Beamsville Tim’s takes another step By Katherine Grant NewsNow The Tim Hortons proposed for the corner of Alyssa Drive and Ontario Street in Beamsville moved a step closer to becoming a reality after Town of Lincoln’s Committee of Adjustment gave the green light to a minor variance to the plan Tuesday night. The design for the coffee shop, complete with double drive-thru, has been significantly modified since being turned down at an Ontario Municipal Board hearing in January 2014 for being “too large” for the site.
But the modifications did little to appease the neighbours whose homes abut the site. There were only a few empty seats in council chambers and a number of those present voiced their objections about the coffee shop to the committee. “I would probably not have bought if I had known it was going in there,” said retiree Rod Sinnott. “This was to be our last home and we wanted it to be as close to our dream home as our budget would allow. Is Mr. (Gabe) DeSantis going to refund the $10,000 I paid for a premium lot?”
The Town of Lincoln has already accepted the donation of a small strip of land fronting on Ontario street for a “gateway” sign. This creates an Alyssa Drive frontage for the property. John Ariens, planning consultant for Homes by DeSantis, said the new plans address the four issues noted during the OMB hearing, “that it was too large, too close and too noisy and there wasn’t enough parking,” Ariens told the committee. There is still a double drive-thru but the building has been reduced from 139
sq. m. to 67 sq. m. of floor space. “We have significantly increased the amount of landscaping to soften and screen the site from neighbours,” said Ariens. Neighbours expressed concerns about noise and traffic congestion. Ariens noted a drive thru is an approved use of the site according to its commercial zoning designation. “This is a permitted commercial use that meets all tests of the Planning Act,” said Ariens. TIMS From Page 1 only one entrance/exit proposed out onto Alyssa Drive as that is all Region of Niagara would permit and that DeSantis has funded the installation of sidewalks on the north side of Alyssa Drive although not required by the town to do so. Claudio Balbinot, planning consultant with TerraResearch said he had been retained by the residents to address their issues. Balbinot said a car will be exiting or entering the coffee shop every 10 seconds or about 200 cars in or out during peak times which coincides with school hours when children will be headed to Senator Gibson School on John Street. Balbinot also noted that many municipalities have reviewed their planning policies in light of the impacts of proposals such as this one
and that Town of Lincoln should consider doing the same. He said the changes made in the proposal don’t go far enough in light of the close proximity to a residential neighbourhood. “Best efforts don’t trump good planning practices,” said Balbinot. Resident Alice van Overbeeke sent a letter to council voicing her objections to the proposal and also asked a question about truck traffic and its impact. DeSantis noted that Tim Hortons will be able to regulate times for deliveries to lessen potential traffic issues. Several neighbours expressed concerns about the height of the proposed fences – as high as 13 ft. in some areas – and suggested high fences in enclosed areas would encourage vandalism and present a place where garbage would pile up and
“drug deals could be made” creating unsafe and unsanitary conditions adjacent to their homes. DeSantis noted it was in everyone’s best interests that this area was safe and that the area could be blocked off to prevent access. He added he would hire security guards if need be. Fencing and other details to the design will be addressed in the site plan process. “This has been three-anda-half years in the making,” said DeSantis. “We have council support, hopefully it will be up before Christmas.” The application to allow a minor variance to permit a front yard setback of 10 metres where six metres is required was approved by committee. This is to accommodate a wide enough area for twoway traffic. There is a 20-day appeal period for the committee of adjustment’s ruling.

