Former Vineland resident now a Senator Friday March 18, 2016, was a great day for Beamsville District Secondary grad Peter Harder. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named seven new members as a representative of the Government to the Canadian Senate. Among the new Senators is V. Peter Harder, formerly of Vineland. This position was previously known as the Leader of the Government in the Senate. Harder has had a long and distinguished career in the Canadian civil service including serving as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and as a Senior Policy Adviser. In the newly reorganized Senate, there will be a DEemphasis on political affiliation and Harder, who has served Canadian prime ministers on both sides of the aisle, is an “excellent choice” to head the transition of the
PETER HARDER Upper Chamber, said Niagara West MP Dean Allison. Harder, and the other new appointees, have agreed to sit as “independents” and will represent minority and regional interests from across the country. One of Harder’s first tasks will be to steer the first Liberal Party budget of the Justin Trudeau era through the Senate. Harder is a graduate of
Vineland Public School, Beamsville D.S.S., the University of Waterloo and Queen’s. He moved to Ottawa as a parliamentary intern and rose through the civil service spending time as a foreign service officer, Deputy Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and Deputy Minister of Industry before being named as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Harder has represented Canada at conferences all over the world and has won numerous awards. In 2000 he received the “Prime Minister’s Outstanding Achievement Award for Public Service”. Then, in 2012, Harder received the “”Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.” His parents owned and operated Harder’s Dry Goods for many years in Vineland. That store is now part of Heida’s.

Grimsby Beach is one of the most storied, chronicled and unique places anywhere in Ontario. Because of that, people in the tightknit corner of Grimsby sit up and take notice when anything having to do with their neighbourhood comes up at the town council table. Last month, town staff hosted a public meeting at the Grimsby Beach Hall on Grand Avenue, with about 80 residents turning up to hear what was being
considered – namely a possible Community Improvement Plan (CIP) and consideration for making the area a Heritage Conservation District. Town planner Michael Seaman said there is a detailed process as to how either program may evolve. Through consultation and input from the community a CIP could include a number of aspects such as: • opportunities to support, through regional and munici-
pal Smarter Niagara Incentives Program funding, a coordinated facade and publicly visible landscape improvement program inspired by the history of the area; • opportunities to support, through regional and municipal Smarter Niagara Incentives Program funding, a coordinated program of public realm improvement inspired by the history of the area; • opportunities to establish a CIP plan and design guidelines to guide facade and

Blades dissect South Kent for Juvenile title The Lincoln Blades Juvenile team defeated the South Kent Chiefs in the OMHA finals three games to one Saturday at the Fleming Centre. In the decisive game the Blades came out flying putting a ton of pressure on South Kent with the Chiefs netminder making many miraculous saves keeping the game scoreless until a laser from the point from AJ Boodoo - assisted by Ben Humble - put the Blades up 1-0 in the final minute of the first period. Once the second period rolled around the Blades got into penalty trouble giving South Kent the opportunity to tie up the game 1-1. After the flood between the second and third periods, the boys were back playing their style and flying. Phil Evans put the Blades back on top with a short-handed breakaway goal, assisted by Jesse Starfield, early in the third period and the boys never looked back. A few moments lat-

Clint takes Smithville Legion chili title Smithville’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 393 sure smelled great Saturday as entrants competed for chili supremacy. Entries came in throughout the afternoon before judges Karen Black, Paul Keizer, and Jim Wilcox made their decision. In the end, Janet Clint took home the top prize while Kathy Miller took second and Liz Gould earned third. The event was just one of a roster of events which keeps Branch 393 - which got its charter in November 1946 a busy place. Ken Hunter, the

Curly B sank March 12 claiming life of one sailor The former Great Lakes tug Curly B. sank in a tragic accident on the Hudson River on March 12, 2016. One sailor was confirmed as dead and two more were missing in a collision with stationary barge near the new Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson north of New York City. Curly B. had been built at Houston, Texas, in 1956 and operated on the inland rivers for the Sioux City and New Orleans
Shipwreck Barge Line as Waverley. It was based at Clayton, MO and pushed barges up and down the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Waverley was sold to the Great Lakes Towing Co. in 1971, brought to the Great Lakes but never operated in their colours. The ship was sold and renamed Brother Collins in 1974 and Curly B. in 1980
before leaving the inland seas for Mobile, AL, via the Mississippi system, in the fall of 2006.
Now in saltwater work, it became The Chief and then Specialist for coastal towing. The tug was
operating under the latter name when it sank earlier this month with the apparent loss of three lives.

Saturday March 12, the two teams meet again in Grimsby with the Kings again doubling their rival 4-2, with goals scored Luca McLaren, Spencer Pontes, Kade Marleau and Pergentile. The Peewees will now be playing in the Ontario Hockey Federation championships April 8-10 in Mississauga. Doing so can create noticeable swirl scratch marks. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the body panels and hood. · Keep a separate rinsing bucket to clean the sponge or washing mitt so that dirt is not mixed into the clean, sudsy water. · Consumer Reports suggests using a soft squeegee to remove most of the water on the body of the car after washing and rinsing.

