Lloyd gave a detailed history of how the High’s ancestors - along with the Fretz, Hipple, Rittenhouse, Moyer, Fry, Culp and Honsberger clans – made the 400 mile trek to the area on foot in summer of 1800.

Phelps, whose Phelps Homes has been recognized many times for its heritage conservancy when developing residential projects and purchased the land for development, praised the High family for their stewardship. “Mr. High has done a wonderful job as caretaker. There have been many offers to purchase the barn, too, but we always wanted to keep it in the community,”

noted Phelps. The plan to relocate the barn drew in a host of volunteers, town officials and historians. Among those helping was Val Fleming, who contributed $10,000 to help offset some of the cost of the project, noted Mayor Sandra Easton. Phelps Homes will be developing the High property with its Kingsway project at the site, directly across from the old Jordan Public School.

Are you ready to “think outside the Bank”? I recently met with a new client who was referred to me by her bank. She had been pre-approved by her bank to purchase a home with 20% downpayment. She then made an offer to purchase a property, and was disappointed to learn that her mortgage application had been turned down.

What happened?

The bank did not like the property that she had purchased. The property was in poor condition and needed extensive repairs - which the client was aware of and prepared to do. She just would not have the funds to make the repairs immediately. Her plan was to buy the home, and then renovate as she accumulated the funds to do so. The client didn’t not qualify for a renovation loan, or a line of credit, as she had already reach her credit limit with this mortgage application. I was able to get the client approved for a mortgage that included the immediate funds for renovation. And, the mortgage company approved the client for a 35-year amortization, which her bank could not offer. I was able to get the client approved for a variable-rate mortgage at a much lower rate than her bank had offered her. Talk to us. You’ll be impressed.

Lincoln’s heritage on display Saturday Friends of Lincoln’s History are hoping to start telling this story of the community, one steeped in a colourful past. This Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. anyone wanting to get a firsthand glimpse into the past can tour any or all of the six historic homes which comprise the first house tour. “There are two Pennsylvania German houses, both with original

fireplaces, two houses on original Loyalist land grants, one house in Jordan Village that served as a post office and at one house you will see the tiny first bank in Jordan Station,” said event chair Mary Lou Garr. “On the tour, ticket holders will receive copies of two local history books as well as some Pennsylvania German food sam-

ples. We are trying to make this house tour a unique experience for guests to help them get a real sense of the house history.” Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at the Grimsby Museum, Heritage Gift Shop in Jordan Village, Vineland Antiques, Action Print in Beamsville and Dillon’s Small Batch Distillers. The bad news was it was stifling hot Sunday afternoon for Evan’s Ride. The latter did not deter participants and supports from generating more than $15,000 for autism programming and services in Niagara. “It was hot out! We had a good turnout but found that there were many handing in pledges and choosing not to ride because of the heat,” said event organizer

Two great events set of this weekend Two very interesting events on this coming weekend menu: both unique, both will draw very well, but they don’t have a whole lot in common. First, the Friends of Lincoln’s History should be commended for getting the inaugural Heritage House Tour. It is likely there are many in the group itself saying, “It’s about time!” Lincoln has such an incredible history to tell and it is High time (pun intended) it was showcased for everyone to see and hear about. Over in Grimsby, the Rotary Club of Grimsby has found a new home for the venerable Festival of Art. This event has never been an ordinary art show. From its developmental days on Nelles Boulevard, the Festival has always drawn the best of the best. In recent years it has had a bit of a vagabond existence and it will be good to see in entrench and grow at the PK Centre. Let’s hope for great weather. Best of luck to all. M.W.

Real hard work a true educator I used to young and stupid. Now I’m old..... Back in the day, in my harness racing/farm days, I always wanted to be the guy in barn’s mow during hay/straw time. To those not informed at to what that means... take a weekend like the most recent, then put yourself in a dusty, enclosed space, no shade for the building and a tin roof to radiate as much heat as possible into everything which lies beneath. I really don’t know, and never really did want to know just how hot is was up in there but I would have to think 20 degrees warmer (yes, I am still in Fahrenheit) would not be out of the question. Let’s just say it was stinkin’ hot, indescribable, really. But I will say, if you’ve ever opened an oven to check and see how something is doing and inadvertently breathed in that 350 degree dry oven air....like that. Now this was before there even was bottled water. For you kinders out there we used to use an old invention called a thermos, or more often than not each of us had one of those Coleman coolers with a spout on it filled with ice water or even lemonade for a real treat. I would go through 3-4 refills of that cooler per day. No problem. Lunch was brought out to us, usually a sandwich or two, something quick, and as much fruit as we could munch down in 2025 minutes, then back at it. Dinner, whoa! The dinner! It would be 2-3 picnic tables filled with awesome food. You

I got the inspiration from this week’s ramblings from two things in the last week: a) After seeing something on social media I actually noted something on facebook, which is extremely rare for me because I really have zero use for that “stuff”. I noted that I wished my kids had been able to get summer jobs during their high school years working outdoors. b) I moved house on the weekend. That, too, was stinkin’ hot but it always gave me perspective and I was able to give myself a self-inflicted “suck it up, buddy, this is nothing!” kick in the pants at several points when I was about to whine. My own biggest fear growing up was that I would not be tough enough for the real world. Not having a Dad from 13 on, I really had no gauge to show or explain the relativity of things. When you’re a kid, you think you know things but you really

have no clue. I realized I had no clue, so I overcompensated in just about everything I did to make sure I learned what to do and how to do it, whether that was work, baseball, hockey, whatever. I have the same concern for not only my kids (because you always want what is best for them), but for all teens who seem to have a frighteningly high sense of entitlement. That fear is still in my head some place. It pops up from time to time. It is a phenomenal motivator cause there are a lot of days when it would be all too easy to take a pass. But that is when the other lesson learned from my boss – an ancient farmer at heart who also owned a huge construction company, landfill and all kinds of other interests would kick in – “never say whoa in a bad spot”. Loosely translated: don’t slow down in a muddy puddle (or sign of trouble). Push on. Get through it. Most recent example: Saturday. That hurt. A lot. but we got through it. I do have to apologize to anyone who had events this weekend, though. I could not get to any. Between packing, moving and getting things organized enough to get through rooms, that was four days of chaos! Anyways, if anyone out there has summer gig which would be suited to a 17-year-old girl (although she may already have one, not sure) but definitely a big, strong 16-year-old young lad, call me. I’ll send them right over :)

St. John’s Anglican Church in Jordan will mark 175 years of serving the community on Saturday, June 18. The church, located at 2878 St. John’s Drive, was erected in 1841 by Loyalists who had settled in the village of Jordan, on the banks of the Twenty Mile Creek. It opened for services in May 1842. The church, a blend of Gothic Revival with classic proportions, designed by John Howard, was built on lands originally granted to Thomas Butler of the Butlers Rangers, and later donated by the Ball family.