Friends, neighbours rallying for Rex Friends and neighbours have begun to Rally For Rex. West Lincoln greenhouse operator Rex Ge had all the contents of his Hwy. 20 greenhouse frozen when Niagara Peninsula Energy disconnected his power when his account was $360 due just over 60 days. A customer with an excellent payment record for 13 years, Ge was getting things in order after an extended trip to China to help ailing parents. The disconnection notice was put in his rural mailbox,which he had not checked since he had returned. The three soaring eagles that launched a career By Katherine Grant NewsNow It was a watershed moment for a young Jeff Pidsadny as he painted the now familiar swirls and loops that form the three eagles on the wall of the gym at Grimsby Secondary School back in 1989 – but he didn’t know it at the time. Pidsadny was back last week, 25 years later, to put a fresh coat of paint on the mural and to reflect a bit on the path his life took because of the encouragement of a teacher. “I had a great art teacher who came up with projects to challenge me,” said Pidsadny. “He was fantastic.” The teacher was Nick Njegovan and he encouraged Pidsadny to take a shot at designing the mural. “I wasn’t sure what I was doing but he said ‘don’t sell yourself short’.” Njegovan admired the
works of First Nations artist Ben Chee Chee and Pidsadny liked the looks of the Seattle Seahawks logo. The final design was a combination of the two. Pidsadny set up a projector, sketched it onto the north wall and painted it in the school’s colours: red, white and black. He enlisted some of his buddies to paint the stripes that circle the gym and the school paid him for his time. In the 25 years since he finished it, the ribboned image of the three raptors have soared over countless sporting events and school activities. The mural has been reinterpreted in three different ways and has become the school logo appearing on diplomas and jackets among other items. “It was really well received when it was finished,” said Pidsadny. But he has carried with him

a secret for the past 25 years – it wasn’t really finished. “There was a section where it just trailed off, I never finished it,” he said with a laugh. He rectified that last week as his son, Cayce, daughter, Maddie, and niece Brianna McGrath, gave him a hand in applying the fresh paint. Pidsadny would go on to study architecture and would later become a video game designer. “It was a match made in heaven: graphic design and architecture,” he said. It was a proud moment when one of his children recognized the design on a bag they saw when shopping in Burlington after returning to live in Grimsby. Things have come full circle as he himself now teaches video game design at Sheridan College. Creating the mural showed him he could be a designer. “It set me off on a career.”

They learn that attention to detail matters.” Hendriks looks for that attitude among his students; someone with the drive and the potential to thrive in a skilled trade environment. With about 30 per cent of university graduates unemployed and a real shortage of skilled workers out there, going into a trade is a great option for students who have what it takes. Among the students who brought home a gold medal is Mike Cernick. A Grade 11 student, Mike said he didn’t expect to win in the electrical installations competition. Working within the four-hour time limit, he was faced with doing advanced work on a control panel that included a four-way switch. “Retired electrician Jim Globe has been mentoring Mike,” said Hendriks. “Mike is really motivated to move forward.” Lucas Bradley built a dog house in his four hours, also earning a silver medal. “There’s a wide variety of skill sets needed,” said Lucas who had to build a roof and rafters as part of the project. “And they judge on accuracy, on how you followed the instructions as well as the finished result.” He plans a career in interior design. Andrew Mambella earned a gold medal in cabinet making. He built a bench without the

Darien Gomez’s photography skills earned him a silver medal. Darien had to bring in prints of photos he had already done as well as show his skills at repairing an older damaged photo. The students in the photography competition also had to photograph a surprise object which turned out to be paper. Darien made paper airplanes and created a composite. Lexie Laus and her partner George Bull earned a silver medal in TV and video production by creating a 30-second PSA video on cyber-bullying. The pair build a robot from cardboard boxes and dryer ducts and filmed Lexie wearing the costume as she confronted people engaged in cyber-bullying. There is another qualifier April 18 for the silver medalists and for those who earned gold, they will compete in the provincials in May. From

The students were among the best from across Niagara competing in the Skills Niagara Catholic’s 12th Annual Technology Skills Competition Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 11, at the Scotiabank Convention Centre in Niagara Falls. Almost 300 students competed in a number of different categories throughout the day. The winners from the various events, including those from BT, will compete at the Skills Ontario competition at RIM Park in Waterloo in May. Getting out there and competing gives the students an introduction to the realities of the working world. “It teaches them to recognize their errors, and they learn what is expected from them,” said Gerry Hendriks, technology and construction teacher at Blessed Trinity. But is also does so much more, added Hendriks who is in his 8th year of teaching. “It gives them a chance to hone their skills

