Despite Ombudsman’s censure,
“I’d do it again,” says Ald. Steve Berry By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Much like in 2016 when the Ontario Ombudsman cited significant Municipal Act infractions by Grimsby Town Council, members were shaking their collective heads Monday night at a second censure. As noted in the June 1 edition of NewsNow,
the Ombudsman cited council for a series of infractions related to conducting meetings inappropriately behind closed doors. A series of guidelines were suggested, many of which were implemented with bylaw changes at Monday night’s meeting. While there were some similarities to the 2016
Ombudsman discussion, where it differed was with an admission that the rules have changed and best practices must change - with considerable debate about just what the rules are. However, Ald. Steve Berry was unapologetic. “That December 5 meeting, I called that. I thought it was needed.
I’d do it again,” said a defiant Berry, citing his long tenure on council. “Things have been done this way for a long time.” Berry noted, at that time, he had information which he deemed important to inform other members of council as council acts as the shareholder of Grims-
by’s hydro interests, Niagara Power et al. Ald. Nick DiFlavio told Berry he did not need to take the sole blame for the issues cited by the Ombudsman. “There have been plenty of meetings over the years and always in closed session because we were always told it See MEETING, Page 3

Evan’s Ride this Saturday Evan is ready to ride, are you? Evan’s Ride for Autism is set for this Saturday in Smithville with registration starting at 9 a.m. at JW Sheldrick Transportation, 2942 Thompson Road. Participants can ride an 11 km course, or take another lap to make it 22 km for more of a challenge, says organizer Len Sheldrake, whose son Evan is the event’s namesake. Chris Biggs of 97.7 HTZ-FM will be on hand to emcee the proceedings. “There’ll be music, tons of snacks, a bike tune-up area and a warm up before,” said Sheldrake. “After the riders are back we have pizza and sandwiches for lunch, post-ride massages, a kids play zone and lots more. It is always a great day.” One in 68 children are currently diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, according to Autism Speaks Canada. The prevalence of ASD has increased over 100 per cent in the last 10 years. Autism is now the fastest growing and most commonly diagnosed neurological disorder in Canada. ASD is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental influences.

Ace finally caught!
Grimsby Legion Branch 127’s Catch The Ace fundraiser wrapped up last week with the winner taking home over $30,000. On hand for the presentation were (L to R) Legion president Simon Saulnier, winner of $30,441 Chris McLaughlin of Grassie, fundraiser chair Janet Slade and Branch 127 secretary and co-chair Corine McGill. The Catch The Ace program raised $30,000 and Legion members will decide at their AGM on June 27 who those proceds will be donated.
Cyclists to Smithville on Saturday This is a bit of a charity oriented page this week, so let’s keep that theme going. This Saturday is Evan’s Ride For Autism, which will be hosted in Smithville from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. One of the many worthy causes in our midst, Evan’s Ride named in honour of Evan Sheldrake who’s interest in cycling evolved into this event, with the help of his father Len who got it off the ground. Participants can check in at 2942 Thompson Road and set off on an 11 or 22-km ride before taking in some tunes, snacks and even a post-ride massage. There will be a raffle and top fundraisers can win a bike. All in all, a great time with sun and exercise built in and all funds raised go to local autism-related programming. Business community steps up...again Let’s just cover some fun stuff this week, shall we? Meester Insurance... LOVE YOU GUYS!!!! There are a few people in Niagara West who realize how much local businesses do to keep our communities afloat. Really, even some business owners don’t realize the full extent of how much is done. There are precious few events which happen anywhere in Niagara West which I don’t help with in some way or form...not counting stories. They aren’t charitable. That is just how it should be. The ads for any community event are always subsidize in one way or another...as much as I can afford really, as the name of the game is raising money for these groups. And the groups come in all shapes and sizes, kids to seniors, large to small clubs, highly organized and not-so-organized, they all need help. The real change in this area - although there was always fundraising to some extent - came about 20 years ago when cuts in transfer payments from the feds trickled down into the provinces and from the provinces into municipalities eventually getting to all the service clubs and organizations which enjoyed operating and programming grants of one level or another. It did not take long for the plethora of spaghetti dinners, trivia nights, car washes to explode not as money generators for supplemental programming but for base operational dollars. Competing for dollars is now a daily occurrence for our service clubs and
MIKE WILLISCRAFT charitable organizations. We are very, very lucky to live in an extremely benevolent area. When there is a need, the community comes through like clockwork. But this does not mean it is easy. There are a lot of organizations out there, and new ones have popped up over the years which also require community support to survive. As the need grows, the available dollar in the community does not. I see it all the time, and by all the time, I mean almost daily. A seniors group comes in with a poster for our window. I take information for our Around Town page notices and, perhaps, a news brief if I can get it in. I don’t even ask if people want an ad anymore. I do greatly appreciate it when an ad gets booked as it allows me to do other things for that group and others, but some organizations simply don’t have the resources any more. These days, whether you are a financial advisor, run a convenience store or a local eatery, one thing is certain, you will get peppered with requests for everything from door prizes to draw items to cash sponsorships almost
daily, especially during golf tournament season. Businesses do what they can. Due to volume they have to pick and choose where they put their support, many rotating from year-to-year to try to cover all the ground. It’s not easy. Once in a while, a crisis arises...as it did for Big Brothers Big Sisters a few years ago. A couple of quickly cobbled fundraisers to help the group by its crisis and things have reset and resolved. FORT was in such a crisis of late. A victim of its West Lincoln “success” has necessitated moves and expanded programming but the financial support to serve a clear and important need did not. Having worked closely with the FORT team I know how dedicated and focused they are. And having dealt with many stories over the years centred around the need they are attempting to fill - as is Convos Youth Zone over in Beamsville - it is clear the youth in our community are worthy of ongoing and dedicated support. FORT, like many groups, serves a need which will only grow as our youth get more comfortable with their programming. Growth = Cost. Our business community does amazing things and the folks at Meester are case in point today. The youth of West Lincoln would have been the ones who lost out if Meester et al had not been so generous. As an ardent supporter of FORT, I salute them. As a member of “Club West” Niagara they should be thanked profusely for their commitment to their community.
