Up Front Nelles Manor hosts July 1 fun While a series of Canada Day events will be staged this Sunday, Nelles Manor is getting into the mix with an event of its own. From 10 a.m.4:30 p.m. a series of kids’ activities such as a scavenger hunt, games, and croquet on the lawn will run, while door prizes are up for grabs. Tours of the manor are also available, regular rates apply for those. The manor is located at 126 Main St. W., Grimsby.

“New” Livingston EA starts rolling By Mike Williscraft For NewsNow It was déjà vu all over again for Bruce MacKenzie and opponents of the Livingston Avenue extension in Grimsby at last Wednesday’s environmental assessment open house on the topic. An EA had been started back in 2014, but there is no reference to the infor-
mation gathered, comments made or studies completed between 2014 and 2017, noted MacKenzie, one of the organizers of the Save The Woodlot group - referring to the Irish grove woodlot on Hunter Road. “There were a lot of good things and several others which raised concern about the EA meeting,” said MacKenzie.
“The fact their wording in the EA document stated the process is to “confirm the need for the road”. That is wrong and the consultant agreed the wording was wrong. It should have referred to the development of an east/west transportation strategy.” Main Street is a possible alternative cited as means to improve east/west transporta-
tion issues, too. “There were aspects of the meeting that were positive – the display boards and some recognition of the woodlot by the consultants was encouraging” said MacKenzie. The root of concern, however, was a comment made by the consultant working on the Livingston EA who told those on hand that the Town
had made its decision on proceeding with the extension if they study fell in line with the project, he added. “That was not the case at all. At the regional meeting, it was voted (by Grimsby’s representative at the meeting Ald. Dave Wilson) that it be removed from the Transportation Master Plan but when it came See EA, Page 3

It was clarified that Wednesday’s meeting would be the only time the two would intersect. The east/west transportation strategy is not near the focus of the Casa-
blanca project. The Region is hoping to have work in that area completed by 2021 to harmonize with the anticipated GO station opening. “The east/west strategy timeline is not as tight,” said MacKenzie, adding the next public meeting on is expected to be set for some time this fall.
Sunset Music Series starts The Rotary Club of Lincoln’s Sunset Music Series launched next Tuesday, July 3, with Barbara Mantini taking to the Charles Daley Park bandshell. The series hosts a wide variety of music every Tuesday night through the summer at the park, from 7-8:30 p.m. The event goes ‘rain or shine’ with food vendors like Butterball’s Express and Tim Horton’s on-site. Aldermen Michelle Seaborn, Dave Kadwell and Carolyn Mullins voted against it.
The motion “neither supports nor opposes a Livingston Avenue extension and would prefer to see the results of an Environmental Assessment on this matter prior to considering our position and further that the 2017 Niagara Region Transportation Master Plan reflect this.” MacKenzie said he noted this to the consultant, that council’s position was to process the EA results before giving any direction at all. “The community’s message has been strong and consistent. Yesterday (Wed.), Saigeon packed up and headed off to the Avs’ development camp. This fall he is not sure where he may be plying his trade. The 20-year-old centreman who helped get his Hamilton Bulldogs team to the Memorial Cup tournament was drafted 140th overall in the fifth round by the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL’s entry draft on Saturday. While the NHL Central Scouting had him going right about that area - he was ranked 147th among North American skaters Saigeon did not know who might step up to draft him. It took a couple of years for Saigeon’s play to get back to where he wanted it after she shattered a forearm in his second year of Junior A hockey. Even last season started slow, but before Christmas, it all came together for Saigeon and the Bulldogs. The teams pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Ontario Hock-

The Grimsby Museum will hold its annual Canada Day Celebration on Sunday, July 1 from 11 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to Celebrate Canada’s 151st Birthday with events held throughout the day in the Grimsby Museum Park. Activities will include Jurassic Adventure Land Bouncer, World of Disney Bouncer, Fish Fling Game, SnoKones, Face Painting and Crafts. Enjoy a story and move around while learning an interesting aspect of Canadian history with the Grimsby Public Library and StoryWalks. www.healthykidsniagara.ca. my.nflibrary.ca/StoryWalks Musical entertainment is planned by the Fun School of Music and a the Grimsby Lions Club will be firing up their barbecue. The day will end with a water balloon toss. VIMY OAK SAPLING DEDICATION There will also be a dedication of the Vimy Ridge Oak sapling at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Canada Day Ceremony with the ringing of the Town Bell, and the singing of “O
Canada” at Noon. Government representatives will bring greetings and there will be free birthday cupcakes. As well, enjoy free admission to the museum galleries. On display in the Woolverton Gallery: “Death and Dying” in collaboration with McNally House Hospice and Stonehouse Whitcomb Funeral Home and in the Martin Gallery: “Historic Kitchens” There is a small charge to cover the cost of some activities. Proceeds from activities at the Canada Day celebration help to support Museum summer programming. In the event of severe inclement weather, this event will be a cancelled. Fun, food par for mini-putt
The inaugural Family Mini-Putt went off without a hitch at the Peach King Centre June 16. Ten foursomes signed up for the event, playing an 18-hole round, taking in an awesome lunch prepared by Ontario College of Health & Technology chefs and helping raise funds for FORT and Big Brothers Big Sisters along the way. “It really could not have gone any better for a first time event. With the mini-putt we do in the winter, we started with six teams the first year, so 10 is a great start and we’re looking to build on that,” said Kinsmen coorganizer Bruce Bond. “With great sponsor like Grimsby Ford, Grimsby Chrysler, Grimsby KIA, Grimsby Hyundai and Wills Chev as well as the college behind us, we know we’re on the right track.”

