1812 efforts to be honoured

A special service for a farmer-turned-soldier will be held this Sunday, June 28. The efforts of Isaac Hodgkins Jr. will be recognized during the 2 p.m. event at Lane’s Cemetery, Twenty Mile Road, in St. Anns. Isaac was a farmer and resident of Gainsborough Twp. until his death in 1867. He also fought in the War of 1812 from 1812-1814. His descendants are welcome to attend.

After that, opinions diverge considerably regarding traffic issues, sightlines to businesses on the south side of Main Street and access to their doors.

Of paramount concern to business owners is a decided drop in foot traffic during the hours of the market. Whether it be Harmony Jewellers, Home

Hardware or Village Studio, all say traffic in their stores is negligible after the street is closed. While services seem to see little or no im-

With significant investments made to my business in the last few years, its frustrating to lose a business day every week to poor market management.” Some business owners are disgruntled because, they say, their concerns are not new. Bryan Macaulay of Vilage Studio said he raised the issue three years ago. “I love the idea of the market, but it needs to work for the merchants as well. Right now, all market vendors set up on the south side of Main Street. Not only does this block businesses from sight, it also eliminates foot traffic from the market and access from the road, and that doesn’t work for us,” Macaulay said. Market manager Michelle Seaborn said she spoke to Grimsby Fire Department several years ago when the market was invited to relocate to Main Street

and she was told it needed to stay on the south side. Macaulay said he addressed the issue this week with Grimsby fire officials and confirmed there would be no issue using the north side as long as the proximity to fire hydrants was adhered to. As for sightlines with the existing set-up, Seaborn noted many points at which accesses were added or widened. The market first set up behind St. Georges Ukrainian Church with 20 vendors. It quickly outgrew that spot and moved to Main Street in 2010. Since that time it has flourished and become one of the most popular farmers markets in Ontario. “The issue is not and never was about the market being on Main Street. However, there is no reason altering the set-up could not be beneficial for all. We would would just like to meet with the market steering committee and make a plan,” Macaulay said.

150th at Elcho United Church For Norman Vaughn being part of Elcho Road United Church is like breathing. “My family goes back in this area to 1795 and right back to the start of the church,” said Vaughn. Like many other churches, Elcho United has had its struggles to survive. “In 1964 the United Church decided they wanted to close down a whole bunch of small churches and force everyone to go to large churches. We had a congregation meeting and had to vote on whether or not we would continue on our own,” recalled Vaughn whose ancestors, along with the Bowman family, donated the original land on which the church and its adjacent cemetery

Wing Ding takes flight

Successful garden tour

Rotary Club of Lincoln is gearing up for its annual Wing Ding event at Charles Daley Park, July 17-19. This year, eight bands will entertain over the three-day span with six “wingers” vying for chicken wing supremacy. Friday night will feature a Cruise Night as well. Visitors are encourage to bring lawn chair or blankets to ensure comfort while taking in a show. Admission to the park is $2 per car. It runs Friday 4-10 p.m.; Saturday noon-10 p.m., and; Sunday noon 6 p.m.

Former Great Lakes trader Sunny Girl sold for scrap

By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The Norwegian freighter Sunny Girl was built at Kiel, West Germany, in 1957 and began coming to the Great Lakes before the year was out. The 78.6 metre long vessel was a snug fit in the old St. Lawrence Locks but, once the Seaway opened in 1959, Sunny Girl and another carrier could make a tandem passage. It was sold

Shipwreck in 1962 and didn’t return to the Great Lakes. It was sailing under a fourth name of Navarino when it ran aground and partially sank in the Black Sea near Romania and Bulgaria, Dec. 16, 1973. It was refloated, with severe bottom damage, and towed to Varna, Bulgaria, on

July 6, 1974. The ship was repaired and had four more names. It moved to the Far East as Cara Timur Tiga in 1991 and caught fire in the engineroom July 13, 1993. The blaze broke out at sea near Miri, Borneo. The damage was too much to justify another repair. The former Great Lakes trader was broken up for scrap early in 1994.