Utility fraud targetting Grimsby businesses A utility fraud is circulating in Grimsby. The Niagara Regional Police Service is warning of a scam that is targeting local businesses. Businesses are being contacted and advised that they have an overdue balance with Grimsby Power, and if payment is not made immediately by credit card or electronic transfer, the power will be disconnected. This is a scam that has targeted businesses in many communities using the names of local utility companies. Police are reminding business owners to not rush into making any payments based on unsolicited phone calls. Businesses should verify any outstanding or overdue balances by contacting their utility compa-
ny directly using the contact information from a previous bill or the utility’s website and not rely on any information provided by the caller. Author series wraps up A pair of powerhouses will step up to the podium as the final installment of this season’s Grimsby Author Series is presented next Monday night. Alison Wearing, reading from Confession’s of a Fairy’s Daughter, and Krista Foss, reading from Smoke River are the last authors of the 2014-15. The evening begins at 7 p.m. Monday, March 30 at the Casablanca Winery Inn. Wearing is both writer and performer. Confessions of a Fairy’s Daughter tells the tale of her life as a child of the 1980s growing up in Peterborough, Ontario with father who was gay. The memoir is also a highly acclaimed solo performance piece that has won several awards. To be both performer and writer is a bit like shifting directly from fifth gear to reverse and back again; eventually the motor will burn out in protest. “I have learned to do it in spurts. I will do readings and perform and then hunker down and get some writing done,” said Wearing from Peterborough where she is presently doing a stint as writer-in-residence at Trent University. She is working on her third book, a novel set in Mexico where she lived for almost a decade. Wearing’s first book was the internationally acclaimed travel memoir, Honeymoon in Purdah, her account of a trip to Iran. She presently lives in Stratford. Author, teacher, and journalist Krista Foss has written a debut novel, that, while based on the events surrounding the land claim of First Nations people in Caledonia in 2006, is filled with human entanglements that surpass the issue of land. Writing a book was “absolutely” something she knew she would do, she said. She also said she was delighted to be coming to speak in Grimsby. For the 2015-16 Grimsby Author Series, organizers are trying something new. Ticket sales will be delayed until the series schedule is confirmed in late summer. Protect your car’s resale value It’s never too early to start protecting a vehicle’s resale value, especially if you hope to recoup as much of your vehicle investment as possible when the time comes to sell your car or trade it in for a newer model. The following are some ways motorists can protect the resale value of their vehicles from the moment the dealer tosses them the keys. •Keep all maintenance records. New cars typically do not require much maintenance. But drivers should keep records of all work and maintenance done on their vehicles, even if that work does not extend beyond routine tuneups or oil changes. Keeping maintenance records shows prospective buyers you prioritized taking care of the vehicle over the years •Don’t overlook looks. Looks can be deceiving, but new car buyers who eventually plan to sell their vehicles should do all they can to keep the car looking as new as it did the day it was first driven off the dealership lot. Much like homeowners benefit when selling a home with curb appeal, a car that looks good gives buyers the impression that it was well taken care of. But a dirty car or one with lots of dings and dents is a red flag to preowned car buyers. •Keep a clean interior. New car owners typically maintain some strict rules with regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one wants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become with regard to allowing food and drinks into their cars,
and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehicle. Maintain a clean interior whether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. •Drive defensively. It’s not just what you do to a car but how you drive the car that can affect its resale value. Driving defensively reduces your risk of accident, and an accident-free preowned vehicle is a top priority for potential buyers. But driving defensively also reduces wear and tear on your vehicle, as over time constant stop-and-go, aggressive driving takes its toll on vehicle engines and other components. •Periodically examine the vehicle history report. Today’s preowned car buyers know to ask for a vehicle history report before buying a car. If your vehicle history report contains any suspicious or inaccurate information, you may be forced to sell the car for less than it’s worth or delay selling until you can have any issues corrected. That won’t necessarily happen overnight, but you can avoid dealing with a host of issues all at once by periodically examining the vehicle history report. Any discrepancies on the report can be brought to the attention of your insurance company, who can then work with you to correct the issues and restore your vehicle’s reputation. Resale value may not be foremost on the minds of new car owners, but the earlier buyers begin to factor resale value into their car-care routines, the more they will benefit down the road.

