The goal was to complete the 80-plus-km Niagara Section of the 885km Bruce Trail. Franck Healey, 70, Dan Wilson, 51, Margaret Corner, 59, and Ruth Moffatt, 54 comprised the team. In the end, Corner and Moffatt achieved their goal at just before 11 p.m,. Sunday night reaching the end of the line in Queenston. “Many people have hiked the Toronto section (50km) and Dufferin Hi-Land section (56km) in one day but very few have hiked Niagara in a day,” said Moffatt. “Especially when you consider the 30-degree plus temperatures of Sunday, but that is exactly what we set out to do.” See HIKE, Page 3

Weekday GO rail service will come to Grimsby in 2021, extending to Niagara Falls in 2023, Ontario MInister of Transportation Steven Del Duca announced Monday in St. Catharines. Subject to a final agreement with CN Rail, Metrolinx will start the consultations, planning and design work required to implement the service including: • Track improvements; • New and upgraded rail stations • A new layover facility in Niagara Falls • Additional GO rail fleet to provide service along the corridor • Adding more than 30 kms of new track. Three other stations are proposed along the corridor in addition to the Confederation GO Station - a new station on Casablanca Boulevard in Grimsby as well as upgraded VIA rail stations in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls. “There is now a firm timeline and we look forward to working with Metrolinx and the Province on this important service for Niagara residents. Strengthening our connection to and from the GTA enhances our ability to attract new people to Niagara, creating new opportunities for job creation and business expansion,” noted a regional release from all 12 Niagara mayors. “Today we are seeing the power of speaking with one voice. This announcement is the result of a strong and united effort across Niagara to make our number one priority of daily GO Train service a reality.

Beamsville LCBO robbed at gunpoint Beamsville’s LCBO outlet was robbed at gunpoint Monday. Just after 7 pm, a male suspect entered the LCBO store. The suspect approached the cash register pretending to make a purchase and brandished a firearm while demanding cash. The suspect removed the entire cash till which contained a
quantity of money and stuffed it into a black bag. The suspect fled the store, and seconds later a dark coloured pickup truck with a cap covering the cargo bed squealed its tires and left the parking lot at a high rate of speed. The suspect is described as male, dark complexion (possibly
tanned) , 5’10” to 6’ tall, approximately 40 years of age, wearing a green camouflaged Toronto Blue Jays hat, black sunglasses, grey t-shirt, and black pants. Forward any information to Detective J. Two accidents on Mountain Road hours apart on Mountain Road when the Buick veered west off the roadway and into a drainage ditch where it came into collision with a hydro pole and then a culvert where it came to final rest. Witnesses stopped and assisted the single male occupant of the vehicle and called 911. The 29-year-old St. Catharines driver had to be extricated from the vehicle before being transported by ambulance to a Hamilton Hospital with life-threatening injuries. This collision remains under investigation by Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit. IN THE
Mountain Street in Grimsby was the scene of two motor vehicle accidents less than two hours apart Monday afternoon. Just after 4:30 p.m., police, fire and ambulance personnel responded to a single vehicle collision on Mountain. The vehicle hit the retaining wall as it ascended the incline near Oak Street. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was transported to West Lincoln Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Then, at about 6:15 p.m. emergency responders attended a second collision on Mountain Road, just south of Elm Tree Road. Initial investigation revealed that a 1995 Buick motor vehicle was being operated southbound

Can’t go wrong with Raspberry Ice Cream Cake

RASPBERRY ICE CREAM CAKE INGREDIENTS • 1 loaf pound cake,
homemade or store bought, sliced horizontally into 3 pieces • 1-1/2 cups fresh raspberries • 1 pint vanilla ice cream, softened Icing sugar for serving DIRECTIONS Place bottom layer
of cake on a large piece of foil or in a loaf pan to fit. Sprinkle half of the raspberries over cake, spread evenly with half of the ice cream and top with another slice of cake. Repeat with remaining berries and
ice cream and last layer of cake. Wrap with foil and freeze at least four hours or overnight. Remove cake from freezer about 30 minutes before serving and sprinkle top of cake with icing sugar. Serve in slices.
Serves 8. NOTE: this can be made with a lemon pound cake with any local berries, blackberries, strawberries cut up, blueberries, etc. Also any coordinating ice cream can be used in place of vanilla.
The Power of Pushing a Pedal Heather Ogilvie knows the power of pushing a pedal. It not only gets her closer to the finish line of OneFoundation for Niagara Health System’s (NHS) Big Move Cancer Ride, it supports treatment for cancer patients at the NHS’s Walker Family Cancer Centre. Ogilvie knows first-hand as a radiation therapist how much the charity bike ride helps those who come through the Cancer Centre’s door — patients and their families
in the non-competitive event were even more personal. Her mother, Gail, was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time, and she would receive treatment at the Cancer Centre. “It’s become that much more important to support the facility because everyone has been really good to her,” Ogilvie says. “My motivation comes from all the patients I see but also because it hits close to home.” Ogilvie will ride 100 kilometres at the eighth edition of the Big Move Cancer Ride on Sunday, Sept. 11. She’s been building up to it since accidentally missing

