Celebrating 50 years of trail hiking The Niagara Bruce Trail Club is celebrating a milestone. On Monday, the club was recognized by Grimsby council for 50 years of Bruce Trail conservancy. Throughout the year, the club will be celebrating with special hikes and events. Recently the club held an End to End Hike over Victoria Day weekend, where hikers com-
pleted the 80-km trek. On May 24, to mark the 50th anniversary of the official opening of the Niagara Bruce Trail, a planting ceremony was held at the cairn at Queenston Heights Park. Corrie Kellestine, VP media relations director of the Niagara Bruce Trail Club, explained to council that the Bruce Trail is the oldest
and longest continuous footpath in Canada. It runs along the Niagara Escarpment from Niagara to Tobermory, spanning more than 885 km of main trail and 400 km of side trails. The Niagara Bruce Trail Club is one of nine member clubs of the Bruce Trail Conservancy (BTC). See TRAIL, Page 3

The 70th Anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944, was no doubt on the mind of 32 GrimsbyProbusClubmembers whovisitedthe Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. “I for one remember when hundreds of Lancasters dropped food at some places in the Netherlands at the end of WWII,” said Probus secretary Peter Zwart. The museum, in Mount Hope features over 40 vintage aircraft from WWII. The Avro Lancaster is one of the many airplanes on display at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Grimsby’s Pobus Club paid a recent visit to the museum.

From Page 1 The club’s primary activities are hiking and maintenance of the southern-most section of the Bruce Trail from Queenston to Grimsby. Almost 7,000 acres of Escarpment land are secured and managed by the BTC. “Most people don’t realize that 49 per cent of the Bruce Trail corridor is still vulnerable to development,” Kellestine explained. This is why it’s important to work with landowners along the trail to ensure the trail is conserved. The club has about 100 active volunteers who maintain the trail, organize hikes and special events. There are also about 600 members, who contribute $50 a year to the club. Almost a quarter of a century ago, I raised my hand at a meeting to offer my services as a volunteer. The meeting of Port Colborne citizens was so contentious, it had to be moved from city hall to a larger venue at the Canadian Legion. I was part of a core group of culturalists determined to turn the flagging Port Colborne Club into a theatre for the arts. Against us were naysayers and business people who opposed the use of tax dollars to compete with their private entertainment establishments. The guy who spoke before me - Joe of Joe’s Bar got so worked up he ended his pitch by saying that he was “not going to kiss Shirley Coppen’s ass!” Shirley was the local provincial government rep. I began my pitch by stating that Joe was playing dirty pool because the mental image of kissing Shirley Coppen’s has sent 15 guys running for the Belmont Hotel and ... they were

Trixie’s Closet raises $1,500 for McNally House This year’s fashion for Compassion raised $1,500 for McNally House hospice. The event was held on May 24 at Syndicate Restaurant in Grimsby. This year, Trixie’s Closet owner Bruna Callari,
who hosts the event, chose to support McNally House as many of her customers have been in the unfortunate situation where they needed the services of the hospice. McNally House is a residen-
tial setting that provides 24hour specialized palliative care. Callari thanks everyone who attended, volunteers, sponsors and the Syndicate Restaurant for their support.