The Town of Grimsby’s Civic Recognition Awards were handed out last week at the Peach King Centre. The awards, which come from nominations in the community, are bestowed every two years. Among this year’s recipients were Womenchant choir and drummers. Individuals and groups who have done good things for the community in a volunteer nature are eligible for the awards. Grimsby Lawn Bowling Club held its first Mixed Triples Open Tournament of the 2018 season on Tuesday June 19. Livingston EA starts to play out It was interesting to hear the lead consultant dealing with the EA for the Livingston extension - or the east/west transportation strategy as it were - noting that Grimsby had already put forth its opinion on whether or not the extension should proceed. The majority of council had spoke up against it last summer and the Town’s representative voted in favour of removing it from the Region’s Transportation Master Plan. That seemed pretty definitive. Then Mayor Bob Bentley spoke up, telling council it should be left in the regional documentation and they decide later... this after CAO Derik Brandt said the extension could be done regardless of whether or not it was included in the plan at all. Enough members of council succumbed to the mayor’s suggestion, including Ald. Dave Wilson flipping his vote from region, to allow a bland motion to pass. Had he not flipped it would have died in a tie vote. Now, the lead project consultant has interpreted that - at this point - as meaning the Town supports the extension, which was not the case or the intention. Yet another case of political sleight of hand. M.W.
Simple word, deep meaning “Peace.” To a kid in the 60s or early 70’s that word may conjure images some “hippy” types, chillin in a park, a cloud of sort of smoke wafting through the air above, in funky dress with their VW van parked close by. Today, what does peace mean to you? Almost assuredly, many would connect that word to a desire for it to spread across the world’s military and political scenes – to be sure – but also to some of the people we love who crave it. To this kid, as a nine-yearold in 1973, “Peace” was the word one Ferguson Jenkins used as a prefix to his autograph. I was fortunate enough to obtain one on a 3X5 black and photo of Canada’s only member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Fergie had authored a book and was doing a signing at a shop in London. My recollection of the event was there being a super long line and wondering what all the fuss was about. I certainly didn’t realize what or who this happening was about at that point, but my mom sure did. You won’t find a more fierce Canadian and she was (and is) a Fergie rooter all the way. I am really not sure why that word stuck out so much to me at the time, maybe because I really didn’t know its impact. What does peace mean to a 10-year-old? Being a little cheeky, this week peace means getting through this series of deadlines unscathed – grad sections, NewsNow AND ClubWest this week, then launching into the intensely popular Best In The West reader survey special feature. Through no fault of his own, Fergie contributed to
MIKE WILLISCRAFT the opposite of peace last Friday when I had an interview scheduled at the start of the day at his annual golf tournament at Rockway Vineyards Golf Course. I was there at the prescribed 9 a.m., but flight delays out of Chicago translated to an arrival of about 1 p.m. The problem was magnified since it was initially thought he would arrive about 10:30 or 11 a.m. If he was on the early side, there was no sense driving back to the office only to turn right around 20 minutes later, so I stayed put. There aren’t many people I would do that for but, for Fergie, happily. And here’s why. The man is 75 years old. He mentioned his wife is ill back home in Oklahoma, so he keeps his travel schedule reduced and trips short. He was flying up for the tournament and flying back Saturday morning. In the past when he came to town he would spend a couple of mornings having breakfast at Mama’s Sub Shop (he asked about her on Friday), hitting a few events and even schools in the area, grabbing a burger at Teddy’s and then heading home after a 4-5 day stopover. I certainly was not going to have him waiting on me, and I really don’t think he could have. As soon as people saw him it was high-fives and bro hugs. You can read all about our discussion when ClubWest Magazine comes out, but I want to get back to that word “peace”. When I see what Fergie is doing for hundreds of charities it is clear he is helping people find some sort of peace through his contributions. Actions speak louder than words...so Fergie could be considered a pretty loud man. That whole line of thought was quite a contrast this week to the peace Flavio Iammarino was trying to help about 80-plus people find during our open discussion on mental health at the Grimsby Activity Centre. I really didn’t know what to expect there, but it went very well and we are planning a second session with a varied theme. The folks who attended there were looking for peace themselves or for a family member or friend. For such a simple word it is surprising how illusive it can be. It doesn’t cost anything, but not being able to obtain it can have a monumental cost. Having spread an estimated $5 million-plus to various charities over nearly 25 years, Fergie has helped bring peace to people he will never know but our community, his home away from home if you will, surely appreciate him – especially the FORTs, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Second Stage Housings of the world.
