GO “a work in progress” PIC attendees get secondary transit plan update in Grimsby By Mike Williscraft NewsNow There was a great deal visitors to last Thursday’s public information centre meeting in Grimsby wanted to hear but nobody expected to hear there might be one train in and out of Toronto daily to start. “I had not heard that before Thursday night,” said resident Tony Joosse of discussions among visitors at town hall. He was not the only one who heard of the limited schedule as more than a dozen visitors to the PIC meeting voiced the similar concerns. While many talked Thursday that Metrolinx may propose one train into Toronto at 7 a.m. - possibly 6 a.m.) and one return train to Niagara at 5 p.m. - Niagara Region manager of community planning Diana Morreale said no proposed schedule has surfaced as yet. “It’s a process,” said Morreale, noting Metrolinx is in ongoing negotiations with CN regarding a 25-km stretch of tracks. Improvements to the tracks usage times are the two major points being discussed. “We have not seen a
formal proposed schedule as yet,” said Morreale. “But ridership must be developed. Burlington now has a train every half-hour but it didn’t start that way. It took a long time to develop. We are hoping to know the schedule soon.” The focus of the study includes: • Work with Metrolinx to provide input on station design; • Prepare Secondary Plans for the lands around the station areas; • Conduct transportation analysis around each station, and; • Market analysis to determine development potential around the station areas. Aside from the schedule or the train service itself, also of major concern to residents is the plethora of construction which will evolve in the area surrounding the proposed GO station at Casablanca Boulevard and the South Service Road. As homeowners near Livingston and Casablanca, they are concerned about major increases in traffic flow, but are very excited to see the station completed. “We both live very close, so are concerned,” said Arsenault, who added the proposed Livingston Avenue extension is part of that concern. At the meeting, Joosse asked Morreale why the extension was on the mapping for the GO plan. He noted that he had attended a regional planning meeting earlier this month and members of the committee accepted an 1,100-signature petition submitted by Reg. Coun. Tony Quirk and decided
the proposed extension should be removed from the Region’s plans. Only Grimsby Mayor Bob Bentley spoke against removing the extension and suggested the matter be sent back to Grimsby council for more input. The committee agreed. Another major concern brought up at the meeting came from landlords who own properties in Grimsby’s downtown. Diego Vizzari, who owns several properties in the core, said he thinks the Town is being irresponsible creating a second commercial core which will erode business downtown. “It makes no sense to divide the commercial,” said Vizzari. Morreale said, “Downtown Grimsby is very important. I think there are other issues downtown making it hard to keep tenants.”

Grimsby ready to roll with Canada Day excitement Downtown Grimsby will be a happening scene Saturday as Canada Day activities are rolled out in multiple locations. Grimsby Museum will be the hub for much of the day’s event - spanning from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. with a ceremony at noon. Fun School of Music will provide the music for the day, with Grimsby Lions Club handling barbecuing duties. Birthday cupcakes, a best-
decorated hat and photo contests will be part of the mix. The museum will have bouncy castles, a duck pond, cotton candy, face painting, bubble pond and more. In addition to the museum grounds, revellers can also make their way over to Nelles Manor Museum for a tour, or drop by the Grimsby Public Art Gallery or library. All will have special activities
on the go throughout the day. Be sure to get your #Canada150 passport along the way. The back page will be your ballot in a draw for a Canadian Shield Rose bush (developed and donated by Vineland Research) or, for kids, a treasure box.

Record turnout at Poultryfest Poultryfest brought in record crowds Saturday at the West Niagara Agriculture Centre. “We were thrilled with the record turnout for PoultryFest Niagara 2017,” said event president Jim Koornneef. “We fortunately were blessed with the one great day in an otherwise terrible week of weather. When we did have a five-minute downpour in the afternoon, the three large buildings at the new Agricultural Centre provided plenty of space to take cover.” Koornneef said the success of the event is the result of a top-to-
bottom team effort. “PoultryFest is a great example of what can be achieved when volunteers, businesses, and the municipality work together for the common benefit of the community,” he said. “This year we saw more visitors from outside West Niagara than we have ever experienced before. The Kira Isabella evening concert attracted a huge crowd of passionate fans and the Canada 150 fireworks that followed were outstanding.” “None of this would be possible without the great committee of volunteers we have.”

While Charles Daley Park will host the major Canada Day celebrations in Lincoln, town hall will host the official start to the weekend Friday afternoon. “The Dream Catchers - A musical that dares you to dream” will launch the weekend’s festivities with a performance at 5 p.m. Take hip hop, spoken word and folk. Blend it with contemporary and Indigenous dance, choose 26 of the most diverse and exciting young actors from across the country and experience The Dream Catchers. The show is a vibrant music and dance-filled spectacle that explores the dreams of young Canadians. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be moved to the Fleming Centre. Admission is free. Bring your own lawn chairs.
At Charles Daley Park, the admission fee is waived this year, so the 1-10 p.m. event is free to all. Beamsville Music Studio gets the stage performers off and running right at 1 p.m., with opening ceremonies set for 3 p.m. Don’t miss out on the Canada birthday cake prepared by Beamsville Bakery. Activities include: rock climbing wall, face painting, Mad Science, balloon animals, fire truck displays and more. Beamsville Lions will have their food truck on hand and a food court will be set up on the grounds. Stage entertainment will include: Jasmine T at 3:30 p.m.; Sandy Vine and the Midnights at 5 p.m.; Off The Record at 6:15 p.m., and; Jonesy will close the show at 8 p.m. The Garden City Display Fireworks is set for 10 p.m.