The purpose of this study is to review the Class EA completed in 1997 for a new or improved escarpment crossing of the area to accommodate commercial traffic, while minimizing negative impacts to residents and motorists.The project team used the existing data from the 1997 study and updated it where necessary. This information will be used to complete an identification and screening of the planning alternatives, followed by the development of design concepts for the preferred alternative. The Process The study was initiated as a Schedule ‘C’ project in accordance with the Municipal Class EA document (October 2000, as amended in 2011). As a result of input received from the agencies, stakeholders and the public, the Project Team found that no single solution will fully address the Problem Statement. Based on this finding, the Regional Public Works Committee approved a revised Terms of Reference that provides for a Master Plan approach to complete Phases 1 and 2 of the study. This approach includes the identification of short-term and long-term projects to address the original Problem Statement. At the conclusion of the study, the EA process will be documented in a Master Plan report. Schedule A and A+ projects will proceed to implementation and more detailed work will be completed for Schedule ‘B’ and ‘C’ projects. Public Information Centre #2 Public consultation is a key component of this study.The purpose of the PIC is to present the findings, including the identification of both the short-term and long-term projects identified as part of the Master Plan approach and to solicit public input. There will be two venues (with the same information presented at both sessions) as follows: Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2014 Time: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Location: Beamsville Secondary School, Gymnasium 4317 Central Ave. Beamsville Date: Wednesday, June 18, 2014 Time: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Location: Grimsby Secondary School, Gymnasium 5 Boulton Ave. Grimsby Upcoming consultation activities will be advertised in local newspapers or emailed/mailed to those on the Project Contact List. There has been lots of posturing, personal shots, discrediting of platforms and such throughout the current provincial election campaign. Love or hate Tim Hudak’s job creation strategy, one aspect which rings true is the need to dissolve the province’s LHINs. McGuinty’s Liberals set up this health care administrative body to screen itself from the heat of tough decisions. If the whole thing went away tomorrow and business resumes to pre-LHIN, it would be business as usual, with huge savings. The province needs to cut cost wherever possible, no matter which political stripe you bear. M.W.
Some changes you see, others no When we rolled by our second anniversary at NewsNow last month, I told you, good reader, that changes were in the offing as our little homegrown project takes route and starts to expand. We are in the process of doing that with our first-ever (it won’t be our last gauging by the response) publication in Stoney Creek. For the last couple of weeks we have been working on a magazine there similar to the progress edition we did in Beamsville in February. Being such a small operation, it is very difficult to do new things with existing staff but I am very fortunate to have seriously dedicated professionals who love what they do, love going to work each day, and appreciate being at an organization which values their attributes. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts... indeed. While that book is perking along and we get businesses noting how much they would like to see some competition in Stoney Creek, that is not in the plans for the immediate future, but I won’t look past an opportunity either. Who knows? My focus, first and foremost, is my home, Niagara West. Going way back to the early 2000s when I owned the other paper in town, we had considered the idea of launching a glossy magazine to tell local stories in a different forum. This was always in
MIKE WILLISCRAFT the business plan this time around but nothing was going to be developed until our core product, NewsNow, was healthy and growing roots. I had that in Year 3 of the business plan, but everything we’ve done has been much quicker than anticipated, so why should the launch of ClubWest not follow suit. We put months of thought into the development of this new lifestyle magazine which will launch with its new edition at the end of June. We will be going to 15,000 members of our exclusive little “club”. When we knew we were going to launch something new, we wanted to do something with which we knew we could have fun. We did not want to just roll out the same old, same old, cover the usual bases and say “look, something new”. Before we settled on the concept, I registered multiple names and websites so we would have some flexibility. Now I have heard our competition has opted to launch
something, but they may want to check with the provincial government’s business name registration branch as I believe the name they chose was one of the names I registered, unless I am missing something? Glad to sell them the name should they choose to proceed. But I am only focusing on what we’re about to do – namely tell some great stories, present some unique forums and truly showcase our little “club”. Anyone who has lived here for any length of time knows full well what a treasure it is. We are our own prideful ecosystem, each community within our overall community. I love that NOBODY from Campden or Jordan says they are from Lincoln. We know the difference and so should everyone else. We will be telling our “membership” (also known as residents) about cool things other members are doing, where they are doing these things and all kinds of other interesting tidbits. As well, we will extend ClubWest’s reach with a destination-style edition so we can tell others outside the area just how great a place our little “club” is. For our ClubWest readers, we will be developing a form of loyalty program. After all, membership should have its privileges, yes? (sorry Amex). We are going to have some fun with ClubWest. One of the many victims was the bulk carrier Pascal P. Pratt. The ship had been built at Cleveland in 1888 and sailed, generally without mishap, for twenty years. The 87.17
