HHS session fills Mountainview By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Not wanting to leave a stone unturned proved a purdent decision for Hamilton Health Sciences officials. A second, and initially unplanned visit to Grimsby as part of the input process for HHS’s “Our Healthy Future” program, generated about eight times the number of attendees from the first session. It appears from all accounts the second go-round was just what the
doctor ordered. “It went really well,” said Robert Yates of Vineland. “There was so much information brought up it was difficult to follow but they did a great job of organizing it all and creating a focus. It was very worthwhile.” HHS first planned 10 public sessions to gain input in all the catchment areas served by its seven hospitals. The grassroots process will take about a year to develop and lead to a cohesive plan for group which

Two time champs, Grizzlies win Ontario Cup Gold Grimsby Seniors Club The Grimsby Grizzlies U15 Midget Boys Basketball team went undefeated a second year in a row to capture gold in the Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) Provincial Championships hosted in London on Sunday, May 31. Grimsby beat Burlington 45-36, North Toronto 48-30, Oakville 48-38 and MarkhamUnionville 58-38 in the championship finals. This represents back to back championships for this GBA team. “Even though we were the only non-Greater Toronto Area team in our division, I am very proud our boys were able to bring the intensity necessary to beat very experienced and often taller teams to win,” said head coach John Marinelli. “We put most of our ambition on our defence to defend our Ontario Cup: that was
the goal for the season. Coach Jeff Moscato, who was not at the tournament, taught new techniques in improving the team’s defence, and deserves a lot of the credit for the team’s success.” In the gold medal game, The Grizzlies came out strong and never looked back, defeating a tough team from Markham-Unionville. “I am very proud to have had the opportunity to coach these boys throughout the season as I have seen them grow and mature as players and young men,” said Coach Ruel “Skeeter” Mosquite. “I couldn’t be prouder of the intensity, focus and competitiveness that our players, coaches and parents had all season. It was a tremendous experience for everyone involved.”

Grimsby Minor Hockey 2014-2015 Greetings from GMHA’s president Greetings, Thank-you to all of the participants who helped make Grimsby Minor Hockey such a huge success in the 2014-2015 season. A special thank-you to our staff, Erin Tslibanis and Leesa Culp for keeping everything organized. This past season we had one of the highest registration numbers and we anticipate even higher numbers going forward. None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors and the dedicated hard work of our volunteers. Many of our travel teams went deep into the Ontario Playdowns and several were champions in the Niagara District finals. Two teams – Major PeeWee and Minor
Bantams won the OMHA championships. As well, our Major PeeWees won the prestigious OHF title, making them #1 in Ontario for Major PeeWee A. Grimsby Minor Hockey Association house league and local league is one of the largest and most successful programs throughout the Niagara District and again many of our teams succeeded and had a lot of fun in the process. According to data from TrueCar.com, in 2012 the average new car cost $30,500. That’s a considerable expense, especially at a time when fuel costs remain high and cost of living continues to rise. Because new cars have become so expensive, more and more vehicle owners are looking for ways to extend the life of their vehicles. •Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Check your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations regarding oil changes, and don’t forget to replace the oil filter. • Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal. • Take care of your vehicle’s interior, too. Preserve the vehicle’s door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicle’s interior, whether it’s cloth or leather. By Skip Gillham For NewsNow At the recent University of Kentucky Wildcats Athletic Awards Night, Ray Dykstra of Grimsby was named the winner of the Mr. Wildcat Award. He was honoured for all-round excellence in athletics, academics, character and service and the award caps his outstanding career at the prestigious Lexington, KY university. Four years ago, Dykstra’s athletic talent as a javelin thrower attracted the attention of the South East Conference school and he has spent his years there studying and competing in Track & Field for the Kentucky Wildcats. This season his successes include winning the University of Texas-San Antonio Challenge Invitational Meet in March with a throw of 76.83 metres. Dykstra followed that up with a victory at the Pepsi Challenge Meet at the University of Oregon in April with a 75.93 metre throw. This year the S.E.C. championships were held at Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS and Dykstra, the defending league champion, threw 77.63 metres for second place. The distance topped his winning throw from last year but a freshman at Texas A. & M. placed first with an even better heave. Florida won the Men’s S.E.C. league championship while the Kentucky men’s team was 6th

