11th hour approaches for Gateway initiative By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Next Thursday’s meeting of Niagara Regional council may be the last opportunity to preserve an important tourism-oriented presence at Grimsby Gateway. Brian Purdy, who has chaired an ad hoc committee working to maintain some sort of marketing program at the Gateway, said an ongoing push to resurrect a tourism kiosk has met with a great deal of support from virtually all, except those who are being asked to fund it - Niagara Region. The Region snuffed out its tourism booth due to what it said was too high a cost, among other issues, but Purdy said all community partners, on a region-wide scale,
want to see the service maintained. “I got a few minutes to speak at the Niagara Tourism Summit back in December,” said Purdy, who will address regional council at its regular meeting on March 30. “After my presentation all delegates were surveyed with 100 per cent saying they wanted to keep Gateway open. Because it is on a regional scale, all thought it made sense for Niagara Region to cover the cost and that is should be manned.” Despite industry sentiment the Region “should” pay the freight, Purdy has made it his business to sharpen the pencils of all involved before the regional officials hear what is likely a final pitch for the service. “I was able to negotiate an incredible deal
with Dan Dominick and the Tim Hortons people, who were just great. That has allowed us to put together a budget, based on a five-year commitment, that would only cost each municipality in Niagara $12,000 per year,” said Purdy. That expense would allow for three video screens for each municipality to showcase their events, staffing seven days per week, and a dedicated interactive website. He estimated all could be in place by late April to early May. “This really is so much more than just a tourism marketing presence. The Grimsby Chamber of Commerce tracked the volume of visitors and their inquiries for year,” said Purdy. See GATEWAY, Page 2

Opponents host first meeting The first in a series of meetings hosted by opponents of West Lincoln’s proposed spending of $23.6 million on a MURS project was held Saturday night. The MURS project has been years in discussion and study mode with a $14 million facility being rejected only to have the $23.6 million option approved by council about six months later. The council chambers have been packed several times with opponents of the project’s cost, not the
idea of the project itself, says protest organizer Paul Wiebe. Several weeks ago, Wiebe took to the parking lot of West Lincoln township hall to draw attention to his concerns about the project - namely that council is ignoring several other major needs in the municipality. “Nobody is trying to say a new facility at the arena site would not be a good thing. We just want council to step back, keep an eye to the whole municipality and the very real needs
throughout, and reserve some of the influx of cash they say is coming to cover other costs. Right now they have all their financial eggs in one basket,” said Wiebe. At Saturday’s meeting, Coun. Dave Bylsma was on hand to answer questions about the process to date, noting the requests for proposals and tender estimates will be discussed by council at it April 18 meeting. The group will be meeting at the Smithville Legion again this Saturday night at 8 p.m.

Major fundraiser set for art gallery this Saturday Visions - a fundraising auction and gala to be held this Saturday - is the Grimsby Public Art Gallery’s biggest fundraising event of the year. Proceeds from the auction will support educational programs and care of the art in the permanent collection. This year, in honour of Canada’s sesquicentennial, the gallery will be re-visiting centennial year celebrations, in particular Canada’s coming of age party in Montreal at Expo67. Join revellers this Saturday, March 25 at Visions 2017: ArtExpo67 for a worldclass exhibition of all things Canadian. Culture!Art! Music! Cuisine! It was all there at Expo, proudly displayed for the world to see and experience – and 50 years later we are even prouder to be here celebrating Canada. Entertainment, activities and items in-
spired by Canada at ArtExpo67 will be featured. Tickets are $35 per person, available at the gallery. Air Cadets earn distinction For the second year in a row, 62 Grimsby Phantom Squadron is flying high. The organization was honoured March 3 with the Leading Seaman Philip C. Gainham, RCN Memorial Award representing the Most Proficient over-all Air, Army or Sea Cadet Corps in the Hamilton- Niagara Area. The squadron earned the award for the first time in 2016. “62 Grimsby Phantom Squadron with over 135 cadets has steadily grown and become a model cadet unit in Canada in all areas of cadet
training, community service, and performance,” said Commanding Officer Major David Leonard. The aim of the cadet organization is to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship, and leadership; promote physical fitness; and stimulate an interest in the activities of the Canadian Forces. Young people 1218 years of age may enroll in cadets at any time during the cadet training year. The group meets at the Mountain Ridge Community Centre on Friday nights from 6:30-9:30 pm each week.