Planning issue? Look to TO There are a few things to make clear about the proposal before the Town of Lincoln for a Tim Hortons, with a drive-thru, at the corner of Ontario Street and Alyssa in Beamsville. If you don’t like the proposal, and there could be any number of reasons why one may oppose it, directing anger at either the developer or the Town is simply misplaced. Ultimately, as it was with the first go-round, almost assuredly this will end up at the Ontario Municipal Board. Developers, generally, play by the rules laid out by the provincial government and municipalities have an obligation to listen to any proposal that comes their way. They cannot dismiss proposals out of hand. Now, they may oppose a proposal but even in that case, a municipality has to follow the process. The real bone to pick is with Queen’s Park, people. Planning guidelines are laid out for downtown Toronto density levels and issues. The rest of Ontario is left to deal with the fallout. M.W.
Business community shuffles deck The Rubik’s cube of downtown businesses in Grimsby will be taking a few more turns as the next few weeks roll by. And not to be outdone, Main Street Jordan businesses have been doing their own version of “the shuffle”. There has been a lot of speculation as to what is happening as a host of locations have been vacant or in transition for months so, now, some things are coming into focus. In no particular order, here’s what’s up. Home Hardware in Grimsby: great to see a transport truck in front unloading items on Monday. They have been working on that spot for weeks, on and off, but now it is looking like late April to see that longtime hardware store location re-open. Over on Olive Street, your neighbourhood is getting a cool new pizza joint, You Had Me At Pizza – the co-brainchild of Clayton Gillie/Beth Ashton of August Restaurant and Tony Macri of Cibo Osteria. Knowing these folks as well as I do, it will be good, and fun, not necessariliy in that order. Coffee Culture, corner of Ontario and Main Street West: It appears this is going the way of a Thai food restaurant. The operator is a fellow from Oakville who has another restaurant there and he will be renovating the upstairs of the building to be additional office space for another tenant(s). Former Family Video spot in Grimsby Mews
MIKE WILLISCRAFT Plaza: For many, the plaza is called the M&M Meats plaza due to its brand recognition (great for them). The former video location will soon be the new home of Royal LePage Niagara Real Estate Centre, which will be moving from its longtime home in the heart of downtown. Former Grimsby IDA Pharmacy: A couple of things are underway there as I understand it. There is a clearance centretype shop in place now, which will soon be joined by a high-end furniture consignment store. The owner of the consignment shop is currently operating another store. It is unclear if this will be an expanded operation or transplanted one, but it will provide a great mix for the downtown core. In Jordan, Ninavik Native Arts and Tintern On Main/Jack Men’s Wear have traded homes. If you have not been in to see either new set-up, they look awesome! The clothing stores have a much more open and expanded display area and have taken full advantage of that. The Zooma Zooma Cafe
has been transplanted to Westcott Vineyards, 3180 Seventeenth St. Ninavik has relocated nicely into the former clothing stores and after some careful moments unpacking and setting up for display the huge selection of works, it looks amazing. Then you have Inn On The Twenty creating a lobby area in the same building where the clothing shops were, so that will be another accent for the east side of Main Street Jordan. Phew! I’m tired just typing all that. There is a major change in Beamsville as well, with a new coffee shop renovating the former Tim Horton’s location in Beamsville Towne Centre. No opening date there and I’ll work on getting the brand moving in, nothing confirmed so I won’t guess. And I’m not forgetting about good old Smithville...readers will know we published a story last fall about the new grocery store going in and all the changes at the Village Square Mall. I hope all goes well for the transplants and welcome to the new folks. Alderman defends need for firefighter training facility Dear Editor, I would like to respond to your comments last week when you questioned the need for a training complex for our firefighters. The training complex and upgrades to our two stations are required to meet the needs and training of our dedicated firefighters. As you are aware, I have been employed at the Hamilton Fire Department for over 25 years so I do understand the changing expectations and legislation of the fire service. You need to ask the questions – is the facility needed and how will we pay for it? It is becoming increasingly difficult for many fire-fighting services in North America to maintain their volunteer service. The dangerous and unexpected nature of the calls require the employer to provide relevant training so that the volunteers are prepared to meet the needs of the community. The new training facility will provide a location to train our men and women to meet the expectations of the job. We are convinced that by providing the proper training we will be able to recruit and
Letter to the Editor retain the firefighters to be as safe as possible in serving the community. The question about cost is important and this is one example of growth paying for approximately 65 per cent of the total budget. Through the use of past, present and future development charges these facility upgrades will cost one third of the total cost. These development charges are mandated and specific to the fire service and must be used for those needs. The present budget does not include any possible grants from other levels of government, partnerships with both private and public sectors or potential sponsorships. So this is a situation where growth in the town is supporting the increase in service costs. In my opinion, the approval of this facility meets the needs and requirements of our fire service now and into the future. If you have any questions please contact me – enjoy your day, Ald.