alike. So it didn’t take much convincing to get on her bike four years ago and raise money for the cause. Last year, though, her reasons for pedalling 60 kilometres
a turn her first year and riding 32 kilometres instead of the 25 she signed up for. But no one should be daunted by that distance. With 25 and 50-kilometre courses,
the Big Move Cancer Ride is really about having fun, says Kristina Manzi, the OneFoundation’s interim Director of Operations. “It’s a ride, not a race,” she assures. So far, 160 people have signed up, committing to raise a minimum $500 in the process. All money stays in Niagara, where more than 33,000 radiation treatments have been completed since the Walker Family Cancer Centre opened in 2013. Manzi hopes 500 people will strap on bike helmets come ride day. Because it’s not a competitive event, cyclists 12 years of age and older can participate. They can prepare for the Big Move at weekly training rides held Thursdays at 6 p.m. at the Rockway Community Centre.
Fundraising also doesn’t have to be an exercise in spinning your wheels. Riders have hosted garage sales, sold homemade dog treats, shaved their head, or simply put a collection jar in a busy spot to make their fundraising goals. Ogilvie’s hockey league holds a bottle drive to help her reach $500 in pledges. Forming a team of riders also helps, even if everyone cycles a different route on ride day. “We have some really strong fundraisers,” Manzi says. “The teams have a really unique way to help because it’s gets everyone (on the team) motivated.” Much like Ogilvie’s own reasons for riding have changed, so has the meaning of the event. Before the Cancer Centre opened, the theme was One Pedal at a
Time, with a focus on building the centre so patients wouldn’t have to travel to Hamilton for radiation. This year’s theme is Inspired to Ride. Reasons to participate abound, Manzi notes, be it honouring a loved one’s memory, celebrating a recovery, or because the $2.8 million raised so far has been used to buy tools to assist treatment. “It’s tough to find people around here who haven’t been touched by cancer in some way,” Manzi says. “I’ve been (organizing this event) for eight years and … you get to see the spirit of why people participate in this. Last Monday may have started like any other high school day for Ben Friesen and some of his buddies, but the night of June 19 was anything but standard. What started out as conversation in Grade 9 and moved ahead with the purchase of a Jaguar in Mississauga for $750 in May ended up with a crew of six on Grimsby Secondary School’s rooftop at 4 a.m....oh, and the school’s mascot as well. “We said since Grade 9 we wanted to do something really good. We looked back to see what was done before and it was pretty lame,” said Ben Friesen, one of the team leaders. “I happened upon the MIT hack page and it showed everything they had done and that is where the idea came from.” The idea was to take a car and hoist it, under the cloak of darkness, to the school’s roof. In fact, that was Plan B. “We had planned to put it on top of Blessed Trinity with the GSS2016 license plate and our mascot. We checked out all around the school, but we could not find a place where we

could ensure safety and that we would do no damage,” said Friesen. Along with co-leader Roman Kozak, the duo added to the crew as needed. In the end, fellow GSS grads Ross Haskell, Matt Lalonde and Philip Cline joined the team along with Ming Scott, who met the boys while at GSS in Grade 9 before switching to Ridley. They successfully engineered a system of pulleys to lift the disassembled Jag to the GSS roof - in 11 loads where they reassembled the vehicle. They left for the first of two trips to the school at 2:30 a.m. and drove

The next day, the boys laid low, waiting for someone else to see the result of their efforts so they could assess the fallout. Students and teachers alike loved it, “even the principal smiled,” noted Ben. “Our mentor, Mr. Coates, suggested we go to the office and suggest we might have ideas how to get it down safely and with no damage.” For their penance, the boys were tasked with boosting results of a GSS shoe drive for Grimsby Benevolent Fund. This past Sunday they bought 20 new pairs with a goal of 50 in their sights, and judging by their prank they don’t back down from a challenge. “It was a lot of fun. Everyone loved it. We are really surprised by the amount of interest it has received.”