Happy birthday to us!!! Yes, this week marks the 150th anniversary of our great country and our residents should do it up right! There is a ton of events going on...get out and enjoy them. Go to more than one. There are events all day starting at 10 a.m. in Grimsby. As far as countries of the world are concerned, Canada is a babe in the woods. The nation has survived some major challenges and called upon some of the very greatest Canadians to survive those challenges. Pierre Trudeau, while many detested the man for what they believe as his negative economic impact on the country, pulled a beauty besting Rene Levesque in The Night of The Long Knives. Political intrigue at its best. Louis Riel, Sir John A. and, yes, Trudeau would be a good start to a “What three Canadians would you invite to dinner & why?” Who would you invite? M.W.
GO balls dancing in the air Buzz worthy items from last week’s GO PIC at Grimsby town hall were many. When a Metrolinx representative was telling a group of visitors that the plan, as it stands today, would launch with only one morning train into Toronto (at 7 a.m. but could change to 6 a.m.) and one train home at 5 p.m. - that started a full-on murmur. Now, when Metrolinx is talking about building up ridership to 630 per day by 2030, it is clear they are planning for a modest beginning. There are so many things in the air about the design of the area, though, it is tough for people to get their minds around what will materialize. There was lots of talk regarding making it easier for potential riders to bike or walk to get to the new station. However, since Beamsville is not included in this current study, is the plan for residents there to bike and walk to the station as parking for those folks is not part of the consideration at this point? Parking - all on its own - is going to be the #1 issue in that entire area I can tell you right now. The number of residential complexes in the works that are and will be under-serviced by parking will magnify a problem which has already manifested itself. As I noted weeks ago, management at Casablanca Winery Inn are already having major problem with visitors to Winston Road homes parking in their lot overnight. Add in another couple thousand residential units, put in a splash of touristtype parking demand at the new beach and boardwalk area and we have a recipe for parking fun unlike this town has ever seen.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT There was further head scratching when the proposed Livingston extension remains of the study mapping despite being all but shot down after a decisive debate at this month’s Niagara Region Planning Committee meeting. Mayor Bob Bentley managed to keep it on life support by suggesting it should come back to Grimsby council, yet again, for further input, despite the consensus around the table being it was time to shelve the plan. History has shown elements which are generally unwanted but find themselves stuck in the spokes of progress have a way of finding themselves in the final drafts. The most recent shining example of this being West Lincoln’s inclusion of several elements which were never approved by full council being included in the MURS request for proposals. Next thing you know, the township just blew nearly $900,000 on an expanded library, as well as other bells and whistles. The Livingston extension should be dead and gone, never to see the light of day. I get what Niagara Region manager of community planning Diana Morreale says about throwing everything into the planning mix as they cannot see what may be
needed in 20 or 30 years, but including that dotted line on a map not just leaves the door to ushering in the unwanted extension, it hands the handful of proponents a key. I have to hope and believe this endeavour turns out just plain cool, which it has all rights to be. It could be next level, or it could be an unmitigated disaster. So far, the best thing about it is that Niagara Region is running the show as opposed to the Town of Grimsby or, heaven forbid, town council. All we need is a corner of a new GO parking lot blocked off for another biodigester for CoGen because we simply must find a way to generate even more unneeded electricity. And speaking of the good ol’ bio, many are asking increasingly heated questions about what has and will happen with the $9 million in proceeds from the fire sale, er, sale of Niagara Power’s fibre optic company (NRBN) shares. Yes, there is legal and other fees to come off this, but the total left will be well over $8 million. When fans of Niagara Power, Grimsby Power, Grimsby Energy, HoldCo2 (again, pick a name) start talking about reinvesting liquid funds, I think it would be better for them to hand out $20 bills to Grimsby residents and let them burn the money in their homes for heat to save on hydro. The CoGen’s waste of more than $1 million and the ongoing bio mess are clear examples of why the public’s money should NOT be used for high risk investment. Fuel that fire when you have people with no clue what they’re doing running the show and burning some $20 bills to save on a heating bill looks like a much better ROI.
Winston Road reader gives up: moving away Dear Editor, Since moving to Grimsby with the thought of retiring here I have always read your editorial. I read with interest all your comments about the Grimsby council and the new Winston Road development. I have been a part of many public meetings over the Waterview apartments, the owner wanting nine stories and now 15. It got passed but thankfully a resident in the area took it to the OMB.
