Packed program for Poultryfest Get ready for the egg-cellent annual PoultryFest this Saturday. This year marks the 15th PoultryFest, which celebrates Niagara’s $100-million-a-year local poultry industry as well as the spirit of community volunteers. Enjoy a day packed full of show, competitions, historical and educational displays, children’s activities, and plenty of great food to enjoy. “We have our annual favouritesthe discovery centre wih lots of baby chicks, the poultry show, car shows, mad science, and our kids’ zone. Kids - the shortest stand-up comics of them all We have a comedian in the family. Michael is 13 years of age, looks like Mike Myers and has the stand-up style of Henny Youngman. “Take my sister,” he’d say. “No, seriously, please take her with you.” Recently he set his grandmother up on Skype in more ways than one. After he walked her through the complexities of password, code name and email address, they were finally ready for the big moment of facing each other live on webcam. All she could do was rave about how great it was to see her favorite grandson on the screen in front of her. Michael’s first words were: “Ah Grandma, I noticed you haven’t made your bed today.” Boy, did that even things up between them for all of the times she babysat and had to hound him to do the same. When his grandmother asked him if he had a cold he replied: “No, I’m fine. It’s not a cold, it’s just puberty. I have hair growing in the strangest places ... even on my legs!” Recently at a family celebration attended by 120 people at a local hall, Michael asked to be the last speaker on the program. He took everyone by surprise when he announced that he could

As I said, we have a comedian in the family. Michael, a Net nerd has never heard of Art Linkletter and what a shame that is. Ages ago, Art Linkletter had a hit television program entitled Kids Say The Darndest Things. Spinning off the TV show with books, albums and a speaking career, he became a millionaire by listening to what children say. The little ones provided all the comic material free. Apparently no kid ever said: “Mr. Linkletter, I’d like you to meet my agent Sid Silverman.” Innocently and in the nicest kind of way, the kids tormented Art Linkletter. Art: “What’s the first thing a fireman does when the four-alarm bell rings?” Kid: “Pulls his pants up.” Art: “What does
your father do to help around the house?” Kid, after a long pause: “He makes cocktails.” Art: “What’s the first thing you would do as president?” Kid: “Keep my mouth shut.” And the cruelest cut of all ... Art: “How do you spell Art?” Kid: “R-A-T.” But Art was right - out of the mouths of babes come real beauties. And parents too, especially in their notes to teachers explaining the absence of their kids. I was re-reading one of my books the other day, Guys: Not Real Bright And Damn Proud Of It! in which the following list appeared. It’s a compilation of excuses offered to teachers concerning their children’s absence from class. (Warning: The material contained within this listing may indicate that those parents have the same reasoning ability and attention span of an unrepentant, poorly rehabilitated, crack-happy mayor of Toronto.) Here are but a few: • “Please excuse Blanche from gym today. She’s administrating.” (And the people who work in the principal’s office were furious. They thought that was their job.) Hodgson to step aside as Lincoln mayor, will run for regional post Lincoln Mayor Bill Hodgson confirmed Saturday he will not run for the position to which he has been elected three times. “Refocus is the word I have been using when talking to people,” said Hodgson, during a break in the festivities at Mike Weir Winery. “Three terms and 11 years is enough. It is time for some new, young people to step up and show what they can do.” But fear not, Hodgson supporters. Part of his refocus includes running for Lincoln’s regional councillor position. “That will allow me to reduce the number of appearances and such, as those things are very important, and I can still get a lot of things done at Region,” he said.

Weir greets family, friends at winery opening Perseverance was the word of the day at Mike Weir Winery on Saturday. Scores of family and friends were invited to the private, but official, opening to Beamville’s latest addition to its winery contingent. Winery president Barry Katzman told those on hand it had taken the group nearly nine years to get to the point where a retail shop would become a reality. “All good things are worth waiting for, and this is one of them,” Katzman said. “It has been four years since I first toured this site.” Katzman noted that the process to get the facility open was long and arduous and praised Town of Lincoln officials for aiding in getting it done.
Internally, he said Jim Weir, older brother of Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Mike, was instrumental as well. “Jim is a behindthe-scenes guy and he gets things done. The level of care which the Weir family instills is evident from Jim,” Katzman said, noting the family got into the wine business as a method of supporting Mike’s charitable foundation. All proceeds from the winery go to the foundation. “Mike got into this industry for all the right reasons and that permeates through our entire staff,” said Katzman. Despite the long journey, Mike Weir told those in attendance his team is sure it was all worth it. “We’re very happy. We are sure we

