Up Front Beamsville market launches
Beamsville Farmers Market kicks off its 2017 season Saturday, June 3, at 9:30 a.m. at the Fleming Centre. Music provided by John Restas from 9:30-11:30 am, with free face painting and balloon creations by Masquerade for the kids from 11 am-Noon. The Beamsville Lions Club will be there with their sausage cart. “Of course, your local farmers and vendors will also be there,” said executive director of Beamsville BIA Marianne Llapitan, who organizes the market.
Festival of Art this weekend
The very popular Grimsby Festival of Art returns to the Peach King Centre Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. A wide variety of artisan will showcase their work, while a series of entertainers will keep the mood lively. A Harry Potter FunZone will also be set up for local wizards and wizardesses to check out. A beer and wine garden will be set up, with a variety food trucks cooking up a storm. Admission is $5, kids under 16 are free.

Grimsby loses community cornerstone As Grimsby grew and changed all around him, Howard Clausen did not. Howard, who died May 20 at the age of 92 was one of the most active champions Grimsby has ever seen. He was not the most visible. He never wanted to be, but, in his way, he was practically everywhere since he arrived in town in 1952. To name a few things: • 35-year volunteer firefighter with Grimsby Fire Department; • Grimsby Lions Club member; • Very active at Trinity United Church, Grimsby Historical Society, Grimsby & District Chamber of Commerce, the Masonic Lodge, Grimsby Benevolent Fund, Shriners and Grimsby Garden Club; • Town of Grimsby alderman, and; • Military veteran, and much more. “He was a lot of things to a lot of people,” said Howard’s eldest son, Bill. “He was always busy and he always wanted us to be busy. He hated seeing us sitting there doing nothing.” Aside from getting things done, Howard also had a sense of knowing who needed what in terms of support: whether that be a kind gesture, hug, or some very quiet financial help. “He just had a knack. He could pick someone out of the crowd who needed a handshake or a kind word,” said Bill. That knack made him an integral and dedicated supporter of every group he was connected with. When a need arose, Howard was there...sometimes as quickly as

In an online tribute to Howard, long-time friend Debbie Zimmerman recounted seeing him barreling down Kingsway Boulevard in his pyjamas to get to the firehall for a call. Howard’s military experience, while an important part of his life was not something Howard spoke about. He was a medic in the army and was part of the Battle of Normandy. “It was towards the end of the war. His brother, Roy, had already been killed at Dieppe and his other brother, Bob, was an

He was there for the liberation of Holland and it was hard for him to see children on the road with no food,” said Ruth, the youngest of Howard’s four children. Whether it was holding court in the furniture sales area of the Grimsby Benevolent Fund store on Friday nights, or making one of countless visits to someone at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (he was part of Trinity United’s visiting program committee), Howard always had time to help someone in need. “He was of a different era, when people knew what it was like to have nothing. His was a very benevolent generation,” said Ruth. During visitations when people waited hours in line, or after the reception at a packed Trinity United, Bill said the family heard time and time again from people who been helped in one way or another by Howard over his decades of service. “There were people who came up to me and said simply ‘I would not still be here if it were not for your dad,” said Ruth. “There was a ton of small comments,” added Bill. “People saying they got helped out at a bad time in their life..but nobody every knew how much he was doing.” Howard is survived by his wife, Alice. He was the father of Bill (Barbara), Andy (Pam), Jack (Carrie) and Ruth. Cherished grandfather of Robbie, Christopher, Mark, Stuart, Cindy, Laura, Becky, Brian and Tom and great-grandfather of 19 great-grandchildren.

Donation commemorates Holland With the stories of his excited father ringing in his ears, Bas Opdenkelder took it upon himself to do something unique during Dutch Heritage Month. The Grimsby resident donated a rate print which depicts “Operation Manna” in motion. From April 29, 1945 to the end of World War II in Europe on VE Day, May 8, 1945, Avro Lancasters from the Royal Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force participated in ‘Operation Manna’ dropping a total of over 11,000 tons of food with no parachutes - into the still-not-liberated western part of The Netherlands. Civilians were in danger of starvation with the Dutch famine still gripping the area. “The Germans knew that the war was lost. ‘Operation
Manna’ not only saved lives but it gave hope and the feeling that the war would soon be over,” said Opdenkelder, who relates a story his father told him many times. “It was a pleasure to do this and, with the history of my father telling us about that time, the excitement of receiving food from the sky from these low flying Lancaster guys was awesome to hear.” “My grandfather got a package of real butter and, with the adrenaline of receiving that package, ate that real butter creating him not feeling to well after that. I had to hear about that several times when I was a young boy growing up in Rotterdam.” Aside from Bas’s father, Johan being present along the river De Rotte, so too

Region plans GO information series throughout June Niagara Region will be holding a series of public meetings in June to provide information and consult with residents about future development of the area surrounding four proposed GO Train stations. In 2016, the Ministry of Transportation confirmed daily GO Train service to three station locations: Grimsby, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, with a fourth potential future station location in Beamsville. The Public Information Centres, set for dates in June, will provide an opportunity for residents to learn about the status of the Niagara GO Hub and Transit Stations Study initiated by Niagara Region in 2015. The study will determine appropriate land uses for each proposed site, including scale of development and improvements to infrastructure re-

