NewsNow While hockey pundits were scratching their respective heads in wonderment, there was nothing but joy in the Jordan Station home of Terry and Mary-Ann Chayka when their son, John, was named general manager of the Arizona Coyotes last week. At 26 years of age, his birthday is in June, John becomes the youngest general manager of a major professional sports team in history. His drive for hockey excellence...that can be attributed to his father who has a major history of high-level athletics on the local level. He was a member of Grimsby’s Canadian Champion fastball team in 1976 and also served as captain of the then-Jr. B Grimsby Peach Kings in 1975. His knack for statistics, that was pure, natural born ability, says MaryAnn. “When he was younger, he did two things: he went to school and played hockey,” recalled Terry, adding that he installed a home ice rink each winter which was usable 65-70 days per year.
John Chayka is the new Phoenix Coyotes general manager. “He was on there every night.” And that effort paid off as John was about to follow in the footsteps of Hockey Hall of Famer Ken Dryden by attending the Ivy League’s Cornell University on a hockey scholarship. His on-ice career ended when a back injury persisted and he decided to hang up the blades at age 18. That decision, while changing his career path significantly, still kept it on a collision course with hockey. “John had great ideas
but he was just not sure what to do with them. He did an excellent job of networking to gather input from some of the best hockey minds on what kinds of statistics they would like to see measurable,” said Terry. His idea, which took a physical form in a new company, Stathletes, has been built with the help of his sister Meghan and CEO Neil Lane. When an idea draws the attention and input from names like Scotty Bowman and Mike Babcock, the hockey world tends to listen.

While the team thought they had something from the outset, they were never sure as in any market, supply and demand is king. They could supply, but would there be demand. The patio at Cibo will be open for business just time to coincide with the introduction of the Ontario Street Grimsby eatery’s new Spring menu. “The weather has been nice for a while, but not quite nice enough for the patio,” said owner Carl Ngo, “But we’ll be ready this week. For those evenings that are just a touch cool, we’ll also have heaters in place to ensure the comfort of our customers.” For added convenience, a new lunch counter has also been installed on the patio. “It is a style quite popular in other areas, so we thought it would be great to introduce it here,” said Carl. Of course, with the patio opening, immediately following will be the opening of the outdoor wood oven.”

The Niagara Regional Police started using bike patrols in Niagara West well over a decade ago with great success. The patrols allow officers to access areas of the community typically much more difficult to navigate, if at all. Calling future jazz stars... The next big thing may just be around the corner. It could be a young lady who daily strums away on a guitar in the basement of her parents’ home, or the group of friends who get together every now and then to jam. Get a gig in the right place at the right time, and magic could happen. The TD Niagara Jazz Festival is looking to create that opportunity for Niagara’s brightest young musical talent with the Jazz for the Ages Youth Competition. “We’re very serious about involving the next generation not only in our Festival but also in music in general,” says Peter Shea, co-creator and artistic director of the Jazz Festival. “The auditions are a chance for budding young musicians to meet and build relationships with professionals in the industry.” The Youth Competition is an opportunity for young soloists, singers or bands to showcase their talent for a chance to perform before live audiences at the Jazz Festival. It starts on YouTube, where interested performers are asked to share a link — no longer than five minutes — of their performance. Finalists in three categories — under 12, ages 13-17 and 18-23 — will be invited to audition for a chance to perform in the Festival. Auditions take place Tuesday, May 31 at Laura Secord Secondary School from 4-9 p.m. Winners of the Jazz for the Ages Youth Competition auditions will have a chance of a lifetime to perform alongside — and mingle with — professional musicians in the setting of an established jazz festival. The winning individuals or ensembles will be on the Youth Stage at Market Square in St. Catharines on Friday, July 29 and in Simcoe Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake on the Fiesta Stage on Saturday, July 30.

Passed peacefully away at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital on Saturday, May 7th, 2016 at the age of 97. She is survived by her son John and daughter-in-law Christine. She was predeceased by her husband James (1979), as well as, by her parents and five brothers and four sisters who constituted her family of origin in Killanne, County Wexford, Ireland. There will be no local funeral or visitation as the ashes of cremation will be buried beside her beloved husband Jim in Kapuskasing later this year. Her family is indebted to the dedicated staff who helped to make Deer Park, Susan’s Grimsby home for the past six years. As a generous and caring person, Susan would want you to touch someone with a random act of kindness in lieu of memorial flowers or donations.

Hats off to spring cleaners You know who you are. You are the kids, the adults, the hockey teams, but Scouts...you name it...who have turned out for these major overhauls of our local landscape. Maybe it’s a park you play in. Maybe it is just a roadway which you never travel at all. Maybe it is a gorgeous piece of waterfront where 40 or 50 bags worth of garbage somehow just appeared. A big crew turned out Saturday at Grimsby’s waterfront trail near Casablanca Boulevard to spruce up that whole area. It needed it. There other such activities before and there are still more to come. All are important, All are appreciated. Thanks to all the volunteers who make it happen. M.W.