Sudden car trouble is something no driver wants to experience, but many a driver has been driving down the highway only to feel his or her vehicle start to sputter. Cibo owner ushers new direction When Carl Ngo and Eli Jankiv worked together in Switzerland years ago, they never could have guessed they would team to drive Cibo Osteria in a new direction. Ngo and his business partner Phoenix Majumder have taken over ownership of the popular Grimsby eatery and have steadily brought in changes to the menu and business practices. Ngo works with Jankiv, Cibo’s chef, to develop a Euro-cuisine style menu with French, Italian and Swiss influences. “It is a small world. We never expected to be meeting up in Canada,” said Ngo. As well, Ngo and Majumder have enlisted the talents of chef Alain Claivaz who works directly with Jankiv to develop special recipes and presentations. “Our goal is clear,

What a run?! Anyone would be hard-pressed to recall a bigger sports weekend in this area than this one past. Friday night the Grimsby Peach Kings fail to close out Glanbrook in Game 6 of their Niagara finals only to bounce back with a clutch 3-2 win on the road in Game 7 to take the next step on the road to another Schmaltz Cup. Then not one, not two, but three Ontario titles were claimed as Grimsby’s Pee Wee and Bantam teams as well as the Lincoln Blades all claimed Ontario championships all on successive days Friday to Sunday. The Pee Wees won on the road in Nobleton while the Bantam took their series at the Peach King Centre and the Juveniles closed out theirs at the Fleming Centre. What a run?! Congratulations to all involved! Thousands of combined hours on and off the ice by players, coaches, parents and family members resulted in these successes. The efforts of all involved make them great ambassadors for their organizations and the community as a whole. M.W.
Tuition? Could money be better spent One of the things I always dreaded more than getting old itself, was the day when I heard the words, or a reasonable facsimile of same, emanate from my mouth, “Well back when I was a whippersnapper....” Truth be told, I’ve already had a few of such moments, more than I’d like. My fear was based on the experiences I’d had with people I considered too old to be in touch with what was “really” going on when I was a kid. Now I characterize being a kid, for me, until I was 22 or 23. Until that time, after I was done with college and had what I considered my first real job, I really knew jack about life. I’m not sure that I have gained much in the 30 years since, but prior to that point, most kids are still in “do what you want” mode. Heck, I could have stayed in school, gone anywhere, done anything with no serious impact on anyone or anything, so decisions really carried no ramifications. As anyone past that stage now realizes, with the passage of time they impacts escalate. I used to liken it to keys on my keychain. First you only have your parents house key. When you move for school, you add your own apartment key. Then maybe a car key gets added and then a mailbox key. Then you graduate and you get an office key for your new place of work. And so on. Anyways, I am off the

When I say I don’t get the euphoria some feel about the provincial Liberal government saying they are going to push in a direction of free tuition for college and university students it is a well considered point. Before I go on, I would like to note a point our fine Wynne government. It sucks. Really it does. There is no other way to put it and I apologize immediately for they crudeness and vernacular. The Liberals have been in power for a long time, so it is easy to think all the things I say are antiLiberal because I have not had a chance to hammer on Tory policies, not since Mike Harris, really. Ernie Eves didn’t have much time to direct any policy on his way out the door. The sitting government is the only target since they have all the opportunity to make bad decisions and, wow, Team Wynne has repeatedly proven itself excellent at that feat.
With free tuition, what I don’t get, is when did it become a bad thing for students to absorb some debt along the way. That’s life. That is how one learns. Back when I was a student (I still hate the way that sounds), I had zero money going in. My mom had little money to support me, but did what she could and I hated to ask her for a dime. Most of the time throughout my three years in college, I juggled at least two jobs with my studies, with much of the time covering three parttime jobs...and I managed to fit in a pub night or two along the way :) My point is, I didn’t get a dime of OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) and came out of school the way I went in - broke but with no debt. And boy, I knew what work was then. I am all for being reasonable and supporting youth get a leg up on life, but handing out free tuition is not the way to go, aside from the fact the province cannot afford it. This whole weird millenial thing of wanting things yesterday and wanting them free is a cycle that has to end, not be expanded. User pay is the fairest manner of the government collecting money. Period. If this is a direction society chooses to go, and its not just to curry favour with young voters, there could be a happy medium, but just rolling over and handing out freebees is not the way to go, it never has been and never will be.

Another resident ready to get dirty: you? Dear Editor, I am ready to do whatever we can to get the restored WLMH we were promised almost 20 years ago. I do believe Bobby Dyment was right in saying that so long as we are not a Provincial Liberal riding, we will be brushed aside. Perhaps if we had been given the hospital we need we would have looked more favourably on the Liberal Party at the ballot box, who knows. Athough, now that the Provincial Liberal Party has sold it’s soul to the big labour unions, they no longer need the votes

The Provincial Liberal government had no problem finding money to build a separate building for the local LHIN, which, when it was formed, allegedly had only a six year mandate. Why would this agency need it’s own building for only six years? I understand there are 14 such agencies now in the Province. How many of them have had a building constructed for their own use? The money spent on that local building should have gone into our hospital.
This town and the surrounding communities have in the past given tremendous support to this hospital and continue to do so. How many other communities contribute so much to the purchase of needed equipment for the hospital in