Lincoln Chamber honours best The Lincoln Chambe of Commerce is set to honour its top businesses next week at its Outstanding Business Achievement Awards. The event will be held at Inn on The Twenty’s Windows Banquet Room. It is sold out again this year. “This has proven to be a great event year after year,” said Chamber president Mike Williscraft commenting on the annual sell-out. Businesses have been nominated in three categories, based on the number of employees, with a series of other awards also to be given out.
“The OBAA’s acknowledge and celebrate high achievements in Lincoln’s business community. This gala honours six finalists who are true leaders in the three categories and to be a finalist is in itself a great accomplishment,” said event cochair Gynette Smith. CEO Scott Holmes describes the company, started in 2011, as an Internet Service Provider that provides fast, reliable wireless internet to commercial and residential customers all over
the Niagara Region. NWIC (Niagara Wireless Internet Company) has over 1,000 monthly active customers in the Niagara Region. MURS, high schools’ plight similar It seemed poetic that the huge maple tree in front of Grimsby Secondary School crumbled across Kidd Street last week, rotted from the inside out. For my money, that is exactly what has been allowed to happen to the institution still standing the shell still looks formidable, but it is the inside, the part that needed investment of time, money and resources over the last decade, where everything went south. Next Tuesday at 7 p.m. will be the swan song for GSS, Beamsville District Secondary School and South Lincoln High School. The ARC committee at least attempted to listen, but all the research done was clearly slanted to project a particular view to closures. With a greased track to allow for proper notice of closure for SLHS this fall, it was clear nothing was going to slow down the tidal wave headed toward a super school. I have noted this before, that the District School Board of Niagara tipped its hand early last fall when a seemingly innocuous inquiry came to the Town of Grimsby asking about an unused road allowance running through the property which had been long forgotten about. If the school board has its legal beagles working their due diligence back decades to track every detail of land ownership, one can be sure they are
MIKE WILLISCRAFT not looking to renovate and reinvest. They are looking to parcel up and sell to the highest bidder. And no, it is not going to be parkland. After what’s going on with Southward Park, Grimsby may never be able to afford another park anyway. The debate about the state of local high schools is not a far cry from the debate that rages about West Lincoln’s MURS issue. I think I can state as many times as I choose that nobody opposes the plan to get improved facilities in West Lincoln. Needed. Overdue. Time to get something done. BUT, it is just horrible planning to not just go all-in with every dime of incoming money you have, but create more debt by debenturing over 30 years (where 20 is generally the acceptable max) and ignoring all other facets of townships needs along the way. The “opponents” of the MURS are not sitting there thinking the current arena, meeting space et al is hunky dory.
Nobody has said that. Not once. With the schools, everyone knows - and could see for a long time - something had to give. A key difference, where the arena in Smithville simply aged, the schools were pretty much ignored on several key fronts which greased the track for a slide of enrollment and the coronation of Blessed Trinity as the king of the block. And why not? Everything is shiny and new. They have actual programming choices. They even have a full range of sports teams and extracurricular activities. Remember those public system folk? The three public high schools used to have those things, but they have fizzled away, just like the hopes of a significant investment and possible resurrection of the once-mighty institutions. But no, come Tuesday, starting at 7 p.m. at the DSBN headquarters, the unkindest cut of all will come. Maybe they could get the piper from the Legion to play Amazing Grace, or a bugler from the cadets to offer a rendition of Taps. The new school needs to happen now. The three have been run down to the point reinvestment is not prudent. The MURS, build it, just get your head on right and don’t blow your financial future just so you can have a splash pad like Grimsby.

CREAMY BEEF BAKE INGREDIENTS • 1 lb lean ground beef • 1-7-1/2 oz can tomato sauce • 2 cloves garlic, minced fine • 2 tsp sugar • 14 oz can tomatoes •3 cups broad egg noodles, cooked and drained •6 oz cream cheese, cut into cubes •1 cup sour cream •6 green onions, chopped • 1-1/2 cups old cheddar cheese, grated • Salt and pepper to taste •1/4 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese DIRECTIONS Brown meat and drain.

Add tomato sauce, garlic, salt, pepper, sugar and tomatoes. Cover and simmer over low heat for about 45 minutes. Preheat oven to 350. Combine hot, cooked noodles with cubed cream cheese. Stir to melt cheese. Add sour cream and green onions. In a greased 3-quart baking dish layer meat sauce, noodle mixture and cheddar cheese, alternately. Top with grated parmesan. Bake, uncovered for 30 minutes. Serves six.