Funny, I am quite certain there are those among our dedicated readers who would also suggest I am not much or wordsmith, either, but I do what I can. As I sat Tuesday listening to understandably proud parents Terry and Mary-Ann Chayka run through the process which led to the seemingly unlikely selection of their son, John, as the general manager of the National Hockey League Phoenix Coyotes, jealously overtook me at more than a handful of points. Being good with numbers really is a gift. If I had a choice, I would take having a knack for numbers over words. It is just more practical. But who could have foreseen that pure analytics could lead to a general manager’s seat in one of the most exclusive, traditional old boys club of all time? Terry mentioned during the conversation that, in his day, sports basically came down to who wanted it more. In Don Cherry terms, it was good old Canadian will to win which puts us at the forefront of hockeydom. At the same time, while I am picturing a good ol’ Canadian boy pummelling some soft Swede in the corner of a hockey rink, a scene from Modern Family pops into my head. Now I don’t get that, and I am sure there are a great many more of you out there who don’t as well, but that really doesn’t matter if it works. And it sure seems to do just that. “You don’t know, what you don’t know” Profound words from Terry when explaining not how all the data is arrived at. The research is the easy, if not vastly time consuming, easy part. It is the application of the data, the part you “don’t know” that creates the vast galaxy of possibilities. When Terry started talking about predicting talent and game outcomes, my mind quickly flipped to Vegas. If anyone of you out there are dabblers in
the sports better field, this would have to peak your interest. How could the Vegas sports books not be interested in a statistical analysis system which has selected the last four Stanley Cup winning teams? The company is only six years old, for Pete’s sake!. “You think (insert your favourite team here) is going to win the Cup next year, Uh, no, that’s not going to happen,” Terry said with a smile as he described the level of accuracy with which the John’s company, Stathletes can assess. My biggest fear is it works, I mean really works, cause Mike Babcock is into it and I would just really hate the Leafs to get behind some cutting edge program that gives them an advantage and makes them a decent team for 20 years. I don’t know if I could stand that. But seriously, the more I learned when researching this the more I was intrigued. The fact that a world leader walked right out of the Jordan Station mist is a great thing. Add in the fact it all encompasses the core passion which burns in the heart of the nation and it just flips into and overdrive of excitement. I’ve never met the man, but I hope to get a few minutes with him one day. I don’t pretend to understand his method of thought, but I definitely see the motivation and I wish him every success in his life’s path.

Lake Carling hull cracked with iron ore on board By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The Polish owned bulk carrier Lake Carling suffered a major crack in the hull on March 19, 2002, while passing though the Cabot Strait in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The vessel was loaded with 25,000 tons of iron ore and on a voyage from Sept Iles, QC to Trinidad when the large fissure occurred. The situation worsened flooding #4 hold and the 19-member crew worked to lessen the threat to their vessel.
Shipwreck Rescue officials sent extra pumps and survival gear fearing that the ship could just snap in two and disappear with little warning. A Canadian Coast Guard vessel came alongside and escorted Lake Carling to the Magdalen Islands There, a repair crew and divers, were able to fix the leak in 48 hours using neoprene, plywood and metal braces. This enabled the stricken vessel to
proceed to Quebec City for further survey and work. Lake Carling was built in 1992 and had been a regular trader through the Seaway for many years including trips, prior to 1993 and more recently, under the name Ziemia Cieszynska. In 2016, the ship was sold and renamed Maryland.

Aulward returns to its Grimsby roots While Blaine Prince is bringing home the company his father, Paul, started in Grimsby in 1967, that is about the only thing Aulward Graphics has in common with its original structure. “We have changed a great deal. Initially, when my dad’s company was called Inteprint, it only did stationary, letterhead, business cards and things like that,” said Blaine, who has been with the company since 1990. “Now, we can do it all – everything from large format items like banners and billboards to six-colour printing on our 40-inch press.” With Paul at the helm, the company grew by acquiring other firms - Rieger Press and later a typesetting
and film house to complement the core business. Blaine joined the company helping it grow even more and, in 2001, Aulward grew in location when the old 24,000 sq. ft. Fed Ex building in Hamilton was purchased. Paul passed away in 2012 and, in the subsequent years, Blaine had an interest in returning the company to Grimsby. The Hamilton building was sold last year, which paved the way to last fall’s relocation to 241 South Service Road. “We were very fortunate the location came up. It is a great spot. A lot of our team live in Grimsby already, so

it’s perfect for them,” said Blaine. “The highway exposure is awesome, too.” Now settled into the new location, Blaine and his team can set about driving the key services of the business. “We’ve really seen the large format printing take off for us. That’s anything from posters to billboards,” he explained. “We still can take care of all anyone’s printing needs - envelopes, letterhead, business cards - but we are much more than that.” And his quality of work and service are second to none. “All our equipment is state-of-the-art, digital format, current technology.
