Quad-blaze night first of its kind for West Lincoln By Mike Williscraft NewsNow It was a night West Lincoln firefighters – and virtually every surrounding fire department – will never forget when four active fires broke out overnight Saturday. “No, we’ve never seen anything like it,” said Kevin McIntyre, West Lincoln’s deputy chief. “We were all in on the first call that came in around 11:40 p.m. Soon we had three structure fires on the go. The fourth call came just as we were getting things under control at the first fire so we got our guys over there.” In his memory, McIntyre said he could only recall one or two times when two working fires were underway simultaneously. The fire calls came in for Vaughan Road first; South Chippawa Road just before midnight; Reg. Rd. 8 just before 1 a.m., and; finally Westbrook Road (the municipal border between West Lincoln and Hamilton) just after 3 a.m. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is conducting an investigation into the fires as is Niagara Regional Police and Hamilton Police. Mcintyre said the only thing he could see each incident had in common, which he was very appreciative of, was that none of the structures had anything living in them. “The first fire was in an empty house. It was dark when we got there. The only thing left is the foundation,” said McIntyre. The South Chippawa fire was a barn. “There was no livestock, but about 150 round bales of hay. We had to bring in some

Community rallies to help Rex Residents and fellow business operators alike are rallying to support Rex Ge. Ge is the man who operates a greenhouse and nursery on Hwy. 20 at Mountain Road whose stock and heating/watering system was all destroyed after hydro was turned off due

to a $360 which had gone overdue. Ge has done his best to refuse help, holding out hope his hydro provider, Niagara Peninsula Energy, comes around and agrees to compensate him. An NPE official told NewsNow last week they don’t believe they have any liabil-

ity, adding measures they the company took – which included placing disconnection notices in Ge’s rural mailbox – were sufficient. While there are a host of circumstances as to why Ge was paying less than close attention to his bills – he had had a perfect

The cost estimate to replace it – it was deemed non-repairable – is

Fevez, who very much acts as Ge’s representative since language can still pose a barrier, said many have asked what they can do to help Ge in the short term since all his stock which would normally be on sale for Easter and beyond is gone. “We are looking to set up an account for him if people want to help him out. Calder razed to clear way for new fire hall Grimsby Town Counci has given the green light to a new fire Station 2, which will include a state-of-the-art firefighter training facility at the site where Calder School stands today. “It’s something we have been talking about for a while,” said Mayor Bob Bentley, noting grants may be available to cover some cost. The facility is to be part of a $6.5 million overhaul of fire department infrastructure said Fire Chief Mike Cain in a separate interview. “The reviews done showed Calder would need about $170,000 in renovation. It is far past its prime,” said Cain, adding a 2012 facility needs assessment showed the need for several changes was evident. “Station 1 will also be expanded in the bay area to make room for more trucks. The need to have a tanker above the escarpment was also part of it. The study validated what we thought.” A half-dozen community groups currently call Calder School home. They were give notice of eviction last week. The Town let the groups know they would attempt to help them find new quarters. While the new Station 2 is a necessary measure, Cain said the disruption to the groups is unfortunately a part of it. “Right now we just have a garage there. The guys can’t even wash their hands when they get back from a call. There is no washroom,” said Cain. Cain noted that part of the longer term plan which resulted from the assessment includes a new hall in the town’s west end but he said three key developments – Greenbelt review, possible Livingston extension and urban boundary expansion – will determine much about that project. “It will not be your stereotypical burn tower. It will be a building in which we can simulate fire conditions with flame and theatrical smoke. It will also have classroom space.”

Savings for Grimsby; bonus for Big Brothers, Big Sisters More than the lights were shining brighter over at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln as two companies showed up this week each with a cheque for $2,618 in hand. The total was a $5,236 donation. Larry Vaughan, of GAMS, Ground Aerial Maintenance Services, located in Niagara Falls, was the man who got things rolling. Town of Grimsby was replacing its street lights with new LED lights and using the services of GAMS which in turn gets its lights from Erth Holdings Inc. located in Ingersoll. Vaughan, who says he has a soft spot for BBBS, approached Scott Garton of Erth with a proposal: for every light replaced, Vaughan would donate $1 to BBBS and he challenged Garton to match it. He readily agreed. “Erth was a great group of guys to deal with,” said Vaughan, who was joined at the cheque presentation by his brother Jim. For the town’s part, Bob Leroux, public works director, says the new lights will save the town $120,000 annually in energy consumption and maintenance. “There were some challenges,” said Mayor Bob Bentley. “But take a look at the town at night from the escarpment.” Vaughan says he is using the Grimsby project as a pilot and hopes to do this again for other BBBS organizations.

