Micallef resigns

West Lincoln Coun. Alex Micallef resigned his post at Tuesday’s meeting of council. Citing a need to spend more time with his family, Micallef told council he needed to step aside. Council will now decide whether to nominate a successor or go through a byelection for the Ward 3 post.

WL gets 5% tax increase

West Lincoln Council approved a 5.02 per cent 2016 tax increase at its meeting Tuesday night. This represents an increase of $47.51 on a home with an assessed value of $309,532. The budget includes a $920,000 item to replace the bridge on South Grimsby Road 6.

West Lincoln EcoDev plan laid out By Mike Williscraft NewsNow West Lincoln council had a consultant lay out a blueprint for future economic development Tuesday night, now they need a plan to execute the plan. “We’ve got a good road map. Now we

have to establish our priorities,” said Coun. Joanne Chechalk. “We’ve been working on this three years. We need to open our doors to people who can drive economic development but we have to decide what we want and what we

don’t want.” The mission statement of the project: “To develop a diversified economy through strategic action, collaboration and community engagement.” To achieve that, council agreed to adopt several key ini-

tiatives outlined in the 24-page plan. Among them: • invest in economic development, which could mean partnerships with Grimsby, Lincoln and/or Wainfleet, as well as hiring an ED officer; • Become ‘invest ready’

• Develop a land and building inventory, and; • Create a memorandum of understanding with Niagara Region. As well, there was also a series of priorities set out. Among the priorities:

Area archives work to highlight efforts Each year, the first full week of April is Archives Awareness Week in Ontario, and 2016 is no exception. Did you know there is an archives Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln and Glanbrook? All have interesting and unique collections to share. If you have ever wondered who lived in your home before you or the beginnings of the founding families from your community or the military records of those who served from your local area or even your own family history, then you can explore your local archives. The first meeting of

West Lincoln Historical Society took place June 1983 at St. Luke’s Hall in Smithville. Members had been collecting history of West Lincoln and when they completed the restoration of the Smithville Train Station, with a climate-controlled vault in the basement, the archives were established there. The train station was designated as a Heritage Building in June 1997. Over the years, eight experienced volunteers collected many items unique to the area, including a large original framed Tremaine Map from 1862 of Lincoln and Welland Counties, illustrating the location of Townships, land owners, schools and churches. During the month of April, volunteers will be hosting an Open House and participating in the Smithville Chamber of Commerce Home & Garden Show.

Bertie and Clinton has declared a refund from surplus in nineteen of the last twenty-three years and has provided insurance for the Niagara Peninsula residents since 1880.

Kin egg hunt in rose garden Soggy turf necessitated a move back into the rose garden for Grimsby Kinsmen Club’ Easter Egg hunt on Good Friday. Hundred of children and their entourages filled the groups for the egg hunts, a barbecue and raffle. “We’ve had it out on the lawn for many years, but it was too wet, so we moved it back to the rose garden, which works out great,” said Kin Rick Manners. The West German freighter Fleethorn was only a year old when it first visited the Seaway in 1973. The ship had been built at Rendsburg and completed on Oct. 19, 1972, for deep sea, and occasional Seaway, service. The 142.73 metre long vessel was sold and reregistered in Liberia as Cape Freels in 1974 and was back on the Great Lakes that year before becoming Lemar in 1983 and Mar Coral in 1987. Mar Coral was in a collision with the tanker Trade Resolve while inbound from Houston, TX to Maracaibo, Venezuela, and had to beached on Aug. 7, 1991. Mar Coral was refloated on Oct. 31 but its sailing career was over. It was re-classed as a “dumb barge” and moored locally. A fire in the engineroom on April 26, 1992, added to the damage and the hull was eventually sold.

At the Juravinski Hospital on Monday, March 28, 2016 in his 87th year, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. Son of the late Jack and Marie McLennan. Loving husband of Mona Katherine (nee Chapman). Father to Sara Ruth of New York City, Julia Marie of Calgary and John Stanley Chapman (Nancy) of Grimsby. Grandfather to Desta, Noelle, Natalie, Colin, Sydney, and Marcella. He graduated from Queen’s University, Meds ‘54, where he met Mona, his wife of 59 years. He devoted his life to his family and his medical career of Family Physician, Anaesthetist and Coroner. He was also an accomplished woodworker, sailor, and took great pleasure in his various cars and pets over the years. A great admirer of Winston Churchill and collector of his writings and memorabilia. Our mentor to the end. He is dearly loved and sorely missed.