Project Description The Project is located within the Townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet and the Town of Lincoln in the Niagara Region and Haldimand County in Southern Ontario. The Project will consist of 77 wind turbine generators, step-up transformer, electrical collector lines, a transmission line, two transformer substations, turbine access roads and construction staging areas. The Project will have a total maximum nameplate capacity of up to 230 MW. Commencement of Construction Activities Initial surveying, land clearing and grading activities will begin for the access roads and the operations and maintenance building. By June 6th, 2015, the Project is expected to be under full construction, including construction of access roads, turbine foundations, collector lines, and the substations. Now that’s more like it... As 7 p.m. neared last Thursday and volunteers were already bringing out more tables and chairs, it was clear the second visit of Hamilton Health Sciences officials to Grimsby was going to be a success. When they held the first session at the Grimsby seniors centre and only a couple of dozens citizens showed up, both local officials and HHS folk were scratching their heads a bit. West Niagara has a well-earned reputation as a fierce defender of its West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. You mention WLMH and you’ll get 50 people at your door. For that reason, the low turnout surprised many to the point where they believed there should be a second kick at the can. That was a prudent decision. The result was the best attended, by far, of any of their sessions. Now they have a boat load of input with which to move forward. Give yourselves a collective pat on the back West Niagara. M.W.
Time to come clean on biodigester If you have a second storey window in your home, you can start practicing. For what, you ask? For the Egg Drop competition at June 27th’s Poultryfest in Smithville. By far one of the best run agricultural events in the province, Poultryfest now has a new sponsor...that’s us...and we will be rustling up some good prizes for top place finishers. The event remains one of my favourites. It makes me smile every time I think about it ever since a conversation I had with committee members about 10 years ago. I had opted into sponsoring what we called the Count the Chicks contest. Seemed simple enough – a mix of chicken, turkey and “secret” varieties of hatchlings – and visitors had to guess how many of each crowded into a tabletop pen. After to a few years, we were talking about ways to spice things up a little so, “How many naked chicks can you count at Poultryfest?” seemed like a lively slogan. Well, of course, just like with chickens, that would not fly. It was pretty funny seeing the reaction of the people in our conversation picturing dealing with the phone calls if that ever happened. Downright silly, but still makes me laugh 10 years on. So now, we are moving on to sponsoring the popular Egg Drop. How about, “Get the Drop on the competition at Poultryfest!” “(Egg) Drop what you’re doing and head to Poultry-
MIKE WILLISCRAFT fest”. You get the idea. Anyway, set that Saturday on your calendar. It is always a surefire hit. ******* So Grimsby is going ahead with its plan for a $4.5 million biodigester. If you ask the people in West Lincoln, many will tell you that would be vastly preferred to wind energy. Anything is better than nuke, yes? What has me concerned, and this goes back to the very start of this process, is the lack of a publicly disseminated plan laying out operating costs. Now I get that Grimsby Energy, Power et al simply don’t have to tell taxpayers what they are up to since the province set up the rules governing hydro utilities as, essentially, private companies. Of course they are not private companies. Not even a little, but they get to keep their planning and business practices behind closed doors. With Grimsby Power, since its inception, there has been a long and storied history of not relinquishing information even to Town Council, the
company’s shareholder. My point is not to get into any of that here. Those waters are deep and troubled. But the biodgester is different. It is $4.5 million of taxpayers money. Yes, it is under the purview of Grimsby Energy, but if the utility was not spending it, those funds would roll into the town coffers. When questioned at public meetings on the topic years ago, there seemed to be some surprise when confronted with survey information regarding what raw material might be available and at what cost – when the thing got rolling. That seeming uncertainty, founded or not, has been a linchpin for those who say the facility will be nothing more than a rural white elephant. When the contracts are in place, and costs are locked in, taxpayers should have full access to the business plan for the biodigester. In the past, like with the fibre optics project which proceeded without council even knowing about it ahead of time (now that was about 15 years ago), the utility would hide behind the need for privacy due to competitive reasons. It is understood they are trying to run a business which does have a major positive impact for the Town. BUT, there is no competitor in this domain. Input supply contracts should be locked in, electricity sales rates onto the grid are locked in. Time to let the good people of Grimsby know exactly what will happen with their tax dollars.
