Fire destroys trailer at Caistorville golf course By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A Sunday morning fire completely destroyed a trailer at Caistorville Golf Course. Niagara Regional Police and West Lincoln Fire Department were called to the golf club at 1129 Caistorville Road just after
11 a.m. on Sunday morning. The trailer was already fully engulfed in flames and burned right down to the frame. Neighbours who had company arriving at their home just before 11 a.m. said they saw nothing out of the ordinary, but flames and firetrucks were on the scene when the
guests left about a half hour later. There is a possibility that a surveillance camera may have caught something at the scene but no information on that was available at press time. See FIRE, Page 3

Town of Grimsby to implement new team approach at town hall While Town of Grimsby officials are happy with the municipality’s internal communication processes, they are looking to evolve their system. CAO Derik Brandt told members of the town’s Finance and Administration Committee Monday that there is a need reinvent staff’s communication processes due to changes that will be coming. “We’re a bit behind the curve, but our system works well,” said Brandt. “But things are about to radically change and we have a need to adjust.” Part of the reason for change, he said, is projected new systems for the town IT sector. In his report to the committee, Brandt noted, “Creating a means of connecting the various needs of departments to serve the public with IT/IS and prioritizing those needs is critical now in

Police seek help nabbing graffiti artists The Niagara Regional Police Service is seeking assistance from the public to identify the person, or persons responsible for a rash of graffiti occurring in the Town of Beamsville. Over the past several months graffiti tags, and other vandalism has been appearing on walls and playground equipment in the area of John
Street in Beamsville with Senator Gibson Public School targeted to the tune of thousands of dollars in damage associated with the removal and replacement of permanently damaged equipment. “In the past month the vandalism has been more frequent, once or twice a week. The photos (sent to NewsNow) are of graffiti since last Thursday
March 9. Also damage to trees planted in the “quiet area” necessitated their removal,” said Neal Orlando, Acting Divisional Commander, 8-District. “The black tagging was overnight of the 9th. The orange paint was over this past weekend.” Police are asking the public to review the photographs of the vandalism, and if able to iden-

High winds fell maple at GSS’s door High winds last Thursday knocked down trees and fences as well as closing roads all across southern Ontario. While the Burlington Skyway was closed to the west, Grimsby saw several huge trees felled including an old maple right at Grimsby Secondary School’s front door -
which forced a road closure until it could be cleared - and on Rosedale Street, which also took out a hydro pole knocking out power from 2 p.m. to after midnight. There were no reports of injury, but considerable property damage was reported across Niagara West.

Watoto choir at Smithville United this Sunday
Smithville United Church will be the scene of a concert performance with a special message this Sunday, March 19. The Watoto Children’s Choir will perform a 7 p.m. program, bringing with them their outreach message from
their Ugandan community. The choir is comprised of children who have all suffered the loss of one or both parents. The experience of travelling on a choir helps the children to develop confidence and boldness, as well as broadening their worldview.
Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presents Watoto’s vision and mission by sharing personal stories, music and dance. Smithville United is located at 116 West St, Smithville. Admission is free. Offerings only with proceeds to the choir.

Kinsmen mini-putt tops $10K plateau The Champs held off all challengers to retain their title as the champs of the Greater Grimsby Kinsmen Mini-Putt. A sold out field of 30 foursomes competed Sunday, trying their luck at a series of mini-putt holes set up at participating downtown Grimsby eateries. The day started with a breakfast and registration at Grimsby’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 127 and wrapped up with awards and dinner at Teddy’s Food, Fun & Spirits. This year, $10,150 was raised to bring the grand total of funds raised by the highly popular event to an impressive $115,000 donated over its 22 year history.
“The Champs” are now two-time defending champs of the Grimsby Kinsmen mini-putt. Kinsmen organizer Bruce Bond, centre, made the presentation to the winning foursome (L to R) Mark and Karen Bridges, Mary and Larry Champ.

Dear Editor, I’ve been told I sound like a broken record when I rant about school closures. My rants are universally ignored but here I go again. I went to high school in Oshawa. I was lucky enough to have a terrific history teacher named Mr. Leslie. One of the things he said that have stuck with me was his statement that ‘We are NOT building schools correctly.’ That was 60 years ago. Being a smart ass teenager I never asked him how we should be building schools. I don’t know what his ideas were. Over the years I have speculated that it had to do with keeping the core of a school in place and moving parts of it as populations shift. A Lego affect if you will.
My question is why can’t a school building be designed to do this? Classrooms plugged in and out of the core. Architects of the world can it be done? Rather than moving students why can’t we move teachers to smaller schools? They may be making visits to multiple locations during the day. I suspect a limo service for teachers would be cheaper and create less pollution than the raft of school busses we see on our streets every working day, (stat holidays, P.D. days and Christmas, Easter and summer vacations excluded.) Clearly left for eons to deteriorate, several major holes have been visible in the roof for months. Surely the Town must have a property standards statute for heritage properties? I can just check with the Grimsby Heritage Advisory Committee. Those folks know everything about town’s heritage by-laws. Oh wait, it was disbanded in favour of hiring a staff person. Great! Why use willing volunteers when taxpayers can ante up?

Shared facilities option for high schools Dear Editor, I agree with Sandra Hall that all the evidence points to a situation in which the entire ARC process seems to be organized to give the appearance of giving consideration to the wishes of the public that the DSBN is charged with serving while engineering events to attempt to justify a predetermined decision. An obvious indication of this is the lastminute speaker addition to the agenda of the Feb. 28 DSBN meeting. It certainly appears that when it was determined that the three scheduled speakers would speak against the motion to close all three schools in West Niagara, it was necessary to add someone speaking
in favour of closure. To the surprise of most of the audience, the last-minute addition was the Lincoln Mayor Easton who, unlike Mayor Bentley of Grimsby, advocated losing the only high school in her town. I am happy to be a Grimsby resident. The mayor of my town fights for our public secondary school as does the West Lincoln Town Council. In her letter, Sandra Hall suggests that she may transfer her daughter to the Roman Catholic Separate School system. She certainly has a right to do that as those schools are publicly supported, although they have the right to exclude non-Catholics if they so choose.
However, Sandra is not fully aware of the situation. She states that she will “transfer her tax dollars to support the Catholic Board”. In that respect she is about 30 years too late. In the late 1980s, the system of designating which board would receive your tax dollars was changed. Since then, all education taxes are placed in one education fund and then doled out to the various boards. (There are four publicly funded education systems in Ontario.) You may find it interesting to know that Roman Catholic Separate School students comprise 32 per cent of the Ontario student population, yet the separate school boards

always receive more than 32 per cent of the education budget. A study was done a few years ago by an organization called Civil Rights in Public Education using Ministry of Education figures and covering the years 2005 to 2010. That study revealed that the separate school boards received up to 38 per cent of the budget. In those years, it translated into an extra payment to the separate schools of a low of $700 per student per year to
a high of just under $3,000 per student per year. By the word “extra”, I mean that is the amount by which the per pupil amount given to the separate boards was greater than the per pupil amount given to the public boards. The solution is to force the public and separate boards to share facilities, something that, according to the DSBN, the separate board has so far refused to do. If facilities were shared, there would be one viable secondary school in
each town – Beamsville, Smithville and Grimsby. That would retain the sense of community that will not exist in the super school that will not be located in any town proper. I have written letters on this topic several times. My voice is ignored. It is necessary for the three town councils and the DSBN to be very vocal about the situation and to hound our local MPP and the Ministry of Education until a successful resolution is reached.