$10K and 20 years: Great year for Kin mini-putt tourney A sold-out roster of 30 teams, along with a host of sponsors, enabled the Grimsby Kinsmen Club to reach its $10,000 fundraising goal with the Greater Grimsby Mini-Putt held throughout the downtown core Sunday. “The first year we were just hoping to raise $1,000,” said organizer Bruce Bond. “We would never have thought it would grow to what it has. It has been a great ride.” Golfers spent five hours covering 18 holes at a series of downtown eateries, starting with registration and breakfast at Grimsby Legion Branch 127 and ending at Teddy’s Food, Fun & Spirits for the wrap-up dinner and awards. Rowin sank in Java Sea with loss of seven lives By Skip Gillham For NewsNow At first glance, the Dutch coastal freighter Rowin would not seem like a candidate for Great Lakes trading. The 64.80 metre long by 10.42 metre wide vessel could carry a payload of only 1,150 tons of cargo and was much better suited for short runs around the coast of Holland and Northern Europe. Rowin was built at Foxhol, in 1967 but found a spe-

I do not believe that the ship ever came back to our freshwater lakes. Rowin was sold within Holland in 1973 and was renamed Ijsselmeer and then to interests in Indonesia in 1977 for service as Berkah. The ship

then sailed to Southeast Asia where it finished its career. On Aug. 22, 1994, the now 27-year-old carrier got caught in bad weather and capsized in the Java Sea near Masalembu Island, Palau, Indonesia. It was on a voyage from Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia to Ujung Pandang on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Seven crew members perished while only nine sailors on board were rescued.

After a short illness, in his 95th year, Kenneth passed away peacefully at Albright Manor, Beamsville, on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. Beloved husband of Margaret for 70 wonderful years. Cherished father of Gary King (Phyllis), Wendy Meyer (Peter), and Brian King (Lora). Loving grandfather of Nathan (Alison), Rebbecca, Michael, Kevin (Amanda), Steven, and Holly. Born May 27, 1920 in St. Marleybone Parish, London, England. When Ken was two, the untimely death of his father caused him to spend his youth in the care of the Society for Waifs and Strays at the General Charles Gordon Boys Home. After a year’s training on a four-masted sailing ship, Ken entered the Royal Navy in 1936, where he spent the next fourteen years. Ken served in the Mediterranean and at numerous Fleet Air Arm bases across the U.K., including being interned for a year in Sweden during WWII. He then transferred to Yarmouth Canada and married his wife Margaret in 1944. Ken & Margaret lived first in Hamilton, then Grimsby while Ken worked at Stelco’s #2 Rod Mill in Hamilton until his retirement in 1986. As a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Grimsby, Ken served many years as an usher, was the treasurer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and was an original member of the Grimsby Benevolent Fund in its early years. After a stroke in 2011, Ken spent his last years in the wonderful care of his second best home, Albright Manor in Beamsville. Visitation was held at STONEHOUSE-WHITCOMB FUNERAL HOME, 11 Mountain Street, GRIMSBY (905-945-2755) on Sunday. Training facility great, but.....? Big week for firefighters in Niagara West, yes? Huge joint effort to fight four active fires simultaneously in West Lincoln – for which all involved deserve a massive tip o’ the cap – Grimsby launches promotion for its boot drive campaign, and Grimsby also gets council go-ahead for a new Station 2 above the escarpment. And not just any station, but one which includes a full firefighter training facility. Now NOBODY questions the dedication and appreciation of our firefighters, but that last bit is a head scratcher. Grimsby has been running a Cadillac operation for years...look no further than town hall...but with all the amenities the town has built, if this kind of coin is available, how about rolling taxes back instead of looking for ways to spend. Every 20 years, watch for two fronts A lot of people have said some very nice things in the last week and we appreciate every comment. Sure, I would like to say it was a stroke of brilliance to put two front pages on last week’s edition, but I don’t think it was. My dummy, the design for pages which we follow for layout of the paper, was already done. However, I kept thinking to myself how unfair it felt to be running the story about Rex Ge’s greenhouse – and effectively his financial ruin after being put in deep freeze over an overdue $360 hydro bill – on an inside page. I just kept thinking they were both front page stories. Really, I have to thank Gen Brady at Grimsby Chrysler who had booked a back page ad last week and Kathleen Caughlin at H&R Block, whose full page I will run on the back on occasion. Both were good with running inside in that special circumstance, and that was how we got started. The result and reaction of that move was pretty much insane over the next several days, starting with some of our drivers having heart attacks when picking up the papers at CanWeb. We started getting texts at home from drivers saying our trusty printer had made a mistake and printed the pages out of order or something. That transitioned to carriers and their parents wondering everything from what went wrong to which side of the paper was the “real” front so they would know which to leave facing upward when leaving on porches and such. Once readers got a hold of it, forget it. Between calls, texts, emails and people making

