Get your cider on this weekend Puddicombe Estate is expanding CiderFest to two days of excitement- June 20 and 21. Event organizer Brock Puddicombe said last year’s event was such a success that they decided to add a second day. “We’ve also added a larger stage, more cider companies and some gourmet food trucks,” he explained. There will also be free train rides for people attending Ciderfest.
The country music concert, barbecue and cider festival features a great line up of vendors including Puddicombe Cider Co., Molson Canadian Cider, Country Cider Co. and Fielding Estate Winery as well as a host of others. There will also be a variety of food trucks and of course a great line up of featured artists. This year’s entertainment will be headlined by George Canyon with
other performers including: Amy Churn, Chad Brownlee, High Valley, Aaron Pritchett, Autumn Hill, Tebey, Phil Botting and Brad James. At issue is a proposed drivethru Tim Hortons for the corner of Alyssa Drive (John St.) and Ontario Street in Beamsville. Council has supported the project, but the Ontario Municipal Board disagreed with the plan proposed and rejected it.
Now, the developer is suggesting that a piece of land be donated to the town for a “gateway feature”, a welcome sign. This would allow for the proposed site to then be considered as an interior lot fronting on Alyssa, as opposed to Ontario as it was in the initial plan. While Mayor Bill Hodgson noted that the committee and council need to see a different plan, “that this process cannot be just about tweaking things
and running back to the OMB. ...The Town needs to be concerned with its reputation and preserving its legitimacy,” according to meeting minutes. While several councillors voiced varying opinions and concerns, Coun. Rob Foster said an earlier NewsNow story –– which indicated a possible Tim Hortons for the site was being reconsidered –– was incorrect. The story did not state council was reconsidering the same proposal, rather, that the idea

Foster reminded that council considers policy from the province, region and town as well as public interest and that the recommendation of staff is appreciated in guiding council in this decision making,” according to meeting minutes. Women, cat plus new boyfriend=domestic terrorism Even a casual reader of a newspaper’s advice column will notice the recurring theme of a household crisis involving the woman, her cat and the new boyfriend. The culprit is never the cat, he got there first and clearly marked the place as his own territory. The woman usually sets the table for trouble when she decides to strike out looking for companionship, intimacy and love. Duh! She already had the cat! As in all conflicts that result in a war the guy becomes the main transgressor. The new boyfriend either doesn’t like cats or is allergic to them and that’s where the battle begins. Solutions offered up by the advice columnist and the readers varies from “definitely get rid of the guy” to shampooing the cat every two weeks to eliminate the dried saliva in the coat which causes the allergy. There is one other option. Years ago I
WILLIAM THOMAS was on the book tour with Guys - Setting Off The Jerk Detector and three incidents on my promotional day in Hamilton, Ontario still stand out in my mind. First, my publicist arranged a book signing in a restaurant in Jackson Square called Walt’s Beanery. They had me sitting at a small table in a corner of the restaurant with an ad sign over my head that read: “Try Our Beans And Let Us Hear From You!” I know what you’re thinking - it must have sounded like a whoopee cushion going off every minute or so. Well no, but I did ask for confirmation from the manager that I was sitting in a non-smok-
ing section. I’ll do a lot of crazy things to promote one of my books but having my hair set on fire by a natural gas explosion is not one of them. The second thing that I remember was autographing two books for a gruff, middle-aged man in a hurry. “Sign for Big Ears and another for Big Ears Two.” As I signed the books I had to ask: “Please sir, tell me ... these are not your children?!?” It turns out he had a couple of rabbits for pets and wanted to preserve the memory of them on the first page of my book. And the third thing I remember was a woman telling me the story of how her house was turned into a war zone when her new boyfriend clashed with her cat. Her name was Christine, a lovely young lady who worked at Coles, my next stop on book tour day. See CAT, Page 5

to jingle in the house on Grosvenor Street. “As his toys disappeared, a few each week, I thought Bob was throwing them away and I remember thinking that was kind of cruel.” “By the time I noticed his small, stuffed cat toy had disappeared, Sailor was long gone,” recalls Christine. “But still I thought Bob had something to do with it. I couldn’t believe the cat had actually moved out of my house, one toy at a time.” The stuffed cat was Sailor’s favourite, the one he loved to sink his teeth into and drool on, the one that reminded him of Bob. When Sailor made his
realized Bob’s love for Christine was stronger than the smell of cat pee, he decided he would be the one to leave home. But remember, he’s a cat - only on his terms. I mean cats run away from home all the time but not quite like this guy did. “It must have been over a period of like two weeks ... it happened so slowly, I didn’t notice until he was gone,” says Christine with one love affair falling apart just as the new one was growing strong. First the rubber mouse on the wheel disappeared. Then two catnip mice went missing and the plastic ball with the bell inside was never again heard

