Grimsby Fire dusting off shovels By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Grimsby Fire Department and other town officials will are getting ready to break ground on the planned Station #2 project. At Monday’s town council meeting it awarded the contract for the project, which include a new station as well

as a firefighter training centre, to Bromac Construction and its $4.6 million bid. The project has been up for discussion as part of the Master Fire Plan completed in 2009. In 2012, the Plan was validated through a needs assessments and a more formal design for the new Station

#2 - located on Mountain Road near Elm Tree on the former Calder School property - started to take shape. “Progressing through various phases of conceptual, preliminary and final design phases over the past few years, last night Council approved the construction of GFD Station #2/Fire Training

Facility,” said Fire Chief Mike Cain. “The facility will serve as a rural operations centre of GFD; as a Training Centre, and; as the Primary Emergency Operations Centre for the Grimsby Emergency Management Program.” The new station will provide See STATION, Page 2

From Page 1 a front line defence for firefighting, said Cain. “Beyond the bricks and mortar of traditional fire training facilities, in June 2015, Grimsby Fire Department, the Ontario Fire College and the OFMEM Academic Standards & Evaluations entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for the direct delivery of OFC courses through the Grimsby Regional Training Centre,” said Cain. “Based on the GFD belief that fire prevention is the future of our industry, our course offerings will focus on establishing the province’s first Centre of Fire Prevention Excellence.” For many years,

prevention has been a major focus of GFD’s public awareness campaign. “There are three lines of defence in the fire service: public fire and life safety education; fire safety standards and code enforcement, and; emergency response,” said Cain. “The best way to fight a fire is to stop it from starting. Investing in enhanced fire prevention and public education also serves to preserve the volunteer service delivery model; a system that saves our community millions of dollars annually.” Cain said the change in philosophy is needed and has proven the most cost effective. “For generations

we have glorified the firefighters sliding down the brass pole and racing to a fire. There is no glory in supressing a fire that could have been prevented,” said Cain. “Council’s commitment to this project reinforces their vision to establishing a fire service delivery model that is both cost effective and prevention centric and programming that focuses on proactive measures to reduce the likelihood of fire within our community.” With incidental costs estimated at $500,000 and renovations at Station 1 costing $650,000, the total cost of the GFD work will be $5.76 million.

300-plus take heritage home tour The Friends of Lincoln’s History are ecstatic with the success of their first heritage home tour. The inaugural tour, held on Saturday, drew just over 300 visitors and the hall at Jordan Station United Church had a steady lunch crowd, too. “Many compliments were given for the wonderful restorations homeowners have done and the pride they obviously take in their stunning historical homes,” said Mary Lou Garr, event organizer. “Friends of Lincoln’s History tour organizers are grateful to those homeowners for sharing their houses with the public who now have a new appreciation for the community history they reflect and

have discovered that history can be very very interesting.” “We were delighted with the response

especially since it was our first attempt at organizing a tour. It required massive amounts of

She then made an offer to purchase a property, and was disappointed to learn that her mortgage application had been turned down.

What happened?

The bank did not like the property that she had purchased. The property was in poor condition and needed extensive repairs - which the client was aware of and prepared to do. She just would not have the funds to make the repairs immediately. Her plan was to buy the home, and then renovate as she accumulated the funds to do so. The client didn’t not qualify for a renovation loan, or a line of credit, as she had already reach her credit limit with this mortgage application.

A host of dignitaries turned out last Friday to cut the ribbon on a new 40,000 sq. ft. pre-commercial greenhouse at Vineland Research Centre, built with the support of a $5.76 million FedDev Ontario grant. The greenhouse will support 125 FT jobs. GPAG burst at seams with new exhibition At The Seams opens to the public at Grimsby Public Art Gallery this Friday, June 11, from 7-9 p.m. This group exhibition brings together established and emerging artists whose work provides visual exchanges between craft, contemporary art and constructions of identity. Given that both craft and what has commonly been thought of as women’s work are often defined along gendered lines, this exhibition will address and explore realm of the “feminine” and the body through the use of textilebased works. Employing materials and methods that are affiliated with the genre of craft, such as beading, knitting and sewing, artists are asked to respond/ give consideration to the following themes in their respective worksthe definitions of “women’s work”; notions of performance and/or labour in regards to gendered work; the performing body; the role of textile art as a form of communication; the tension between fine art, craft and its various intersections; the relationships between the textile arts and other forms of documentation; and familial geneologies.

I would like thank all of our participants and supporters. Our hockey program continues to grow each year and this season was no different. This success is not possible without the generous support from our sponsors and volunteers. Our on-ice achievements this season were numerous. Both our Major Peewee and Major Bantam teams were OMHA Champions. The Major Bantam travelled to Hearst, ON and captured the OHF Championship as top “A” team in Ontario!

