothic-style
home at 366 Main street West. It is a Designated Heritage Property. Much of its original trim and heritage ambiance has been retained yet is a modern home. Echo Hall is just one of seven interesting Grimsby buildings to which your ticket for the Timeless Treasures House Tour will provide admittance. The others are the Metcalf House, Doran House, and Samuel Green Cottage, all on Main Street West; Nixon Farms on Ridge Road; Whittaker House on Elizabeth Street; and St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church on Ontario Street. This year’s theme is Discover Policing. “We have taken a different approach this year for police week,” says Staff Sgt. Shawn Dowd, commanding officer at Grimsby’s 8 District. “In the past we have had a barbecue at our Grimsby detachment which has been attended by nearby members of the community.” The west-end district encompasses the largest geographical area of all the districts policed by the Niagara Regional Police Service. “Instead of a few nearby members of the community being able to attend our office we will

Scandal rocks dog contest Complaints of fake Facebook pages, resulting in skewed voting, has organizers of FORT’s “Cutest Dog Contest” have had to hit the “paws” button. All this for the glorious title of having the cutest dog title and a $100 gift basket. FORT (Foundation of Resources Teens) organizers have had to do away with the original voting process and start anew. People can vote at FORT’s Grimsby location is the Carnegie Building on Adelaide Street at Ontario Street from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday until May 22, or Saturday, May 23 from 1-3 p.m. at Yogurty’s in Grimsby Square Plaza. This is reminiscent of those pageant moms that have to have their kids win at any cost. Too bad. The good folks at FORT are trying to do something good and have some fun along the way, so let’s treat it as such. M.W.
WL: Time to get your research on If you’re paying attention to West Lincoln’s current skirmish over a possible new multi-use facility project, town hall will be the place to be next Tuesday. The matter which was not discussed at the last Public Works Recreation Services Committee meeting in April, then hotly debated at a subsequent council meeting only to be referred back to May’s PWRS Committee meeting again will be on the Tuesday might meeting agenda. And, it would seen, the committee might even generate a seconder to Mayor Doug Joyner’s motion to initiate the process to build a new facility with a cost of about $16 million. I’ve said my piece on the lack of a seconder issue as a form of protest by committee members last month. It was a mistake any way you slice it and indefensible. If there are truly members of West Lincoln council who believe they don’t have enough information on which to form the basis of discussion points after six months in office, it is time for them to resign. Clearly, being an elected official is not for them if they do not have the time to develop an understanding of the largest issue facing council, and the most expensive. Next point. Mayor Joyner said after the October municipal election he believed his re-election was a mandate of sorts to push ahead with the gold-plated version of a multi-use facility build. This is incorrect. It was the focal point of his campaign. He did win, but... and there always is one...it’s pretty hard to consider it a mandate when about 1/3 of the population voted. That is not Mayor Joyner fault.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT That kind of voter turnout is pretty consistent across municipal boundaries. Another factor there is, most learned West Lincoln residents who know traditional voting lines will tell you that if Katie Trombetta had not run Paul Keizer would be mayor now – this from assessing the result of the vote split. Similarly, if Paul Keizer had not run, Katie would have been returned to the mayor’s chair. However, “what ifs” and “maybes” don’t count. All three ran. Joyner won and we are where we are. The root of the issue here is this project, no matter what form it may ultimately take, requires better financial planning. The research and public discussion has been done properly. The potential designs, the public meetings, it’s all there and done correctly. The elephant in the room all along has been funding. The “haves” of the region pay for the amenities they have. Grimsby coughed up a lot of money over 10 years to pay for the new facilities they have. They tacked on a higher level of taxation to offset cost and taxpayers said, “ok”. Now, they did cheat a little when taking the tax off as they spent quite a bit of that levy por-
tion to bolster town employee numbers significantly, but the removal of that tax still resulted in a significant decrease. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago the possibility of money coming from the wind energy companies. This is fact in other towns where councils in those communities took advantage of that option and used wind money to finance new facilities. I was not saying West Lincoln should do that, but it is an option and all options should be reviewed. That is the duty of council. What concerns me is the lack of attention council seems to be paying as a whole these days though. Last week when I was seeking comment on what was happening with the major construction project in the downtown core regarding on-street parking, nobody on council seemed to know what was happening. Even the mayor thought parking was being restored in the stretch in front of The Pool Place and The Guitar Loft when asked. It was not until Coun. Dave Bylsma got involved in a conference call to clarify things did it become apparent Niagara Region had done away with 7-8 spots. How does that decision get made without council knowing? They should have been railing against Niagara Region for making a decision detrimental to the downtown business community. Instead, nobody knew and the project is underway. So let’s have a good conversation Tuesday, shall we? No need for finger pointing and name calling. It is time to get your research done councillors and make an informed decision.

Rose Cottage was the beneficiary of National Records Management’s Earth Day shredding program. Just over one ton of paper was taken in, which saved about 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil and 7,000 gallons of water. Via donations, over $600 was generated for Rose Cottage.