Sunset Music Series gets underway on July 5 at The Rotary Shell, Charles Daley Park, in Jordan. Everyone is invited. Admission and parking are free. Food vendors are at the park beginning at 5:30 p.m. - Butterballs Express with barbeque fare; Eco-Defenders with ice cream; Tays Treats with baked goods. There’s a GO train a comin’ Maybe. Some might say likely after Tuesday’s announcement from Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca that weekday GO train service will come to Niagara in 2021 with a Grimsby stop. Two years hence, GO will make its connection to Niagara Falls. The hope is all this promise - all this legwork by regional officials who usually play in their sandbox but harmonized to pepper the Liberal government til they caved - comes to fruition. The only note for pessimism surrounds the Liberals track record in Grimsby which still has its ongoing West Lincoln Memorial Hospital stain all over it. That had a big green light on it, and got halted by the Liberals. They have five years, more likely 2-3 to come with some other reason to push back GO. It is certainly hoped this does not happen, but reputations are reputations for a reason. M.W.
Great to see Poultryfest success I am not really sure what their expectation or hope might have been for the 2016 Poultryfest, but I am pretty sure any set goal was surpassed, by far. If you didn’t go, you should have. If you did, you know of which I speak. Finally, perfect weather shone on the event which has had a string of rain going back three years. Nope, not this year, bright sun all day, with a steady breeze to move the heat. People came early and kept on coming to the West Niagara Agricultural Centre. Every attraction had people bustling through. Line-ups, some 2-3 deep, others longer, but nothing that was overtly lengthy and everything moved briskly. The Richardson Building was packed with exhibitors, a huge penny sale and decorated chickens - I still think NewsNow’s Carnivale Catherine chicken was the best but the people have spoken :) - for the West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce’s contest. Lots of food and drink options kept everyone happy, young and old alike. All in all, not sure what could have made it better. For me, I was a little surprised to see a long line for the duck race event we sponsored, a first-time activity at Poultryfest. For an event that has been going as long as Poultryfest, organizers are always looking for something new and they certainly know they have a winner there. We sponsored a great prize pack - four Blue Jays tickets and dinner at Gretzky’s - for which you had to participate in a duck race dash to obtain an entry ticket. The winner was Sylvia Bylsma of Smithville. The event was a smash
MIKE WILLISCRAFT with nearly 550 participants, so that is cranking more than 10 races and hour to keep the line moving. To add a little spice to the whole thing, I must thank our local fire chiefs: Mike Cain of Grimsby; Greg Hudson of Lincoln and Dennis Fisher of West Lincoln. When I first issued the Firefighter Challenge weeks ago, it took all of a few mintues to have the chiefs committed to turn up Saturday to try their hand at the duck race for fun and a few bucks for the charity of their choice. To make things interesting, we went with the heat-style of racing - the champ would have to win two dashes to earn the nowcoveted title. Dash 1, Chief Fisher took a decisive win. Dash 2, and this one was contested as we had to go to the photo replay (not really because there wasn’t one) but the judges decided Chief Hudson had edged out Chief Fisher. Dash 3, not to be outdone, Chief Cane made a late rally for nose (or beak) victory. Bringing us to the final, sudden-death, challenge match. The crowd was giddy with anticipation. The ducks broke cleanly from the gate. Chief Fisher took the early lead, but Chief Cain closed
hard, then from nowhere Chief Hudson’s duck broken out down the middle and sped off for a solid victory sending the crowd of supporters into a frenzy....not really, but I did hear clapping as I shot my photos. In the end, a new tradition was born. The winner, Chief Hudson, gets bragging rights for a year - for which I am quite sure he will take full advantage, right Greg? And, with the victor’s arms raised to help soak in the glory, the two vanquished foes bowed in their best “Wayne’sWorld-we’re-not-worthy” poses for a photo. It really doesn’t get much better than that for summer time fun! But seriously, the team at Poultryfest deserves a lot of credit for being brave and making the move to the ag centre grounds. Poultryfest had cut its teeth in the heart of Smithville and that is a great part of its history, but it had major limitations and had grown stale in that format. At the ag centre, they have the room and layout to do whatever they choose, really, and that bodes well for the future as they will, undoubtedly, hope to bring in more new things, expand the programming and showcase what our local world of agriculture is all about. Because you may not have noticed folks, but while the kids were eating fries and ice cream, they were also learning. If you went through the education area, there was great information and many kids would have seen a live animal, other than dog or cat, for the first time. Kids, and people. need to know their food supply is not raised in the back room at Sobeys. Thanks to the committee for doing an outstanding job!

Reader scratching head over hydro decisions Dear Editor, Does Grimsby Town have a bottomless pit of money that anyone can access at any given time? Sure makes you wonder when they have unilaterally given another $600,000 to Grimsby Hydro notwithstanding they already have co-signed a $4.5 million loan. At least one alderman on council refused to approve it - where were the rest of the representatives of Council? In particular, my representatives, John Dunstall and Joanne Johnston: Why did you vote for it without a proper explanation of why hydro needed this additional money? Now Council is going to authorize an industry expert to conduct an investigation on this project. Who is paying for
Letter that study? It sure will not be Grimsby Hydro because evidently they do not have any money. Mr. Mayor, you represent not just one ward but all of the people of Grimsby and can you not put a lid on this spending? There are other projects that the Town has undertaken and are yet not finished and I am sure they will require ad-
ditional funds to complete. People, call your aldermen of your ward and ask what their reasoning was behind this decision. See if you get any answers that justify their vote. We received a “comfortable” increase in our taxes
for 2016 but not sure about next year what with the foreseeable future spending of our council. With events overseas happening, my investments went down drastically and sure makes me uncomfortable. Yours truly, Glenda Barry