Minor Bantam won the prestigious International Silver Stick Tournament. There were many other accomplishments and victories as our travel and local league teams represented Grimsby with pride and our house league program is one of largest in the region. Workers put the finishing touches on the newly repaved Grimsby Benevolent Fund parking lot on Saturday afternoon. The work necessitated the closing the retail shop and drop-off area for two days. It is back up and fully operational once again.

Salute to event volunteers NewsNow is not taking credit for the near-perfect days enjoyed by the inaugural Heritage House Tour in Lincoln and Festival of Arts in Grimsby last Saturday after wishing them luck in this space last week. We’re just glad they got it. Both events - the first ever for Lincoln’ tour and with the new home at the Peach King Centre for the festival - really could not have gone any better. Perfect weather, steady crowds and great results. How does it get any get any better? The public goes to these events and browses around, maybe have a snack and a “refreshment” of some sort and head home. Often, little or no thought goes to the hundreds of volunteers which make these community events fly. So this week is a salute to all the behind-the-scenes people...and you know who you are! Job well done. M.W.

Nothing wrong with old-style standards I’m not a big fan of swearing. It doesn’t really bother me if other people run on a blue streak but, for me, pass. Being a mama’s boy, I think it comes from my mother and my grandmother. The nastiest thing I ever heard my mom utter? Piffle! ...and that was if she was really steamed. Grandma? One time I heard her use the term, “guff”, as in “don’t take any guff” from those people when I told her I got canned in 2012 from the paper I built. I never heard her speak ill of anyone. Ever. There’s not many people like that any more. I had a bit of a chat with my son last week. Both my kids use the language a little more liberally than I would like them to do. They certainly aren’t locker room level, which is a good thing and I never wanted them to be me. They need to be their own people, if you know what I mean. And I don’t want to come off as a choir boy, either. I can let it rip with best of them when I hit my boiling point. It’s just pretty rare. I’ve got too many moving parts in my life to allow one thing to effect me to the point of blowing my top, so it does not happen often...but it does. My kids, like everyone in my family, adored my grandmother. It has been a few years since I have written anything about her. She past away in the home she was born in at the age of 104. Whether it was the old

One lady from Grimsby even went online to post a note at the funeral home as she felt she knew my grandma through my columns. I note all this because my grandma was a zero tolerance lady. If you got one look over her black framed, horn-rimmed glasses, you didn’t get a second look before action was taken if something was not right. When I was eight or so, I got the Ivory soap treatment for something I had said. Really I think it had to be just some form of back-talk because I didn’t know any swear words for a couple of years yet as nobody in my life’s fish bowl at that time swore...

at least not in from of children. I still remember the result of that: standing in her dining room after being dispatched to the bathroom to grab the soap. I really wish I could recall my infraction as I am sure it would be laughable by today’s standard. But that taste, and those splinters of soap wedged in my cheeks...YUCK!! Lesson learned. Move along. I am definitely not going to harp on about how kids today are SOOOO different than back in the day. I think that is true of just about every other generation. It takes a while for a new “normal” for teens to set in and we sure do have that. I only had three rules for my kids, other than the obvious ones, no wearing pyjamas out of the house, no ball caps on backwards, no baggy skater pants. Yes, there is personal preference there and to each his own, but those were my rules. In my conversation with my son I explained my theory on swearing. I just told him there are lots of other ways you can express your feelings without being stereotypical. There may be a time and place. If you’re with your buddies, go nuts! But habits have a way of seeping into other areas of life. I never wanted to swear because I never wanted to make a mistake in front of my mom or grandmother. I still don’t. There’s nothing wrong with old school standards and a good old-fashioned fear of Ivory soap!!

HOW WE GROW: The Municipal Comprehensive Review will look at the land we have available across Niagara, and will ensure we have enough to sustain our expected growth to the year 2041. It will also examine how that land is distributed throughout Niagara. HOW WE FLOW: The Water and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan will ensure Niagara has the infrastructure to provide critical water and wastewater services to our growing region in a sustainable and financially responsible way. HOW WE GO: The Transportation Master Plan will look at how we currently travel in and around Niagara and how we can improve our transportation systems, including options for walking, cycling and public transit, to better serve Niagara’s future needs. GET INVOLVED: Residents are invited to attend a Public Information Centre in their community to learn how each of these projects contribute to Niagara’s overall growth plan for the next 25 years, and how you can have your voice heard. The Transportation and Water and Wastewater studies follow the Master Plan process as outlined in Section A.2.7 of the Municipal Engineers Association (MEA) Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Oct 2000, as amended in 2007 and 2011). The Master Plan will be filed under Approach #2 of the MEA Class EA Approach for Master Planning.The Master Servicing Plan will satisfy the planning requirements for Schedule A, A+ and select Schedule B projects and provide the basis for future investigations of identified Schedule B and C projects.