In order to continue delivering the best possible level of service to the community, Station 1 in Smithville will be looking to fill several openings for firefighters in the next few months. “The ideal candidate is someone who is community-oriented, enjoys helping people out. Someone with strong ethics and good moral character,” he described. Although it can be a demanding position, it is very rewarding. “You lose time physically and mentally from your family, but it’s extremely
rewarding to help people,” he explained. “You get to make a real impact and that’s really satisfying.” Applicants must live in Smithville and be at least 18 years of age. Sunset Music Series begins July 8 The fifth annual Sunset Music Series gets underway on July 8 at The Rotary Shell, Charles Daley Park, in Jordan. Everyone is invited to attend this weekly event featuring a concert every Tuesday evening, 7-8:30 p.m., throughout July and August this summer. To delight all ages, the eight-week showcase of local musical talent offers different genres including pop, country, swing, rock, concert band, R&B, jazz and disco. Their cousin Mackenzie Williams, of Beamsville, is too young to visit the babies in the neonatal intensive care unit but she is sending her love another way. She has asked her friends and family for donations and with her mom Jessica’s help they have put together three raffle baskets full of prizes. At her birthday party, Mackenzie even asked people to purchase raffle tickets instead of presents so she can donate all proceeds to McMaster Children’s Hospital in her cousins names. “She has the biggest heart you could imagine,” said Carter and Owen’s mother Jessica. The babies are progressing well and are very strong. “As with everything, as time goes on it gets a little easier,” Jessica said. “Progress is being made and they’re gaining weight and becoming stronger every day. I couldn’t be more proud of them.” They were born weighing just 1.5 lbs. and now they are up to 4 lbs. McMaster Children’s Hospital has been a huge help in their struggle. “The support we have been given from everyone here is overwhelming,” Jessica said. They are expected to be in the hospital until at least Jessica’s due date-July 25. You can help by purchasing raffle tickets before August 1. Borg gradually fades away at sea By Skip Gillham For Newsnow The small Panamanian freighter Borg seems to have gradually faded away. It had been a Great Lakes visitor in 1985 and, over a span of 45 years, carried ten different names and at least eight flags of registry for a variety of owners. Borg was built at Bremen, West Germany, in 1966 and first sailed as Silesia in West German and
Shipwreck then Danish registry. The 74 metre long vessel likely spent most of its years in short haul coastal trading around Europe. It had only two holds and a total capacity of 1,320 tons of cargo. The ship came through the Seaway under its third name of Borg in 1985 and never returned. While it carried common national
ship registries such as Panama and Greece, it also flew the flag of Honduras, Iceland and Tonga at various times. In 2007, the ship was observed idle at Rhodes, Greece, as Archangelos and by August 2011 it was seen partially submerged at Partheni, Greece. The vessel was clearly abandoned. It may still be there or was pumped out and scrapped.

Efficient and professional service is important in such a business but so is personal attention, says Worron who would never employ the “assembly-line” type of service offered in more commercial establishments. “It is important to understand client service,” she says.
The four young ladies who grew up a century ago in Grimsby’s historic Dolmage House enjoyed the finer things in life. A written account of the time indicates that Carrie, Laura, Fannie and Florence Dolmage wore hats and gloves and were driven about town by a uniformed chauffeur. Dolmage House owner Lynn Worron is behind the successful Iron Gate Retreat that has operated at the lovely Main Street West home for the past decade. This year, Worron celebrates a total of 15 years in business. For Worron it is all about the clients, many of whom have stayed with her throughout the years. “We love our clients,” she

Liberal win a setback locally Ancient news at this point, but last Thursday night’s majority win may have been good for the Liberal Party, but it is not good news for residents of Niagara West and supporters of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. While Hamilton Health Sciences officials remain optimistic and continue to say and do everything possible to keep the Liberals from looking like double-talking bafflegab experts, the fact remains, the Liberals have done little to nothing to make one believe they may actually come through and rebuild the venerable facility. It really is too bad. Every time one drives by the new behemoth on Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines, built in the wrong place of course, one must wonder why it was built there in the first place. At any rate, the Liberal win is a significant setback. M.W.
Lots on go, but concerted plan needed Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of good things going on in Beamsville, but putting a “Welcome to Beamsville” sign at John Street on Ontario Street would be like asking a visitor already seated on your chesterfield if they would like to come into your home. A little aside, chesterfield is a super old word for couch or sofa...My grandmother used to always call hers, located in the parlour, by that moniker. Love ya, Grandma. Anyways, back to Beamsville, there is a proposal –– dare I say being considered –– by Lincoln Council which would see some land donated to the town at that corner. The thinking there has to do with rearranging the frontage of that land at the intersection so it would be an interior lot and, as such, be subject to different requirements under the Planning Act. The point of these ramblings is not to agree or disagree with this issue, but to take a look at the possibility of a “gateway feature” as it was dubbed. The issue of the downtown core and its ongoing and major transition has been part of regular banter and coffee shop chatter for many months. While all agree, the development happening will have a permanent and positive effect on the town, how the Town uses that interest and growth will make a huge difference in how the personality of the town and its business community is perceived both
MIKE WILLISCRAFT by locals and visitors. The number one thing Beamsville needs in a commercial-core sense is an active and aggressive Business Improvement Area board. There is a BIA of sorts currently, but it has never been active or aggressive. I was part of the BIA back in the late 1990s and after 2000 when Commisso’s was the anchor of the downtown. At that time, the BIA had no budget. They had to go hat-in-hand to the Town every time they wanted to run an event or buy a garbage can. It was silly. Now, there is a very small budget, a few thousand dollars. Barely enough to start a good fire even if you had a can of kerosene. Now, I fully realize this money comes from and would come from the business people who bust their butts every day in the downtown shops. The same people who get asked for prizes and donations from pretty much every community group out there when they are raising their much needed funds. So I don’t mean to belittle that financial contribution.
A high-functioning BIA needs more money and to keep from bankrupting the small businesses, the solution is to expand the BIA territory north on Ontario Street to the QEW and bring more businesses into it. To look at Ontario Street now, anyone would realize Beamsville’s business core starts right at the highway and extends into downtown. Any “gateway feature” welcoming people to town should be right up at the highway, not after they are already in town. ***** Some housekeeping...