Country music star Kira Isabella will lead the showcase of entertainers taking to the stage at June 24’s Poultryfest at the West Niagara Agriculture Centre. Isabella began singing and playing the guitar at seven years of age under the guidance of her father and her singing teacher. Inspired by fellow Canadian, country superstar Shania Twain, Kira made the jump into the county music industry. Masonic Lodges host open houses Saturday Niagara West’s Masonic Lodges will host a series of open houses this Saturday in recogniation of the organizations’s 300th anniversary. Grimsby’s local Masonic Lodge, Union Lodge No. 7, invites all to see what Masonry involves and to clarify points and misconceptions that exist about their order. Its open house runs from 10 am-Noon., with a presentation starting at 10:30 a.m., in their lodge room located above Home Hardware, at 33 Main St. West. Other area open houses include: • Ivy Lodge No.115 – 4276 Mountain Street, Beamsville, 10 am-2 pm; • Dufferin Lodge No.338 – 5167 Canborough Road, Wellandport, 10 am-2 pm; • Coronation Lodge No.502– 113 Griffin Street, Smithville, 10 am-1 pm. Many in town know the name Col. Robert Nelles. He was one of the first Masons in the area and was the first local Master. The “Nelles Manor”, which stands at 126 Main St. W. is the Lodge’s earliest standing meeting place. Their first meeting place was “The Red Tav-
ern”, which was situated at 55 Main Street East, where Pro Oil Change is not located. Many people think the Masonic Order is a secret society, but this is incorrect, says Grimsby Lodge member Bob Brooks. He says the truth is that they are not a secret society, but a society with a secret. That secret is only different ways for Masons to truly identify one another. Masonry is based on the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man. The Grimsby Lodge meets regularly on the second Thursday of the each month (excluding July and August) in the Masonic Lodge Hall above Home Hardware at 33 Main Street West. Anyone interested in membership must ask a Mason. It’s against their constitution to go out and solicit members. To join, you must be a man of at least 21 years of age, believe in the existence of a Supreme Being (atheists are not permitted to join), and have two Masons sign his application as character witnesses. Facing adulthood with autism It’s a year of change for Evan Sheldrake. This spring, he will graduate from his special needs high school program. It’s a step into adulthood for the 21 year-old inspiration for Evan’s Ride for Autism, which will be held in Smithville June 10. It’s also a worrying step into the unknown for Evan and his family as he leaves the structure and familiarity of his high school years. Evan’s needs for everyday support are challenging. Of the Orchard’s Retirement residence in Vineland passed away peacefully on May 26th, 2017. She was in her 96th year. Born in Scotland, Muriel met her husband, Lloyd, while he was a bomber pilot with the R.C.A.F. They were married 65 years when he passed away in 2010. She is survived by her two sons, Ken (Jennifer) and Ron (Susan), grandchildren Troy (Kristen), Briana (Steve) Santoro and Scott (Carla) plus 4 great grandchildren, Piper, Scout and Sadie Southward and Austin Santoro. Cremation has taken place. There will be an interment for the family at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jordan Station. LCHS resumes control of clinic Starting June 23, the Ontario SPCA is returning clinic operations to the Lincoln County Humane Society. “We are truly grateful to the Ontario SPCA for their assistance with the clinic over the past several years,” said Kev-

Trombetta called me to note the person left the meeting early, after all debate, but just before the vote was taken to rise from closed session. Splitting hairs, yes, but technically true. But the interesting thing is that Trombetta chose to grandstand about the need to keep closed session information in closed session but when he called to note the circumstance he told me far more about what transpired than the original person did. It is simply another example of how West Lincoln - for a very long time - has chosen to implement rules and guidelines on a highly selective basis. Pick a lane, people, and stay in it. ****** Now, on this Ald. Michelle Seaborn-Casablanca Inn deal.... It would have been very easy for me to go all soapbox in the subsequent edition after that incident. I chose not to as the story spoke for itself. And I thought about going nuclear and printing the entire email exchange which went over several hours as I attempted to get her account of events after hearing about some of her comments on
her facebook page. There are two key facts I would like to clarify and, as noted, the rest speaks for itself. Point #1: “When repeated demands for comment were sent via email, and the response was “Not for print, this concerns my personal business” was not only ignored, but the statement printed, alarms of what was to follow should have sounded,” states her comment. An off the record discussion is always agreed to. It is not unilateral. I asked for comment, no offer of confidentiality, and my first email back to her after the suggestions of “not for print” was: “Michelle, I need a comment on the record. This is not acceptable in any way.” From that point another six emails or so were exchanged with her account of events. After all that, a lengthy phone conversation ensued where all was reviewed, Seaborn was cordial and thanked me for getting her side of the chain of events. Point #2: “When is it ok to take the word of accusers that hide behind a print media known to print whatever sells papers?” wrote Seaborn. I don’t sell newspapers, never did. And who was hiding? The key source of information was the man who runs the Casablanca Inn - a standup guy with an impeccable record and highly respected in the community. He has no stake in the discussion other than the concern for his staff and his business. In speaking to him, he preferred to act as spokesman for his staff after confirming details with a half-dozen of them before he said a word to me - nothing rushed, nothing forced. He has absolutely nothing to gain in this situation. The information, both sides, is there. That’s how a real paper does things.