MIKE WILLISCRAFT a point to drop into the office to say, in essence, “that was really cool”, I received nearly 250 comments over three days. Things calmed a bit by Monday. The only other time I saw that done because of news content was the last time I did it back in the early 90s when I was running the Barrhaven Independent. It was a similar circumstance news wise with stories that deserved prominence. Also, similar was it was independently owned. You simply would never see a corporation give up a revenue opportunity like a back page in place of poor old content. Heck, they can’t resist filling their one front page with ads, IF they even have a front page anymore. No, while copycatting with things like magazines can happen quite easily, I don’t see corporations running out and giving up their back pages tomorrow. But let’s get to the meat, the impetus, for the two back pages from last week. First, the situation with the 30 or so tenants being evicted, or an attempt at it anyways, from 575 Main St. W. has been a textbook example of what a landlord should not do. The tenants are looking for places to move as quickly as possible and things are

happening to make their situation more difficult on a day-to-day basis to ensure as hasty a move as possible. But the whole thing could have achieved the same result just by following a simple process of proper notice and order. But go figure. With Rex Ge....well, it is heartbreaking to see a man reduced to a state where he cannot speak when he looks around at what used to be his business. Rex and his wife stay busy from sun up to sundown moving things around and throwing out dead plants. He has had the boiler looked at. That will be a $70,000 touch to replace. The technician said it is not repairable. A very nice man – John Keizer – stopped in who read about Rex’s ordeal. He spent a day in the front portion of the greenhouse cutting out the areas of pipe which split when water froze and welded in new pipe. Cost? Rex forced him to take $100 but he didn’t even want to accept that. That was incredibly generous. Many people I spoke to also want to know how they can help this man rebuild his life. We may be organizing an event of some kind, but if you know of people with a greenhouse, some product to help him rebuild his business would be good. He really wants nothing except for Niagara Peninsula Energy to step up and realize cutting off his power was not right and to compensate. That just won’t happen. If it ever does, I will make that is front-page news, but sadly, I don’t think it will ever come to that. Writer: Town doesn’t start at John Street, Beamsville Dear Editor, Why is the Town of Lincoln still supporting a developer wanting to build a Tim Hortons drive-thru at the southwest corner of Ontario and John streets intersection in Beamsville? The Town’s own Committee of Adjustment rejected the application back in March 2013. And then in January 2014, the OMB vicechair, Steven Stefanko, sent a clear and pointed message to Town Council by stating “These matters, coupled with the evidence presented in this case, lead me to the inescapable conclusion that Town’s Council’s decision cannot be endorsed. In the final analysis, the proposed Tim Hortons is

simply too large for the site...” However, since the OMB’s refusal, Town Council has ignored these decisions and continued to support the developer in an attempt to find alternate ways to allow the drive-thru on the site. As a creative solution, the Town has agreed to accept a “gift” from the developer for a Beamsville gateway feature conveniently associated with the site. By accepting a strip of land along Ontario Street for the purpose of the gateway, the developer is permitted to have its frontage for the site along Alyssa Ave (the John St. extension) instead of Ontario Street. This eliminates many

Letters to the Editor setbacks, but not all issues related to the drivethru. The irony of this strategy is that the Town is NOT allowing the construction of the gateway itself be placed on the small strip of donated land. Instead, the Town’s planning staff is requesting the gateway be built on the proposed Tim Hortons site because it is actually required to buffer the drive-thru and parking lot. Understand that a wall in nearly the same spot was initially proposed and required for the exact same reasons. All that has changed is that this wall is now

a “gift” in dedication to the Town. Any intelligent citizen will realize that Town Council has accepted this “gift” to help the developer fight the OMB decision made against them and make a mockery of the OMB process. One must ask why would the Town be willing do this? Since when was there ever the need or suggestion that a gateway feature be placed “randomly” two kilometers away from the QEW at the intersection of John and Ontario streets? Isn’t there already a gateway feature welcoming visitors to Lincoln on the highway, and since when did the Town of Beamsville start at John Street?