Ciderfest kicks off Friday There is still time to get tickets for this weekend’s Ciderfest. The popular country-style concert is set on the beautiful ground of Puddicombe Estates Farm and Winery and the fun begins Friday night. Let’s talk It would seem Smithville is not the only downtown core that has some issues brewing. All that is needed is a positive conversation with some understanding of what some businesses are experiencing. Let’s just check the pettiness at the door. Because businesses question what is happening at their front door is no reason to act like you’ve been shot. Yes, there is emotion. Yes, there is intensity. When you are talking about people’s lives, everything they own, yes, they are going to get upset when their livelihood is jeopardized. If they weren’t that concerned, they likely would not still be in business. The market is great. Everyone agrees. The only point made by anyone downtown has been, in essence, “Let’s look for a way to juggle the physical set up for the day so nobody faces a detrimental effect.” Period. Let’s talk. Let’s get it done. M.W.

Are we doomed for uni-city repeat? The spectre of one-tier government reared its ugly head – and it is ugly – this week. The circumstance? Niagara Region asked some in Niagara’s business community for input on improving the region’s economic future. And in this case, “economic future” encompasses a few things: viability of government; taxation levels, ability to attract business and quality of life would be a few areas which would combine to either provide a solid or poor economic forecast. The bottom line from some of the businessmen who addressed the group? Niagara should do away with one level of government. A quote from the St. Catharines Standard, postTuesday meeting: I think we need one Niagara,” E.S. Fox president Spencer Fox said. “We need the City of Niagara. We should have one regional fire department. We should have one public works department. It’s crazy to have the Region, all these cities. “We can’t keep going on like this. That is a significant and substantive change to reduce government — you’ve got to take a layer out.” From the point of view of a resident or business operator in either Niagara Falls or St. Catharines, it’s a nobrainer. They would benefit greatly by absorbing all the surrounding communities. The balance of population, the balance of power would also fall to them. Many in Niagara West already believe Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln get short-changed in the current regional system.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Still many others refuse to acknowledge that westend municipalities were even amalgamated into the region in 1970 in the first place. Right, people of Jordan, Campden, Wellandport and Caistor Centre? Even the newest residents who have relocated to our area immediately call each satellite community by its name when they state where they live. Virtually nobody, unless in a formal capacity at an event of some sort, says, “Ya, I just moved to Lincoln” if they just bought a townhouse in DeSantis’ Lincoln Square. As for Mr. Fox’s comments, I agree wth one aspect but the level of government I would dissolve is the regional one, not the grassroots municipal level. Amalgamations, simply, did not work. Hamilton? Chatham-Kent? Ottawa? Significantly fewer services, less responsive government and no change in overall financial position or worse. None of the forced amalgamations resulted in positive economic evolution. Federal and provincial governments realized years ago that local municipal governments were the best and most effective body to administer spending. Obvi-

ously, a lower tier municipality would be more in tune with group needing funds or what events required a financial leg up. The higher up those decisions, the less effective and more wasteful the system becomes and that is part of where the financial model for a uni-city option goes up in smoke. And that is purely with dollars: the where and how much factor. When you get into the “whys” of government, the policies and decisons, the disconnect is even more extreme. Policing was a major issue in south Ottawa-Carleton when one-tier rolled through. As a reporter, I covered an area not unlike Niagara West. I covered Rideau and Osgoode Townships as well as the south end of Nepean. The townships were policed from an OPP outlet based in Manotick. When regional police, controlled by a new one-tier government, took over, the local detachment was lost, as was the knowledge and connection with the long-time OPP officers who worked out of there. Policing became more expensive for a poorer and less responsive service. The debacle in Hamilton and Chatham-Kent deterred the provincial government from imposing more forced amalgamations. Nothing has changed in the 14-plus years since. Has it been that long that people have forgotten what the projections were for the other forced amalgamations and what the results proved? Sadly, if we have not learned from those poor results we are doomed to repeat the uni-city fiasco. Be wary, people!