Ithaca Island ship disappeared in the Great Lakes By Skip Gillham For Newsnow Two years after the Liberian registered freighter Ithaca Island visited the Great Lakes, it simply disappeared. The ship was lost with all hands and a full cargo of grain while on a voyage from Norfolk, Virginia, to Manchester, England. The vessel last reported at noon on October
Shipwreck 11, 1968, but was never heard from again. There is no confirmed reason for its loss on the Atlantic. The 136.4 metre long vessel had been built at Port Glasgow, Scotland, and launched as Ravnaas on March 14, 1947. It operated for Norwegian interests until sold and renamed
Valparaiso under Liberian registry in 1961. It sailed briefly as Cleopatra, also Liberian, in 1964 before becoming Ithaca Island later that year. The 7,426 cargo carrier traded through the Seaway for one trip in 1966 and never came back. After 21-years of sailing the seas, the vessel was lost with all hands 46-years ago this fall.

Weir’s winery welcome a class act It has been about 35 years since I laid my eyes upon Wiener Bennett. Early on, myself and my friends figured he got tired of our teenaged act of taking the same putt 10 times til we made it when we were playing good ol’ Seaforth Golf and Country Club. He was an assistant pro at chez Doig, the Seaforth Club’s family owners. Years later, we heard he had relocated down Sarnia way and had been a developmental support system for one Mike Weir. We thought, “that Wiener, good for him.” To us he was a mini Jack Nicklaus, same blonde coiffe, stocky build, and could he hit a ball? Thing was, he seemed to line up his shot at about a 45-degree angle off the tee to the point one was sure he would end up in the trees. But he played his big hook perfectly and it would draw back in and end up right down the middle. These days, he’s known as The Guv and is an esteemed part of the Weir Family entourage which was front and centre Saturday at the official opening for Mike Weir Winery. There were a lot of neat little things I very much appreciated when I attended the opening. That event was a perfect example of why the community newspaper industry is aces in my book, nothing like it. Seeing Steve Bennett was a highlight for sure, so too was catching up with Barry Katzman. Barry and I go
MIKE WILLISCRAFT back to his days at Stoney Ridge, his first days that is, long before he caught on with Creekside Winery, which helped launch the Weir brand. It was great to catch up and hear all that is planned for that new facility. As I looked around the tasting bar area, I could not help but think from what this new, hip and innovative place had transitioned. When I moved to Niagara in 1995, the new Weir winery was Walters Estate Winery, operated by Buck and Sadie Walters. I remember being at their opening, too. They were so proud of their retail shop, with its timber hewn from the tree lot on their property and stone quarried from their own land as well; the quinetessential homegrown facility. Then along came Susan O’Dell and David East, who converted the property to EastDell Estate and they pushed the property to another level. Dan Aykroyd and Diamond Estates held the reins briefly, which have now been handed to Weir, his brother JIm, Katzman
and his new winery team. But the star of the show, unmistakenly (aside from the wine, of course) is Mike Weir. Meeting him for the first time confirmed for me the sentiments others have told me about the man: a class act. For me, a perfect indication of this man’s character came right in the middle of his introductory speech as he thanked the throng of family and friends in attendance. I have been to hundreds of these kinds of events over the years. In fact, I had just been at the grand opening of the new arena/ library complex in Beamsville earlier that day. Not once have I seen someone ask the crowd to pause and bow their heads in silence for a moment to think about loved ones not in attendance. It was a simple, yet classy move and that is Mike Weir. He was very generous with his time, as was Wiener, er, The Guv, and Katzman at a time when he didn’t really have to be. The event was private for family and friends. Of course media was invited, but I must say I felt like a bit of an intruder. It is going to be great to see how far these new caretakers of this well-known property can take Mke Weir Winery. No doubt they will be awesome ambassadors for Niagara and the wine industry, so welcome, Weir family, you are now members of the very exclusive ClubWEST.
