That was what she expected. When she awoke, she was told the surgery went well, but the bad news was the basil cell carcinoma had spread necessitating the removal of her nose as well. case I couldn’t be Indiana Jones,” said Tomlinson, also a graduate of Grimsby Secondary School and St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School. “But I hated law school, so I took a comedy script writing course at Humber College and started

Among the items not expected: • part of the graft has refused to heal, slowing the entire reconstruction process; • ongoing radiation has destroyed her top teeth, repairs for which are not covered by OHIP, and; * The process of establishing the graft, allowing it to settle, sculpting and creating a prosthetic for her face was to be completed by the end of 2014. Current estimates will likely take this to the end of 2016. “The doctor suggested maybe doing the graft over, but I just could not take that again,” said Ida. “We’ve been waiting for the hole at the top to close up, but the sinus takes the path of least resistance. There is no blueprint for any of this. The doctors, at times have said they have no idea how to proceed. Those are tough days.” She said a big part of what makes her situation unique is her cancer could not be in a more visible place. “There are a lot of people with cancer, but you don’t see it,” said

File Photo Ida, who noted that besides the physical pain, loss of smell, taste and sight from one eye, the emotional pain is incredibly cutting. “It is very sad for me when someone asks me to move at a restaurant because they don’t want to be able to see me,” she said. With her debilitation, combined with that of her husband Randy Guarascia’s chronic back issues, the couple has had serious financial struggles as they fight this fight together.
“The medical people said they could save her life, that’s it. They don’t tell you anything beyond that,” said Randy, adding they have had to visit Community Care of West Niagara and keep a very tight rein on expenses. “We have a real problem with any added expense like the car needing an oil change, or anything extra,” noted Ida. Annette met with Ida and Randy and agreed to pay for her prosthetic when things got to that stage. Even this incredible news has now been complicated in that doctors say she will need to prosthetics now due the manner in which the healing has gone. Despite the setbacks, tomorrow is a massive day for Ida, one she has had marked on the calendar for months. “March 4 is debulking,” says Ida of the process to start to shape the graft on her face. “They’ve said she won’t look like the old Ida,” added Randy, “She will look like a new Ida.” This realizes, but she does have a hope. “I told them I want to look like Ellen Degeneres. I take a photo in with me and say, ‘This is what I’d like to look like’,” she says. “I am also looking forward to being able to see clearly: read a book.” She notes this as the debulking will include the shape of the bridge of a nose and prosthetic will be built with eyelgasses to help all in place. Active businessman, Abe Dueck, dead at 81 During his life, he retired many times, but there was no stopping Abe Dueck. The long-time Beamsville business man died last Thursday after a brief battle with leukemia. First getting his start in retail at a Kresge’s outlet in Windsor for a handsome $42 per week, Abe was bitten by the retail bug. While he had business ventures in Virgil, Cayuga, Fort Erie and Grimsby, his interests mainly centred on Beamsville with Dandies Dept. Stores, Dueck’s Men’s Wear, DarlieSue Shoppe, Home Hardware, Lincoln Furniture, Bibles For Missions Thrift Store and V&S. “Abe has been a key personality in downtown Beamsville for decades and a longtime member of the Chamber,” said Mike Williscraft, president of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.” “His legacy will continue to live on in town through the work he did and his family’s ongoing efforts.”

The facility is an open concept 1,000 sq. ft. space. There is lots of room for the centre’s groups which range from 5-10 dogs. Sandra’s motto, which

Her goal is to give pets and owners a balanced, happy and safe environment to coexist. “Pets are members of the family and need to learn to behave appropriately,” she says. WLMH future not a clinic When Hamilton Health Sciences talks about the future of health care in its ongoing dialogue assessing it catchment area’s evolving needs and how to deal with them, it is not looking at tomorrow or next year. Rather, the HHS board is looking 10, 25, 50 years down the road. Several inquiries were received at NewsNow’s office in the 24 hour before deadline after The Hamilton Spectator published a story which focused on a comment made at an Our Healthy Future session in Hamilton. The comment noted possible consideration of one of HSS’S “large” hospitals in the future, at least 10 years down the road. The thinking discussed outlines more of smaller, neighbourhood clinic style of health service, more immediate and more accessible for patients. Could make sense. But let’s be crystal clear. HHS is not, in any manner or fashion, looking to close WLMH. Period. Just the opposite, in fact. True journalists an endangered lot Did you hear about the big storm we got Tuesday? You might have heard about something, but what did you actually see? What transpired? A dusting...maybe? I just cannot believe how many people take the bait every time. The weather network trumpets a big storm is coming for southern Ontario and everyone heads to the grocery store of essentials ‘cause we’ll all be snowed in for three days. In the 20-plus years I have lived in this area, I can think of two times when a major storm actually materialized when predicted. Conversely, I can think of 40 when predictions fell flat. It’s 3 p.m. Tuesday. I just got an email from Enbridge warning of the blizzard imminent for southern Ontario and providing tips for exhausts clear. By Wednesday morning little more than a dusting. Come on people, don’t listen to the media...(except me, of course) they’re just trying to draw hits on websites and get Twitter followers by attempting to look like they are conveying vital, current information. Thing is, it also needs to be accurate, thoughtful and balanced. And that leads me to my second point this week. There has been a lot of pining and what I will describe as support after Sunday night’s Oscar win for Spotlight as Best Picture. The film, for those who don’t know, highlights excellent investigative reporting at The Boston

Many, from Hollywood heavyweights to Joe and Jane on the street have commented on the need for media to hold fast and maintain the high journalistic standards which built the reputation of the industry. This is laughable on many fronts, not the least of which comes when you have a red carpet show proceeding the awards when you have someone like Robin Roberts, who describes herself as a journalist, asking people what designer they are wearing. Anything that puts you on a credibility level with Ben Mulroney cannot be a good thing. The main obstacles in maintaining editorial integrity? The easy target would be to say corporate ownership. While true, it is not the main reason. Yes, corporate takeover in recent decades of dailies and weeklies have watered down content and marginalized quality at every turn, and not just of the content itself, but of the reputation.
We’ve seen it locally: with wraps on wraps, Page 1s that are actually Page 5s, sold front pages. I took those phone calls when these “as features” were added. It was not pretty, but corporations gotta make a buck, yes? So while the bucks flow, the staff cuts come...and this is universal in the newspaper game. When the hammer comes, it comes for editorial first. Management looks at editorial as a cost centre...no revenue there, they think. In meetings sure, there will be a lot nodding when talking about print or online someone will say, “content wins”. That is true, but the talk does not get backed up. And that, good reader, is a slippery slope greased by our friend the internet. When you add the need to compete with quick news hits to be first online, quality goes out the door. It’s fast. It’s disposable. It rarely has legs. Often it can be wrong or totally misleading as proper reporting has not had an opportunity to be done. Some look to the fact that corporations are the sole foe in maintaining journalistic integrity. That is just not so. Integrity, to me, means you are willing to take hit after hit to do the right thing,: publish the right story, run something you know an institutional paper won’t because they need everyone to be their “friend” to drive revenue. I hope the Boston Globe and the like make tons of money. They do a great job and deserve every penny. Their ilk is rare.