Will the drive-thru proposal make it back to Council for a vote? Will Town Council demonstrate integrity and respect the OMB’s previous decision or decide to push through and accept the “altered” application? All indications are that Town Council is willing to wager more taxpayers’ money at yet another OMB hearing and hope the Vice Chair will not recognize the revised drive-thru proposal was contingent on Town Council accepting this so called “gift” for a gateway feature. Why is the Town willing to get this involved in seeking a “creative” solution to by-pass an OMB decision? John Marinelli

Reader praises local business for being helpful and honest Dear Editor, Grimsby is lucky to have great local service providers. Hello Mike, I had an experience this week that I wanted to share with you. I recently moved from the Grimsby area to St. Catharines where I used a trusted mechanic for years. We so often hear on the news of people being “taken for a ride” by mechanics and franchise auto service establishments and now I know why these shows exist. Recently, I was in the Welland area on a sales call (I sell dental equipment). I was driving my ‘09 Ford Escape when it began to make a loud clunking noise while driving. As I cautiously drove it became louder and more intense (or so it seemed). I wasn’t sure if it was safe to drive home to St. Catharines

on the highway – so I pulled into a shop to see if they would investigate and advise whether I could make it home or not. The service manager immediately took my vehicle for a drive to listen to the noise I described. When he returned he pulled it right into the shop and put it up on the hoist. After watching him tug at the wheels and look here and there under the car and tug and pull on a few more things – he came to me and said it isn’t anything obvious but I have one more thing to check. Five minutes later he returned to say I needed new struts. He told me that Ford recommends changing them at 100,000kms and I am at 174,000kms. He said it was a three-hour job and the cost would be $1,200. He did say it wasn’t a safety issue

- just noisy and I could in fact drive it like that. He was kind enough not to charge me for the inspection. I drove away and immediately called my mechanic in Grimsby (Noel Pendlebury at Clausens). He said to come right over and he would take a look. I trust Noel completely – he has always been fair and conservative. When I got there he said let’s go for a little drive. He got in the driver’s seat and put the vehicle in reverse, moved about two feet and heard the klunk. “Is that the noise you are talking about?” he asked. “Yes” I replied. He moved forward two feet and back two feet again. He said “we don’t need to go for a drive – I think it’s the stabilizer bar but I want to put it on the hoist to be sure”. Well, he was absolutely right! The

That’s a huge difference between new struts for $1,200 and $20 to tighten a stabilizer bar. I know in future I will always return to Noel for his professional and fair opinion. Even if it means towing it there. I just wanted to say how lucky a great community like Grimsby is to have local service providers, and not just Noel, who are looking out for folks’ best interest and not looking to line their own pockets. Instead of cutting off his house, another someone decided to cut off the electricity to his greenhouses, to cut off his livelihood in the coldest February on record. In my summation of this situation these ‘someones’ should be fired! Further NPE must undo what they have ordered to be done, and restore Rex Ge’s livelihood by repairing the consequences of its actions. Mr. Ge, according to the story, cannot afford to hire lawyers to go to bat for him. This is a lucky break for NPE. Now it can seize upon this opportunity to rectify the boiler, the frozen water and fertilizer pipes, the hydroponic units without the added legal costs. It won’t replace the labour he has lost, but it’s a start for him to recover his business. Instead of such narcissistic behaviour in the future, I am suggesting that NPE devote some time to learn how to champion a program here that has been operating in several USA states for several years. It is called the Lift Up Debt Reduction

The company would send someone with an overdue electric bill a letter so stating, and remind them nicely to pay it. It works! Just like NPE did for us. Instead, what did NPE do? NPE, according to the story, more than doubled the overdue $360 Bill by adding a $400 security or surety charge becuase his electricity had been disconnected. Adding further insult to injury is unconscionable in this case. It appears that Niagara Peninsula Energy has created a monstrous error. This is how it gets back on track. Fix the damages it caused to Rex Ge’s livelihood, and fast. Admit it was very wrong to do what it did so callously. Caring for your customers brings happy customers, which is better than killing off businesses. I expect NPE to do the right thing now, and remedy Rex Ge’s situation fast. And I thank Mike Williscraft for covering this ‘front-page’ story so very well. Mike gave more good suggestions for Niagara Peninsula Energy, which should turn over a new leaf, now. Thinking outside the box Dear Editor, Mike, Mike, Mike. Just when your readers think they have figured it out and think they have seen it all – whether it was the best election coverage bar none, great work on the save WLMH campaign, real features and not just the puff pieces – you throw us a curveball like last week at us. Two great articles. Two fronts. Brilliant. My friends and neighbours all think you have the best paper in the area by far but we don’t want it going to your head, so I will be brief. Please, please, please keep doing what are doing. It can’t be easy, but I also know I don’t want to get stuck with only a corporate paper.

You would never see a corporation think outside the box that way and, if they did, it would only be covered up with front page flyers. I have tried to make it a point to let businesses who support you know I am supporting them because I have seen their ads in your paper. I really hope more businesses recognize what you are doing and get in line with their support. Surely they must hear what I hear when it comes to how much people really like what you are doing. hat an incredible turnout we had at our February 27th Breakfast with Local Politicians at The Ramada Jordan Beacon Harbourside! The breakfast buffet was enjoyed by all.
